Tue April 4th

Most probable line up:

Dida
Stam Nesta Maldini Serginho
Seedorf - Pirlo - Gattuso
Sheva - Pippo

We come from a 1-0 loss away to Lecce (with a 2nd string side) and Lyon come off a 1-0 away win to Rennes.

We have failed to win only twice all season at the San Siro, or Devil's Den, as many would call it.

Juninho will be back for them, but they will be missing Tiago, who scored their goal against Rennes.

I believe in a 4-1 thrashing, to meet Benfica in the Semi-final in a couple of weeks!

The tension is growing. We simply must perform. I don't think that we will lose but the thing I am scare of the most is a scoring draw. Lyon is a good enough team to achieve that at the San Siro and we have to beware of that. The best way I think is to start off the game cautiously. We need to prevent them from scoring before we try to do anything else on their half. In other words.....SAFETY FIRST! I don't even want to think about what I am going to feel if we concede first.
Now if we score, I have a feeling that Carlo will put Ambrosini in for one of the forwards, which is going to make me go insane untill the final wistle goes. We can not defend a one goal lead. Lyon is good enough to penetrate a closed up team and we can not afford that mistake. If we are in the lead we need to keep the ball and not play kick ball.
I am really excited for this one and it will be really hard as Lyon in my eyes is the hardest team to beat in Europe. And yes...that includes, Barca, Inter, Juve, Arsenal, Chelsea......and so on. Their team is a perfect balance of skillfull players and physical presence. As form comes right now.....I think whoever wins this tie will lift the trophy come May. I think Barca has a great team but are not well balanced in the back and are weaker then both Lyon and Milan. I just pray that we beat the sh!t out of the French and show them that nobody even hopes to leave the San Siro happy!!!
Forza Milan!!!

It's just too early to speak of who will lift any trophies just yet - team perfomances will go up and down a couple of times till May.
I see your reasons for wanting us to be cautious but I hope Milan and Carlo will do exactly the opposite - go for the jagular from the first signal. I think it's better to risk it by pressing Lyon in their half and dominating them in the first 20 min or so, just like we did in Lyon and vs bayern at the SS, this time however we have to be more concentrated and don't let easy chances go to waste like we did in Lyon. true that we might be risking on their counters but I think it's better to risk getting an away goal in the early stages of the game rather later on when coach and team may very well NOT have enough time to react and turn the game around.
Should we score a goal or two in the first 15-20 min of pressing, the game will be downhill for us after that as we would be able to take them on counters - very much like we did with Bayern - and those would be deadly with rested Sheva and Kaka in the ranks.
It will be a tough game but after all, they all are.
Forza Milaaaaaan!!!!!!!

with rested Sheva and Kaka in the ranks i can definaltly see us scoring i just hope that it's more than the opponent, Also serginho and stam have both had rests and will be really up for this one, i can see us going through just.

So Stam will play, we really need him. With Lyon being so physical, its really his kind of game.

Agreed completely, is it just me, or has he been playing a lot better since it was announced that he is leaving after this season?

hmm, other members here have noticed that.. honestly, i never thought Stam played bad, i always thought he was one of the best defenders in the world and still do.

If we can score in first 20mins I'm sure that we will destroy Lyon like Bayern...Lyon is a weaker team, Milan played better in Lyon rather than in Munich...

Lyon depends only on 1 guy Juninho same as Bayern on Ballack...but I'm confident that Milan will win, don't see what happened in Lecce, Milan is more agressive & combative in Champions League...

We sacrificed the formation with Lecce so rest many players and we should have won but Lyon is more important than Lecce so on Tuesday it won't be the same Milan and we will qualify

Lyon used all their players with Troyes and we have that advantage of more players being rested! Lyon has no experience in these kind of games no matter how strong they are and also they are not used to play in big stadiums so from the first minute they will be shocked!

If PSV did dominate them 90min by hitting the posts 3 times and missing goals with no goalie I think that Milan can beat Lyon by more than just 2 goals!

His performances always satisfied me, especially against Barca. But he has accepted this his last season at Milan and has nothing to lose so is playing without caution.

We come from a 1-0 loss away to Lecce (with a 2nd string side) and Lyon come off a 1-0 away win to Rennes.

they won 0-1 against Troyes, no Rennes :)

it will be a very difficult game because Lyon is very similar to FC Porto when they won CL.
they play together for several years and play attacking football
they lost Essien, but Tiago is also a very good player

but iīm beting that ACM will won the match and goes to semi final
iīm not worried about Lecceīs game... the mind is on tuesday game
seriously i,m very confident in a good result (2-0)

see ya :)

is Cafu going to play?
i think a fit Cafu can be our extra bonus for the rest of CL.

