The city is renovating dramatically, yesterday the metro was inaugurated. Believe it or not, Torino didn't have a metro line, despite being a wealthy city.

While I've always liked the Olympics, I think I like more of the Winter games than of the Summer games...but ask me that question again in 2008, OK? I love to watch the skating, in all forms, and the downhill skiing and of course the HOCKEY! Don't know if I ever mentioned it here before but I was a hockey fan to the Nth degree before I discovered soccer. And I fell for soccer immediately b/c it's so similar to hockey! Let's see what else do I like to see...oh the luge races and the cross country skiing is good too. I'm anxious to see what sort of TV schedule we end up with and when this stuff will be aired.

Torino put in a metro just in time for the Olympics?? Wow!

Torino put in a metro just in time for the Olympics?? Wow!
well, just a small part of the first line (7 km). But the dice has been thrown (spelled? ) and the other parts will be finished within 2010. At least the central ones.

The city hall is giving (few) free tickets for concerts of many artists: Duran Duran, Anastacia, the canadian spoiled punky girl (her name? ), other italian artists like Bocelli..artists for every age. I luckily got the tickets for Ennio Morricone's concert, the great composer that made many great movies' scores like Once upon a time in America, spaghetti western movies, Cinema Paradiso, Mission, the Untouchables.. i'm excited, because his scores are part of my life since my childhood and for the first time i will get to watch a live concert. Not a wild concert but a happening with a history maker to be remembered in years to come.

It's unbelievable that a quiet city like Torino (for italian standards of loudness) is turning into an international city all of a sudden. Media everywhere, loads of tourists, antiterrorist police, metal detectors, the new metro.

But the nicest surprise are the frash babes coming into the city :haha: . I'm obviously preparing for a warm welcome. :D

Although I hate to say this, I am predicting many more doping scandals in these Olympics.
I'm sorry but the Olympic Games just aren't what they used to be. People no longer believe anybody who won a medal did so cleanly. And who can blame them? I don't have the statstics in front of me, I remeber distinctly some scandals in 02.

If my memory is correct, one skier, I think he was Spanish, one 2 or 3 gold medals in cross-country skiing. After the whole figure-skating bribe scandal, the Russians were very mad at having to share the Gold with a Canadian couple. To appease the Russians, the Olympic Committee took away one of the gold medals from the spanish skiier for a doping violation and gave them to a russian. However, the Spaniard got to keep his other golds. If he was on doping for one of the events, why would they think he was clean for the others? And this was just one scandal out of several others.

And also with the bribing scandals, the Olympics are turning into a soap opera. The whole doping threat is more evident at more evident at the Summer Games, with more Track & Field athletics, but Winter events such as cross-country skiing and speed skating will be cast under a shadow of doubt.

When did the Olympic Games become like this? Since when is it more important to win a gold medal rather than faithfully and honestly represent your country? I think it is absolutely disgusting to watch athletes who are participating in the holiest of sporting events to drop to a level of cheating like using performance enhancing drugs.

I can guarantee you that there will be more than one doping scandal at the Games, as much as I hate to say so.

Kui

Actually the reason why doping seems to be so prevalent is that they are actually being serious in cracking down on this cr@p. I would make an educated guess and say it was much easier to get away with doping 16 years or more ago than it is today.
Thus you get more people gettin caught due to the improved technology to catch these clowns.

By the way, our pair of figure-skating form Lithuania never will get gold cuz russians have too much influence to referees. They cant believe that Lithuania is an independent state and is not a part of Rodina Rossia :devf: :nana: :5dito:

After my post on doping, 12 cross-country skiers and one skeletonist (I think thats the word for it) have already suspended. Maybe even more athletes by now, but I do not have the full statisitcs.
However, this is not a real attempt by the Olympic Commitee to catch cheaters, but just some desperation moves to make it seem like they are doing something. Just read these excerpts from an AP story on American Skeletonist Zack Lund:

"A court agreed that Zach Lund is no drug cheat. Then it dashed the slider's Olympic dream anyway- and along with it, the turmoil- wracked U.S. skeleton team's best hope for gold."
"Lund was banned from the Turin Olympics on Friday for taking a common hair- restoration pill with an ingredient that can be used to mask steroids."
"The Court of Arbitration for Sport- while saying it believes Lund did not cheat- ruled he should serve a one-year suspension anyhow, retroactive to Nov. 10 and enforced imedeately."

