A.C.MILAN COMUNICATO UFFICIALE
17/05/2006
MILANO - L'A.C.Milan comunica ufficialmente di aver sottoscritto un contratto con il calciatore Giuseppe Favalli fino al 30 giugno 2008.
Well.... Another old one ..... :5inter:
well we do need some experience on the LB since there are only: Kaladze,Serginho,MAldini,Jankulovski.....

Interesting. From now on Kaladze is definetely a central defender. He convinced the club, Carlo, Tassoti etc. - and me! - that he is the right guy for this role. It'll represent a surprise if he returns to his old position.
I think there wasn`t need to buy favali! he is an old player who I can bet won`t play in Milan`s starting 11!

Quite frankly I don't know why we signed the guy given that his role is strictly limited to playing left back (I think I've seen him play as RB for Lazio byt only im emergencies). As mrki pointed out - not sure if he was sarcastic or what - but we have like a whole bunch of players who could play LB - Maldini, Kaladze, Sergio, janku, and as things see to be going - Gallas too. It's beyond me why we would fill in one team spot, and add to our sallary burden by getting a 34 yo player, who would hardly ever make it into the first team unless 3-4 other people (Maldini, Sergio, Kakha, Gallas) are unable to play.
The only reasonable explanation IMO is that we got him just until we make sure that we capture Gallas and after that we would offload Favali back to Lazio as part of a deal for Oddo ... the same could happen with other teams, not just Lazio.

Go Away!
zlatanov, I was extremly sarcastic. This transfer only makes sence if we will trade him for someone.

Wutz so wrong with Favalli? He played in Lazio for all his life and when we are short of defenders we go and sign a Lazio defender and that solves our problems. (Maybe Nestas influence has somewhat grown in Milanello).
Just to remind you peoples that if (when) Gallas commes we will be pushing alot down the left flank in defence and probably moove Serginho to the midfield and Janku to the defence so it doesnt hurt to have him, remember that Pancaro was a similar player and did reasonably well for us.
I am somewhat concirned that we do have a lot of player covering the left flank while we are really thin on the right, both in def and in the MF.
I didn't mention Maldini in this post.
He kinda looks physical:

we cannot find a better sub than him! we wud like to have YOUNGER ones but will they sit on the bench the way he gonna be made to? although 2 years seam quite far away but I trust carlo and our transfer guru He won't be made to play for longer times, just as a sub or during injuries. Don't worry we will sign good ones too, for the time being, we have gallas! :rock3:

that's the point mrki and I tried to make - we have too many players, and if Gallas does come even more, that can take that role of LB. 4-5 players are more than enough for starters and subs even. Favalli would be like a sub for the sub ... it makes little sense unless the plan is to just get favalli for free and after that use him as a make-weight in another deal.
i hope its the truth zalatanov.we'll see.

What weight??? 1.99 euros?
Galliani is really starting to take the p!ss. Hes turning this Milan squad into bargain basement side that wont even be capable of winning the Uefa Cup if he carries on. Right now we have one defender and thats Nesta.
People can talk all they want about how Kaladze has improved this season, but never the less hes still injury prone and makes alot of mistakes. Stam is going, Billy is too old, Maldini cant be depended on to return, Serghinio has had a phenominal season, but he was always inconsistent in previous seasons and we would be fools to believe he will definately carry on as he did this season. Simic is plain ordinary. I forgot what Cafu looks like, Jankulovski hailed as Milans new best left back in Seria A isnt even considered as a defender and none of us even know what he looks like never mind forgeting his face. Now we have Favalli for god's sake. Our defence is a total shambles. No wonder Sheva wants to leave and go to chelsea. They have seven defenders in the starting 11 not including the goalie.
We need a clear out of unfortunately Billy, Cafu, Stam (Gone), Simic, jankulovski, Ambrosini and Favalli.
We need Gallas, a right back like Alves or Raviellere, and probably even a leftback for the future of our defence like Abidal.
Selling Janku and Ambro would atleast help to fund the signing 0f either Diarra, De Rossi and Mancini.
If Sheva goes then thats a whole different conversation, but our midfield needs rejuvinating and our defence needs to be turned into a defence again. Gallianis signings of Cafu, Stam, Pancaro, Simic, Laursen may have been succesful for the short term future, but that has now expired and all these players are combining to the ruin of our defence.