Im not sure Stam will play, Carlo was resting Costacurta against Lecce. But we would really need stam for this game. Specially for Lyon's free kicks and crosses. If Costacurta plays down the right, Gattuso will again need to help him out with Malouda. And if Stam plays, Rino can take care of Juninho. If MAldini is ready, let him play, we need this kind of a leader. He did have a bad game on saturday, but they will see it in Milanello.
Just spread the game like we did against Lyon in the fiorst 20min, moove a lot, let Pirlo plays his game, and we will score. We need quality crosses from Serginho and Stam ( ? ).
Maybe, if Stam is not ready, and we know Billy cant hold more that 60min, after the 60th minute, Cafu can come in.

K77SH C
03-04-2006, 11:31
I was really hoping Cafu would be back a little more in advance of this game, who knows if he is ready or not. I dont think its worth the risk, for me Stam has to start.

Dear Milanisti...

IMHO we will win the game against Lyon at San Siro due to this facts :

1. At Lyon 3 times Sheva's shots were denied by the super goalie of Lyon at that time, Coupet. Question is : Can Coupet repeat his top performance to deny either Kaka, Sheva or Pippo shots at San Siro?? No Way man... :v408: :v408: :v408: :v408: :v408: :v408: :v408:

2. From all Lyon's player when we played at Lyon Tiago is their BEST player...he will not even be at the bench due to suspension for one game.....Can Juninho play his solitaire game without Tiago who scored against Troyes last night?? :kap: :kap: :kap: :kap: :kap: :kap:

3. Remember that 70,000 Milanisti will make the San Siro stadium like A REAL RED HELL for the Lazy Lions...BURN THE LIONS WITH AT LEAST 4 RED DEVILS' GOALS !!!!!! :5chore: :5chore: :5chore: :5chore: :5chore: :5chore:

BOTTOM LINE..... Milan will go through the Semi Finals and my feeling said that we will play Benfica at the Smis and not Barca instead.....

Inter will go through as well and Juve will be kicked out by the Gunners at the Delle Alpi on Thursday.

So...2 Milan team wil go through against Benfica and Arsenal...and play the Derby Della Madonina part 2 in Paris to lift the CL Trophy.

ROCK BOTTOM LINE : Milan will Thrash Inter at the Final :5inter: :5inter: :5inter:

From ACMilan.com:

SQUAD TO FACE LYON
03/04/2006

GOALKEEPERS: Dida, Fiori, Kalac.

DEFENDERS: Cafu, Costacurta, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Jankulovski, Simic, Stam.

MIDFIELDERS: Ambrosini, Gattuso, Kakā, Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf, Serginho, Vogel.

STRIKERS: Amoroso, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Shevchenko.

Ancelotti: 'For the first time in quite awhile I can pick from a full squad and this is a positive sign. Stam is fine, not the best, but he's training and we'll see. Otherwise, Costacurta will play as he did in the first leg.'

I think that the most important news is that Stam is back...
He wasn't absent for a long time as Cafu or Maldini, so he supposed to be in good shape. Costacurta sucks, so lets hope Stam is fine. Everyone talked about reinvented Kaladze, well let me just say that in last games that Stam played he was great, make people to forget about Cafu.

It looks great to see Stam, Cafu and Maldini all back for a European game.

hitmannq8
03-04-2006, 22:28
Maldini played full 90 minutes, I dont think he'll start. Pirlo for some STRANGE reason started against Lecce and played 60 minutes. Kaka, Sheva, Gattuso was rested and Seedorf, Pippo came in as subs so they'll surely play IMO.

Costacurta was rested, but really, he should not start as we have both Stam and Cafu available. I think we should start with Stam because I dont think Cafu can do the job given that he's recently been back to injury. The central defence will continue with Kaladze and Nesta, and I think Carlo will bring in Maldini and play with 5 defenders to defend a one goal lead sometime near the end. Serginho also must start at the left as there is no one that can do the job better than him right now.

Up front I hope to see Sheva and Pippo. If Pippo is having a bad game (which is 5% of the time), we should put in Rui Costa, Vogel, Marek, anyone but NOT Gilardino. I dont think he has what it takes to change a game or take part in a European game just yet. If the game is 3-0, then Gila can come in and get a goal to boost his confidence.

Forza Milan, and I know we can beat this Lyon team, I just hope we make it through. This game is very dangerous, more than potential semi and final.

I wish the Milan fans dont stop singing. People who live around Milan are so lucky really, if i was there i would be sittin in the front row shouting my ass off and cheering them till the last minute.. I hope the rest of the fans at the San Siro will feel the same way I feel..

Just a bit over half a day till the game. MILAN PER SEMPRE!

I dsiasgree with the "NOT" gilardino. What's a better time for him to prevail than in a quarter final? Yes, you are right in the sense that he may not be ready for the big stage yet, but he'll never be ready if he is not given the chance, GIVEN THAT he HAS the potential to play well.