So what is exactly is the point of banning an athlete if he did not cheat. Imagine what this guy must be going through. He probably worked so hard to get to the Olympics, only to be told he can't compete for using a hair-restoration drug. There is really nothing I can say here. And there have been similar stories with cross-country skiiers who have been given 5-day bans for having raised hemoglobin, the red blood cells that can increase endurance. This is probably being caused by dehydration and a change to a high altitude environment.
I agree with a strict policy toward doping users. But banning athletes with no proof and who have authentic excuces is not what should be done. The IOC is just losing all credibility and respect for banning innocent athletes while the ones on doping are winning gold medals.

Well it is quite unfortunate what happen to Zach Lund. Yet... the questions remain and the onus belongs to this athelete and his priorities. He needed to ask himself what was more important. Trying to grow his hair using "propecia", which contains a chemical that can mask doping??? OR Foregoing follicle problem and trying to get the chance for an olympic medal???
Apparently he clearly wasnt thinking or at least was totally oblivious to any IOC rules and procedures concerning any doping policies. For that, he paid a huge sacrifice.
Did I think he cheated??? No I dont, but that is beside the point. He broke IOC policy and that is the reason why he legitimately was not allowed to participate in the Torino 2006 Games.
I would agree, that there is a difference between true dopers and those caught in the crossfire. It is not the fault of the IOC for the poor judgements of all players... dopers or non-dopers. The rules and regulations are so clear cut, you really have to be an idiot to even be close to the suspicion of using drugs.

Good post, Kui, but I still fell really bad for Lund. And if a court decides that he didn't cheat, why should he still be banned? Maybe a fine or something like that woul've been sufficient. And another thing, how would doping help someone to get on a sled and just go downhill as fast as they can?
And you didn't mention the skiiers, who I am sure did not take any drugs and just have had raised levels of hemgolobin due to the conditions.

If you have watched any of the skating so far, they've talked at length about the new scoring system that was devised after the scandal at the 2004 Olympics. The one aspect of it that I find the most interesting is that there are 12 judges, but at random only 9 scores are used.

Thats not true...in Salt Lake City was a huge scandal, cause americans gave a lot of medals to americans and tried to give Russia as less as possible number of medals. Its completely not true, what you say! Russians maybe not very good at football, but we are the best in Figure Skating, biathlon (Germany here is good as well) and Hockey. I m sorry, but whatever medals we get, we get coz of hard work...

Today, by the way we got 2 golden (biathlon, figure skating) and 2 silver (biathlon, speed skating)...and we got them all honestly!

I dont know if Britain is actually challenging for any events, we just send people over to carry on the legacy of Eddie the Eagle, that being glorious failure :D

One of our team made the top 20 in one of those 'throw yourself down a hill' events (Luge/Skeleton etc) i think thats about the best we've managed so far

reminds me of the Baxter case, the only time in history Britain managed to get a medal in skiing (a bronze in 2002) and it was stripped from him :( the reason was that he used a vicks inhaler  He even took the precaution of having the UK team doctors run tests on it to make sure it didnt contain any banned substances, however he made the mistake of assuming the UK and US versions of the same product contained the same ingrediants, while the UK version is perfectly legal the US version isnt  and so Britain is still waiting for its first skiing medal....harsh on Baxter but thems the rules.

And if your accusations were to even be minutely true, why didnt an "Amercian" pair win the gold in Figure skating???
Now you have brought up some good points. I dont like events that require judges to score. That opens up a bunch of criticism because everyone's opinion can and has been different than that of the official judges. Dont think that the Russian teams/athletes did not have share of questionable calls in their favor as well.
If you are gonna expect people to be "truthful", some honesty should come from you as well, for what you have said about team USA is untrue and very hypocritical.

Best case of judges and stupidity was with the ski jumper Thomas fogdö that came from around where I live. He invented the "V-style", he jumped longer than everyone else, but the judges gave him low points more or less taking away all medals from him. Today most ski-jumpers uses his style and they win... Must be bitter being him, altough he will always be remember for his innovation at least.