Our board must be kidding, that's not possible... when we desperately need to rejuvenate the squad they are signing another old timer?!?!?!? Come on, where's our ambition to mount a newer and better squad for the future?!? We will be eternally confined to these short-term and mediocre solutions?!? K77SH C was brilliant in his last remark: we're turning into a "bargain basement side that wont even be capable of winning the Uefa Cup" if that accquiring policy doesn't change!

I still can't believe, it's positively RIDICULOUS...
Now im not trying to suggest for a minute that the local Milan fans should start acting like Inter fans or even Roma fans, but maybe they should just remind Galliani who he works for. Im sure he thinks he is at Chievo Verona because Im sick of being linked to donkeys like Favalli and Zebina. They are certainly not flying donkeys.
Milan fans are great, they accept everything and support all new signings. But its time they got involved and made their feelings clear. It took Sheva to request Berlu to sign Rui, now its the turn of the fans to request a defence!!

-Favalli came for FREE, his wages wud be no more than 50k eur/week! He will be played just a back up! I don't think we will sign any more oldies. He is just 1 guy in big the shopping list so there is lot more to come.
-Gallas is already with us and along with him the other new and young french-man (name ???) is also set to join us plus we might also have sum1 from the jube squad 1ce they go down. This is just what is known! our transferistas might be planning some big surprises
-Favalli won't be the part of milan revolution 07, just a sub for a sub!

There is no such thing as a free transfer. 50k a week = over 2 m a year and over 10 million over five years. We all know he will be with us now forever just like Simic etc etc etc
There is no solid evidence we are after the young french guy and how good is he anyway. As for taking Juve's players once they go down, Im not filled with confidence as that may never even happen.
Your post says we have a whole host of new players, but in reality we have 1 new player if you can call him that.

his contarct is till 2008 (surely won't be extended) and there is no guarantee that he might wanna continue that long either and yes his contract is over at inter which makes his atleast officially a "free" player.
abt him being our "list".......the season has just ended and the official transfer window starts from 1 june till 31 aug midnight...the action hasn't even started so just wait and watch before fuming over this minuscule signing!
I dont like Oddo, Braida said that not Galliani and they also said we dont sell our best players.
But thats not my point, we probably will sign one of those players, but that is no where nearly enough.

Inter wont pay his wages we will and with a contract of 2 years at the rate you said we will pay him over 4m. Far too much for a player who we all hope will never have to play.
Im fuming over previous seasons signings which dont indicate us buying the players we need. ie 2 or even 3 real defenders, Diarra or De Rossi and a striker, maybe even a goalie.

ok 4mn is big for him but then again 50k euro is just a highest possible assumption!
the players also have to be ready to play with us as they are not robots who obey the coach's orders. Milan management is known for making the best transfer decisions which really doesn't mean signing high rated players all the time.
All those players u mentioned might be getting offers from so many clubs, and if their wages or signing amount surpass milan's limits why should we go for them because if they don't commit with us it doesn't mean the end of milan, there will always be some1 else. The latest demand of lyon is 24 mn pound for diarra which is too BIG.
WC is coming..."a talent showcase" we might just get sum1 from trinidad and tobago or saudi or some some country like these ones.

Im sure Favalli will be a solid steady player for us, not exceptional but useful on occasion.
However I do have a major worry because of this deal, Sheva is undecided and will be paying plenty of interest to Milans transfer moves as they are a good sign of ambition.
Chelsea have shown him their intentions by going out and signing Ballack, Germany's star player and one of the most sought after players in Europe, on a wage of 130k a week
In response, Milan bought, erm, Favalli :u31:
Things like this make a difference to players like Sheva, he's at his peak and needs to know the club match his ambitions for the next few seasons. At this rate the most common treatment at Milan lab next season will be for Botox injections ;)