Gila has to start, small expo from history: in 1982 world cup, paolo rossi as well as the whole italian team started poorly , but in the last four games on this tournament rossi scored 6 goals!
I do not compare rossi to gilardino but lets give a kid a chance, and besides In attack we need esxperienced player to enter the game f smth goes wrong, so if sheva and pippo will play both whom you gonna bring in to make changes in attack line?, now for this purpose Gila is not good, so let him start and run around starving for goal and if we have problems we will get experienced bomber like pippo in !

I don't think talpa.tv is showing any CL games, only Serie A and Dutch Eredevisie, I think.
P2P progs like PPLive and PPStream are your best shot I guess. Quality as of late on PPLive has been quite bad but Shanghai is usually the best of the bunch.
For those with Canadian SAT TV, TSN all the way.

Carlo should lay into these guys, especially Seedorf and Serginho; I wonder if these guys think this is a scrimmage game or what? We have played poorly, with no incentive or initiative.
Guys and gals we need some much needed creativity, where will it come from, Anybody got suggestions?

Just back from watching it on ITV1. Milan haven't played with too much vigour. We had a fair number of chances before our goal, then when Lyon equalised they've put on more pressure. I'm quite disappointed with Milan - they don't seem to have much desire and have sometimes been misplacing passes and losing the ball easily. Also, Inzaghi shouldn't have been booked, and Pirlo, as what seems to be the norm nowadays, has been quite quiet. Anyway, FORZA MILAN!!!!!

zlatanov
04-04-2006, 14:41
Well, to answer the question good or bad - e are playing BAD and we look very very unsettled and nervous. It's Milan that's creating opportunities for Lyon and not the other way around. So far, 1-1 is a great score given that due to our own mistakes and lack of concentration in defence, the score could have been 1-2 and even 1-3 for the visitors. Bad game for Kakha Kaladze, Dida isn't at his best too but in genenral the whole team seems a bit unsettled when we have to defend, and that's how the goal came - a free kick by JP found 3 unmarked Lyon players, Dida couldn't reach the ball and it went to a pack of players from whom Diarra was the only one who jumped to get it and score a rather scrapy goal.
Good thing that halftime came and the result was only 1-1 because the team was falling apart from nervs in the last 5-10 min of the first half.
Hoping for a more composed perfomance after the break 'cause we need to score at least 1 more goal.
Vogel might be a good option for the restart.
Forza Milaaaaaaaan !!!!!!!!!

Well, he should have handled that situation better but to be fair with him, Malouda made a meal out of that - there was hardly any contact between Gattuso and Malouda's legs. The ref just got tripped.

Lyon have certainly had the better of things but as Zlatanov says, a lot of it is down to their pressing game forcing mistakes from us, from players who have enough experience to deal with this better than they have so far.

whats encouraging is that when we have got through their midfield we have had quite a few decent breaks with 3 or 4 forward, so far, with the obvious exception of the goal, all of these moves have broken down due to mistimed/misplaced passes. On one of these breaks we had both Sheva and Pippo open  but Seedorf didnt see them and carried the ball wide....

Yeah, Cris showed lack of class there ... yet the ref shows a YC to Pippo only.
I watched the replay with the camera focused on Malouda's legs and it was easy to see how he "invented" the contact and tricked the ref.

i don't see anything wrong with putting in maldini. think far man. we are losing the ball and defend badly so carlo put maldini in and push the very attacking serginho up which prove to be a good sub as serginho and maldini played well on the left and create chances for us.

you don't need 10 strikers to score goals. this is a team game, we need balance. if we concede 1 more goal then we are dead. i still feel that the ambro and maldini subs are smart choices.

Ok. I Did Calm Down Yet But I Will Try To Give Me Realistic View Of This Game. First Our Defence Very Very Very Shaky, Dida? I Don;t Know What Is Up With Him But He Better Change Or Abbiati Is Back! Our Midfield Played Also Badly Ecept For Gattuso. This Man Is A Milan Soldier Who Fights For Everything On The Pitch. Our Attack, Pippo Did Try Somthing But Couldn't Do Much. Kaka, Sheva Played Badly. The Only Reason Why We Deserved This Win Is Because We Fighted To The End And Never Give Up And That Is Milan. Forza Milan. Also A Big Part Of This Win Goes To Fans That Were At The Stadium.

I don't think Dida was too bad, he only made one mistake... I don't blame him for the goal. And didn't anyone notice how poorly Seedorf and Pirlo played? That was disgrace, they looked so havy and hardly make any movement.
I think Maldini entered to back up Serginho, so he could play as left winger and not as a defender... that was prety smart move by Carlo IMO.
And what about Sheva?? Is there a player in the world that can replace him in milan?? Ofcause not!!! He created all three goals, he set up Seedorf free all by himslef on the left flank to cross for Inzaghi, then after his shot came back from both bars Inzaghi scored again, and the third goal... Whoever thinks that we should sell Sheva and bring Torres or whatever, let me just say u are a moron.

But I think that if Milan want to keep being competitive next season, there are huge changes have to be made.