Of course to even have a judge in a sport where you can quantify how far you jump is retarded enough...

A little comment about the Torini games...
AT first I was wondering if you Eye-talians were skimping out on the "bling" by putting a hole right straight through the medal. I didnt have a scale to compare it to until maybe a podium ceremony. I must say this... that it is a friggin big medal! I dont blame you all for making the design the way it is. Looks like a cd. Good job Torino.

Yes judges were from different countries, but the result is a summ of marks from every judge..and americans, together with Canadians marked Russians much lower than the rest of the judges..almost in all competitions (doesnt it look a lit bit strange...)..And Americans just didnt have a good pair to participate, thats why...but there was Canadian pare if you remember (I mean figure skating), when Berejnaya and Siharulidze had to share golden medals with Canadians...does it sound normal...Or Sarah Hue..(here i m not even gonna comment - completely out of any talent - golden medal!!!!)...
Olympic games recently become more and more political, like Eurovision as well. Everyone marks higher a neighbour...thats crap!

It was got only cause of hard work....check the infor more carefully. Do you know what kind of dopping??? This is doctors fault and a fault of russian team doctors...first should ve checked if the medicine that she gives not in the list of dopping, second should have checked what she took...Because if Russian doctors would have declared before the competitons that Pileva takes this medicine nothing would happen, its ALLOWED to use this medicine (half of norvegian team takes this medicine cause they are astmatics, and they participate in the competitions)..The mistake was that it havent been checked and declared before the competitions!!! If I know what kind of doping? :) At least in each news I hear the proced active agent medicine or stuff they found is called "Carphedon" and from what I knew, she did not used it for asthma, she used the medicine for her ankle injury in January.

That's one quote from an article I found on msn.
"
Dr. Nikolai Durmanov, head of the Russian Anti-Doping Committee, said a doctor who treated Pylewa in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk for an ankle injury in January gave her an over-the-counter medication that did not list carphedon as one of its ingredients."

Uhm..I am a bit confused about it. Why? That ankle injury was before the worldcup in Ruhpolding (germany) at January 13th, Pylewa started again in Antholz (January 19th). So I am wondering, why they did not found anything in Antholz, but now mostly 4 weeks later at the olympic games and why this stuff is not listes as one of its ingredients, when the articles I read declare Carphedon like this:

Carphedon - an active agent developed in Russia that has stood since 1998 on the IOC-Dopingliste. It increases the physical efficiency and lifts the tolerance against cold. Carphedon counts disguised possesses Amphetaminstruktur as a designer stimulant.

Sooner or later we will knew more.

I said that she took it not for astma, but cause of her TRAUMA (injury). I m not really into medical stuff, but I heard so many comments on that today (Russian and English TV) and checked inet as well, it says that what it does: improves blood circulation in the brain...And also I heard that 50% of Norwegian skiing team takes this medicine...I think it s not fair..and poor Pileva..

Today Russian Hockey team won against Sweden - must be that all of the players from Russian team took doping, otherwise how could they win??? They are bad players and cannot win only on hard work...Actually, probably all russian participants from the Olympics who got medals have been on doping...lets disqualify them all..
...Bulls**t!!!well, IMO Sweden lads were pissed off... they played like in holiday tour... no defence at all... I wondered if there are five forwards in the team cuz you can not let russians score so many goals by counterattacks... that was a very frustrating match cuz I know that swedens are much better that they were yesterday  :wallbang:

Russian hockey team also doesnt contain "boys from the street"...I am sorry, but if Sweden is good, why they didnt score even one goal? Its hockey, not football...so..0 goals shows that maybe they are not that good...Nothing against Sweden, though.

Evgenij Plushenko took a golden medal today!!! I m really proud of him!!! ;) (maybe you think that he also doesnt deserve his medal and someone was better than him, but he unfairly got higher marks?)

I am not sure, if your post and your post about russian hockey team was refered to me, so if yes then....do I see a bit of covered reaction here? ;)

I think I did not posted anywhere, that the whole russian olympic team is doped or does not deserve a medal, just because they win right ?

