OFFICIAL A.C. MILAN COMMUNICATION
7/28/2006
MILAN - A.C. Milan comunicates that they have acquired Parma FC defender Daniele Bonera, born 1981, on a contract until June 30, 2010.
The player will be presented to the press at 13.00 on Saturday at Milanello.
Welcome Bonera!
there he is... 25 years old, right back...
now "those who keep asking for youngsters" can complain about other stuff, and let
Oddo, Alves, etc. (and most importantly, CAFU!!!) alone... :haha:

i'm pleased with this move... finally our management has made a good signin'... and guess what? there wasn't any rumours... therefore i believe that Milan has already made many private enquires prior to the appeal... and the result of the appeal was the final hurdle before more transfers come in... just like i noted in a previous post...

Bonera's primary role is a RB... but he has played as a CB & LB before...

Im sorry but i dont agree with many people that this is a good move. Bonera was good in the 03-04 season and thats it, then he disappeared for the next 2 seasons. He is very versatile and thats his only advantage. He is not good and no im not being a pessimist. I really hope he nothing more than a backup player.

Parma almost disappeared after 03/04 season, hitman8.
i dunno. was promising then looked very average.
he's a known AC milan fan by the way.

I think this is great news. Bonera has been a quality player for several years and I think he will be very useful for Milan.
Welcome and good luck, Daniele!

I agree that at his current form he is hardly at Milan's level but he is relatively young and has shown that he has the talent and potential to become an excellent defender. I am sure that under the guidance of Billy, Maldini, Nesta he will improve a lot and will be even better than his best days of 2-3 years ago.
I still think, though, that we need a cafu-type of RB as Bonera's game is pretty defense-oriented.

thanks a bunch :)
How much did we get him for ?
As already mentioned his versatility has won him a place with us as has the fact that he's Italian ( for the CL rules ). The fact he also supported Milan as a kid means wearing our shirt could improve his performances.
Lets also look at who else we were supposed to get. Oddo, Lazio wanted way too much money for him. Doesn't mean we won't get him, but the chances are smaller now. Reveillere, after some stronger links around May we seem to have stopped all interest and we know Lyon would probably want alot of money for him. Alves, Liverpool had him but Sevilla kept asking for more money and it would take £12-13 million to get him. Gallas, was strongly linked with us and he wanted to come here, but Chelsea waved a mega contract in front of him and it seems only a matter of time before he signs the next 5 years of his life away to them.
I think Bonera is a good squad player and this may allow us to let Simic leave or use him as a make weight in another deal. Lets also think about money, if we got Bonera cheaply it will mean more money to spend on the better players we want.
If the price was right, this will be a good bit of business. Plus if the worst comes to the worst we can always sell him.

yep hitmanq8 is right to an extent. I do think Bonera can bring his game up a few notches though.

Unexpected signing but a welcome one indeed. Hasn't been too fantastic the last year or two, but bear in mind at 25 and under the guidance of Maldini, Billy and co, he could finally reach a level where he is a first team player at a club like Milan. Personally, I'm looking at him more for his use at RB, but his versatility is another welcomed addition.
Welcome Daniele :)

