The draw just ended and I havn't seen a topic about it.

The hardest match in the quarter finals I love the fact that we play first as away. Time to kick some french ass after humiliating germans, and turkies.
Lyon are good very good but we are milan. Maldini is returning when we face them I am certain. so our defence will kick ass again. Sheva,Pippo, And Kaka are at top form.

Home :: Lyon-1- :devf: -2-Milan
Away :: Milan-3- :devf: -1-Lyon

So here we come Barca
Here We Come Champions Leauge

...and when we have beaten Lyon in the quarter finals we will face either Benfica or Barcelona in the semifinals.

Which means there are good chances for an all italian Champions League final with Milan playing either Inter or Juventus. :5schal:

Of all the three recent seasons we have been playing the C.L well, this is the toughest draw yet in the latter stages of the competition. forget PSV's tough stand last season, Lyon is a tough well gelled team. Winning a Le Championnat 4 times in a row, is not an easy feat, regardless of how you think the French League is a below par league.
Lyon is a very good team and they will take us to the wire. However, I believe we will beat them, and our experience will be the difference.

I see us meeting Juve in the final again.

Lyon will be tough to get past, we have to be watchful of Carew who has had a new lease of life there. Plus we all know about Revelliere, Cris, Cacapa, Juninho, Diarra, even Tiago and Malouda to an extent. We shouldn't be assuming of an automatic route through, although if we play to our strengths and play as well as we did in the home leg against Bayern we'll be in a strong position to progress.

Plus it'll give us a good chance to talk shop about their players, Juninho, Diarra and Revelliere :D

Worthless draw for us. Having the two teams I would rate as the thoughest after each other. I would have love meeting Arsenal or Juve, those are teams we would beat. Now instead we got a French team, which was seems to have problems with and Barcelona which not only is great, they seems to have matured.

IMO, if we get past these matches the final will be the easy game.

Juve in comparison got tailormade teams for them. Inter with the loser attitude and Arsenal that never ever reached a semi-final. Damn!

Tough draw!!!!

I hoped that we would face Barca first then Lyon, because we are in great shape, and i just hope that does not wear away soon..

Ive been searching everywhere looking for who will play home at the first leg.. im not too sure its Lyon.. it doesnt mention anything anywhere.. if anyone knows, let them please tell us, but it is a good thing that we play the 2nd leg at home..

The draw says Lyon vs Milan, so maybe it means the first leg will be at Lyon, and 2nd at Milan? Im not sure. But a big blow is that the semi-final will be at Milan in the first leg and second leg at Barca, that my friends will be very very crucial.

Very tough draw indeed and we know that Milan underestimates the little teams like Lyon, PSV we always have problems with these teams that's why i think this is a very tough draw.
Last year PSV could've beaten us and Lyon is a better team thean the PSV's of last year and i'm not being pessimistic but Lyon is a very tricky side.

If we win we'll play Barca i liked a Milan-Barca final but i would be satisfied with Inter to payback them for the loss this season

Now that really sucks
Bayern is my 3rd favorite team and Lyon is 4th. I wanted some one like Arsenal or Barca at this stage. Really disappointed again.
Ok now we have lyon. I think we shall win eaisly, because Sheva & Kaka are unstopable at the moment. Plus no Juninho so things are good.
I also want to say to u guys that calm down, Even if we face Barca in the semies, nothing to worry, we shall beat them eaisly 3-0

I dont think that we are luckier than juve...cause i really doubt that juve will win against Arsenal on the first place...Arsenal is a difficult team and they play very fast football...in comparison to english football, Italian is very slow. So "good luck" to Juve..I dont think they gonna make it to the next round...

Milan totally dominated a team that plays typical English football for the whole 180 minutes and won both matches, home and away last year, against Man United. I am also sure that Juve have the capability to beat this Arsenal side because this side might not even qualify to champs league next year, in the English premiership! Juve dominated for most periods against Liverpool as well last year, and Milan dominated the final for 123 minutes. The remaining 7 minutes were Liverpool's were they did everything.

If anything, italian teams are favoured in English league style vs Italian league style, IF justice is served.. anyway, lets stop talking about Juve cuz we shouldnt care about them..we must concentrate on Lyon..and after Lyon (if we beat them), we have an extremely tough game against Barca.. I pray that Benfica beat Barca..I'll also wish Ronaldinho to miss the 2nd leg at Nou Camp, if he's not there, im 100% positive we're fine.

I didnt say they dont have a chance to win...I think that english way of playing football is difficult for italians...Arsenal is not the most comfortable team for Juve...MU were very bad previous season...

Frankly I am confident that if we keep up our current form (disregard Juventus) we should defeat Lyon and then Barca. Both have shown recently that they are not unbeatable in their domestic leagues, as was feared earlier in the season. I am slightly afraid of Lyon, but as someone said (sorry, can't remember who) Lyon should be the team that fears up, not the opposite. After all we are MILAN. So quit with all the negativity about how Lyon is so amazing and unbeatable, I expect nothing more than a victory.

