The champions of the UCL against the champions of the UEFA cup...

the teams will not be in their best shape as the season will be just starting...
at least Ronaldo will be eligible to play...

Milan will aim for this trophy also in preparation for the Intercontinental cup to be played in December in Japan.

Early doors yet re this game, but one that is certainly an exciting prospect.

I do have utmost respect for Sevilla though, as they are an extremely good side...I just hope we snag Alves before that game! :D

Just kidding, I doubt he is even a target, but Sevilla are a very strong, attacking team, and the match vs Milan should be a good one.

I look forward to it, and hope that all our players will be injury free, and ready and raring to go!

FORZA MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILAN!!

Sevilla defeated Real Madrid in the Supercopa of Spain (winner or La Liga vs. winner of Copa del Rey)...

good news for us, their chances of winning again against Milan are now a bit slimmer...

Carlo Ancelotti: “I did not expect a win like this. I was afraid that the team had not yet found the right competitive approach, but they had a great attitude today. Ronaldo and Emerson will play in the European Super Cup. As for the fans, we tried to calm the situation and the decision to ban visiting supporters was good common sense.”

I for one am curious to see Ronaldo play. Remember Carlo did say he will amaze us in how he looks. The game should be next Wednesday at 2:30pm eastern time.

I believe the game is on Friday, August 31st, not Wednesday.

In the Italian version, all Carlo said about Emerson and Ronie was that they were would be available for selection, not that necessarily they will play.

I personally think that we'll start with the same formation that won the Cl final with only change being kaladze for Maldini

Ancelotti after todays game:

Three first half goals handed Milan a 3-0 win over a brave Genoa side, and Ancelotti was satisfied with his team's oveall display.

"I did not expect a win like this," he said after the game.

"I was afraid that the team had not yet found the right competitive approach, but they had a great attitude today."

"Ronaldo and Emerson should play in the European Super Cup [against Sevilla]," he continued, speaking about two Brazilians who did not feature.

"The former has been working very hard, while the latter just needs some more training to be ready to play.

"As for the fans [Milan fans were not allowed], we tried to keep things calm, and the decision to ban visiting supporters was good common sense.

"However, we have to hope that we do not have to take such emergency measures in the future, as it keeps fans away from the game."

I think against a team like Sevilla would be best to play a X-tree formation in order to close them down and control the spaces they have available.
Ball possession is also easier with a saturated midfield and also the players will have less running to do to cover spaces, which would be to their advantage now given that theystill aren't in top condition yet.

It would be quite a risk IMO to let such a quick passing and attacking team have enough space to open up and develope their game.

Hopefully Alves will get confused and get in the Milan coach. Milanlab can do some plastic surgery on him and Berlusconi can use his connections to create him a new Italian identity. As long as they dont perform a sex change we will have a hell of a free transfer. What do you think guys??

AEK officials asked from UEFA their CL match with Sevilla to be postponed because of the fires in Greece.
All AEK plyers said that it's impossible for them to play football or even think about football after what happened in Greece in the last 3 days.

Sevilla players are also having similar thoughts. Their player, Puerta, is in life danger and Ivica Dragutinovic (Sevilla defender) said that they only think about Puerta and pray for his life, noone thinks about football now.
Sevilla also wanted to postpone tomorrow's match.

But UEFA refused to postpone the match and they said that since the OAKA stadium in Athens is a safe place and there is no danger for fire on the stadium, the match will have to be played

I am sure, UEFA met the that decision based on the rules they have. I am really sorry for what happened in Greece and to Sevilla's player but the reasons the players from both sides have made is not strong enough to cancel the game, IMO. Let's see Iraq who just won the Asian Cup and what happen(ed) in Iraq before/during the competition. I think, it's a good example how we have to face the reality and still can do something in a really uncomfortable situation.

hany.Egypt
27-08-2007, 21:32
Its a diffrenet case Iraq (like what you mentioned) they faced he reailty and won the Asian cup but in Indonisa not in Iraq , the same goes for Greece, if the match was going to be in Spain then there is no reason to postpone it, but in this case the match is in Greece were there is.
1- Very hot weather.
2- Fire is every where and its still dengerous.
3- The people in Greece are very sad for the victimes(I dont know the exact number but its sth like 50 +).
So considering the situation in Greece right now I doubt that any one will go to watch the match in the staduim or even at home, so postponing the match in this case IMO is the right decision and it wont be the end of the world if they do so.