My points exactly. In the past 2 seasons he was an avreage player but his main advantage is that he's 24 not 34 like Favalli. I think he's better as a CB though (look at Kaladze, even Simic) as for a new Cafu, we need someone else.
Ok, Favalli and Bonera :pr115: We are showing the world the we mean business. If you have reached the age of 25 and base your career that you were promising when in highschool, then the so called potential might not be much more then a bluff. All in all my feeling is that we tried hard for Oddo, but didn´t want to pay so we settled for Bonera, which is what we do nowadays - we settle... We could have gotten a highly rated and offensive minded RB in Oddo but it would have meant that we needed to invest so instead we phoned Parma and they had a guy that they could easily "recommend". Some sources say that Simic went in the other way, but that is pure nonsense, since that would be something that Inter and Inter alone might have done.
Ok, so we now have Favalli and Bonera, all that is needed now is Ibra and Hello!!! Germany here I come, time for some cheep alcohol...
Milan get real now, please... so far :5milan:
If we look back to the recent squad that won the WC2006..then we have 2 other young players ;
Andrea Barzagli, birth May, 1981
Christian Zaccardo, birth December 1981
The rest are not too young anymore :
Alessandro Nesta, birth March 1976
Marco Materazzi, birth August 1973
Massimo Oddo, birth June 1976
Gianluca Zambrotta, birth February 1977
Fabio Cannavaro, birth September 1973
Fabio Grosso, birth November 1977
If we prefer to have another Italian defender then there are not too much of a choice ..or we can find from under 21 squad...
IMHO Barzagli is quite OK when he played once or twice to sub Materazzi (who actually sub Nesta) rather than Zaccardo who "scored" a brilliant goal onto Buffon's net :proud:
I think if we can get another 2 defenders and 2 good strikers would just adequate for the time being...plus Buffon would be even better....

he was out injured for a while last season also.. i renember he came on against us in the game where dida was rubbish... Bonera did look rusty then...
Mange has returned !! :wow::eek:
Welcome back :5ok:
AWESOME NEWS...its taken a couple years too long for this to happen in my opinion, but its an excellent acquistion.
Hes a young defender who`ll have hunger to be playing regurlaly for milan and also to force his way into the italy team. I think its really good signing.
I for one dont think he`ll play at right back, i think hes primarily seen as a center back and if need be can fill in at right back.
Finally!!! I was waiting for this for years, he is one of my fav players...
I just hope that he'll get chance to play...
The good thing is that Bonera can be affective as a CB also, but the ba dthink is that now we will have defensive RB on Gattuso's side. Of course, we all know our LB's are Jankulovski and Serginho. This looks like a copy of Stam, central defender that can play RB. But dont expect any great runs or crosses by this guy. On the defensive he is very good. Im pleased with this, good work Braida and Galliani. now get me Oddo! :)
this is amazing buy considering he was heavily linked with us one or two seasons ago and this season not even a rumour linked him to us! suddenly and quietly milan have announced that bonera signs for us! i am sure we buy him in cheap price(since he is not in the limelight recently), he is italian, young, former italian international, versatile , this is smart buy! welldone milan! welcome bonera!
i believe our buying season is almost over, probably only one new striker coming and thats all!

At least we have to some good news to cheer about, folks! Bonera is a good, very solid defensive RB, with lots of room to improve further his game. It is certainly a move on the right direction, I hope the board is finally getting back on track.
the board is always on track; it's only people demanding for unrealistic target that make the board on the wrong move.
hey, who has seen this transfer coming in this forum? Shouldn't we give the board some credit for the transfer, instead of taking it for granted?
What a pleasant surprise! I can't remember the last time we heard absolutely nothing about a signing and VOILA....there they were! I think Andrea Pirlo may have been the last "surprise" and seeing how well he's done :) maybe this fella will shine.
I know some of you have been skeptical of Bonera's talent but I think he was one of the best available options in the market (diplomatic statement). He is definitely the best available Italian defender after Juve refused to seel Zambrotta to us.
I firmly believe he has the talent and perhaps as a community us Milan fans should hope that the fact that he is a die-hard Milan fan put together with him getting to play alongside Cafu, Nesta, Maldini and the likes....he will become fantastic with Milan.
Welcome Daniele.....very happy to see you :) Now if we could somehow wave a magic wand and get Buffon and a decent striker to replace Andriy (impossible to do) we will be all set.