I think a typically English team would be difficult for Juve, as you've said their record against Utd in recent years has been poor, and they went out to Liverpool last year.
However Arsenal arent a typical English team, in fact Juve have become one :D they have the typical 4-4-2, with a physical central midfield (Emerson, Vieira) , flying wingers (Camoranesi, Zambrotta), the big striker/tricky striker combo, they value efficient victory over flair. I said at the start of the season they are like a 70's Liverpool side and i stand by that description.

If you look at Arsenal's losses domestically it shows that they are good when given time to play (like Real did) but very bad when they are forced to compete in midfield. Juve will force them to compete, and their only chance of winning is if Gilberto puts in 2 massive performances to dominate Vieira and Emerson, giving a platform for Fabregas, Hleb, Ljungberg, Pires and co to create....

I just read that Juninho Pernambuco said Lyon will beat Milan by "stopping" Kaka from his role as playmaker. He said that Kaka representing 80% of Milan...What a BIG BULL****!!!!
Juninho doesn't really know how Milan play their game and just saying crappy statement....He doesn't even know who is Milan's playmaker....;)

If a team has to be kicked out from the quarter final then it must be Lyon and not Milan !!!!
We have the spirit and history as Champions but not Lyon !!! They may have been the champions in their local lague but NOT in Champions League like we have done for 6 times and the 7th will be coming... :5ok:

I really dont care who will be in the final with Milan in the summer. Becouse we CANT loose another final,no way. Barca scares me most, and the fact we are playing 2nd leg away. But, we can do it somehow. Lyon cant do much against well organized defence without Juninho in their game. YOu'll see it when they face Milan. We only need a draw in Lyon and then...we'll you all know what is the feeling in the SAn Siro for the away teams in the CL.

Juninho's statement shows how much he rates Kaka, there's nothing else to understand.

Now as you said : "If a team has to be kicked out from the quarter final then it must be Lyon". You're certainly right mate, specially if you plan a trip to the Camp Nou in the forthcoming weeks. However if I were you I wouldn't put too much money on Milan to go through.

Dont worry. In 99% of such cases when players of an opposite team say such things towards another team, they lose. The reason is - underestimation of an opponent. Let them think that if they stop Kaka Milan will not be able to play. And they simply will lose...Actually a lot of people think that if Kaka doesnt play Milan cannot show good performance. Stupid opinion, dont actually understand where it comes from....

very hard game and am happy about that cuz that will proove to the world that milan is the best team alive not barca, juve, lyon or chelsea.

duno why but 4-3-3 is very usfel vs italians which is a disadvantage
example:-
Milan VS PSV
Inter VS Ajax
Milan VS Barca (dont deny it that played on us like training)
Juve VS Werderbremen
Udnise VS Barca

the only way these teams were defeted by single talent sheva, kaka, adriano and nedved.

so we need spaces for sheva, kaka, and serginho.
i see a win on both grounds but a very hard win with a bit of luck. am not saying that they won't score.
another disadvantge kaladze, nesta, gatuso, and stam comit near fouls and they have juninho and he is very dang. in free kicks in 35m and after.

another wiltord moves in the serginho, seedorf zone which is the attack is very high so he can move more freely in counter attacks and carew is taller than nesta and kaladze.

we need to grasp those points to win the 2 games.

I rate Lyon very, very highly ... actually I think they are a more dangerous opponent than both Barca and Juve but I have this feeling that it would be a far easier game for us than anyone thinks. Some gut feeling tells me that Lyon will crush under the pressure of high expectations and we will have an easier than expected ride in this CL round.

Some gut feeling tells me that Lyon will crush under the pressure of high expectations and we will have an easier than expected ride in this CL round. Perhaps, but you should know that expectations in Lyon are not as big as they were last year or the season before. There are no "we are the better team" announcements any more. They play without the imperative of qualifying in the semis this time and with the quality they have, it makes them twice as dangerous.

The one clear thing is : Lyon players are aware of their quality but they still know that they have to prove themselves to the world at the highest level ( CL 1/4 , 1/2 and finals). This Milan generation has done it few times, and the motivation is certanly higher in France than in Milan.
That's why, i think that the tactics we used in Munich are the best way to get out of France with a good result. Lets drop the creativity for the first match. Lets use 2 fighters in midfield ( Gattuso with Ambro/Vogel) and lets try to slow the game. If i remember correctly, that's exactly what Mourinho did with Porto in Lyon 2 years ago, and it worked.
Yes, playing bravely and attacking in Lyon may bring us the result, but there is a huge possibility that if we play like that, we'll have the same destiny as another team who tried to do that in Lyon ----Real Madrid !
If we play defensively in first half and keep a clean sheet, it will make Lyon nervous, and Milan are the masters of playing against such teams.

MiLaNiSt
22-03-2006, 16:32
No matter how strong Lyon is we will handle them very well and sme will be suprised how good! Milan are masters when they play strong teams. They suffer more with smaller teams inseatd with teams like Lyon or Bayern.

I'm sure Anceloti will use the same tactic as the first game in Bayern: only possesin of the ball and counter attack meanwhile at San Siro the game plan is always offensive!

In this game i see a tie or maybe a win for Lyon by 1 goal but at San Siro, Lyon will be shocked!

