Madrid legend Di Stefano undergoes heart op
MADRID, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Surgeons carried out quadruple heart bypass surgery on Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano on Wednesday and said the operation had gone normally.
The 79-year-old Argentine football legend was admitted to hospital after a heart attack on Saturday.
Wednesday's operation at Valencia's La Fe hospital took five hours, the hospital said in a statement.
'The operation went normally and his heart performed within the expected parameters,' it said.
Di Stefano had been transferred to the resuscitation unit where he was receiving ventilatory assistance but had no significant complications, the statement said.
'These first 24 hours are important because it is the time when complications can appear more frequently,' it said.
Real Madrid President Florentino Perez was on his way to the Valencia hospital to find out how the operation had gone, the club's website said.
The hospital's chief heart surgeon, Anastasio Montero, said on Monday that the operation would be complex because of the patient's age and because he is diabetic.
We better hope that he will be alright. We already lost George Best this year, to lose Di Stefano as well would be a tragedy for the football world.
