Well I started to watch football in 98, France world cup... so from that point till now the best games I saw are:
1. Czech Rep. 3-2 Holland (EC 04)
2. Holland 0-0 Italy (EC 00)
3. Argentina 2-2 England (WC 98)
4. Holland 2-1 Argentina (WC 98)
5. Brazil 1-1 Holland (WC 98)
And in the clubs competitions:
1. Dynamo K. 3-3 Bayern (CL 98/99)
2. Man Unt. 3-3 Barcelona (twice that season CL 98/99)
3. Juve 2-3 Man Unt. (CL 98/99)
4. Man Unt. 2-3 Real (CL 99/00)
5. Real- Bayern 2-4; 1-4; 2-0; 1-2 (4 great matches in CL 99/00)
6. Valencia 5-2 Lazio (CL 99/00)
7. Valencia 4-1 Barca (CL 99/00)
8. Real 7-5 Man Unt (aggr. CL 02/03)
9. Milan 1-1 Inter (CL 02/03)
10.Milan 0-0 Juve (CL 02/03)
11.Milan 4-1 Depor (CL 03/04)
12.Milan 1-0 Barca (CL 04/05)
13.Chelsea 4-2 Barca (CL 04/05)
14. Milan 3-3 Liverpool (CL 04/05)
Some more personal fav.:
Barca 0-4 Dynamo K. (SHEVA SHEVA SHEVA CL 97/98)
Germany 1-1 England (EC 96)
Holland 3-1 Germany (EC 92)
USSR 2-0 Italy (EC 88)
Holland 2-1 Germany (EC 88)
USSR 0-2 Holland (EC 88)
I hope I remembered the years and the results right, surely the most entertaining tournament so far was the CL, after that the Euro cup and unfortunately WC ended only third... too many boring games.
Milan 6 - 0 Inter
Milan 4 - 0 Barca (94 CL Final) :star:
that springs to mind :D
As do the 2 Liverpool v Newcastle games that finished 4-3 both times and Liverpool v Luton in the F.A. Cup a few weeks ago, that match had everything.
Germany 1 - 5 England ... sorry Susi :D
I'm sure there are many others ...
Milan-R. Madrid 5-0 (Ancelotti, Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten, Donadoni)
Croatia - Germany 3-0 (France '98)
Yeah... some great matches.
Well those are great matches. Now if you are talking about the ones that I did go to... then the one that tops it off for me is the 2003 CL QuarterFinal 2nd Leg Match
Milan 3-2 Ajax. Friggin had to wait to the dying seconds for the awesome Pippo goal. I honestly believed that was the match that definitely made the difference for us in order to win the whole d@mn thing at Wembley. Why is it the greatest??? For starters we were tied with Ajax ahead on away goals, yet almost all Milanisti stayed with some idea that we could win this in the dying seconds, no matter what the odds against it could be. All of A sudden...... GOAL! PIPPO INZAGHI! The emotion was so strong because of the close end of it. I can tell you that there were Milanisti in tears of joy with this vital goal. From there you guys no the rest of the story.
The cream on top of this dessert was that at the final whistle... we didnt taunt Ajax at all. They came with a respectable fighting spirit worthy of some praise. NO.... we didnt jeer them. We did it in old Rossoneri fashion... We taunted INTER! HEY! HEY! Chi non Salta Nerazurra!
there are too many to think of but the best for me is definatly
Milan 3-2 Inter
when they were leading 2-0 at HT from goals from c.zanetti and stankovic... JDT pulled one back, then kaka scored from outside the box, and with 6 mins to go ... seedorf releases a bullet from no where to win the match.... the adrenaline in me that time was unbelievable

AC Milan 4 - 0 (88/89 CL Final)

AC Milan 6 - 0 Internazionale (2000/2001 Serie A)
Botafogo 1 - 0 Flamengo (89 Carioca Championship Final)

That Belgium-USSR match... u know man I come from Ukraine (former USSR) and many people there believe that we were rubbed that day. That the referee should award a penalty for the soviets, and that the Belgians scored 2 goals in offside position... so I don't know. BTW why is this match one of your favorites? Ussr considered one of the strongest teams that years.