Im sorry but...I dont see any reason why it could be an easy game. Lyon plays brilliantly at home. Juninho is not playing, and that is great for us, im sure we can draw or even win it if we play tight in the middle and slow down the tempo. We can even win it if Pirlo and Seedorf play 100% well. But to beat them by 2 goals in away game....im not sure about that. Lets hope noone gets injured against Fiuorentina and than release Pippo&sheva&kaka' on them!

Personally, I think the Lyon match is going to be even tougher that the Barsa one. Lyon displays an amazing atacking football and have proved to be capable of beating any European team both, home and away. Barcelona plays the best football at the moment but that doesn't necessarily make them champions. Avanti Milan!

What gets my is Lyon hammered PSV last round and we struggled against PSV in the group stages not winning in both games i know Vieri started one leg but still, Lyon we be a very difficult opponent to get past but with Shevchenko on form and Nesta and Kaladze tight at the back am quietly confident but it will have to be our best performance up to now in the champions league if we are to advance to a even harder task.

Lyon beat PSV with 0-1 in Holland but that was due to an absolute howler from Gomes. Then in the retun leg, at 1-0, PSV lost their best player - Cocu - after a red card and played most of that game with 10 men.
This being said, every game is unique by itself and if you start comparing who beat who, you will come to the conclusion that football results just don't make sense if put together for comparison reasons. You will see what I mean in the newxt two games we have in the CL ;)

Lyon is much stronger side than Bayern ,you will see it on wednesday. I've been followinh them all season, and their midfield is REALLY STRONG. Juninho is out, so the most interesting duel will be Diarra-Kaka'. and Cris-Sheva ( aldough I dont see Cris stopping our captain! :) ) We just need to stay focused and move a lot. i shouldnt read too much into that mate, its to be expected. its fairly common for teams to underperform in the game immediately before or after a CL match as they are focussed on the big fixture midweek and take it easy to avoid getting injured. it wouldnt surprise me to find Houllier rested a few players.

They'll be ready for us and it will be a tough match, but we'll come through victorious ;)

-Juninho is out which makes it easier for us.
-I say sheva should switch with kaka during the game on the left making confusion to the defnders making serginho freely attacking and crossing to pippo.
-using gatuso and ambro is more usfel in the home match to defend.

Something which we did aginst Fiorentina, and that is switching places Seedorf-Gattuso, neds to be done in here too. Gattuso can cover Serginho, and sedorf in front of Stam who s great defensively. Sheva-kaka-pippo will rotate, im sure. Or maybe even Gila for Pippo. Maldini cant play for full match yet, let Kaladze do his job.

SBS broadcasts Inter-Villarreal (if somebody understands this choice, please explain me).... anyway, I searched for a stream on the internet and I found out that Star Sports will broadcast Lyon-Milan. Here are some links for people who are in the same situation like me...

Star Sports PPLive (synacast://09jN1+TK3K3nodua0aLQoKySoqGenqOZ1KGelq+Zp6eZmtzH1aPQmqvL0aLS5pzI2dSpnayZltvbpuvJ4OSmmKWYntedzaTT1eSm oaaVoKvhzebZqp+bmaTModSa19vZqqicmaag5dTc3bCUn6Ga0KfJnt7R3bCdoKCcpOrI4OSmmKXR2dOel+ne3tHPyunZntPb1rCd oJbayuPKrcPgyui44N/e3emfoqChm7G45NHevObU4uTfo6eVo6OS1eXMrefj4KiT4ODY0uzKntPb1rCdoKCco66VoKCS3d7K3dWp0evY5OPUyujK7Q==)

FORZA MILAN!!!!

Thanx a lot, its not on tv here in the US either, stupid ESPN thinks that Inter-Villareal is a better match to show. I watched the Fiorentina match thanks to the link you gave me, it was great quality. Ditchin school Wednesday to watch this
Thanx again

Telelatino will also have the game but I dont think you will be able to view it.

Guys, it is so vital to start pippo ahead of Gila in this game. I really hope Carlo does that. What I fear most is Seedorf and Kaka not showing up at the game because they played the full game at Fiorentina. These r 2 players that get affected when playing alot of games after each other.

I dont think that we will have our captain back. Serginho, Kaladze, Nesta, Stam is the ideal lineup to have for now. But wait, what ever happened to Cafu? He is also a huge weapon we used to have that has been away for a long time. I hope Gattuso is fired up for this game, but not too fired up to commit a stupid foul.

Pirlo has been so inconsistent unfortunately this year, but im hopeful that he will up his game for Lyon. I really hope he's in top form for this game, because there will not be many players in their lineup that will be trying to close down Pirlo. They will not have any attacking midfielders. Diarra will be busy with Kaka. Pirlo will have alot of space I feel, especially as we are the away team. I hope he can make use of that and give many pinpoint passes to Pippo and Sheva.

Im hopeful for this game, but I have a feeling that we will give them a silly goal towards the end of the game because of lack of concentration. Dida made a few blunders already, I hope he will be up to the task for this game.

I also have a question. If Milan and Inter both reach the final, can they both make an appeal to have the final be played at San Siro? Someone told me that they once did that in UEFA but they did not both reach the final.