There's no way I could be satisfied with that transfer... it's the kind of lousy, mediocre and short-term solution that fits well with a small and puny side, not with a football titan like Milan. Thinking that way, who'll be the next oldie in line? Zinho? Romário? Damn... :(

This isn't funny really. Would you prefer we signed Del Horno or who? There aren't many players that can play solid left back and be good both ways. And that's just what Favalli might come out to be. If you look at all the left backs of all the national teams going to the world cup who'd you pick and sign for Milan. I'll do just that....go surf some national teams and post players here and then lets argue who we could have signed. I am quite sure that no one who we could settle for would cost less than 25mil€ and most probably wouldnt settle for less than 2.5mil€/year salary. Given we have Serginho/Maldini/Jankulovski who all can play left back pretty solidly there isn't a need to buy an expensive one yet. Next season when Serginho and Maldini retire we will have Favalli as an backup and Janku as an alternative.
Janku is a prospect really and I don't think that any of the last year signings (him, Vogel and Gilla) were missed ones. Vogel didn't play (don't ask me why -- but I'll say one thing Milan - Bayern 4:1!) and Gilla had a bad season but he can do better. If he did better this term we might've been up there with two trophys. And if he had scored on Barca at the San Siro (which was just a matter of luck) he would be a hero today.
Also, this transfer policy allows for the club not to sign experiments. We know Favalli can and will do what he is signed to do. If you sign an experiment he might just end up a waste of money. And MORE IMPORTANTLY, an experiment gone bad ends up being a weak link in the team. We look at players seasons in advance and plan for transfers seasons in advance, we are Milan, nothing is random.

We're showing a disgusting lack of ambition, that's what's piss me off... and that 'thoughtful' Galliani's strategy is only postponing the inevitable, that is to say, the renewement of squad that are in bad need not only of fresh blood, but mainly of young talents hungry for glory.

You could be right, but Milan is a club of the highest level and all of its players are of the highest level! That being said, no player whos talent is short of Ronaldinhos should be good enough. And to find such a player at LB for little money is nearly impossible. But we already have one such player in Maldini! When he retires look to sign another one. This season we really need another striker a defender to replace Stam and a supporting MF. We had some serious injury problems this term and we need to keep faith in our squad. World class signings..yes..but it's hard to find such players :) Henry anyone? :)
Sorry for what-really-shold've-been-one-post in three parts :)
Did you watch the Barca game? The best thing billy did was walk on the pitch. Fair enough, hes old, but he struggled in that game.
Other players may cost more than Favalli, but at least they will contribute to Milan. If you want names, then Abidal from Lyon is amazing, but I guess we will wait until the WC and let everyone see how good he is and then pretend to be interested and just settle for favalli.
We are AC Milan arent we????????????????????????????????

Remember Favalli is a squad player, nothing else. He is not expected going into the starting eleven. Also, he is free so this is an okay transfer I think...
Welcome Favalli :)
many things i try to understand in ACM´s period of transfers but it´s impossible...why Favalli?? why a LB player??
isn´t Serginho, Maldini, Kaladze or Jankulovski enough?? i share the same opinion of some of you...
it´s true that in the beginning of this season we said that this defence would fail but we managed the situation and almost won the Serie A and reached CL final..
but this does not mean that we didn´t need new players...i think we had luck with some things.
let´s wait to see the next episode of this circus...

Well personally i think it makes some sense......
First off kaladze has proved himself to be the new starting CB ....so we need a new LB
maldini:.....His last season with us...and we do not know the severity of his injury....could be reduced to about 20 games or so
Serginho....great season, but will it be a one off ???...also alot more useful going foward for us.....only a LB in an emergency
Marek......same a serginho if u ask me....a good defender, but better in midfield on the wings....good alternative for seedorf in games
People seem to forget that defending means more than running down defenders ..it about positional sense, communication and most of all EXPERIENCE....hence most of the older players ion any team are either the GK or a defender......
Favalli has experience and knows the serie a well, knows the players, nesta , maldini well, thus will have little problems communicating with the team.....plus he is free and if there are no other options available then why not get a player of his quality until we find something better.....
There are alot more urgent positions that we need to be spending money on this transfer season , so if we can get a free LB who is a good player in the serie A, then why the hell not....
I remember alot of people where saying the same when we got panacaro...and look at the great job he did for us.......
Alsdo we are not giving the management enough credit......
They know they want gallas, and if he comes kaladze will go back to left back....so if they make this move it must mean that the chances of getting gallas are slim to none, and if that is the case it implies that the chances of sheva leaving for chelsea are also decreasing