And what about Sergunho, he managed to cut Lyon's defence couple times all by himself... our midfield was a disgrace though, I still can't believe we played that bad.
We are the luckiest unlucky team in the world... lol, well that's true.

MOM Shevchenko !!!!!!!! :ilol: NO WAY !!!!!!!!!

Playing 1 pass and doing a couple of things in the last 2 mins hardly stands him in good stead for being MOM. What about the times he lost his marker at defending, the times he gave the ball away, the times he didn't track back .... for the majority of the game he had no energy, no enthusiasm .... just like the rest of the damn team. Only Gattuso, Inzaghi, Nesta and Serginho can come out of that game with credit, the rest were atrocious and need a damn good kick up the ass.

Hi there all, this is my first post, I am a milanista since 1987, I was very very young at that time. Tonight, Milan's spirit won, nothing else, I have seen Milan pass though difficult times and always win, I still remember at the eve of 1994 champiosn league final against Barcelona, every one was talking and calculating how many goals will Milan receive from Romario and friends. They udnerstimated Capello (who can understimate this man?), they understimated Boban, Savicevic, Massaro, Tasotti, Maldini, not to mention that Baresi and Costa who did not play that night .... How they believed they can beat such a collection of Gods I don't know ....

However, many things have to change, many things that should have happened since last summer and not now. Better Milan change many things, we seem to lag behind when catching pure talents like we used to do before (Savicevic-Boban-Van Basten- etc...). Carlo cannot keep on playing and fighting on all fronts with the same players over and over. This is our problem, he is not rotating players because he does not have the quality at bench. I hope he sees how all teams in Europe even smaller teams buy players to fight on all fronts.

We are weak on head to head comfronts, Pirlo seems to stumble when any one just makes a move, Seedorf slips on the ground a lot, etc .... We better shape up and soon. Carlo should now change something and very soon. We must stop buying old players whom we will eventually put them on bench as usual ...We must make a decision soon on Gila, this guy must be shaped up and helped by Carlo. We keep on buying players and putting them on bench...This is not correct. I came to respect Juventus deeply, I respect a team who is always up there and does not care if he sells :
- Baggio
- Ravanelli
- Vieri
- Zidane
- Davids
- Di Vaio
- and many many others ...

We have to learn from this ...

I just hope Carlo changes something before the semis, we need that.

Well Jim_UK, don't u think u are too demanding??? Maybe u want to blame him for bad pitch condition??
U saying he lost his marker at defending??? Well let me remind u one little thing: HE IS A STRIKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE ISN"T SUPPOSE TO MARK ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And how many times Inzaghi tracked back???... none!!!
And I'm sick with all this Gattuso crap, the guy make some hard takle and yell a little bit and eveyone here praise him as some big hero... And what about Serginho, he didn't lost the ball couple times?? Man u are pissing me off, u better shut up.
Sheva has that spark, we won thanks to him, just look at his involment in every goal.

P.s. By The Way What Was The Attendece At San Siro. I Know There Was 9.000 Lyon Fans.

I disagree with your assessment of todays Sheva's performance.
He participated in all 3 goals. 2nd goal - he got unlucky, Pippo got lucky.
So, Andrey did much better than plain badly.

Without Sheva and without Pippo we would get kicked out of CL today.
I vote for Sheva today. Serghinio was impressive too.

You're talking nonsense it's EVERYONE'S job to mark at free-kicks and set pieces, if you're given someone to mark you mark them .... man you know nothing. Inzaghi was reasonably dangerous all game, Shevchenko was hardly in the game that's the point i'm making. So you're saying Pirlo and Seedorf were better than Gattuso ? Usually you'd be right, today you are not ... they were both terrible and defensively, as in closing players down and making tackles, Gattuso was good.

No i'm not too demanding, it's simple play. When you don't have the ball you chase for all your worth to get it ... you said yourself Pirlo and Seedorf seemed heavy, well so too were Kaka, Shevchenko, Costacurta and in some case Kaladze. You can't look through rose tinted glasses all the time, i hardly ever criticise the team but this time i'm justified !

We were very lucky this evening. Thanks to Pippo who was again on the right place, a typical 'Pippo-goal'.
But Ancelotti proved again that he's an average coach in my eyes. Did anyone understand his substitutions ?? Ok, Ambro i understand a bit, he's a strong header. But Maldini in for Gattuso ?? That should have been Rui Costa or Gilardino. We needed a goal desperately and he does substitutions like that and keeps on playing with 4 defenders. That's Ancelotti's biggest problem: he never dares to take risks. He's quite a coward actually.
But it ended lucky for Milan, but we were close to the elimination. If we meet Barca, it has to been better then today !
Defense was again very shaky. Only Nesta played a good game in defense. And Serginho quite good in attacking, not in defending.
Sheva was nowhere but he proves to be decisive again.
Also Dida didn't look good on the goal. A ball that close to the goal must be his ball ! But we have to say that the marking there was also horrible.