I hope our travelling Milan fans keep shouting Rossoneri Siamo Noi all game. They can help us.

for those in canada, TSN is ahowing the game LIVE, Telelatino (TLN) is showing it but on tape delay - for some mysterious reason most TV channels seem to prefer the Inter-Villarreal game. I hope it's just poor judgement on their side and has nothing to do with one of Inter or Villarreal being potential oponent for Arsenal, now that would be just plain sick.

Stam,Cafu and Ambrosini are out. Now, the question is - Simic or Billy? Billy has played great recently. but can he handle it? Does he have enough power? and if we are to play Billy, then there is definatly no place for gattuso on the right side. lineup will be........dida-billy?-nesta-kaladze-serginho-pirlo-seedorf-gattuso-kaka'-shevchenko-pippo. I dont know will Carlo play Gila on wednesday.

On the other side, Revellier is back so Serginho will have to work harder. Juninho is out so I dont know who will be their "playmaker". We just need to stay tight in the middle and calm thingsd down, then, if we manage to control the tempo and the fighting spirit of Lyon, we will score eventually. But for sure, we need to score, even if we loose 2-1.

Surely Billy cant follow up a full 90 minutes with a start 4 days later. Its one thing for someone in his twenties, but at Billys age and having hardly featured all season????

27-03-2006, 22:35
hmm r u sure Stam is out? Carlo said that he has recovered for the Fiorentina game, but he will be rested to be prepared for the Lyon game. Even Maldini will be selected for the game but dont think he'll start. Why the hell is Ambro out again? As much as I admire him, Ive had it with him and Cafu getting injured everytime they get a scratch ffs.

zlatanov i think you are mistaken, because I saw yesterday an ad on TLN saying that they will have the Lyon-mIlan game, LIVE, at 1:30 Canada time. Arsenal-Juve will also be showed live on TLN the day before. I saw this on the Soccer Fanatics program, but i just checked on their website, and they have the Inter-Villareal game. Im not sure which one is right, but I think TSN and RDS(only in montreal) will have the game.

edit: sorry u were right.. stam is not selected for the squad

Here is the squad from acmilan.com

SQUAD FOR LYON
27/03/2006
GOALKEEPERS: Dida, Fiori, Kalac.

DEFENDERS: Costacurta, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Jankulovski, Simic.

MIDFIELDERS: Gattuso, Kakā, Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf, Serginho, Vogel.

STRIKERS: Amoroso, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Shevchenko.

Mm I think we should let go of Amoroso as he is not useful at all and bring in a striker from our youth team.

Dida

I haven't seen any official team news for Lyon, but i would imagine they would line up something like this:

--------------Carew-------------
--Malouda---------------Wiltord--
-Pedretti-----Diarra------Thiago--
-Abidal---Mueller--Cris---Reveillere
-------------Coupet-------------

Although you can include Govou, Fred as alternative attacking options and Clerc and Cacapa for alternative right-back/centre-back options respectively.

Don't assume that we will win this match, we have a poor record against French teams recently and although they only drew 1-1 with Toulouse, Lyon had 32 shots at goal ! 11 of those were by Juninho and Toulouse aren't the best side, but we can't afford any slack play or they will punish us.

Costacurta will be skinned alive if Malouda and Abidal have their game on, we can't risk that at all. Malouda is in terrific form right now and we have to watch him closely. They have alot more pace throughout their team than us, so we need to play smart and play sensibly, inviting them onto us will result in failure.

I don't know what we'll do tomorrow but Juve had it deep up their butts today - Arsenal only proved what a joke Juve is when the ref isn't helping them, 2-0 for Arsenal, and at 2-0 both Camo and Zebina got sent off, while Vieira got a YC and is suspended for next game. Throughout the whole game, Arsenal was a class above Juve in every department and 2-0 was the least Juve could get away with.
very good game by the whole Arsenal team but above all Reyes, Henry, Fabregas, Toure, and especially Eboue (Arsenal's newly discovered RB) ... here is a new name for Braida and Co to think of for the RB position.

Milan_Mad
28-03-2006, 15:48

What a game by Arsenal ( a club I actually dont like at all....), but im really pleased to see this happening. When refs are actually giving cards to Juve players they cant play their dirlt football, and it always ends like this. Bravo Arsenal. And did you see this Fabregas and Henry?? brilliant. Also, great game by Reyes - man of the match for me. RB also.

Now, about the club that actually has some class - Milan. I dont like the fact Billy will play as a RB, their wingers are really fast and simic can do better job in there. But they will see it all in dressing room.

Well not too long to go till the big game, am absolutely pumped for it. The fact that Juve got smashed by Arsenal has just increased it abit more, who knows if they slip up with a draw this week, its only 6 pts.

Anyway back to the important game, no doubt its gonna be a tough first leg. The best news of all I will get to watch it live, do rate my mate for having ESPN.

If we have solid night in defence, i would definitely expect us to go home with a victory or draw at absolute worst. Definitely is a concern that Lyon had 32 shots at goal over the weekend, with the form Dida is in this season that could account to 33-0 haha. Anyone share this opinion.

I agree the game will probably come down to probably only 2 or 3 key moments, with my prediction being to look out for something special from either Sheva or Kaka' (who else really...). It is also great to see Andrea Pirlo starting to hit form again, he may just be the key in this one with a clinical over the top ball.

