View Full Version : Is Seria A dead as a major league?

With huge clubs like Juve, Lazio and the Viola all relegated.

With some of Italy's best players not even playing in Italy any more i.e. Canna, Zambrotta (Reportedly), Cassano and even Maresca says he prefers Spain. Probably more to follow him.

With other players like Sheva, Thuram, Viera etc all set to leave aswel. thats only this season!!!

With Seria A already losing big players to Spain in the past i.e. Zidane and Ronaldo. Now even the EPL is attracting players like Ballack and the likes of Daniel Alves prefer Liverpool to Milan for God's sake. :rollani:

With Capello having gone to Spain and one of Italy's other premiere managers (Lippi) rumoured to go abroad aswel. To tell you the truth, apart from Milan I dont want to watch any of it.

With young Italians being practically stolen from the likes of Parma i.e. Rossi for Man U and Lupolli for Arsenal.

Is there any thing left of Seria A, can it even compare with la liga and the EPL anymore?

It's in crisis, no one can deny that, but not dead...

I see some good things happening, like Torino coming back to Serie A...

I think that historic clubs like Genoa, Napoli, Torino, Verona and I may be missing one or two more need to be in A... and now Juve, Lazio and Fiorentina need to get back...

there are too many little teams in serie A right now... and too few big ones...

Good points, but as a Milan fan right now I feel sick! I never wanted Juve to get relegated, in fact I wanted them to get stronger. Them getting stronger would mean we have to aswel. Unfortunately, we seem to be playing in an Italian equivalent of the dutch league this year and Galliani hiding behind the shadows will make secret deals for sh!t players like Tomassi or someone.

This whole thing will have a negative impact on Milan.

What a gut-wrenchingly negative post.

-Italy's World Cup winning team was comprised entirely of players from Serie A.

-Juve's case is different. Zambrotta and Canna had to go, they had no choice. But it does not mean that Italian players in the future will leave.

-Cassano was an overweight, childish brat. No one in Italy wanted him. He went to Spain and is virtually lost.

- Keep in mind Fiorentina were in Serie C a few years ago. Lazio have had financial problems for a while

-For every Zidane and Ronaldo that leaves there is also a Nedved and Adriano present.

-Capello has coached in Spain before, when the Italian league was in its pomp.

-Out of all the major players leaving Juve, no one has even wanted to go to England.

-Can Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal attract top players NOW? No. Only Chelsea can. Look at Liverpool for example? Who have they bought lately that has been high-profile? Everyone wants to leave Man U it seems. Arsenal cannot afford anyone.

-Rossi and Lupoli are two examples ffs. What an over-reaction to say that youth is being stolen...what about Foggia for example who is at Milan. 99% of the young talent still plays in Italy.

-Some of Spain's best players also play abroad: Garcia, Alonso, Fabregas...does that mean the Spanish league is in terminal decline? Ballack is a 30-year-old (IMO slightly overrated) who went to Chelsea cause of a fat pay cheque.

- With Juve temporarily gone and bound to be in a period of recovery until at least 2008...we still have 2 major economic powerhouses in Serie A- Inter and Milan. How is this diff than Spain (Real and Barca). Have Valencia or Deportivo been linked with any players? No. Man U are now saddled with debts, Liverpool do not have that much money, Arsenal, as aforementioned, are simply unable to afford many players. So really it is Chelsea that is the club ready to buy anyone.

I can only see good come out of this calciopoli crisis:

1) Milan-Juve cartel is broken
2) There will be more transperency in the system
3) Little clubs like Chievo and Palermo will get to taste the Champions League giving them a chance to compete financially

Italian football will suffer in the short run. But in the long run it will continue to be counted amongst the big 3.

Yup very negative, but thats the way Im feeling right now.

Whatever the circumstances of players, managers etc leaving the fact is they are leaving Seria A. I do agree with most of what you say,Im definately being negative, but Im just feeling a bit down right now.

Adriano is no Ronaldo and Nedved is no Zidane although Nedved is a truely world class player. Italy will need Cassano if they want to defend their title, he is an arrogant little sh!t, but thats what will make him actually perform unlike certain Italian number 10s provided he loses some weight. But these are whole different conversations.

Good points, especially about Spain, but their two big clubs will probably dominate the CL this year. Your final point about Italian football having to clean up its act is what everyones hoping for, but its certainly not guaranteed. All we can do is hope.

'dead' is pretty strong a word. I wouldn't say this league is dead, defintely not right after its national team won the world cup.

it is painful to have such experience. I always wished bad on juventus, but to see them going down and collapse this time unsettles me still. I was even a bit sympathetic on them, until recent sour episodes between the two clubs. I started to hate them again. :D

I heard that France was claiming a CL berth from Italy. funny they are looking for every chance to revenge. :)

I understand man...I am not feeling so hot myself.

But this situation is entirely Italian. In the 80s it was the same, maybe it is worse now. In the backdrop of a World Cup triumph rather than looking forward, Italian football is deep into revisionism.

I think it was a long time coming to tell you the truth. But honestly once the likes of Juve, Fiorentina, Napoli etc. come back up, I can see a period of prosperity.

While it is bad for Canna and Zambrotta to leave, they do so amidst very unique circumstances, circumstances that hopefully will not come around again.