Well Done Milan!!!!
The deal cost only 2.5 M euros to Parma and 1.8 M euros yearly to Bonera till 2010.
It took only 1 morning to finalise this deal, and it happened when agent Tinti went to Milanello to talk about Pirlo's contract and during their chat he mentioned the possibility of signing Bonera, who in that moment was very close to deal with Inter.
Galiani and Braida without thinking not even for a moment, valuated the deal and phoned the sport director of Parma and talked about the price and the deal was reached.
Even Bonera was surprised, and when Galiani phoned him after lunch, at first he thought that it could be a joke.
This is the first derby won by Milan on Inter this season, and the guilt goes on Inter management who took too long to finalise, even when Mancini was constantly asking about him as he wished him in his team at all costs. Inter started dealing with Parma about Bonera 1.5 months ago.
Now after this deal, Milan goes head on Fernando Torres.

in some matches we could play a 3 man defence and 2 wing backs that can push forward alot more.

bonera-nesta-kaladze-jankulovski would be ok. But I like that part form Gazzetta: " Milan now moves for Torres..."
Personally I think it's a good signing, not great, just good. Better than Favalli without doubt. I think we need another 4 signings, 3 of which will improve the first team. We should make a concrete effort for Torres, and sign Crespo too. We need 4 quality strikers, and we only have 2. I'd like to Alex or Lugano join too, and then a STAR signing ala Buffon. Don't want Ibra, or anyone else off Juve. We also need to offload some players for good i.e. Dalla Bona, Borreillo, Amoruso, Simic, Favalli, Kalac, and have some youngsters promoted from the youth team. Heard good things about Piazza, Bloudek, Di Gennaro, & Weah JR.

bonera was ours 3th choice after zambrotta and oddo
If we llok at the way Milan replaced Stam ,we did it perfectly. We got almost the same player, only Italian and younger. CB and defensive RB that WILL develop in Milanello by another 20% for sure.

Even better than Stam. Will he be in our top 11 though, it's up to Ancelotti. I would put him in mine for sure.
What is going on here? Where is Paolo Maldini in all these line-ups? He can still play better than any of the players you mentioned in your preferred 11. He is also the only one out of our entire defence who can play well in all 4 positions (or as a sweeper).
Our best defence line-up for next season would not change from what we played at the end of last year and IT IS A FANTASTIC back four...so I'm not concerned:
Cafu-Nesta-Kaladze-Maldini or Carlo may opt to swap Kaladze and Il Capitano
With Favalli, Simic, Billy, Bonera, Jankulovski and Serginho all able to back-up the main 4, our defence is good to go for now. A little old....but still good to go.
I shall transport myself to the Buffon thread now....... :)

In terms of retaguard, we still need to replace a ex-footballer named Cafu.
In terms of retaguard, we still need to replace a ex-footballer named Cafu.

Bonera is certainly a fine transfer, I'm glad with it.

I think you're judging him on his team's WC showing as a whole. He played well in the first couple of games and let's not forget he was still awesome last year. While I do agree it is time to replace him, but my personal opinion is that Cafu will still be better in the 2006-07 season than a certain Massimo Oddo would have been.
I think we have till the summer of 2007 to find Cafu's replacement and not another week or two as some folks (not you) may think...
He is still one of the top 5 fullbacks in the world IMHO.
FORZA PENDOLINO!

I disagree. to begin with, he was far from awesom last year, he was mostly injuried to begin with. He don't have the ability to beat players anymore, he doesn't even try. I would go on and say we will have a serious motivation problem with him. His last year in Roma showed as much and I can see it in him both as for last season and also for the world cup. He will run for sure, run run and not to much else.

DOes he chew gum when he plays, cause his mouth looks like it's chewin' something...
He is getting old, we need a new RB
Well OK....I can't argue with your opinion Chris. But fact remains, it is highly unlikely that Milan will look to replace him this summer.
I suppose Ancelotti's options should Cafu start playing bad would be to put Bonera, Simic or Billy @ right back. Or maybe Paolo Maldini can start playing right back in his penultimate season :)
MALDINI-NESTA-KALADZE-JANKULOVSKI
or
MALDINI-BONERA-NESTA-KALADZE
don't look too shabby :)
Cafu wasn't signed for defensive qualities, but to give us an option on the right when att esp against smaller teams, as that's what let us down in the 0203 league season as Simic couldn't give the option. Cafu was a success in 0304 in the league, but our CL dreams went up in smoke as he couldn't handle playing against a proper winger ala Fran. The way I see it is if he can't offer anything going forward drop him, coz that's his main quality. Only Brocchi or Janku can offer offensive running from the right now from defenders, then we'd have to use Foggia, or Gourcoff as subs or change the formation, which is another thing Carlo needs to do. Remember the start of the 0405 season with his talk of playing 3 defenders occasionally. Not once did we do that to overload our opponents in midfield.
Bonera is now better solution than Cafu on the RB. Cafu is a true legend, and a great person, but he cant play at highest level any more. He can be a sub when we need more attacking minded RB, but nothing more. But im afraid Carlo could put him in front of Bonera, hope im vrong in this.
Im not too happy about this one. We will find him to be a sub for Cafu when I was expecting someone who would relegate cafu to the bench.
He showed plenty of promise a few years ago, hasnt lived upto it at all but good luck to him.