For me if we play tactically like we would at home and are strong in defense i think 0-2 or 1-2. I really think Sheva is going to have a big night, he is due for one of those, and does love the big occasion.

Well for me, it will be...

LYON 0-2 MILAN (Sheva & Kaka') :r14:

Sheva has had 3 very good chances to score but NADA so far - Coupet (sp?) has been excellent so far today. Lyon had their period of possession but the only real chance they got to was a bit of a lucky one as Dida had to save the ball with his fingertips after a free kick by Pedretti missed everyone and flew right towards the goal.
Good first half for Milan and we are the team that could have taken the lead on a sevreal occasions. Not very impressive game by Cris, I think. Malouda and Diarra are playing very well though.

Goalless at halftime but we should have been at least 2 goals up with our possession and dominance. Coupet blocked a shot from Sheva early in the game with a great reaction save using his leg and from then on it was one-way traffic. Coupet again reacted well to stop a shot from Sheva with his leg from pointblank range after some great wingplay from the left by Serginho, and just before halftime Sheva was again denied a goal by Coupet, this time with his hand, after Lo Tzar went through on goal after leaving Cris for dead.

Lyon looked disorganised in midfield and were clearly missing the organisation, creativity and setpiece deliveries of Juninho Pernambucano. If we play like we did in the first half, we should get our much needed away goal :hopefull:

Sidenote: An oldboy gave our cugini an early scare :D when Jose Mari latched on a though pass by Riquelme, fired a shot at the Inter goal, the shot was saved but Forlan tapped home the rebound to give Villareal the lead with only a minute gone

Kaladze was aerially very strong today, but he made a few careless mistakes in passing that could potentially have killed us.

Actually I think Kaladze was the strongest defender for Milan today. Nesta's passing was very bad today and he looked a bit shaky...

I was disappointed by our 2nd half, but 0-0 isn't too bad even though Shevchenko had a couple of chances he normally scores on.

All in all, I am not mad at Milan...this was a tight game, played by two obviously well matched teams.

I think the San Siro may serve as our 13th man, the fans our 12th man, combining to overwhelm Lyon...plus, Sheva and company will create more chances, but will score at home I think.

We must be careful not to concede too many fouls just in front of the box, which could mean us playing deeper in defense, sort of forcing them to come at us, which I am sure they will try to do. This though, may play into our hands, and result in us counter-attacking, something we can be deadly at.

I was dismayed to see how we started to wilt in the latter stages, in light of my condfidence in our claim in being a second half team, which suggests that Lyon may be a more fit side at this point in the season...something else to worry me.

Despite these misgivings, the 0-0 tie was a good result, one that we can take confidence from for the second leg, and this time, Sheva will convert those chances.

I believe.

HOLY shiiiiiit guys they totally outplayed us. The first 25 minutes was all us and Sheva had 2 cut clear chances to score but the goalie saved amazingly. Then after that, it was alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Lyon with the possession. They didnt cause any threat except that fluke of a free kick, it was supposed to be a cross but it bounced and was going into the goal, but dida performed an amazing one-handed save to push it out..

our defence was unbelievably good today.. very very very solid.. gattuso played an amazing first half, he disappeared in the 2nd.. Seedorf was invisibile throughout the game, he didnt do his good stuff, IMO this is because he played a full game vs Fiorentina, the same goes with Kaka and Pirlo. Kaladze played well but made 2 VERY bad mistakes which could have easily cost us the game.

I love Gila guys, but im sorry, this guy is too young and should not be played in big games like these when we have players like Pippo with the form he's in.. He is too inexperienced and only touched the ball once on his time on the pitch and he gave it away.. he really pissed me off.. its not like pippo did anything, but he got called offside 3 times and you can see him working alot and getting involved in the play.. Gila should start in games in Serie A now, not games like these!

a 0-0 is a good result given how the game was flowing, but in general, it is a realy bad result because if they score 1 goal, we must win the game because any score draw will eliminate us.. the way they played also worries me alot, we were totally outplayed and they had all the possession, but thank god their shooting is absolutely terrible! they had 20+ shots, only 5 on target, and none of which was as dangerous as any of Sheva's 4 shots on goal.

and btw, Cris is not good enough for Milan from the performance he put in today, but Diarra impressed me alot. Im very worried about the next game, i really really hope that Carlo does rest all the players for the next game.

Man of the match: Diarra - Coupet - Sheva

devoted_dm
29-03-2006, 16:05
They didn't outplay us, they got a high number of shots because they couldn't break down our defence, forcing them to shoot from distance. This game reminded me of our games against PSV last season. There's something about these "smaller" sides, they really give their all against us. The home leg is a must-win, and it's going to be difficult, but I hope we can do it.

Pirlo was poor tonight as was gilardino, inzaghi should start now in the 2nd leg, my man of the match tonight was Gattuso he was everywhere on the pitch i also give credit to Nesta, Serginho and Dida who looked his old self. Gutted that Shevchenko did not put away one of his 3 chances as that would of been the perfect score 0-1: we now have to win Lyon in our own backyard. It will be very tough be am hopeful that we can do that.