I agree with the first two paragraphs Triniman, but not the last portion of the third.
I think that the Gallas move will still be on, with Kaladze going back to LB, and Favalli being back up...and I doubt the Gallas transfer will have any bearing on whether Sheva goes or stays.
I hope they can use Favalli in exchange for Oddo. This shld lower Oddo's transfer fee. I feel tat Oddo will b a gd signing. Personally, I feel tat Costacurta shld retire & b a player agent for our italian players. In tat way, our players won't b lured 2 other clubs. Cafu shld also leave. He is getting too old & injury prone. I hope Milan will stop signing players aged 30 & above.

When is our transfer policy going to change??? Do we even have a youth system?? How are we going to give our youngsters a chance if we keep signing veterans as second or third string backups?? I am just very pissed off at this whole Favalli thing. if it was five years ago when he was in his prime at lazio, i wouldnt mind. but now? if he didnt sign for us, where would he end up? Messina? Chievo? Cagliari? we are not a "second string" club, i dont know why we keep signing players who are way past their prime. This is great, so who is next, is Milan going bring the Great Baresi and Van Basten ouit of retirement too, since Milan would not need to pay transfer fee for them.
For real, MIlan did not need to pay transfer fee for Ballack too, where the heck is Ballack now?
This is exactly why Galli and Berlu really need to think and consider. I mean, why r they keep brining in over the hill players and bargain players. We are Milan not Reginna, no offense to Reginna.
For real, I really don't understand why Milan management would not spend the money on quality players. For two years in a row, Milan won nothing, Inter actually got Italian Cup. So in some strange way, Inter fans could actually say this to us, " What have ur team won the last two years?" NOTHING. yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes, we can say that we finished second and that a few years ago we won the CL and Series A.... but what have Milan won over the past two years??? Really?
NO wonder guys like Sheva wants to leave, it is for signing like Favalli.
Some of you might say that Favalli could be a perfect sub.... but how can Milan develop homegrown talents if they keep signing old timer that will take away the play time of younger players????? Think about that.
I am very upset and pissoff, b/c I really do not see a point in this transfer.
QUite frankly, if this is for trading Oddo, then I guess it kindof make sense, but still????

It is painful for all of us.
Now I am not suggesting we are glory hunters....but we all love Milan and to see Milan do not go after talent after talent and settle for much much much less. And claim they can compete on all fronts is really starting to make me sick.
I mean, if Milan is heading for a youth movment, then I can expect them to struggle, but at lease I know why they are struggling and can look forward for the year after that. But it is different now? Milan is heading for a retirement movment, where they welcome soon to retire players that offer no value to the squad, such as this Favalli signing. If Favalli is a RB, then I agree and would not be upset at all, since Milan got all but one true RB, but Favalli is a LB. There is Kaladaz, Janku, Maldini, Serginho and even Billy. Now what are the chances that all of them will be hurt and cannot play?
I want to make one thing clear, I am not a glory hunter nor I am against old timer. Since I believe in quality not age, and need over want. And quite frankly, I just cannot use quality with Favalli and I doubt Milan need someone like Favalli.
It is very sad to see that instead of going forward, Milan is going backward. I really don't understand this Favalli signing, unless for trade for Oddo, but if that is the case, why would Lazio accept it, since they could have signed Favalli for free too, if they wanted him, right?
I can actually see more sense in Poulsen signing than this. Quite frankly, if Milan continue this way, I really no longer want to buy any merchandize from them. Since I do not want them to spend my money on stupid thing like Favalli signing.
Ballack was free too, just remember that, and he is quality and Milan need someone like him, so how come not Ballack but Favalli?????????????
"Lord_Tawreser: If age is a factor then let me remind you of Billy vs Barca"
U realy think that Costacurta was any good against Barca??? He was pathetic realy, the way he "ran for his life" from Eto'o and let him get one on one with Dida... I realy felt pitty for him, like a little mouse running from lyon.

