Milan ponder Thuram snatch Tuesday 20 June, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan are being associated with a surprising move for Juventus and France stopper Lilian Thuram.
The defender may be coming towards the end of his Turin stint if they are demoted to Serie B for sporting fraud this summer.
Reports in the peninsula suggest that the Rossoneri are ready to profit from what would be a mass exodus of footballing talent by snapping up the 34-year-old.
Boss Carlo Ancelotti is a massive admirer of the veteran who he did have at his disposal while in charge of Parma.
It’s understood that the two clubs could include Christian Abbiati as part of any proposed transfer deal.
The goalkeeper spent last term on loan at the Stadio Delle Alpi and his agent has recently revealed that he would be ready to remain on a permanent basis.
Thuram, also recently linked with Lyon and Monaco, has so far declined to answer any questions on his future at Juventus.
When asked during a Germany 2006 media conference, he simply stated: “Juventus? Juventus who?”
Milan are looking for a new centre-back after they lost Dutchman Jaap Stam who has joined Ajax on a two-year deal.
well...another short term recruitment.....wat you guys opinion??
a great short term solution
for 1 or 2 year
Silly rumour...next time http://www.milanmania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20228
bad move, im waiting for Gallas.
Oh God, shall I give up hope of being surprised by Milan signing some genuine young talent or at least youngish. :irritate:
this is stupid. if we were to sign a old player, at least make sure its a great one. thuram is no longer good enough for us, next.

I hope it's only a stupid rumour, 'cause it will be a very bad move.
thuram is still an excellent player, but i would rather go for other players at this stage, mainly gallas

i agree with mk, of course I would rather see Gallas or Alex come to Milan but Thuram would still be a good, short term solution. Don't know why people are so scared by this rumour, it's not like he is gonna become the heart of our defence for the next 10 years or so. Should he come, it would be only because he is still a very good defender and will be very, very cheap. I would rather have him than a 40 yo Billy, for instance ... sorry Billy, but you are getting a bit too old, man ;)
i agree with u that costacurta is getting old .. thuram replacing costacurta would be great but .. do you think that a player like thuram would come to Milan to stay in the bench .. i don't think so he probably next season going to be in a french club .. lyon or monaco cuz i see these teams have conact with thuram
zlatanov
20-06-2006, 09:26
that's a very likely possibility too. If he has any desire to come play for us he would well aware that he won't be strarting every single game. I don't think he can play RB anymore as he's lacking speed, but he could be used in a good number of games to relief some pressure off nesta. remeber Last season how nesta was often having muscular problems as a result of too many games played. He also had to play when he was obviously tired and not at his best. Now with Stam gone, we basically don't have a player - apart from Simic and Billy - who could take Nesta's place as a right CD.
I think this is why Carlo would want Thuram - with Gallas' transfer still on the rocks, Thuram would be a pretty cheap soltuion for a nesta double. And I am sure that Thuram himself understands that if he wants to play for a top club, at the age of 33 or so he could hardly ask for a guaranteed starting spot.

A question for the old farts fan club: name a SINGLE +30 footballer that can be considered as highlight till today on the WC.
I'd answer your question, but that would automatically make me a member of your so called "old farts fan club"...
if you expect me to remain silent like I have done since you came back, I politely warn you... you better start writing like an adult...

Name a single one, Sant, please, with the exception of keepers.
You just don't get it, do you?
That's not the point... I will not answer to you...
(on top of everything, now you limit the possible answer excluding keepers, like if they were not important)
GRE-NO-LI
20-06-2006, 12:51
So you CAN'T name even a single one... and that's positive, in fact, because that means you are following the games with care and awareness, so you can see that all the individual highlights on the WC have less than 30...
oh, man, you can't see beyond your nose... I'm fed up with you... for you, highlights are the important thing... the guys scoring the goals, and you will say "Torres has scored 3 goals" "Rosicky was fenomenal" blah, blah...
If now I tell you other player names, you will say, exclude them and list me Strikers...
you're too squared and obvious, I gain nothing by talking to you, so I'll leave it here.

To be honest with you, so far, I can't say there is even a single player I have been overly and jaw-droppingly impressed with. There are a number of interesting players but in one game they are great, in the next less so, so "highlight" of the WC, not a chance, as it is just too early to tell. But to name one - Figo, easily one of Portugal's best players, if not teh best, so far.
But there is also one other factor - players over 30 are less likely to impress at WC after a long and exhausting season with their clubs. Also the WC is usually played in very hot temps, and that makes it even more dif for 30+ players to impress.
However, what we should concern ourselves with is not how they play in the hot summer WC games but during the regular season when tems are much more "bareable" and they, the players, aren't as tired.
So, your attempt to try to prove your "babies only" point isn't as foolproof as you'd like to think.