First of all, at figure skating no one is better than Plushenko imo (btw, thank god he did not got hurt in the car crash he had this morning - phew), his performance was near to be perfect. His technical and artistic performance is outstanding, no doubt about it. He has charisma, he has passion and fire on the ice (same goes for Totmianina/Marinin), something I do miss for example by some chinese athlets, for me they are mostly a bit too technical.

Secondly imo no athlet (from whatever nation) deserve a olympic medal, when he/she failed a doping test.

You posted earlier before, that the russian team won all their medals honestly and based of hard work. Pylewa failed a doping test.
How can a athlet (no matter which nation) win a medal honestly or only based of hard work, when they found banned substances after the competition, so the athlet was not "clean".
For me doping has nothing to do with honestly or hard work. Sure we all can blame her doctor, but in the end its the ATHLET himself who win or lose a competition/a medal/, who has to run doping tests, who has to deal with the consequences.

At Pylewa's case the circumstances are still mysteriouse.
She failed the doping test, her A and B-Probe was positive and is suspended 2 years now.

Russian officials at the Olympics explained that a doctor treated Pyleva for an trauma (=ankle injury) in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk and gave her an over-the-counter medication in January that did not list the banned substance.

Ok, Pylewa got that trauma at January 13th, she started on another worldcup at January 19th. Her doctor gave her an over-the-counter medication in January, but Pylewa got catched on Febrary 11th, so mostly 1 months later. Why they did not found anything in Antholz or before the olympic games?
How much over-the-counter-medication must she got in January then, when they still found a high dosis of this banned stimulance called Carphedon after that long time at the olympic games? So sorry when I am a bit suspiciouse in that case. :dontkn:

EDIT: I searched a bit, and found now the official statement about the hearing from the ioc. Here are a few details:

14. The Athlete mentioned that she was injured and twisted her foot about one month ago. In order to alleviate the pain, her personal doctor, Dr Nina Vinogradova, Director of the Medical Service of the Sport Training Centre of Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, prescribed her a medicine called phenotropile, sold as vitamins and manufactured by a Russian vitamin manufacturer. There was no mention of the substance Carphedon in the notice accompanying such medicine.

15. The Athlete mentioned that she took the medicine from 23 to 25 January, 2006, and from 10 to 12 February 2006.

(personal quote) ..hmm..she got injured around january 13, started again in Antholz at january 19 and at January 23 (10 days after the injury) she got that medicine from her personal doctor? :googly:

16. Dr Nikolay Durmanov, Doctor of the Russian Olympic Committee, informed the Disciplinary Commission that the Russian Olympic Committee knew that the substance Carphedon was contained in the medicine phenotropile. The Russian Olympic Committee requested on several occasions the manufacturer to indicate the presence of Carphedon in the medicine, which was not done. In addition, the Russian Olympic Committee published several articles warning the athletes and other concerned persons of the presence of Carphedon in this medicine.

17. Dr Nikolay Durmanov admitted that the present adverse analytical finding was a violation of the Rules.

(personal quote) Regarding to point 16, Pylewa took that medicine phenotropile although she got warned that a banned substance like Carphedone is inside this medicine? That means nothing else, thats its her own fault then, if she knews about this and took that medicine again before she starts :dontkn:

I tell you what. The Us snowboard girl absolutely earned the Silver Medal. She thought she had won the GOLD before the finish. Celebration and the notion of "earning" something Egoistka comes after the final result. You seem to have the pre-destined notion that russians deserve the gold because they "earned" it, yet when the result doesnt go into your liking, a conspiracy must have cheated them from it. That is quite childish. Assuming you're are not like 12 yrs old unless that is the age you are getting married at, I might have thought you were ACTUALLY a twelve year old. Let the foolishness of US snowboarder Jacobellis perhaps teach you this lesson, for her pre-ordained notion that she had earned something which had yet been decided upon came back as a kick in her a$$. She deserved that kick too!