They still can play in other country and now what is the diffrent? But as UEFA said (according to Tony's post), the place is safe and we have already experienced football without fans in a stadium when the matches were moved to other places for example.

I just cant accept about their saying that they cant think about football, according to Tony's post, and use that as the reason to cancel the game.

UEFA won't postpone the match only because of Friday's draw.
If Sevilla and AEK don't play this week then there won't be a draw for the CL groups in Friday and there won't be a draw for God knows how long because Sevilla will play on Friday against Milan and they won't be in position to play a CLQ match on Saturday or Sunday, while from September 8th the national teams will play their matches and all the players will have to be released from their clubs 5 days earlier. If the match won't take place today or tomorrow, there will be no time for it to be played.
That's why UEFA were right not to postpone this match, no matter how un-human it may seem.

P.S : Have in mind that it makes a big difference who between AEK and Sevilla will make it to CL. One of them will be in the 2nd while one of them in the 3rd or 4th pot, so it's impossible to have the draw.

SANT

TBH, I have watched a few Sevilla games and couldn't recall Puerta... last night, before these sad news were given, I watched the replay of the game against Getafe... at the 30th minute he runs towards his goal to cover the ball as it goes out of bounds... gets on his knees and vanishes... the doctor did a good job in recovering him in a couple minutes... he even walked out of the pitch by himself...

to go from that image, to this... I have no words... it's just too sad... then to know his girlfriend is 7 months pregnant with their first child...

I don't see why the game must be played on Friday... I'm sure there are some logistic expenses associated with changing the dates, but c'mon... the kid died... we can have this game next month...

It's very tragic. I strongly suggest the match postponed to January, days before the second half of season starts.

Now if it has to go on as scheduled, I doubt either team won't celebrate winning the trophy, though Milan's chance would be slim, the battle for Sevilla will be in the name of Puerta, and Rossoneri will find it hard to tackle those sad people. You don't want to see the top European competition be a memorial match at a very bad timing.

AEK-SEvilla has been posponed but the Supercup will go on. It will be played in a dark mood, and its a shame.

I hope this kind of tragedy will remind all of the sport world that human health is more important that a result and that all the doping that actually causes these heart attacks will stop.

Rest in peace Puerta, Milan fans are with you.

I also thought at first that the only problem was him swallowing his tongue ... especially when he walked off the field by himslef.
but as it turned out, it wasn't just small incident that was the problem as he suffered a series of heart attacks (5 in all from what I read, which caused serious damage to vital organs) ... swallowing his tongue was merely a side effect of him losing consciousness.

Considering the seriousness of his situation, the sad news today were unfortunately, more or less, the logical outcome and everything else would have been nothing short of a miracle :(

UEFA have decreed the European Super Cup Milan-Sevilla will go ahead as a tribute to Antonio Puerta, who tragically died today.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug28p.html

I don't think it is the right decision.
And to say it is in tribute to Antonio Puerta is just a weak reason to let the game go through, a tribute match should be played by teams and players who mean something to Antonio and that is not the case with Milan.

zlatanov

from the article above it turnes out that Puerta had previously had problems with losing consciosness during training, and not on one occasion at that ...

If that's indeed true, then I guess all the blame would have to go on his club and their medical staff ... it's one thing to have a hidden heart defect without any manifestations of a problem but this ...

Ronaldo Almost Five 'Kilos' Lighter

Ronaldo seems to have profited from the intense training he's been carrying out over the last month, and Carlo Ancelotti will most probably call him up for the match against Sevilla.

zoom - galleria Ronaldo trained well yesterday, and those who saw him insist the Brazilian worked very hard and looked tired by the end.

Later, he spent half an hour working with the ball under the supervision of coach Carlo Ancelotti, who wanted to gauge the level of his form and fitness was.

It seems that Ancelotti was satisfied with what he saw, and will now call upon the Brazilian for European Supercup final against Sevilla.

Over the course of the pre-season, Ronaldo has managed to lose almost five 'kilos': the cures prescribed to him to eliminate the problems in his thyroid once and for all don't allow for any eating excesses.