It was a poor performance by our standards and i don't feel anyone deserved MOM but if you have to pick then it would be Pippo. We were very sloppy and played with lethargy. Is it a case of a long season getting to old legs? i don't know. Or is it that we have serious problems motivating ourselves when we are not playing Europe's elite?

Bil post 191 was dedicated to u, and not 190... it was misunderstanding.

And Jim I didn't say Seedorf or Pirlo was better than Gattuso, so what the hell are u talking about??? U expect from Sheva too much, every time he got the ball there was two or three defenders all around him... It seemed like everyone played for himself, and on every Milan player it was 2 or 3 Lyon players. The thing is even when u kept tight and touch the ball 3 or 4 times the whole match, still be able to creat something, and that what Sheva did. I'm saying Sheva earned his place to be one of three greatest Milan strikers alongside Van Basten and Nordal, when he will retire I think it will take 5-10 years to replace him.

On the contrary - i think his subs were spot on and a lot of credit has to go to him. problem is that his subs and the way he changed tactics were so subtle and simply amazing that most people with more "straightforward" and "traditional" - no offense intended - thinking like "we need to score goals then Rui or Gila have to go in" won't get it for quite some time how Ambro for Pirlo and Maldini coming in place of Gattuso turned the game on its head.

Bram I already explained the Maldini subsitution: it allowed Serginho to play as a winger and not as a defender, to give him more freedom on the left flank.

And I don't understand why people always appreciate Gattuso??? The man make couple takles, scream a little bit, showing some emotions and people instantly call him the spirit of the team, the hero or whatever... let me play for milan, I can scream like crazy and make angry face every time the camera is zoomed on me, than people think that I'm the MOM or MVP or whatever.

I feel he was right on the Maldini substitution.
A cross from Serginho was by far the better gamble than a through pass or a goal from Rui Costa or Gila(not scored a goal in Europe). The only way he could achieve that and not destroy the shape of the team was to bring on Maldini and to push Sergniho further a field.

I cant believe the crap written about Seedorf. Seedorf played a good game and was alone with Gattuso. Pirlo was incredibly dissappointing. He needs to rest, he was very bad today could not hold the ball. And if you want an impressive Milan then Pirlo has to be at the top of his game. Seedorf assisted the first goal and was working his ass off, granted some of his defending was not up to scratch but he and Gattuso were making up for Pirlo and Kaka. Kaka was defended out by the LYON players. The Lyon players were impressive physically we could not compete with them, they have huge guys all over the pitch and we were outmuscled. Thats why the relief was AMBROSINI WHO gave a bit of strength.... AND THOSE THAT CRITICIZE ANCELLOTI IN THIS GAME IN PARTICULAR ARE IDIOTS... HIS SUBSTITUTIONS WERE SPOT ON... SERGINHO WAS OUR ONLLY CREATIVE PLAYER DESPITE ALL THE PRESSURE ON HiM....maldini coming in freed him a bit.... And we need a very good RIGHT BACK... MALOUDA was too much on the side. CREDIT TO LYON... Played a good game... And as for GILARDINO he is a great player I am convinced but in these games you need someone with INZAGHIs experience and predatory instinct.... CAFU WE ARE ALL WAITING FOR YOU TO COME BACK... FORZA MILAN....

An absolute thriller and when it looked it was all over we managed to score the second decisive goal two minutes from time. Even though we were not the better side throughout we still knew how to seal the all important victory. Firstly we have to give Lyon full credit and undoubtedly they are among the finest teams in Europe at the moment. Once again we paid dearly for our terrible defending on set-pieces which is our biggest problem since the start of the season. Clearly we don't have a clue how to mark on set-pieces and apart from Diarra's goal there was a chance minutes later and once again one of their players rose unmarked and headed against our post. Dida as usual this season was responsible for their goal by mistiming his come-off. We struggled to force our game and failed to deal with their high pressure tactic up the field. Our game was terribly affected by the very poor form of Pirlo our worst player of the match in my opinion. I was impressed by Carlo's last substitution by pushing in Maldini on for Gattusso and pushing Serginho up the field to play as a left winger with Kaka switching to the right to provide more width and stretch their compact defence. Our attack improved a lot with that sub as Serginho's pace down the left was much notable during the closest stages. The match reminds me with the corresponding quarter final fixture against Ajax during our victorious 2003 campaign which is a good omen. It went through a much similar circumstances with Pippo the saviour in stoppage time. Pippo was our most influential attacking weapon and was very lively upfront and caused his marker Chris all sorts of trouble. Sheva was silent most of the time but as usual sparked our victory with his angled drive that hit both posts before Pippo's finish and his killer goal deep into stoppage time. Finally I am very impressed with Lyon's anchorman Mohamadou Diarra and this player definitely would be a crack in the game. I hope we'll try to capture his services for the coming season. Forza Milan

