Oh boy, if that rumor was for real I will be a very happy man, because Torres is a fantastic striker!!!
Here what http://www.SportingLife.com is saying:
Milan eye Fernando Torres
AC Milan could make a shock swoop for Arsenal transfer target Fernando Torres.
The Spanish international striker, the hero of Atletico Madrid, has been the hottest property in Spain for a couple of years now.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for him in the past, and now Arsenal are reportedly desperate to take him to Highbury.
But now a move to Serie A is a possibility according to Spanish daily Marca.
The paper says the Rossoneri have confirmed their interest in "El Nino", and could try to land him during the January transfer window.
Any Milan move for Torres could see Christian Vieri return to Atletico.
Vieiri, who moved to AC from rivals Inter in the summer, spent a highly successful season at the Vicente Calderon in the late 1990s.
_____
LET'S PRAY!!!
2 Million plus Vieri for one of the hottest properties in the game ?

Although maybe it's a sweetener to let us have first option on him ? If there's any truth in the rumour that is, which i seriously doubt.

I see that you live in Germany and your German should be better than mine but I think the article says that we will try to land Torres for a double-digit figure in the millions + Vieri. I don't think they point out a precise figure for the money we would pay Atletico, let alone something as low as 2 mil euros. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
As for the transfer itself, it looks like bad business to me for Milan to miss on 5 mil Cassano and splash big for a Serie A unproven player like Torres. The notorious tendency of Spanish players to "mess it up" in Italy should not be ignored, as well, especially when this player would cost us 20 mil and above, with or without Vieri. IMO, this money could be spent more wisely on Alex, Alves, Reveilliere, Oddo, Diarra, Sneijder, Kuijt etc.

Well, you are dead right, Zlatanov: Cassano certainly was a better option, not only in terms of cash, but for the reasons you already pointed out. But since we can't grab him now, I think that Torres can be a fantastic purchase.

Oh, Sneijder is such a superb playmaker, he could make wonders alongside our Rick!
But if you got Cassano (not that we can now he's off to Madrid) you'd have to settle for his temper and tantrums ... which could easily disrupt any harmony in the squad.

I agree. Looks like a big talent, but surely signing some younger defenders should be the priority. Sheva and Pippo have another 2 or 3 years (at least) left at the top, so we're not in desperate need of a young striker, but the defence is getting old much more quickly. Perhaps we will get a nice surprise for the New Year when Carlo signs Torres plus 2 or 3 new defenders...?

But Pippo is definitely doomed by an endless sucession of injuries, I'm not so sure if we can hang on him for prime level football display.
if this insane transfer will be accoplished someday... Braida & co. should go for Presidents :DEl Milan vuelve a la carga por Fernando Torres
Ariedo Braida has said that Vieri is staying with Milan. Does this change the possibility of Torres signing?

Well its widely believed that Atletico owe us quite alot of money from past dealings. This wont make any difference to that.
Is the kid really as good as hes made out to be. His youth team scoring records are fantastic, but apart from that his senior level records are just ok.

i think torres has been identified as the future successor of shevchenko in years to come, but he won't come so early, i think at least in 2 seasons time. He won't come cheap for sure, but i reckon it's 5 years Milan shows interest in him and he should only be proud of that.
I've heard that Braida is enthusiastic on El Nino and that being him only 21 we should let him mature, leave Inzaghi his last years with us and get him later on. You can't get such a young player and let him on the bench.Do you all think Shevchenko will accept the bench? Spending 25 millions for a bench warmer is not a clever move. El Nino will come at proper time, he knows we're the best around and that he will play with great players.

No need to excuse, i see your point, but a younger can suffer too much bench time, so you need to field him instead you risk to waste his talent.
I say: better that he keeps on doing well at Madrid, his home and his fav club, then when he'll be ready let's get him. I don't know how many minutes he would play with a fit Shevchenko (it's clear he would be his natural substitute as i've heard Torres doesn't like to play as first striker)

From a logical point view you are totally right, but 'calcio mercato' is a mad stuff, and I'm always afraid that 'rogues' like Abramovitch came first to override our transfers.
well milan should be harder at his players. we got 9players who are certain of there place.
we should act harder to player in less form, less ... players who are to certain of there place.
we can do gila on bench, torres playes. then torres on bench, gila plays.
or when they don't perform well, on bench.

Fernando Torres is a great player, the only thing that concerns me is that he doesn't seem to be a natural goalscorer. As the star he is at Atletico Madrid he really should have scored more goals. Maybe this will get better as he gets even more experience... In Milan?
If Vieri wants to qualify for the Italy-squad for the World Cup then he should leave us, because he's not going to play much. But would Torres risk leaving Atletico for a place on Milan's bench and also risk losing his place in the spanish national team right before the World Cup? Not sure.
As much as I like popular names arriving to Milan... I have to say Rui Costa needs to go... he's a bench warmer, and a very expensive one... we can get a second "10" to help Kaka'... someone young like Rosicky, or Sneijder... and for a striker, Milan should give Ardemagni a chance, little by little... we have not had a promising youngster since Borriello, who never finished blooming and is now lost in Sampdoria's bench...
Borriello is at Treviso now, I think ;)
Torres will suffer on the bench and it will harm his development. We already play a 4-3-3 with Kaka so a third striker cant be used.
We wont find a player half as good or professional as Rui. He sits happily on the bench and plays well when he comes off it. Plus hes very experienced.