Kui, I completely agree with you saying that the 'US Snownoard girl' (actually Lindsey Jacobellis) not deserving the gold medal To quote Yogi Berra 'It ain't over till its over.' I usually root for Americans at the Olympics, but I can't stand to see pompous athletes who are full of themselves showboat or talk about how great they are before the competition.
That is why I don't like Johnny Weir, who made terrible excuces after finishing a dissapointing 5th in Men's figure skating, and Bode Miller, who sounds like it is a punishment to actually be at the Olympics. Here is what he said in an interview:
"It is other people who want me to win medals,'' he said. "Fame is almost a poison. I couldn't care less. Some people say I make mistakes, [but] I just say that this is the secret of enjoying life. I hate monotony. Why don't they leave me freedom of choice? People want to impose choices which aren't necessarily mine.''
If he is so ungrateful to be here, then what is stoppinh him from leaving?
And egomaniac Shani Davis, who is just looking for personal glory and couldn't care less about his country's performance.

That is why I prefer to see athletes like speed-skaters Chad Hedrick and Joey Cheek, skiier Tobey Davis, who are the exact opposites of those mentioned before- they aren't pompous and they don't have a big mouth. And they actually win.

Bode has to be the one who is way over the top. Like the Yogi Berre saying, it is probably best to talk Sh!t after you at least win. And if you do win, talking smack is still a bit over the top for me and many others who believe in sportsmanship.
The thing that irks me about Bode is his overall attitude to his sport. There is no doubt that this man could conquer mountains and be truly one of the best. But to be the best it just doesnt take winnning victories or having an impressive trophy case display. In fact someone like Bode will not end up having an impressive track record because of attitude. When you look at impressive, we should look at guys like Johan Olaf Koss or Bjorn Dahle who kept their humbleness.
The men... if you can call them that in figure skating... yeah I didnt care for the excuses that was brought up. "I was having stomach pains... I had IV's stuck in both arms to help me rehydrate blah blah blah." Even Michelle Kwan, as much as I did think she was a pretty good skater on the ice, her handling of getting a free pass in these games was done in a very inconsiderate manner. She should have kept her promise back in 2002 games that she was done with Olympic competition. Her interview and reasons for withdrawing put a dark shadow on her career. She was saying "Oh I have to pay attention to my body... I got cramped up because of the cold weather at the opening ceremony blah blah blah". Why did she not pay attention to her body when she petitioned the Olympic Committee to give her a waiver, which resulted in promising Sasha Cohen losing her spot and chance to win a medal??? Why after her previous two Olympics at her physical best, decided to attend this opening ceremony when not at her physical best??? She also in past games refused to even stay at the Olympic Village insisting on lodging at a 5 Star hotel. 90% of the participating athletes attended the opening ceremony Michelle! And some of them won medals and a good deal of them did stay at the Olympic Village.
As for Shani Davis... he has what some would call "angry black man" syndrome which this country the US is still trying to come to terms with and hopefully for the better we find better solutions to this problem. I will say to Shani... well done! Enjoy that medal. It is yours if you choose it to be yours alone and not for us to share with you. Do however learn from those such as Jonetta Flowers and the great Jesse Owens whom through their grace showed the world in clear view the errors of our ways and our prejudices. In a world today, where all sides claim to have righteousness but commit the worse of sins, the small sunshine of grace can bring hope to all of us under the heavens.

First of all. Let me give you the benefit of doubt and apologize for calling you a 12 year old girl. My point about the snowboard girl to your claim is that though we support our countries, it would be foolish for us to think our athletes have a preordained right to winning gold medal. No doubt, perhaps... that Jacobellis was the odds on favorite to be the gold medalist. Through her arrogance, she deservedly ended up selling herself short.
Now you've said that all the medals Russia has gotten, they have earned. Does this mean all other countries didnt in your words "earn" their medals??? It was you who made the insinuation that unfair judging prevented the Russians from getting medals??? Furthermore you've accused the US of being behind this. You didnt appreciate it when someone else laid the very same accusation against Russia and its judges. Why the hypocracy??? Neither you nor the other person can prove any of this. Yet you seemed to believe what cannot be proven and then didnt like it when someone did the very same thing to you.
In Olympic competition, they are always questionable calls and judgement. And it has not been only the Russian teams or athletes who been robbed. It has happen to all participants from day one of the modern Olympics. Everyone can make the claim you have made... that is, that their athletes "earned" their medals and/or unfair judgement calls prevented them from winning anything. Many a wise dont go so far with such a claim because such claims come off as unwise, disingenuous, dishonest, immature, and spoiled, and greedy.