Italian football has many problems:

- tv rights are an exclusive thing
- financial meltdown of smaller clubs
- match-fixing
- outdated stadiums
- racism

but on the pitch it is hugely successful (Milan won CL in 2003, finalists in 2005, and Italy won the World Cup in 2006).

I know you cite Real as a club that is getting better. BUt are they? They have done f* all for the past three seasons. Honestly, do you think if Zambrotta had a choice between Milan and Liverpool, he would pick Liverpool?

The circumstances right now make it all very hard to digest. But in a couple of years I can see good come out of this.

Do you honestly think Chelsea being in the premier league is a good thing? They buy all the players and prices are inflated there. As a result clubs have to hike up wages to keep players.

What about Glazer bringing debt to United?

Every league has its issues.

Yeah I tried to change the title so it didnt include the word dead, but I couldnt.

I know what you mean about being unsettled about juve. I even used to support inter scum in the CL just so Seria A would improve and get respect for its four teams. Obviously I never wanted them to get further than us

Well to be honest....serie a seems to have lost its appeal for some time now. It used to be the greatest league in the world but that hasnt been the case over the last couple of years. Most of the upcoming and big names have prefered to move to clubs like Barca, Chelsky and Real Madrid because they offer great financial deals and there seems to be more attraction compared to the serie a. We used to see big name players like Ronaldo leave barca to join clubs in serie a in the past but things have changed now...

You have players like Sheva, Ballack, Canna, Zambro and a host of others have left serie a to join other leagues in europe.

The fact that Italy won the world cup could have been a major boast to the serie a considering the fact that all the players involved in the italian squad played their club football in italy. Lets not mention there were a couple of players in the french squad like Thuram and Vieira that played in Italy as well.

Well with this stupid match fixing charges and the fact that other italian clubs like Milan, Inter and Roma have so far failed to sign major talent from the clubs that have gone down is once again a major blow to serie a clubs.

It will take 3-4 years for Serie A to rebuild its status as 1 of the top leagues in the world (if not the best).

I think we can all agree that the Serie A has it's problems, and I happen to think they are things that could have been and should have been properly addressed before they became the huge issues they are now. :dontkn:

But....I also happen to think that other leagues saw how successful Italian teams were on the global front and started to copy us. Look at how many foreign players are playing in Italy, learning our game. Look at how alot of our players are being chased by foreign teams....to UP their own levels of play! The business of soccer/football/calcio is highly competitive and now we have all the major teams wanting the same pool of top-notch players, and there's just not enough to go around.

i voted yes, but hopefully it will reincarcenate soon and it should, im sick of seeing milan not doing enough on the transfer market and right now barca, chelsea, arsenal, and even real madrid have a better chance of blowing us away ... juve are out, so thats 50% of serieA inactive ... were left with inter and roma as our only hopes of holding our heads, not that i would be proud since all i care for is milan and having inter winning things is even more painful to me than barca or real or chelsea winning them ... but being frank, inter will always be inter and despite a couple of good signings theyre not as good as the best, roma not yet too... so for the time being and until berlusconi takes his head out of hs ass serieA is dead

i don't know if serie A is dead yet. but a quick look at the milan team right now will show u that the team is a little limp. our biggest asset - kaka - is being bid to death from all sides by vultures like Chelsea and Real Madrid. We really need to pick up some steam on the transfer market

I wouldnt call serie a dead. Milan is still a power house in my opinion, they lost sheva cuz of his wife wanted him to go, we lost rui costa but hes 34, so not that big of a lost, and jaap stam is gone. So Milan roster includes, Kaka,Gila,Cafu,Pirlo,Gattuso, inzaghi, sergino, maldini, dida,NESTA, dun forget they young talent. 15 points = 5 games. not that big of a whole. Juve Lazio and forentina are in serie b. its a shame that cannavaro n zambrotta left, but now its gives the teams such as Roma,Livorno, inter to make some noise, n lets not forget that these teams have some huge big time players on there team, no serie a to a blow, but not dead no where close.

as great as maldini is to us milan fans, he's on his last legs. he's still goign to be a motivational force on the field but as far as outpacing young gun strikers, forget about it. same with cafu. If we can keep kaka, we'll be in sort of good shape.

It should be noted that out of all the teams in the world cup, only Italy and Saudi Arabia picked a squad of entirely home-based players.

Italy won it, not a single world cup winner played outside Serie A.

It isn't quite the force it was though, but that was mainly due england being a weakened league due to the european ban, prior to that Liverpool dominated in a way unseen these days but the european ban caused the EPL to fall below the standard of the scottish league, it was a long way back but they're here now.

The other thing that made it strong was, out of the the big money leagues, Italy had the best home players. England and Spain have been good but the former lacked real attacking talent and the latter defensive. The eu rule has made that a non-issue and slowly things have balanced out.

I see it as a cycle. Next season it will probably be impossible for Fio and Lazio to get promoted and they might even get relegated further if not managed well like juvr. They will also take potential players down with them. For at least 4 years Italy won't be able to put a good show at thr european competitions! Every body hates Italy and its teams (specially Milan because of our dominace in europe).

This thing will further hurt the NT because all players will be scattered across europe and won't make it to the NT as often as they did. It may not be a complete end but certainly a 5 year halt!

Voted no, it's gonna lose a lot of it's umph but there is no crisis... la liga is nice to watch, epl has chelsea to follow if yer a championship manager fan :) but i've always believed that the serie A has always and will always be a more tactical and technical league...