Well, that's a highly subjective matter, Hitt, and I wouldn't list any players you quoted as highlights on the current WC.
Here's my list:
Fernando Torres
Robben
Pirlo
Rosicky
Saviola
Fabregas
Riquelme
Klose
Mascherano
Yaya Touré
ALL of them with less than 30...
Sorin ! :D
Crespo,
Ayala,
Larsson,
Poborsky,
Koller (until he was injured)
Valente,
Costinha,
Petit,
Young-Chul Kim,
Senna,
Avery John,
Dennis Lawrence,
Jawhar Mnari,

Well... anyone can think whatever he wants...
To all the old farts fan club members: I also believe that players over 30 are washed out and useless, and to make things worse, they occupy the places that should belong to the younger and more promising stars, which greatly reduces the watchability of this wonderful event. I think it is time for FIFA to take some action to change World Cup officially to U-30 and impose strict age restriction. Out of leniency, we probably can set another smaller-size senior event for over-aged players like Nesta, Cannavaro, Hislop, Figo, Crespo, Cafu, Beckham. :yuck: they disgust me.. :yuck:
Xudong, how old are you? what do you do for a living?
Grenoli, you asked for players over 30 that have had a good world cup so far ... i duely obliged. That is all ...
and out of leniency Xudong i will not tell you what i think of your post.

I'd be funny if I (being still in my 20's) proposed something similar to your WC age restriction... no posters over 30 in MM... then we could get rid of all this crap you're writing... in Gre-no-li's words, you both be "old farts", you'd be useless, and unemployed based on your own criteria...
However, I'd be insulting many other posters who are over 30, and are smart enough to make intelligent comments... so, we're back to the point... age is not the most important factor, neither is talent... it's a combination of all this, with love for ones work and good attitude... and I don't see you displaying it right now...

I think your biggest mistake is to create "old farts fan club". :D Whoever is defending old dudes would become a member automatically. :dcool: That is not fair and this is a forum for free and fair opining. Check out this statement: "To those stupid people who disagree with me, I hereby kindly ask this question... ". No one would want to disagree with you otherwise they would be stupid, according to the logic here. :pr78: And I wouldn't call that fair. :)
well, back to the topic of older players. I like young and good players too. Between two players of same quality, younger age means possibly a longer period around. but that's just theoretically speaking, Milan is a club of success, so like many other big clubs, they don't want to take any risk. They want to have established stars. I know that we have probably overdone a bit, but to push it to the other extreme is simply what I don't want to see. And 30 is certainly a golden age looks to me, in any department. (not that because I am 30, :D I am not a player.)
back to the topic of older players on this WC. I actually think World Cup is especially such a place for them to shine. More and more of them will stand out as the tournament marches on. I would rather think that they are reserving their energy for the coming bigger games. I can't help thinking if Maldini (or even Costacurta) was still playing in the Azzuri, Italy wouldn't be in such a predicament after what Zaccardo did. but of course for the selfish sake of Milan, I don't want that to happen.
and back to the original topic, Thuram. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with us, knowing Galliani. And I agree with some members here, he would be a useful addition short-term speaking, but I was hoping that the departure of Shevchenko would trigger a drastic change in our transfer policy. And that is, I don't mind having Thuram, but I want Gallas or Lugano (why isn't anybody talking about him any more?).
Cheers, :)

if juve went down to c/b, we've all been saying that we want zambrotta, buffon, trez or whoever.. but there's 1 player that none of us have mentioned yet and i think he would be an amazing signing.. he also is having the best world cup from all the players at Juve.. I really think he would fit in well in D alongside Nesta. Im talking about Fabio Cannavaro. I think he has at least 3 more good season ahead of him, so why not?
actually he has been mentioned, but im also surprised no one mentioned mutu, i think he can be a hit here, i always wanted him at milan

I agree with Gre-no-li. I think in general the club has done well with recruitments over the past 4 yrs, which include Seedorf, kaka, nesta, and gila. We need to go young. We need to get good young players such as Diego Lugano of Sao Paolo or snatch Mexes away from Roma rather than go for Thuram and Favalli. I know Kala Kaladze is not the most appreciated in these forums but I think he was one of our very best last yr and will get better as he keeps on playing as a CB. We got him young and his perseverence paid off. I don't want any of the frenchmen in Milan, including Gallas. He is already 29, and I haven't liked his attitude at the world cup. I would rather take chances on young players with potential such as Colocinni (who bombed by the way) than older players. Thuram and Gallas will not be 1st choice this season, because with all due respect, they are not better at this pt in time than Kaladze. Also, I know it is easy to discard old players, but the great captain will be back and healthy this coming season. Let's not forget that he was playing at an extremely high level before he suffered his injury in December. We need a youngster who can learn and absord what it is to be a great milan player.