i agreed. Billy was just plain bad. period. i personally feel that we have to get rid of some luggages from the past like billy for example.
Like all of you, i am not happy about this transfer but neither am i upset. if you guys remember, at one point of time, serginho was our only LB available, i am sure ancelotti wanted a true defensive LB at some point in time.
Let's just wait for the transfers to be concluded before starting the attacks.
lets all be happy we SIGNED(like useual) a 34year old(like useual) defender
wow now our average age isn't 31 bur now 32 ==> lets go to 33
man we need youth!!!

Favalli is very gd player but just for a back up.
He can be used in coppa games and in some serie a games if there are any injuries or a big match coming and a player needs rest.

When is our transfer policy going to change??? Do we even have a youth system?? How are we going to give our youngsters a chance if we keep signing veterans as second or third string backups?? (...) Favalli is certainly not going to be in our starting eleven, so why not take a chance on someone from our youth system or an up and coming star from elsewhere??
Some considerations:
- Milan needed a back up for Serginho and Favalli was choosen. I am not really pleased, but he is ok despite his age. Played two decents matches against Roma in Coppa Italia and he is a better defender than Serginho. For just one season is ok;
- As for our transfer policy, just think how much money the team spent in these transfers that built our squad today (some names are just for the record):
1999: Gennaro Gattuso (Salernitana), José Mari (Atlético Madrid), Serginho (Săo Paulo), Andriy Shevchenko (Dinamo Kiev)
2000: Roque Junior (Palmeiras)
2001: Filippo Inzaghi (Juventus), Manuel Rui Costa (Fiorentina)
2002: Alessandro Nesta (Lazio), Clarence Seedorf (Inter), Rivaldo (Barcelona), Andrea Pirlo (Brescia)
2003: Marcos Cafu (Roma), Giuseppe Pancaro (Lazio), Kaká (Săo Paulo)
2004: Vikash Dhorasoo (Lion), Jaap Stam (Lazio)
2005: Jankulovski (Udinese), Gilardino (Parma).
I honestly think Milan will spend some cash this summer again not only to rejuvenate defense but to strenght the squad as well, but there are three major factors this summer (possible Sheva departure/replacement, Juve in Serie B and the WC 2006). We all need to be a little patient.
Overall, I think there is a balance between "big money"/bargains transfers;
- Finally, I agree that some youngsters (Foggia, Sammarco and maybe Pozzi) deserve a real chance in the first team.

The problem is that for every single step we did in the right direction (Kaká, Gila, etc.), we have another step on the wrong direction (Vieri, Amoroso, etc.)... :irritate:

BTW: Sheva must decide soon if he will stay with us or go away, 'cause if he leaves, we can't wait too long to set up not only the whole transfer's deal, but also to find the necessary replacement.

yea coz strikers like him aren't sitting jobless on the street. If he really cares anout Milan he should give a decision atleast a week befor the WC. I smell henry!

you are so right, pfff its like, oooww he is a free agent, lets sign em
thats what i hate about milan..., crespo was the best 'free' player but he was on loan :s
lets hope 1 youth player will come in: kerlon, mascherano, torres, barzagli(already 25 i think but he is great and i think JUVE will buy em :s ),...
Another quasi boldman... and another Giuseppe :D
Vaffanculo perdenti :devf:
henry has confirmed that he will sign contract extension with arsenal, so we can all forget about henry!
we also need to consider the possible relegation for juve and hopefully we are not involved in the scandal. if juve is relegated and we are not, we can get juve players at good price.
we will be perfectly OK with or without sheva!