No one noticed that Stam was injured, I think many underestimate the big part he plays in our team. He can be played as a CD and as a RB, and give our defence a lot of "muscles"... I'm sure I miss this big guy, I don't want him to leave, he is a classic defender, one of the best. And there was great to see Maldini trying to push the team in the left flank, as much I admire Sheva but Maldini is our true captain. I remember that after Liverpool equlised at Istanbul he was the first that came out the shock and pushed the team forward.
And Costacurta realy should retire, he looks bad.

in my eyes those changes didn't turn the game around, it was just luck that we scored another goal. Well maybe not 100% luck, since Milan scores a lot in the last minutes, that's a matter of physics and determination also, but i don't think the changes made any difference. To bring Ambro was not bad, he's a strong header, but to bring Maldini for Gattuso was not the right decision i think. And San Siro agreed with me following the booing and yelling. But it turned out well so that's good. But i didn't agree with that last substitution. although i hope that maldini is now fully recovered to replace Kaladze in central defense, who plays weak in the last weeks.

Oh come on man, before those changes we were dead meat up for grabs as Lyon effortlessly controlled the game, we couldn't even reach the Lyon PA let alone think of scoring a goal even with all the luck in the world backing us.
After the changes, both defense and midfeild were solidified while moving Sergio up the wing gave substance to our attacks, and that's how the goal came. Rui, as slow as he's been in his last outings, would have been eaten alive by the Lyon players and would have only wasted time with his holding of the ball ... getting Sergio up there to support Kaka and Sheva in building the attacks was the ultimate decision for the win, IMo that is.

Indeed it was not a bad idea to put Serginho more attacking, but that could have been an option without bringing Maldini too. Ancelotti always keeps playing with 4 players in the back !! He never never risks to play with 3 defenders. Although we needed a goal. So i still think a substitution Pirlo-Ambrosini (like he did, that was good) and Gattuso-Rui Costa would have been better. And than play like this :

GK : Dida
3 DEF : Costacurta Nesta Kaladze
MIDF: Seedorf, Ambro, Rui Costa, Kaka, Serginho
ATT: Inzaghi, Sheva

What was wrong with that ? Ok, it's taking risks but that's what u need to do if you are behind 10mins from time. So it was good to put Serginho more in front, but we could have done that in a 3-5-2 too instead of keep playing with 4 defenders.

The problem with 3-5-2 is that the wingbacks have to lend a helping hand to the three defenders. Playing that way against a very athletic side would have meant that Seedorf and Serginho would probably have been forced into a 5-3-2 system and spent the rest of the game covering the whole pitch to attack and then defend. Why not let them attack without any defensive duties in a 4-4-2 system that eventually won the game.

It was luck that we scored, but its upto the players to play for their lives and try and score not Carlo. The changes that Carlo made were the right ones as it allowed Serghinio and Seedorf to push further forward. Carlo didnt have many options and we cant complain with his changes today. Maldini was right, but I did think Vogel was better than Ambro...........All water under the bridge, Carlo earned his pay today, some of the players need to start earning theirs.

It was a very very tough game. None of the teams could gain controll of the game throughout the whole 90 minutes. It was just like a battle field out there. A lot of you keep saying that if we face Barcelona, we have to be a lot sharper. NO NO NO my friends. I have said this and will repeat it again. Today, we just beat the toughest team in the Champions League and in Europe. Lyon is a technically and physically gifted team. With skilled players like Fred, Juninho, Wiltord and Malouda and physical forces in Diarra and Cacapa, Cris. In my eyes, Lyon is better then Barcelona who really lack balance between there forward line and their defence.

Anyhow, about the game. Lyon played a good game that never allowed us to gain controll even when we HAD to score a goal in the second half. They never laid back and kept coming up to keep our defence on their heels. We did have more of the ball but could not really create any clear chances. In fact, Lyon didn't manage to create any clear chances as well. A lot of the situations that they had, were created by our own players. The Dida misque and the Kaladze-Dida miscomunication almost gifted them the lead. Then Fred had an open header which unluckully hit the post. We on the other side didn't have as clear opportunities as we were made to work for our chances rather then them giving us gifts.

The goals we scored were all courtesy of Sheva-Inzaghi. It was the quiet Shevchenko who with great vision gave Seedorf all the time in the world to pick a spot to cross in the first goal.....where Inzaghi with mastery put the ball at the only place where Coupet could not get it. Then it was Sheva's shot that rattled both posts only for Inzaghi to be in the right place again to pounce on it. The third was a great anticipation by Sheva in somewhat of a gift. So I really don't know how some of you can say that Sheva had a horrible game. Yes he did not touch the ball every 2 minutes, but when he touched it, he certainly did the right thing with it. In fact, the most dissapointing player of our attack was Kaka. I know he was closely garded throughout the whole game, but it seemd that he lost the ball every time he touched it. Pirlo was not horrible either. He had a quiet game in which he did not create anything. If you measure it by his standars however, he would probably get a low grade. He had an average game I think. Seedorf I think had a good game. Held the ball good, had an assist and a couple of great shots. It was on the defensive end where he was non-existant. And Gattuso had a great game as well. Without him, Malouda would have killed us on the right.