i agree completely with mk here. Gallas is a much better defender than Kaladze. I like Kaladze alot as a person, but the times i saw him he was all over the place.
Gallas is a great CB with pace and commitment, exactly the kind of player we need. I would start him with Nesta as our CB pairing.
ramo23 you completely contradicted yourself, you say Milan should go for youngsters and not the likes of Thuram or Favalli as they are too old. Then you say that we shouldn't discard old players and to remember the oldest of them all (save Billy) Maldini, which means you think old players can play a part, which means people like Thuram et al can play here. You have a crossed wire there i think.
Perhaps he just prefers Milan to sign young players (while realizing that the older ones at Milan are quite good).
If we sign Oddo as an attacking RB, maybe Carlo fill put Kaladze on the LB as an defensive BL who can move to CB so it could look like this.
-----nesta--gallas---kaladze---
oddo--gattuso-pirlo-jankulovski
----------kaka--------
------CF-------CF-------
This would be a solution when we are attacking, meaning we can change formations fast and making 4-3-1-2 into 3-5-2, which could work brilliantly.

I dont think he was contradicting himself at all. We have great veteran players in our squad, i.e. Maldini, Billy. So why go out and sign more veterans? I think what ramo23 was trying to say is that we should sign promising young talent and let them learn and develop under Maldini and Billy. Personally, I think that's a great idea.
Secondly, it is open to debate as to who is better--Kaladze or Gallas. I dont know how you can conclusively say that Gallas is better. With the exception of his first couple of games at centerback, I dont think Kaladze has put a foot wrong. If you asked me, I would be more than happy with him starting as our centerback next to Nesta. But in the end, it's only a matter of opinion. Who knows? If Gallas does come our way, we might be able to establish for sure who is the better centerback :)

my thought too. I think he ridiculed himself by claiming that he was better than Nesta, especially he failed to prove it later on. :ilol: Just like Hakan Sukur was so annoyed that people from Turkey called him "van Basten II", and made a fuss "why van Basten can't be called 'Hakan Sukur II'." :rotfl:

I like Juan, he has been solid in the WC, not so was ujfalusi, Barzagli seems too tall and unstable to play at Milan (not STAM). Kompany?
Juan or Gallas all the same to me.
:) Ofcourse, Juan could play RCB or R Fulllback, but I for one would never want to see Thuram play full back. (or Gallas for that matter =)

But isn't that playing with five defenders and rotating Seedorf, a thing Carlo never, ever, ever does? Hehe. Just joking, I like it but for some games only, Seedorf is better than Jank in LM.
Lol , pls not Juan.
He doesn't have enough defending skills to play for Milan , not even to be a sub.
Against Ghana , Gyan really made him suffer ,there was not 1 descent tackle by Juan all match. :wallbang:
Kompany , great talent no doubt.
But it's already too late , he's off to Hamburg.
Maybe we can bring him to Milan in a year or 2 when he will have gained some more experience.
Barzagli and Gallas seem great defenders to me.
Barzagli seems too tall and unstable to play at Milan (not STAM)
Uhm , I think your mistaking Barzagli for someone else?
He's only about 186cm , for the record Nesta is 187cm and Stam is 191cm. ;)
I don't know, Berzagli seemed unstable too me, seriously I was thinking he could fall over any second now when I was watching the match against Australia. He might not be that tall but he just seems soooo unstable to me. Anyways, he's not Stam in any way. just to think he could replace the great Stam .... well .... :p231:
Juan? he is fine, Brazil leaves a lot of space because they attack all the time and their defenders are exposed, more so because Ghana -- very very fast.
:gonova:
Lucio seemed to do a better job than Juan imo.
But Lucio won't (92,98502% sure) come to Milan.
since youre mentioning brazilian defenders i think the best one is alex of psv, he should be alot cheaper than anyone youve mentioned aswell as lyons cris since he hasnt been called up to the selecao which i find very weird
Yeah, agreed. What is the deal with Alex? Was he even called up to play for Brazil? He should be starting for them IMO.
We need a tall defender. Whats there to stop Chelski from kicking long balls from defence to Ballack and Ballack outing them down to Shevs feet? Or Crouch? Hehe :) Maybe Gallas was The One to tie up the tall man with his agressivness not his height.....he would be 10 times better than Juan, you are right. Thuram would, then, be just a tall person, not a quality defender. As i offically don't think there will be any revolutions in our back line this term I wont get into it..but: Janku(Zambrotta)-Sandro-Madauro-Dani Alves?
The question is if Kaladze inspires confidence or not :)