Jesus, The USSR was really shamefully HARMED by the referee on that game, my friend!!! The soviets were outdoing the belgiuns, it was definitely a pitty.
Well, you could say that I'm a 'commie', so I love the soviet team those days.
Soviet football was harmed for a long time by the western referees and UEFA (because the cold war and all that nuclear missiles threat and stuff)...
In that particilar match also I know that the coach Lobanovsky even didn't make to the match, he was bussy making the arrangements for the next match, he was so sure in the success (that what my dad told me)... But we did have great team that years including Belanov, Blokhin (both of them Balloon od'dore winners), Zavarov, Aleinichev, Mihailichenko, Dasaev and others... Very great team, made to the final at euro 88 only to loose to Holland... We did beat them in the group stage earlier 1-0 and were better in the final, but still lost (Belanov missed a penalty and hit the bar). And we beat th italians in the semis, who hosted the tournament.

Oh yes, The soviet performance at Euro 88 was really outstanding, it was a very moving and lively side, with a game style based on an incessant and extremely pacy. interplay between the players. One must remember too that in the same year they have won the gold medal at the Olympics football tournament in Seoul, with a memorable display (1 - 0, with a scorching lob over the keeper by Sabitchev) against a very good brazilian side, with players like Romario, Taffarel, Muller and Branco.

where you from in the ukraine?
do you still live there?
dynamo kiev killing barcelona was awesome, i was only like 6 years old but i still remember it.
and the kiev-bayern match was heartbreaking
2-0 in bayern and then to tie 3-3
in recent memory england-portugal at the euros was a great game, but the best ever would have to be the worst day of my life, may 25, 2005: milan-liverpool

Well not entirely correct... the first leg was at kiev, and the second was in munich, and it ended only 1-0 (and not 2-0). I remember when I watched that match I was about 16 years old, I was all shaking because of excitement, yes football can do it for u sometimes... We were great that year, beat Arsenal 3-1 and Real 2-0 (who was the outgoing champions), Sheva was magnificant that year... realy classic performance (in CL maybe his best, even before he came to Milan).
P.S. I'm from Donezk originally, but now I live in Israel.

Inter 3-3 Roma - it was 0-0 at half time. both teams hit the post in the dying minutes.

No problem, dude. :)
I was indeed a huge fan of the soviet football in the 80's, and that squad of Dynamo Kiev was certainly of the best heirs of the soviet football legacy.
The east-european football is kind'a underatted by the west... we did managed to creat many great teams for the past 50 years: Hungary (50's), Poland (70's-80's), Czechoslovakia and Czech Rep. (60s, 90's), Bulgaria (90s), Romania (90's), Yugoslavia and Croatia (60's, 80's-90's) and ofcause USSR (60's and 80's)... and did u know that except germany the soviets have the most appearances in the EuroCup final (60, 64, 72 and 88... won only once though, the first tournament ever in France 60).
So as u can see the eastern block has a huge football history and legacy..
But unfortunately the east won only 2 international trophies, both european and never the world cup...
I hope that after this summer we could add Sheva's Ukraine to that list as one of great eastern teams...
And btw in the club competition, as far as I know we have like7 cups:
Steau Bucharest (CL)
Red Star Belgrad (CL)
Dynamo Kiev (twice Cup-Winners-Cup and european super cup)
Dynamo Tbilisi (Cup winners cup)
CSKA (last year UEFA cup winners)...
So many great matches but it's always the one happen many years a go that I remember best than the recent.
Remember WC 94 - Spain vs Italy. 3 mins before elimination Roby Baggio coolly placed the ball to score the equalizer. What a class player. You guys know the rest.
I'll always remember 1991 final Barca v Sampdoria. 0-0 till extra time when Ronald Keoman blasted one of the greatest freekick to win it 1-0. Keoman was exceptional throughout the game. Infact, I never seen any player or Keoman himself repeat this kind of display till now. Controling the game throughout the 90 mins from the sweeper position. Most commanding perfomance I ever seen from a single player.
Italy V Holland, Euro 2000. Greatest defensive display by the italian teams. Simply legendary but ended up in tears in the final.
Simply unforgettable.