Oh our hopes and dreams of any medal in Men's hockey...taken away in 20 mintues with the Russians. We, simply put could not outplay them. But unlike some other Canadians I know, I am in fact still very proud of them and what they had accomplished. I do believe that they did go there with the intent to do us proud. I do believe that they gave it everything they had. They were there because they were CHOOSEN...and because they accepted the challenge. That alone makes them worthy. Worthy of our respect and support for their efforts. NOT of our critisisms and off handed remarks of what they SHOULD have done. They are certainly a lot of people who seem to think that they KNOW how the athletes felt and what they were thinking ...BULL$HIT ! It absolutley amazes me how some of my fellow Canadians were so quick to jump all over Team Canada and disect every play that was made. I had no idea I knew so many people that knew the inner workings of Olympic level hockey...kudos to them. Hopefully then I will see them either playing or coaching our next group of boys in the next Winter Olympics.
As for me... I am proud, yes of course disappointed, but truly proud of them and what they were able to accomplish, for no other reason than I AM CANADIAN !

Almost all the medals are earned by the athlets..but unfortunately not all. I was talking about unfair judgement in the US (during Olimpoics in Salt Lake City). Even on the UK TV this year commentators said about it, while giving a short description to every olympics that took place before. Unfortunately in these Olympics there also was unfair judgement..not only towards Russians by the way...
I think that all the sportsmen if they take part in Olympics are already the best in their country and none of them is unprofessional (there are some exceptions, but mostly they all are good)..I m not trying to say that russians are the best, and there is noone better...I think you misinterperet my words sometimes....
Overall, I dont like Olympic games, they smell a little bit...but I watch cause I like to be into the events that are happening in the world...

There is no team in the World who plays constantly well. We had some injuries and just had a bad day...you cant compare that performance to one against Canada, or Sweden. Yea, its not a bad result. There are so many great hockey teams that the fortunes of one team can change after one game. As you well know previous to 1998 the USA and Canada were not allowed to play the best athletes their countires had to offer which is what all of the other participating countries were allowed to do... Why ? Because here our best play in the NHL, we shouldn't be penalized because we have an organized sport in which these athletes are allowed the luxury to make a living doing something they are very obvioulsy gifted in. The Europeans do in fact use their players from THEIR professional leagues to play in and they always have. But because the NHL is considered the "big leagues" out players were not allowed to participate. But they are all professionals in their home countries.

I am terriblely afraid that I am going to have to ahead and agree with Miss S. :1avs: on this . .. as it is in fact the truth, this also occured with Basketball as well, in fact not only have countries take their pro's from their leagues but in the past they have take a whole proffesional team such as Argentinia and the Russians have done.

The closing ceremonies, completed....the athletes have come home. The barrage of fans, supporters and pictures seemingly over and a lingering pride at an unpresidented 25 medals..... and yet the twinge of TEAM CANADA making a shockingly early exit from the Olympics is what people are still talking about. It seems as though our second favourite pastime next to hockey is bashing hockey. Cetainly there has been some outrage, but fans need to recognize that other countries are catching up. But rest assured as far as I know there in fact has been no call for a federal inquiry into the perils of teaching 8 year olds the left wing lock. So Canadians don't mourn the state of our hockey..... we will be just fine.

Well considering you guys have won the last couple of world junior titles I believe you have a great crop of youngsters that will uphold the tradition of Canadian Hockey, I would say that the Fin's and Swede's just had a better stretch of games this year and team Canadia went into a funk at the wrong time . .

Um, did I insinuate our tradition of Canadian Hockey was in jeopardy ? Easy there killer.....although I appreciate your support, let's not get carried away. Why ? ..... because " We ARE Hockey !" ....lol

Well one might think that Canadia's early exit . . which by the way was right around the same time the AMERICAN's got knocked out the tournament . . but it is in fact true that "YOU ARE HOCKEY!" and yes your tradition is not in question I was just trying to be canadian again and show some support to the home team.