Their goal was more of a pile up in front of our own goal.....created by our own freaking players. They were too deep and allowed three Lyon players to be right in our own 5 meter box. They should have formed the line of defence further away, which would have given Dida a clearer situation to come out. It was indeed a great cross by Juninho whose free kicks were making me shi! my pants.

In coulcusion, I don't think we had a great game but neither did Lyon. It was a physical battle and a tightly contested game in which most of their chances were given to them by our own players. The defence played really bad in the first half and looked shaky on a couple of occasions. Neither team dominated as both teams had their share of chances. The Lyon players that cought my eyes were definatly Diarra and Malouda. Diarra is a beast of a player. He can open up the game as well as he controlled the ball and calmed the play down quite a few times. He totally shut down Kaka and anything that was comming through that middle. What a player this guy is. Malouda on the other hand tormented that wing and his pace made quite some trouble. Juninho didn't do much in open play, but this guy can hit the sh!t out of a dead ball. Definetly the best free kick taker in the world.

well............. i over sleep and miss the game!!! F**K . But the most important is Milan Won.

After saw the result, i really think that milan can in this year CL. We beatan the German Champion and France Champion. Next assigment is to beat the Spanish Champion ( Barca).

I found that we didnt play well as what u ppl comment in this treat.By Inzaghi prove that he is stil capable and with some luck (maybe) we done it. As wat Carlo say It the experience that make the different in which Milan had plenty. Milan already paid the experience with the bitter defeat to Leverkusen and Liverpool. It will be fair enough if MIlan won.

FoRza InZaghi ForZa MiLan I LoVe you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zlatanov... did I already tell u that I don't like u?
And Bram don't be so touchy, being called an idiot it's not the end of the world.
Sasha, ... and? The fact that hardly anyone here likes you doesn't seem to bother you that much 'cause you get banned and yet you keep returning time and time again under a new nick. So, not sure what's your point with the like you don't like you thing ... it's not like I am trying to give you an woodie right?

Guys and gals I believe we have played the best team in CL in Lyon. Lyon were a worthy opponent, and as God forbade we didn't lose. If we had lost I would have supported Lyon all the way. They remind me so much of how Milan play. And for good measure Diarra should be shopping for a house around Lake Como :).
Anyway back to the game, forgive me I'm so high on Diarra, he reminds me of Desailly.
Back to the game, Lyon took Pirlo and Kaka out of the game, thanks to the aforementioned Diarra. We won this game due to sheer will. To all those people who are calling for Kaladze and Dida to somehow hide under a rock, please remember this is the same defence that didn't concede goals in like how many games? They had a few hiccups but nothing significant. Nobody plays a perfect game!!!!!
And for our next opponent, I was worried about Barca when the draw was made, but after doing my amateur scouting of Barca's matches; who hasn't noticed their numerous vulnerabilities. I'm not even sure they will beat Benfica, but if they do, the way we will beat them is to stifle that punk Iniesta and have Gattusso track Deco. If we cut off the supply to Gaucho, and not give Gaucho(Ronaldinho) any space to run at our defence, all their creativity is moot. And we should just play our attacking game with zest, and we have this all sewn up.
Lastly, just a few tid bits
1. Bayern seem to be our good omen in the CL, anytime our paths have crossed in the competition, we have gone on to lift the cup.
2. And I'm not sure on this, somebody can correct me, but I don't think we have ever lost in semi finals in the CL

I believe we win this competition this year
Forza Milan

Well, Pippo is one of the greatest ''goal celebrators'' in the world, not to mention his goals are always important.
I propose Pippo's cannonization (if that's the right translation), he could be, ''San Pippo Salvatore'', i think we should send a request to Benedetto XVI, :w221: hahah.

same here. Diarra reminds me of Desailly. His goal against us reminds me of Desailly's goal against Monaco. the defense was completely outjumped, you see only one big head high above everybody else.

two minor corrections. :)
1. Bayern is a good omen to us not just in CL, but all European tournaments. Hopefully this time we will make that happen again. :)
2. We did lose one semi-final, it was 55-56, our first ever semi-final. We lost to Real Madrid 4-5 (2-4, 2-1). But we have won 9 semi-finals in a row ever since then, including one group-stage semi-final in 92-93, and a one-leg semi-final in 93-94. :star:

All trends are only to be broken.
I never rely on the past statistics. are you driving looking in the rear mirror or can technical analysis really predict the market future moves? There is an old saying on Wall street "The trend is your friend until it is NOT."