I don't know what Juve players we would go for but we would defiently get Gallas and Oddo as Juve were the only other team interested in going for them.
If juve get relegated we should look to use the oppertunity to really prepare our squad for the future as we will effictively be the only big italian team in the transfer market. Any player that wants to come to italy and win things will opt for us above all others.

vogel, dhorasoo, vieri, amoroso,... all those players are hjappy at milan, they couldn't get a contract so milan signs them, so they earn money on there old day...pfff
my question is: why do we spend our money on paying there salary???
only exeption is crespo(but was on loan)

looking at the four players mentioned there, seems to me calling them trash is VERY harsh.
Firstly, Vieri didn't perform, but with the huge pressure placed on him, I really am not too surprised, considering he should have been a squad player and little else.
As for Vogel, he hasn't had a bad season at all and in fact has been admiral in the midfield when called on.
Amoroso hasn't really had any chance to prove his worth and really as fourth choice, I don't expect anyone better. He did well back in Brazil and has been very respectful to Milan, despite knowing his chances are very limited.
Dhorasoo was a good buy. On top of that, he proved that he was a better player than many thought. Add to this he performed very well for us when he played and add that he was always very happy at Milan, and in the end showed great respect to the club, personally, I think that was more than just a reasonable transfer, I thought he was a very good transfer.
Some people have to realise that not every player we buy can be a superstar. Doing this will not only cause financial hell, but it will probably have a negative impact on the current players at Milan.
Favalli I doubt is brought into strengthen the side, where for at least a year in the LB we'll be pretty covered with Serginho and possibly Jankulovsky, Kaladze or Maldini. Favalli is there to come in if we need a solid player to play at LB. I remember Pancaro's transfer being lauded a few years ago, but nowerdays I never see people complain about it.
The club isn't stupid, the management can see what we need and buy accordingly. We are not Chelsea, and do not spend ridiculous amounts on some overrated player, we buy smartly and do what we need to stay amongst the stongest, nothing more, nothing less.

Favalli is past his prime & he just wants 2 make money now. Wat better place than 2 do it a Milan. Hopefully we can trade him plus cash 4 Oddo.

What player you prefer: Favalli or Grosso?
Answer me a few little questions. Lets say we get Grosso, we spend quite a fair amount for him too, because he's of good quality (and not a player I'd reject).
Now where do we go from there, we've spent a fair amount on a transfer that wasn't too necessary, on a player who is similar to Serginho, in that he's attacking minded. So when we need a solid LB to fill that role once every often (for example when Cafu is out RB), who must we turn to? We know we can't rely solely on Maldini or Kaladze to do this regularly, both are technically CB now.
And what about the other transfers we must consider? Firstly, there's the possibility of Sheva leaving, and if he does, we'll need a fair few funds to try and replace him. Then we need to consider the strengthening of the midfield, which we will need some funds for, especially if we're looking to get someone fairly decent.
Then of course, there's the central defence and probably RB, where we need to get some new players to sure up the side/squad.
The LB problem isn't a great concern at this point, as we're adequately covered for a regular LB in Serginho (who has been outstanding there this past season) and possibly Janku (though Carlo clearly favours to play him in the midfield) if need be. Having a solid and experienced back-up isn't going to be bad for us, as once in a while, we need to defend and having a more defensive player will be better equipped to do that.
Also, consider Juve at this point. The chances of stars leaving them are VERY high, and a certain Zambrotta (who can play both wing backs and wings) seems a more tastier option than Grosso.

You made very reasonable remarks, 1983, but to follow your line of thinking, I can say that we have enough cover for the LB position even before the arrival of Favalli, because Maldini and Kaladze, despite their current status as CB's, can do well (specially Maldini, of course) as LB's. So in fact I really don't get the point of picking either Favalli or Grosso, but If I was to choose one of them, I'll certainly go for the later.
Regarding the other transfers, I agree with you: we need to strenghten our retaguard and midfield.

Well, I can understand why you would pick Grosso, and given the right circumstances, I think most people would. However, I don't think in this case it was as easy and cheap to pick up Grosso as it was Favalli, and to do so would probably have hampered our overall transfer market.
Bringing in Favalli wasn't costly and was very easy, simply done to strengthen the overall squad and ease the pressure on Maldini and Kaladze.

Well as far as I know Favalli was a genuine CB and he has only started playing as a LB a year or so ago. I might be wrong but I think he went with Italy's squad for Euro 2004 as a CB
Favalli played left back at Lazio for years.