Fredrikson, the name of the ref. became a curse overnight and ... and in 1990 WC in Italy,
the same swede (i think swede) freaking Freakerson did not notice how Maradona saved his team with the same "hand of god". It was USSR taking a corner and a header was stopped on the goal-line by Diego's arm. The score was 0-0, we lost that game.
There are couple factual inaccuracies:
Lobanovsky was at the game with Belgium of course. Blokhin scored one goal in 86 vs. Canada but he was on the bench most of the time (he didnt play vs. Belgium) he was 32 or 34... The euro-88 was played in Germany not in Italy. The USSR was not much better in the final, may be just a tad.
And two goals we have to recall from 86 and 88: Marco van Basten in the final - the volley that Dasaev never expected from 30-35 yards from a sideline following Gullits long ball; as well as "Ratz beats Bats" in France-USSR group match WC-86, what a rocket (same power as in Clarance Seedorff's power drive for Real! BTW, the USSR team in 86 had 7-8 players from Kiev and Dnepr. (Protasov, Litovchenko, Krakovsky) on the pitch at anytime...
:-((( freaking Freadrikson!
MVB: Italy V Holland, Euro 2000. Greatest defensive display by the italian teams.
Yep I remember that match, Cannavaro, Maldini and Nesta at their best there... still the dutch managed to create chances and had miss 2 penalties and once hit the bar. But that was great game, both teams gave their best there.
Ukranian CA: The euro-88 was played in Germany not in Italy. The USSR was not much better in the final, may be just a tad.
U right it did played in Germany... and for the final I know that after Gulit's goal the dutch went on defensive and we pressed them through out the whole match, and that great Van Basten volley was scored in fast counter-attack... and we did creat more chances.

One of the best game in the WC I have seen was
Brazil vs. the USSR in Spain in 82. Very classy performance by one side with two-goal comeback late in the game (both goals are featured at fifaworldcup.com site under classic games ): Eder and Sacrates.
Belgium - USSR 86 was mentioned already, but there was also
USSR - Hungary 6-0; the first game of the WC against an unbeaten winner of a qualifying group. Hungary could not recover after the first 4 min and 0-2 ending with 0-6 final. I don't think Hungary has ever recovered since.
The final was very cute too:
Argentina vs. W. Germany 3-2. After the "hand-of-god" play Maradona started to play like one, fnishing off England with the ego-centric goal of the century, Belgium with a similar drive and Germany together with Burruchaga and a supporting crew.
Now going off the topic a bit:
1990 was the most boring WC ever: USSR beating Cameroon 4-0 in the non-decisive last game .
1994 - a beggining of the rise of the USA team, senseless killing of the Columbian defender who scored an own-goal in a loss to the Americans, senseless win against Cameroon 6-1 again with Salenko's (Zenit) poker.
1998 - no points for the US, ZZ = Zedane, Zedane
2002- Korea is on top of Portugal and Spain, thank you refs. Most disgusting performance from the Russians (the mental block). Awsome Brazilians.
2004 Euro - Russia demonsrates its consistency in having a mental burn-out (block) in tough games. And then, when it didn't count (like in WC-90, 94) they shone - crushed Greece the Champions-to-be, almost eliminating them with a possible 3rd goal late in the game.

1990- u called that most boring WC ever? I know that it was pretty poor tournament and was criticized by many, but at least that tournament had some memorable matches like between England-Cameroon, and had some tense clashes with big names like Holland-Germany, Brazil-Argentina or England-Germany and Italy-Argentina... The most disgraceful WC in my opinion is at Korea/Japan, discuss it a lit bit latter.
94- "beginning of the rise of US team"... what rise? U call it "rise"? And btw Solenko scored 5 goals in that game against Cameroon and not four ("poker" means 4 right?).
98- it is the best WC I think, since Mexico 86... many good games, and not thanks to France... talking about Holland, Argentina, Brazil and England... France was boring, without even one striker worth to talk about. And ZZ... well he had lucky to play against the ghost-Brasil and scored two goals with his bald head... yeah very great performance. If this disgusting team had meet Argentina, Holland, Brasil (in earlier stages) or even England they would had their azz whop and sent to dressroom...
02- this is the most promissing and most disgusting and boring tournament ever (except if u are a korean). Teams like France, Argentina and Cameroon with so many expectations failed to show even half of their worth and were out already in first round with very distasteful performance... other european teams seemed tired like Italy or England, and played very boring (and the dutch even didn't make it pass the qualifying round having a very good team). Germany... lets look their rout to the final: Paraguay, USA and Korea (all games were won by 1 goal)... does it look like World Cup tournament??? And the "awesome" brasilians... Honestly I prefered to see Korea winning that cup, and not that "ego-centric" self-loving unproffesional team. That Brazil was the worst team they had since... ever, and still managed to win the tournament. That tournament didn't produce even one match (or at least one moment) worth to remember, so what are u talking about???