Jim_UK
29-03-2006, 16:10
I would hardly call Lyon a 'Smaller' side. This is a bit of a wake up call to all those people who said we'd waltz past them. The two teams are very evenly balanced, both made mistakes in delivering final balls, both gave the ball away alot ... we had the chances but didn't take them.

We need to start the next game exactly the same but this time make sure we take 1 or 2 of the chances.

It'll be tough, very tough, but i think we can do it.

We where brilliant in the 1st 30 minutes than nothing. Although Lyon had more shots on goal, our chances where much more clear and Sheva missed 2 'easy' chances for him.
Our defence made some mistakes when launching an attack. but on the whole Nesta and Kaladze did well.
If we will not pass, I will blame today 1st half for not finishing the great chances we had. Today's 0-0 is a tricky result

This result is ok, too bad we didnt score. Now we need to be really carefull and not make ANY mistakes at home. San Siro gives us another 20% of power, we can beat Lyon for sure. Once again Diarra showed how great he is, and Cris showed he has no place in Milan. Nesta,Maldini,Kaladze are all better than him. Seedorf did very good today, he gave his all. Gattuso was great. Pirlo still out of form, as usual. Aldough he had some great long passes, switching sides.

It was a tough match today against a very very good team. I am a little disspointed we didnt get an away goal. Now we have have to win the return leg, I dont think a 0-0 draw is likely again.

On the other hand, I was very impressed by Diara. Cris was good, but Im still not sure he is good enough. But one defender I was really impressed by was Abidal. He was too strong for Kaka and Sheva all game. He would be a great addition.

Very tricky result indeed we'll have to be more carefull at San Siro, we mustn't receive a goal and we have to score one and that will leave space for counter attacks and Malouda and Wiltord are really fast and dangerous but i have confidence in Milan playing home so we should tear them apart like Bayern.

I'm dissapointed Sheva didn't score a goal from the 2 chances he had, but that's football sometimes you have luck sometimes you don't.

Nesta, Kaladze and Gattuso were amazing with their defensive tasks even though Kaladze made 2 mistakes which could have cost us the game but luckily everthing went fine, also Seedorf, Sheva and Kaka were great but Gila was invisible, Inzaghi should have started this game and i agree with hitmannq8 that Gila should play in Seria A and Inzaghi should play the big matches in CL

i havent read the views here but personally im very angry at the performance of the players, ancelotti was excellent though, he made the exact subs i was thinking of... but lyon really overran us after 20 mins... it was pretty even in terms of chances, ours were even better ones, but i almost lost my hair because we easily gave away the ball... at one point, the ball couldnt stay with us longer than 5 seconds, and the players movement!! oh my god, im not saying everyone, but when we actually have the chance to cool down the tempo of the game, no one is opening up to receive a pass, while lyon players were pressuring from attack, even dida was pissed off at this, u can tell from his reactions before a goal kick or anything similar, and as for the finishing im pretty dissapointed with sheva today, his movements were good, but all his shots were straight at coupet, and they werent fierce enough to atleast cause a rebound maybe, and in general i think as of late despite the fact that hes scoring, he doesnt look as sharp as usual, just hope he regains his top form, this is were we need him the most.

player evaluation:

dida - 8: he performed a nice save, and his positioning on tricky shots that take a bounce and are low were very good, but what i liked most was his reactions when the ball is out of play, he really seemed to want to win.

Costacurta - 6.5: i thought this is when we needed cafu the most, maybe stam even better, because of late stam has been superb offensivly and defensivly, but i cant blame billy that he doesnt go forward and produce crosses because its not him and his age doesnt help, he did well defensivly but i hoped that hed shout at the other players more often.

- Nesta - 7: defensivly, excellent! ... but when we needed to cool things down, he kicks the ball reclessly forward hoping that the attack would do something with it.

- Kaladze - 7.5: also great defensivly, great timing on tackles, and unlike nesta he passed forward more acuratly and at the right time.

- Serginho - 7: great positioning today from him, i reckon carlo asked him not to go forward as much but when he did he produced good crosses that i think forwards messed up.

- Pirlo - 6.5: nothing special, but cant really blame him since lyon completly shut him down today, defensivly on some occasions i hoped hed be more aggresive but not bad in general, vogel had to come in IMO.

- Gattuso - 7: very good defensivly, made up for the space pirlo left, and he really wanted to win the game, he also didnt get sent off :D!!

- Seedorf - 7.5: without him i doubt we would have handled lyons firepower, held the ball really well and when serginho went forward he was always ready to cover up for him.

- Kaka - 6.5: i feel bad for him because diarra was super today and gave him no chance, he tried hard to do something but on one occasion his shot was weak, on another the pitch messed up a good run for him that could have been a goal, just an unlucky day for him despite the determination.

- Shevchenko - 6.5: like i said, good movement from him, but im not used to see sheva finish like that, on form he would have burried the chances he got!

- Gilardino - 3: out of sorts, throughout the game i was saying egoistka has a point (though i dont think he should be hanged), but he was too nervous, didnt gel in with the team attacks, he did nothing right today, he didnt even pressure the defenders, which was the least he could do IMO, i just hope he scores a goal in the CL and breaks free, he really drove me nuts today!

subs:
Inzaghi - 6.5: he had the determination to do something, but didnt have anything to do really.