Bonera shocked by move
30.7 || webmaster
Football Italia
New Milan man Daniele Bonera has admitted that his sudden move to the Rossoneri did catch him by surprise.
The 25-year-old was training with Parma only yesterday until he was told of his switch by his representative.
“My move was a shock,” said Bonera at his official unveiling. “It was like a bolt of lighting out of a clear blue sky.
“I received a phone call from my agent while I was in training with Parma and I honestly thought it was a joke,” he smiled.
“But seeing as I have always been a Milan fan, I just jumped in my car without even discussing terms over the length of the contract or my salary.
“This is a dream move for me.”
Bonera has been linked with a switch to a big club for some time, but he won’t be able to make his debut in the Champions League tie next month because of suspension.
“That’s true, the club have told me that I have a one-match ban still to serve,” he added. “It just means that the players will have to cope by themselves.”
Rossoneri director general Ariedo Braida was the man behind the move and he’s delighted with his capture.
“We’ve tried to sign him in the past, but because of a thousand reasons we weren’t able to,” stated the official.
“Today he is here with us and we are happy to finally have him here. Let’s hope that he can do some important things and he can certainly do well.
“He’s young, just 25, he has a family, a son and he therefore has all the human requisites to do well with us.”
Meanwhile, Brazilians Nelson Dida and Kaka returned to pre-season training today after being called back for the Champions League preliminaries.
Oddo is a right-back Josh-Sheva, so yes he plays in Cafu's position. As does Reveillere, Alves & Trabelsi. Some other right-backs we've been linked with over the past few months.
Ah, W_MILAN, i see you are back under a different name now trying to get us all to go to these links you always post. I think the mods need to ban you again, please leave.

There are some negativities here after the capture of Bonera. some of the posters here are questioning about his consistency for the past few years.
Well this guy is just 25 years old. I believe Milan wanted him for quite some time now knowing how good he was. Under the guidance of costacurta and Capitano,we might polish him into a real gem.
Let him show his worth before we start being negative. If he turn out to be good, Milan will not have to worry for few years as he is young.
If he turns out bad then, we got him for a steal right under inter nose. :D

Excellent news!! Good signing indeed. The surprising thing was how we managed to pull it off. Bonera has always been a transfer target for top clubs over the last three or four seasons. If my memory serves me right, he almost moved to Juve some years ago. The strange thing is this year. His name was never mentioned in connection to us or any other big club for that matter, and all of a sudden---done deal!!
I think he's a safe choice as well. We could have gone for other right backs, but there would always be the possibility of a repeat Cosmin Contra :) I think it's probably safest to go with someone with serie a experience, italian nt experience (albeit only a few caps), who can slot right in and start delivering....

I don't think Oddo is coming anymore, since we got Bonera, but then again, it might be a way to prevent Lazio from jacking up the price for Oddo
i am very sure we will not be signing anymore defenders, we have plenty of them and some of them are versatile. replacement for cafu? brocchi! or bonera(if he improves his attacking quality).
we have very impressive defence this term:
RB:cafu,brocchi,bonera,simic
CB:maldini,nesta,costacurta,favalli
LB:jankulovski,serginho,kaladze
It's impressive on paper no doubt, but it doesn't hide the frailties that we had last year.
Cafu is our most attacking right back and he can hardly run now, so he won't last being first choice. None of the back up right-backs offer enough width, pace or attacking options which is why we are looking at Oddo.
At CB Maldini is the same as Cafu in that he doesn't have the pace or the stamina now to last a whole season as first choice. Costacurta could hardly run last season so i don't see how things will have changed there. Kaladze is inconsistent, he plays some great games at CB and then some awful ones. This is why we need a new CB partner for Nesta, which should be Gallas.
LB we are fine at and have a good blend of attack & defensive minded players.