Sash i think ur mistaken.. ofcourse '02 was a 'different' world cup to the others, first cuz it was hosted by 2 countries and another because it was in asia and the temperature/climate was different.. that certainly affected certain teams..
i am an italy fan since 94, and been watching closely all their games since then. in '02, italy did put in good performances, but if u really saw all the games they played in, you will understand how badly the referees were. they cancelled 5 goals, in 3 games. 2 vs Croatia, 2 vs Mexico, 1 vs Korea, and we all know about the Korea penalty they had in the 1st half that buffon saved, and im sure many also remember totti's red card.. i thought italy were goin to win it really :/
and im pretty sure that many consider 82 to be the greatest one so far.. im not really too sure what happened in 86 that makes u change ur mind..
and yeah in 98, i dont think france deserved it.. they scraped through vs Italy and Croatia, but they deserved their win against Brazil

It was typo... I ment that WC 98 was best since 86, that mean better than 90 and 94 and 02, I re-edited it (got it fixed).
But still I couldn't say firmly what WC was best ever, and I don't think that 82 was better than 86... both were great and had some classic clashes (no dutch... whatta shame).

What about Paraguay?? France was through only after golden ball that came after like 100 minutes... and the final was very poor, till today I can't understand what happened to Brazil in that game, it's like they were tired or sleepy or whatever (don't have to mention in what condition Ronaldo played).

Agreed on 1st part. Strongly disagree on the 2nd. US-Germany was a clash, very good performance by both teams. Korean and japanese teams fought the butts off. Yes, the officials seemed to help the Koreans against Italians, though who would have thought that the hosts will play at this level. And Brazil was just one level above all,
"masterstvo ne propiosh"! I watched their final and the other game while traveling around the globe. It was fun to watch Brazil play, I had no doubts they could defeat anyone starting from 0-1 or 0-2. You are entitled to your own opinion. It will be fun to watch Brazil, Argentine and many others in Germany-06. Anyone going?

Everyone keeps referring to the same Milan-Inters game. What year was that?
And did Sheva play well? I think he did since he has already produced 13 goals against Inter.
Carlisle? Is that the town where Dickenson college is, not far from Harrisburg, the capital of PA?
That game was in 03/04 season...
Inter had 2-0 lead in half-time, but Milan still managed to come back and win with that great goal by Seedorf. It was best derby I think I saw, Kaka had one of his best performances ever and scored a neat goal too.
And as for Sheva he played pretty average, was guarded tight by Inter defence (they always watch him close, and btw he scored 14 goals in the derby) but still managed to create couple chances. We did outplayed them through out the whole match, as not like the two past years that even though we win we aren't the superior team (and lately we even lost the derby... we deserve to loose though).

I don't know, I didn't like italy in WC 02, Trappatoni almost never played Del-Piero - Totti-Vieri... They were in that stage biggest italians stars but somehow never used simultaneously, and even when they were eventually combined together (vs Korea I think) the team still looked heavy and unimpressive.
The best italian performance I saw was in Euro 04, with 2 new faces in the squdra Pirlo and Cassano. Many people didn't notice, but after Totti was sent off against Denmark and replaced by Pirlo against Sweden Italy looked like a different team... much more better I mean.

International Games
England 1 - 1 Germany 1990, we lost on penalties as usual, i cried :( ;)
England 4 - 1 Holland 1996, the 'SAS' were unplayable that day
England 2 - 2 Argentina 1998, Owens goal, Beckhams kick, out on penalties 3rd tournament in a row !
Germany 1 - 5 England 2001, Revenge! even Heskey scored :)
England 3 - 2 Argentina 2005, only a friendly but also a great game and a win over one of our many rivals
Club matches
Man Utd 3 - 3 Crystal Palace 1990 FA Cup final, and we won the replay :D
Man Utd 2 - 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1993, my 11th birthday and Utds first title for 26 years is about to be ruined by Wednesday who hold a 1 - 0 lead until the last minute, when out of nowhere Steve Bruce powers a header in to equalise :) then in the 7th (yes 7th ;) ) minute of injury time another corner, another Bruce header, and Utd have from nowhere won the game  cue a famous moment as Fergie and Brian Kidd (Utds assistant manager) run onto the pitch and start dancing :D
Milan 4 - 0 Barca 1994, Total destruction of Cruyff's side and healed the wounds of the previous years final :delol:
Man Utd 9 - 0 Ipswich 1995, Andy Cole went crazy and scord 5  Sparky got a couple too as Ipswich were put to the sword
Liverpool 4 - 3 Newcastle 1996, probably the best game i've ever seen as a neutral, both sides totally attacking with the game being decided in the last few seconds
Liverpool 4 - 3 Newcastle 1997, Not quite on a par with the previous clash, maybe because this time everyone expected a 7 goal thriller :D
Chelsea 3 - 5 Man Utd 1998, they were lucky it wasnt a lot more than 5 and we gave them 3 consolation goals too !
Man Utd 3 - 3 Barca 1998, twice  Cole and Yorke tore them to shreads but we had no answer to Rivaldo's genius, excellent attacking games.
Juventus 2 - 3 Man Utd 1999, 2 down and going out, but Keane turns things around spectaularly even though he knew he would miss the final. Truly immense performance from a Utd legend :respect:
Man Utd 2 - 1 Bayern 1999, "Sheringham, and Solsksjaer has won it !!!" i think that commentary is etched into every Utd fans memmory :D
Spurs 3 - 5 Man Utd 2001, usual story, Utd are 3 down and heading for defeat at half time, only to come out and score 5 in the second half
Milan 6 - 0 Inter 2001, seems like it happened only yesterday :D
Milan 3 - 2 Inter 2004, Utd style against the odds comeback made all the sweeter by it being against Inter :)
Arsenal 2 - 4 Man Utd 2005, Arsenal go gung-ho trying to get revenge on Utd for ending their 49 game unbeaten run, Utd know whats coming and destroy them on the counter, even after having a man sent off
There are many more of course but this will do as a starter ;)