Maldini - 6.5: his presence calmed the team i felt, but he seemed to far away from any of the action, cant blame him though, just back from and injury and playing in a new position... WB capitano!

Vogel - 6.5: we needed him instead of pirlo, i thought he shouldve come on a bit earlier, but nothing to do aswell.

conclusion, not a bad result, hats off to lyon, our performance indivisually wasnt bad, just that we missed the ferocity and aggressivness that lyon had, which is ironic because i felt lyon were playing very similar to the way we used to 2 years ago, killing off any chances for us to do anything.

Lyon players that caught my attention the most:
- Diarra
- Wiltord

they all played great, but i hope we get those 2 players and if alex isnt available i dont mind cris

Gialrdino 3..hahaha! good one :) he didnt do much, and he looks unconfortable in there. He needs some speed and power, and some determination also. Lets prepare pippo and stam for San Siro match. And one more thing, before the game I said we need to play sedorf on the right and gattuso on the left, but as Costacurta was playing, we needed Gattuso to help him out with Malouda. Good job done in there.
Conclusion - We are Milan and in the San Siro we simply need to go 120% fired upo and score some goals, thats all .)

:guw:

Oh, anyway, pretty happy with the way we contained Lyon - let's be honest, we are an Italian team aka a tactically shrude team and we can expect to see Milan playing the whole away game as we did in the first 30 min or so. Must say that we were very unlucky, or I think a better word is inaccurate, in front of goal and missed chances that should have been scored ... just hope that we don't come back to this game and say something like "if we scored at least one of those ..."
As I said, I am content by the way we held Lyon seemingly in control of the ball but not of the game, but I can't say I am crazy about the result as a 0-0 is a double edged knife with that away goals rule. Obviously we have to be very careful at the San Siro and, apart from the crowd, I'd say Lyon will have a slight advantage as all they need is a scoring draw to go through and when two very good team play, that's often what the outcome is.
Pretty disappointed with Cris' perfomance. Not that he was that awful or anything but I really expected much more from him and he looked a bit scared whenever he faced Kaka or Sheva. Excellent game by Diarra and Abidal, and a very good one for Malouda. these three players, especially the first two, deserve extra attention and effort by Milan. Wiltord also had a pretty good game, too bad he is over 30 now (32-33 I think ?)

solid defence form nesta and kalazhe and good goal winning form gattu.Sheva had done very well. Kaka and gila were outplayed by the lyon defence.

Now milan cant afford to conceed a single goal in San Siro becox if there were they will have to score more more.Only a win at san siro and not even a draw.Lyon show how good they are even without juninho...

30-03-2006, 02:16
I don't know if some of you noticed, but even though our defence was superb and very composed throughout the match, had Lyon had Juninho in their squad, they could have easily beaten us 1-0 or 2-0 and done a Bayern/[insert any team that's won or drawn us just by scoring long range goals] on us. I'm not being overly critical of the team. They did well today, even against a Lyon without Juninho; barring abit of complacency and fatigue shown. I'm just pointing out a fact that our midfield are just a yard off the pace(most of the time) in closing down long range attempts and sometimes think the defence and Dida are invincible(though sometimes they really are :) )

iregk

The whole team looked tired and a yard off the pace. The midfield wasn't in the game at all and I have to say the worst player on the pitch was Gillardinho. Nothing he did or tried came off.

the only player who looked anyway good for me was Sheva and even at that he looked as though he wasn't overly interested. What was strange was seeing in the last 15mins as if both teams settled for a 0-0. Even Lyon looked to have given up when and I have to be honest and blunt here, we were there for the taking!!!

@hitmannq8 : i don't agree they outplayed us, they put us in troubles in the second half but at the end WHO HAD THE BEST CHANCES? all in all a fair result

agree with Warren --> Obviously the return leg in San Siro will be a different game, our stadium is big and scary, they won't be used to it. I saw a frail psychological approach in the first 20 minutes, as they were scared. In San Siro this will be even more evident. I will give my contribution, of course, with all my energies.

But that will be a thriller, prepare yourself to a night of emotions

why i'm positive for the return leg:

1) we play at home, in front of the magnificent crowd of san siro which can be scary, esp for young players like Lyon's

2) we avoided our biggest danger: release the tension for the return leg. We are still on the edge , so we'll prepare the game at our best.

3)Pippo is warming up. although i'm a big fan of Gila, i think Alberto may suffer the pressure of such a big game, while Pippo is already preparing his killer weapons

4) Tiago misses next match. Dangerous player out.

WORRIES

1) Juninho's freekick, but Dida seems confident like in the past.

2) Lyon can draw with goals and get through (but this is also positive in some ways, we'll be more concentrated than ever)

No doubt at your analysis Gio. It could be full of drama as in our QuarterFinal home leg versus Ajax back in 2003! That was a close one we just eked through by our very own Pippo.

This is what football is about...I dont know if I would want it any other way, especially with the Deportive debacle in mind...scoring a plethora of goals in the first leg is no guarantee of winning the tie overall.

I am much more confident in Milan at home, and we seem to play our best there...what I am glad for is that we wont have to go to Highbury to play on Arsenalīs scrimmage pitch...:D..since we wont meet them until the final, if the manage to overcome Juve and Inter...