Good omens do not cut it, for me at least.

wow wow I'm so thirld that we won 3-1 and I enjoyed seeing the game
live in tv. It was tough game. Milan played good and they deserved to won
I was on purssuer till Sheva goal. Inzaghi and nobady but Inzaghi scored
2 crusial goals. Inzaghi did very very job and he save us I'm so proud of himOur defends played well but they did many mistakes.
Lyon played well also. Kaka didn't do much hope he will pay good in smi
final against Barca or Benfica. Nesta did a great job and Also serginho.
Pirlo & seedrof were out of game . Gatusso did very good job but only he give up a free kick to lyon like first one when lyon scored goa I'm so glad he did good job for very very little time I see kaldze
did good job. Costacourta did very very good job and defends so well. Well
except of goal sheva was not playing good like almost every time he does.
Didda !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. did very bad job and give up alot of mistakes that
would cause milan if Inzaghi & sheva didn't score
:5schal: :5schal:   :5guitar:

Forza Inzaghi + Sheva + Nesta + all other Milan player

What a magnificient night for Milan as well as all Milanistas! Heart-throbbing, nerve-wreaking game it was till the very last minute. Everyone was holding their breath till the very end until Sheva scored the decisive goal. San Siro erupted, so did every Milanistas. Bravo to all the fans in San Siro pushing Milan ahead, giving them the extra pysche to edge out the more superior Lyon side yesterday.

But just to comment on the game itself,
some bad points 1st:

Milan was not their usual self infront of their own crowd. Dida and the defence lacked communication. Pirlo and Kaka wasnt their creative, offensive usual self. Pirlo played too defensively and Kaka was not given the space to run at the defence(not his fault tho :D dam Diarra ). Sheva was quiet to say the least. Most probably is because of the service from Billy either went too long or too short for Sheva to do anything. Correct me if im wrong.

Good points:
Lyon was able to pin us at our own half until Carlo made the spot on substituition of Maldini and Ambro. Both gave us the steel and extra confidence of going forward. Making use of the ever-dangerous Serginho on the left while pushing Kaka to the right to distract was jus brilliant. Initially i was also as furious as Warren when Maldini came on for Gattuso. But as the game went on, i realised the importance of the change. Always playing with a back 4 gives the rest of the department more freeedom to attack and Carlo did the right thing by keeping the shape of the team(as said by Zlat i think).

Pippo was a constant menace to LYon's defence and no matter how people say he is just a "happen-to-be-there" striker, i would still reckon him as world-class :D .

Every player played a part in this game and all deserves credit. Without determination and solidity from every individual, it could have been a very different result. Now i can only dream to see il Capitano lifting the 7th UCL cup in Paris. :sob: FORZA MILAN!!!

PS: Oh did anyone see Seedorf's attempt at goal at the end of the 1st half, where he faked pass 2 defenders sooooo fast to take a quick lightning shot. Wow, i thot he was Ronaldinho!! :D

Milan played it right... we have this big burden in our shoulders to win since last year's
champions failure that has suuuuuuurely make us more cautious... so in this game I would say Milan played COLDLY not showing much emotions and only wanted to be just technical and methodical...
It was probably not the most flaring performance as when Kaka and Pirlo and Seedorf are on fire... but we did the job right, probably coldly, emotionless but SIMPLY RIGHT!!!...
...Congrats to all Milan fans!!!!

As I've said, im back to criticize a bit... :) ....sorry guys. First of all, we showed again we are extremly dangerous up front, kaka-sheva-pippo is as deadly as messi-ronaldinho-eto'o. Nesta,Kaladze,Serginho,Gattuso,Seedorf did well. KAka had tough time against BRILLIANT DIARRA, and Billy just CANT play RB, its not his fauld, he gave his all. He simply has no power in him left. Congrats to Billy for his effort anyway!
Now, Pirlo? I know people in here respect our "fantasista" along with kaka', but lets look at it in realistic way - he sucks this season, all season long! Mot a single great game by him. I have nothing against him as a person, but he simply is not playing well enough. Even his passes are not good enough any more, he cant defend or run enough. We have to deal with that Pirlo's problem in Milanello or replace him soon. Milan needs to be above ANY single player. Looking at Diarra makes me think : Where is Pirlo better than this guy? Except for the long balls.

Sash, try to limit your replies only to posts whose meaning you have somehow managed to understand. Otherwise, you just end up looking like ... yourself.
But let me try to clarify it for a "special" guy like you - you are worried about it, Maldini and co aren't ... hope it gets through this time.

On the contrary - i think his subs were spot on and a lot of credit has to go to him. problem is that his subs and the way he changed tactics were so subtle and simply amazing that most people with more "straightforward" and "traditional" - no offense intended - thinking like "we need to score goals then Rui or Gila have to go in" won't get it for quite some time how Ambro for Pirlo and Maldini coming in place of Gattuso turned the game on its head.

finally i found someone who use his brain before commenting. carlo did the correct thing, i would have done that too if i am in his shoes.. at that point in time, we simply need to stop the lyon's attack and go forward. serginho is by far our most dangerous man on the pitch when he just keep dancing into the opponent area so pushing him up is the perfect choice.