Atletico will listen to offers for Torres
Atletico Madrid are willing to listen to offers for one-time Chelsea target Fernando Torres.
The Spain striker was a target for the Blues last summer and has been linked with moves to AC Milan, Barcelona and Arsenal in the recent past.
The 21-year-old, who was the youngest player to appear for Atletico and for the national team, has a contract with the club which expires in 2008.
'As president and club administrator, I am obliged to listen to offers for Fernando Torres just like of any other player of our club,' club president Enrique Cerezo told the Spanish press.
'You study the offer and then you see what happens.'
The highly-rated Torres has a £62million transfer clause, which has been enough to deter most clubs from pursuing a move.
Despite his admission, Cerezo reiterated that the club was keen to keep Torres.
'We are not a club that sells and we have no intention of selling Torres for the sake of it. Fernando has a contract with Atletico and there's nothing that stops him from completing it.'

Hmmm... but after the WC transfer fees will be much higher than now...
I think it's terrible. Torres was ear-marked for us already and that persistent interest (plus that thing about Athletico owing us cash has now evaporated) should have been enough to tempt him to choose us over Chelsea.
however, we cannot afford to spend 20m on a striker when we're pretty well kitted out as it is and the defense is falling apart. Are we Real Madrid. If we have to sign him now I hope pass and sign 2 or 3 defenders.
Also I dissagree about the post-WC fee being higher, purely because spain are crap.
I also insist that our squad is very small to deal with both the CL and the Serie A.
Nonsense. The only teams with as much overall depth as us is Inter and Chelsea, other teams including big teams are lacking either in one area or all over the field. Juve and Barca is close though.
If you are a Real Madrid, Arsenal, Roma, ManU or Liverpool poster then ignore this post. Your team do lack squad depth.

Milan enter Torres scramble
Wednesday 25 January, 2006
Milan have joined the race to sign Atletico Madrid’s Fernando Torres after the striker was made available for transfer yesterday.
Although the Italian giants only netted Marcio Amoroso this month, the 31-year-old is seen as a short-term solution to the departure of Christian Vieri and has only signed until the end of next season.
Torres, meanwhile, has been the subject of concerted interest from the Rossoneri for several seasons but, along with other interested clubs, have always had any approaches for the Spain international rebuffed on the basis that he was not for sale.
But one of the most sought-after strikers in European football was made available for transfer by the Madrid club on Tuesday, whose President Enrique Cerezo surprised Spain with his live television announcement. "We will consider any bid for the striker so long as it is an interesting one," he said.
The Spanish club are not enjoying the best of financial health and their change of heart regarding their home-grown superstar would appear to suggest that they will be prepared to sell to the highest bidder.
This means that Milan will face stiff competition from Real Madrid, Arsenal and, most notably Chelsea, whose owner Roman Abramovich is reported to have already tabled an offer in the region of £34m for the 22-year-old in the past.
Torres, meanwhile, is said to have a preference for Italian football and Milan’s advantage is that they enjoy excellent relations with the Spanish club.

Aguero-Inter: l'Independiente frena, i procuratori no

As crazy as it sounds, I don't want Torres. He is a great player and he qualities can not be doubted. He would however cost a good 20+ million and I would rather use that money to see a central defender and a right back broght in this summer. We do have the best attack in Serie A. What we need is a couple of defenders. With all the rummors surrounding us with Stam and Vogel leaving, possibly even Gattuso, we are gonna be in need of a couple of midfielders as well. We do not need Torres as he will only be luxury.
The other point about Torres is that he is Spanish and plays in La Liga. Now I don't know about you but I remember that most spanish La Liga players do not do well in Serie A. Mendieta and Javi Moreno are two that come to my mind. I am not confident about signing great spanish players that have only played in La Liga their whole career.
There are quite a few good players that play in the positions concerning us on the marked right now and in the summer. Let's focus on what we need rather then spending money on luxury.
correct, for some reason Spanish players have adapted better to English Premier League... let's not forget Farinos (Inter), Guardiola (Brescia), Jose Mari (Milan), Raul Portillo (Fiore)

phew, thought I was the only one. I am pretty sure that Torres would be one big waste of money and hopes, should he arrive at Milan. And 20+ mil for Torres? Yeah, right, for which one of his legs is that? ASSUMING, and that's a big assumption filled with rumours and uncertainties, that Atletico does owe Milan ~20 mil euros, then adding to that another 20-25 mil could be considered a competitive offer for Torres - let's not forget that Chelski had an offer of close to 40 mil euros (or was it 37 mil POUNDS) turned down by Atletico last summer, so, chances are, they are gonna table an even higher bid this time around and this will put us out of the game, a game I wouldn't want to see Milan play anyway.
In the end of the day, rather than gambling a whole fortune on a player, whose chances to flop at Milan are higher than excellent, I think it would be much wiser to spend it on 2-3 midfielders and 3-4 defenders. And if we are in such a great need for a forward, I guess Dirk Kuijt will fit the bill far better than Torres, but that's just me since we don't seem to be even slightly interested in him.

Can you tell more things about Dirk Kuijt? I'm curious.
for me personally he is one of the best forwards available right now, and he wouldn't cost more than say 10-12 mil, most probably not even that much.
Physically he is, and looks, as strong as a blacksmith. Pretty agile and quick too, despite his physical strength. Great in the air, even better on the ground - can shoot with both legs, and it's one cannon of a shot that he has. Decent to pretty good dribbling skills but what I like most about him is his ability to participate in the attack and open spaces for his teammates by dropping back in midfield - great tactical awarenes from a 24 yo player who is captain of Feyenoord. There must be something in him if MvB decide to rebuild the attack of the Dutch NT around Kuijt - he was arguably their most impressive player in the WC qualifiers.
Seeing that a player like Kuijt is available for a fraction of what an overrated Torres would cost us, yet we aren't even rumoured to be after the Dutch, makes this whole Torres-saga look even more ridiculous.

were more attacking than they are... its just that they attack with a good defence there just incase... we attack, then concede, then attack and concede and so on... once they score, they sit back and start counter attacking ... and im sure they adopted this from us from 2-3 years back.. we perfected it best