Milan have shown that they are capable of taking the game to Lyon, and were a few feet from scoring a cruical away goal. Only fatigue allowed Lyon back into the game in the second half.

We can, and will beat these guys.

I believe.

From: Channel4.com/footballitalia.com:

Houllier hails Rossoneri

Lyon Coach Gerard Houllier was impressed with Milan's performance at the Stade Gerland, so much that the French side was in awe for the opening 20 minutes.

"It was a game of two halves, as Milan had the best chances in the first half and we had the better of the second," he said after their 0-0 draw in France.

"Two things happened: We managed to up the tempo of the game and stopped watching Milan, as we gave them too much respect and sat back. Once we started playing, it emerged that we are very alike, although perhaps they are better offensively."

Although Lyon had a lot of possession in the second period, they failed to really trouble Dida apart from a Benoit Pedretti free kick and dipping Tiago strike from distance.

"The Rossoneri proved a lot of their worth in the first half. They're always a threat when they get the ball. I don't think we were threatening enough in terms of offensive play."

Brazilian star Juninho Pernambucano was suspended for the first leg, but will return for the decider at San Siro next week.

"He can score goals and create them, so he is definitely a great asset for us and we really missed him tonight," admitted the former Liverpool tactician.

Lyon remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season thanks to seven wins and two draws, but this is the first time they have failed to hit the back of the net, having scored 18 goals in the previous eight games.

Milan are also a very attacking side with 17 goals in the same period.

Now I dont think Houllier is as good a tactician as Carlo, all the more reason why I think we will learn from the first game, and use that knowledge to crush them in the devils den!

And let me head off any anti Gila sentiments early, with this juicy quote from Carlo that can be seen in the article here:

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar29l.html

“Gilardino is important as a presence in the area and to hold up the ball for the midfielders to come forward. It’s true he didn’t have any chances, but he worked for the team and gave his contribution,” insisted Ancelotti.

Thanks Carlo, for helping in the continuing education of our fans here at MM.

Wiltord is 32 in may. Im glad someone else noticed just how good a player Abidal is. I just saw on skysports.com that Lyon have received interest from 38 clubs :nasty: Maybe Galliani can sneak in and snatch Reveillere :D

So we'd be happy with Abidal (left-back), Reveillere (right-back), Diarra (midfield), Juninho (midfield) and possibly Malouda (winger) to chuck on and stretch teams ?? :D

you all know i'm one of the biggest Gila fans on MM. But i think next match Inzaghi should start. These are HIS nights, and i think Lyon's defenders will feel more pressure knowing Pippo is there like a snake in the darkness, ready to profit of the smallest mistake.

I agree Giovanni, this match is made for Pippo. Totally different to Sheva and for some reason defenders seem to forget about Pippo and leave him alone around the box.

I have a feeling we will be seeing him on the score sheet. He is a player for the big nights as he has proven in Europe countless times and he is after all lethal when close to goal.

Everyone seems to be very disappointed in Gila. We keep giving him chances in CL, I dont think he's worth it because he really cant handle the pressure. I'd rather see Pippo and Rui Costa sub in later, not Gila. He just doesnt have the correct mentality and aggressiveness in him just yet. We cannot take this risk and play him from the start guys, im sure most of u agree with me.

Gila will become a world-class striker in a year. He still hasn't shown us what he used to do at Parma unfortunately. I believe all his 16 goals in Serie A have been achieved when he is not on his best form, just imagine how much will score when he's in the sort of form he was in Parma!!! I dont want to guess, but i hope it'll be somestime soon..

Seems like we will be reverting to our old defence of Cafu Nesta Stam Maldini. Many ppl do not like Stam in CB for some reason. I also agree that Nesta - Maldini/Kaladze partnerships were more solid. But I also agree that Stam is a very important player that must start ahead of Kaladze. Serginho also has been so vital. Shiit guys, now I know how hard it must be for Carlo as a coach.

I agree Pippo was the right choice for the Lyon game, but everyone is being far too harsh on Gila. We are blinded by Pippo's recent hot form. Hes a great player, but players like him and Gila dont always shine in games and often seem quiet. If we think Pippo is flawless then we are just fooling ourselves. Pippo has had many quiet games for Milan too. If that wasnt the case people would have never prefered to see Tomasson partner Sheva when he was here. Crespo was quiet in many games for Milan, Van Nistelroy was quiet against Milan. If we want all out action from our strikers its not going to happen with Gila or Inzaghi. Gila didnt get a proper chance against Lyon, but did work hard for the team and does seem to hold the ball up well for Sheva to run onto.

Im not favouring either of the two strikers afterall Im a Milan fan and they both score for milan, but dont be surprised if the ball hits gila in the face, bounces in to the net and then he cant stop scoring. If we are to win the CL we need Sheva and whoever his partner is to play well. Then when one of them goes off we need the substitue striker to play just aswel when he comes on.

Having said all that, watching the first leg against Lyon screamed out for a front 3 of Kaka, Rui and Sheva, but that wont happen will it

In all this my friend, I agree 1000000%, but as long as Don Berlusconi controls our club, we will play with 2 out and out strikers...no matter what!
