Many of us have critisized it, me less than some others though but will this improve it much?
Last paragraph is interesting too.
---------
In Berlin today (6 July 2006), three days before the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, FIFA presented the revised FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The new method will be applied immediately after this year's FIFA World Cup™, with the first new FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to be published on 12 July. "We have acknowledged the need for a substantial revision. I am convinced that our experts have come up with a satisfactory solution for a new way of calculating the ranking. We are aware that it is difficult to meet everybody's expectations, but are confident that the new system will provide an accurate measure of the strength of each of our member associations," said Blatter.

Since its introduction in August 1993, the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking has become a regular part of international sports reports and an important indicator for FIFA's 207 member associations to find out where their respective teams stand in world football and how they are progressing.

Nevertheless, the increasingly high profile of the world ranking also attracted some criticism indicating that its calculation formula was too complicated. Therefore, in 2005, under the chairmanship of Michel Platini (France) and Ángel María Villar Llona (Spain), the FIFA Technical and Development Committee and the FIFA Football Committee decided to revise the ranking in order to simplify the way in which it is calculated.

A multinational group comprising FIFA staff and external experts was subsequently formed to find a new procedure for drawing up the world ranking. Extensive tests and assessments were then carried out, which - following a number of presentations - reached their conclusion at the end of 2005.
Transparency and simplicity - the key principles guiding the revision - have been combined with sporting criteria and statistical requirements to establish the new and simplified method of calculation that the FIFA Executive Committee ratified at its meeting in Leipzig, Germany, on 7 December 2005.

The most important change to the calculation of the ranking is that it will no longer take into account the last eight years of results but only the last four. At the same time, all of the other factors previously taken into account (result, importance of match, strength of opponents, regional strength, number of matches considered) were tested, analysed and, in some cases, totally revised. In fact, two of the factors that were previously used (goals scored and home advantage) will no longer have any impact on the ranking.

Next year, the official website of the football's world governing body, FIFA.com, will also offer an online tool that will make it possible to carry out hypothetical calculations for all teams based on the consolidated database of FIFA's Information Services Department.

We won the World Cup but we're still not ranked first. What did I expect? I don't pay much attention to these foolish rankings--sorry, it reeks of nothing more than a popularity contest between a bunch of old farts in some smoke filled room debating games from the past umpteen years--but I did see the ones before the WC and saw the US at 4 or 5 and Italy at 14. Made no sense then, makes even less now!!! :dontkn: :dontkn:

I do agree with Rez tho on that last paragraph--people can tinker around and figure out rankings....only, of course, to find out Fifa does it all differently. Oh....can you tell I think very little of Fifa these days??? :web:

K*cking Fifa did many rediculous things recently:
Zidane won Addidas golden ball because he advertises for Addidas.
Italy can not win the No. 1 pos in Coca Cola ranking, you know why? because Italy shirts have blue colour which is the Pepsi's colour while Coke is red.

anyone any plausible explanation why england went up to 5th!?

Because FIFA no longer overestimate the importance of friendlies and only the last 4 years are now used. Englands record over that time in major tournaments is:

lost to eventual winners in 2002
technically undefeated in 2004
technically undefeated in 2006

Before you ask, technically undefeated because FIFA accept that shootouts are lotteries, so they now consider games that go to penalties as a loss for neither team.

Looking at the new list it is a lot more realistic than it was before, though it may still need a little fine tuning.

Now it's better than it used to be... still think that winning the WC, and having Brasil kicked out in early rounds, should send Italy to #1.

I doubt it'll be too long before Italy go to number 1, at the moment Brazil's world cup win in 2002 is keeping them to but whatever points they recieved for that will be wiped from the record when the 4 years is up. Im not sure when the cut off point is though, end of the month? end of the season? maybe end of the year?

we'll find out soon enough :hopefull:

But your football did not exactly set the world alight this year and ye have recently struggled to beat Paraguay, Trinidad & Togbago, Ecaudor, drew with Sweden, Austria and lost to Northern Ireland in competitive matches hardly the form of the 5th best team in the world!

Also I thought ye lost to France in 2004.

Well no matter how much FIFA revise these lists i doubt they will ever take into account *how* a team wins, the important thing is that they do win ;)

In years to come i doubt anyone will care that Italy scraped past Australia and the 10 man striker-less Czechs, or drew with the 9 men of America. They will only remember that they won the tournament in the end

You're right about the France defeat but what i meant was as far as FIFA are concerned England weren't knocked out of the competitions, they lost on what they now view a technicality (albeit a very painful one for those who suffer it :( )