CB:maldini,nesta,costacurta,favalli
Do you call that 'impressive'?!? My goodness...
yes impressive, favalli might be a relevation for us, just like pancaro used to do for us. Age does not reflect ability. we need to sell simic and kalac(since we dont need 4 GK) and move brocchi as right back. i agree cafu cant defend and attack in the whole match now, he probably should play only as right midfielder in some matches to reduce the burden in defending or not play at all.
How can you say Brocchi should be moved to right-back ? He's a midfielder, he should only play RB in emergencies. We need the correct players for each position, we shouldn't 'make do' with putting players in technically unfamiliar roles.
You're right that Favalli could do what Pancaro did for us, but he has more chance of having a big effect on us in his natural position of left-back not at CB.
Who is our 4th keeper ? Dida Coppola & Kalac are the only ones i can think of.
Is Valerio Fiori still on the team? Or has he officially left already. If not then he is our 4th keeper.
zlatanov
04-08-2006, 09:48
according to the official site, Fiori is still on the team. Actually, I would rather see Milan keep Fiori as a 3rd GK and sell/release Kalac.
Josh-Sheva
04-08-2006, 10:01
Kalac is better than Fiori although he has made a lot of mistakes inthe WC, Fiori is old and garbage, I think we should sell to a low class team before we can't sell him any more...
zlatanov
04-08-2006, 10:09
Fiori is 37 yo. The moment to cash in on him is long gone. I prefer him cause he's been with us for years now and is part of the "environment" at Milanello, something Kalac is not. Also, given how often have we had to utilize our 3rd GK - basically never - an older and more experienced keeper is totally OK.
Also, I am not sure how often you've see Fiori play, but he is very, very good - I think even an excellent - keeper and if it wasn't for his age, he could be a second choice at Milan with ease. He's far better than Kalac IMO, at least the kalac from the past couple of years. At Perugia, Kalac was indeed excellent but I personally haven't seen that player for quite a while.

Are you saying we couldn't sell Fiori for at least £100,000? Maybe to Cicco Roma, or Lecco?
We could make some money outta him... I have seen him play buthis age is over the limits.....
I thought Fiori retired ?

If we were juve, I am sure we would have done something like that. And the player himself would probably retire if Milan doesn't need him anymore. My point is that although 37, he could still be useful as a 3rd GK and would probably stay with us, and the club would be happy to keep him, until he decides to retire.
Actually, like Jim suggested, I also thought i read somewhere that 05/06 would have been his last year with Milan as he was retiring but his name still appears on the official website. maybe he's just taking time to see how the situation with milan's GK will develope - with all those Buffon Rumours, Dida could leave, Coppolla's arrival - and only then will officially retire, guess we'll see.
And what are we going to get for £100,000? A new water boy? Maybe we could sign that 4 year old that Staci suggested, but if he's as good as she says he is, I don't think that £100,000 will be enough. Just let the guy retire at Milan.

Dida Coppola & Kalac are the only ones i can think of.
brocchi has characteristics to be a right back, besides ancelotti has rejuvenated some players with placing them in new position, such as kaladze, serginho, pirlo. i think cafu should play as right midfielder since he can not go up and down the field effortlessly as he used to.
fiori is in milan's CL squad for preliminary round while coppolla is not, i wonder why. i prefer coppolla as our second keeper and fiore third, so we have more italians in the squad.
favalli is too old to do overlapping as left back, unless if defending is his main duty. also there are serginho, janku, kaladze can play as left back, so there is no point put favalli there unless for emergency or tactical reason.