It was a good game, and as usual we , the russians, had nothing to lose or win in that game... pretty much so - only miracle in other games could put us through.
The last time I experienced that with our National teams was
during Euro-04 watching Greece vs. Russia.
In the hindsight, I would want that we scored that 3rd goal and eliminated the champions to be.
Turkey was stuffed on the thanksgiving day last year!
STUFFED TURKEY! anyone cares for white meat?
I also think that the punishment that turkey got for the fight after the swiss game was not severe enough.

yes, Salenko from Zenit of course, your favorite team and this is why you liked this much...
Egoistka,
have you ever seen USSR-Hungary in WC-86, 6-0 start of the group turney?
you can find a goal by Rutz in the next game of WC-86, France-USSR, 1-1, at
fifaworldcup.com under "classic football" / "video archives" / "Goal of the Century" (down in the middle) then find Rats, USSRvFRA.

International Matches-
Nigeria 3-2 Spain(France98)= i can't forget Sunday oliseh's shot outside eighteen yards
Holland 2-1 Argentina(France 98)= Bergkamp's Magical Goal
Nigeria 4-3 Brazil (Olympic Atlanta 96 Semi finals)- it was after Brazil humiliated us leading 3-1, then suddenly Ikpeba reduced the deficit to 1 goal, then here comes the lanky striker who goes by the name Kanu scored 2 Incredible goals which made Bebeto drown into tears
Nigeria 2-2 Cameroun(ACN 2000 Finals)- Cameroun were leading 2-0 and we equalized 2 goals with thunder shot from Okocha but unfortunately we lost by penalties
England 5-1 Germany- that was classic!!!
Holland 0-0 Italy ( Euro 2000 Semi-final)
there are many more that i couldn't remember
Milan-Barcelona 4:0 in 1994 was a match that i watched many many times, but i will watch it twice as much and still enjoy it.
About unforgetable matches...hmm.. Liverpool-Alaves UEFA Cup final few years ago had everything... Totenham-Manchester United 3:5 (3:0) was great, Milan-Lazio 4:4 from 2000 was for heart attack, and one more match that we all want to forget will certanly be remembered as one of the best matches ever...it's last years CL final !
Shomo if u are a nigerian fan, how could u forget WC 94 quarters Italy 2-1 Nigeria...
The nigerians put on a good fight and were equal to italians, forced them to go into the extra time, only to lose to Baggio's penalty kick (golden goal i think).

yeah i forgot to mention it, it was a very tough match but for me i was dissapointed when we lost the match by giving away the penalty
when it comes to excitement, i rate these games in terms of what excited me the most:
1- Milan 3-2 Inter (stankovic, c.zanetti, JDT, kaka, and seedorf)
2- Milan 0-0 Juventus (old traffod i was there)
3- Portugal 2-2 England (portugal win on penalties in euro2004)
4- Milan 3-3 Liverpool (worst day of my life)
5- Milan 4-1 Deportivo La Coruna (it was a miracle, i predicted the exact same outcome of the game with my friend on the phone before kaka's first goal)
6- Jordan 2-2 Japan (one of the saddest days of my life, we lost unjustly vs the asian champions in the Asian cup in 2004, it wouldve taken us to the semi's and anything else would have been easier, we lost on penalties)
7- Jordan 0-1 Iran (we needed a win here and we couldve easily made it to the world cup!)
8- Italy 1-2 France (couldnt believe it euro2000)
9- Juventus 1-3 Milan (we destroyed them)
10- Milan 4-0 Barcelona (first game ive ever seen, it made me the person I am today!)