'El Fenomeno' had injured himself on July 31 after a week of training, and at the time it seemed like a typical innocuous summer incident.

However, this small problem has kept the player out for almost a month now, but during this period MilanLab have aimed for a complete regeneration of the striker, hoping to solve the problem at the core.

oh cmon, some of you are overreacting. What if he died in a car accident? What if he died under shower at home? Would you be all sore even withouth that overwhelming news reporting about the only interesting thing that has happened today? Its a proper thing to wear black armbands in the match, to have a silent minute, to play in his name and to lift a trophy on behalf of him. Half of you didnt even know him (and i even dont want to go to how much people i dont care about die every day so i can live comfortable life like i am).

This may sound rough, but its reality - people die all the time, young and old, footballers, farmers or queens. Its a shame, but thats how it is.

I understand what Peters said, but that would be the mood, Sevilla players will be sad, it'll pass to everyone in the stadium. Without passion and enjoyment, it's awkward, more than the arm band.

If UEFA choose not to make a big fuss, I'd rather see the supercup not be the first match after the tragedy.

What difference does it make the way he died? It would have been the same concern unless something really weird thing happened. A player of my NT died in a car crash, his team didn't play in that whole week. Another one commited suicide and his team didn't play for a week either (+ their closest friends had to take a little more time before playing again).

And it's not overreacting. I'm against the game being played mostly because putting myself on Sevilla's players shoes I wouldn't feel ok to play a game so soon after my friend/teamate death. My head wouldn't be in the right place at the moment. Yes, the world moves on, but it moves on after I had my team to mourn, and if it takes a month, it'll take a month, if it's just a day, then it's just a day.

I would prefer UEFA to ask Sevilla's players + coaching staff if they feel like playing before making any decisions, if they want to play, and they feel like they can, and they really want to play well as a nice gesture towards Puerta, then yes, the game should be held on August 31st, as already stablished. But if they don't feel like it, then (also considering both teams full schedules), I would just cancel it.

Needless to say that this new enviroment the game will be held on is not the kind of moment place a match of football should be held on. It's sad, it's an unfair advantage to play against a team that was just hit by a terrible loss, it's going to be unconfortable for our team...it's just not right.

I understand that Puerta´s death (R.I.P) is a touchy subject, and I understand all those who have posted their desire for the match not to be played...but has anyone stopped to think what Puerta would have wanted?

I would bet my right foot, that he would have wanted the game to be played...he was a footballer, and he loved football probably more than breathing...so...for me, I would think that playing the match, in his honour, would be the best thing that could be done...

What I do know, is that it will be very difficult to beat Sevilla now, if they dedicate the game to his memory.

Regardless, I hope it is a good game, and that we win, and importantly, we make a statement, as the winning team, in his memory.

It will be a sad game but... we are professional club that lives out of trophyes and money. Milan need to win this one...

So lets talk about the game:

I expect the same formation as against Genova with Pippo up front. could be that Emerson and Ronaldo will be on the bench, and that can be usefull if we are winning or one of the Pirlo-Gattuso-Ambro gets injured or has yellow and plays nervous football. I dont trust Brocchi is these big matches and this is why Emerson is a good buy for us. He is so experienced he can adapt every team in serie a in just a few weeks.

Ronaldo still isnt fit as he should be, but maybe we'll do what we were doing in CL. Play Pippo for 65-75 min at highest tempo, so he runs about 10 km and plays his soul out, and then introduce another forward to do the same untill the end, Ronaldo most likely.

I hope Seedorf will be in goos shape as we will need him coming back to midfield to prevent combinatoric play by Sevillas midfield. With no Alves that means they will not be so dedly from the right side as usual, but we still need to duplicate the flanks and stop the delivery to Kanoute.

With a smart and slow tempo, and Kaka's, Seedorf's and Pirlo's changes of pace, we can conmtrol the game and do it our way. Milan 1-0, Pippo :grinser:

Dont hink it would be easy for the fans to accept the idea of ( injoying ) a football match while a player of thier team has just died , we have experianced exactly the same situation in Egypt ( Mohamed Abd El Wahab ) a 22 years old defender died exactly the same way first swollowed his toung then 2 weeks later died in a trainning session and Al Ahly ( the Team that I support and which Abd El Wahab was playing for ) had and important match in the African CL, 4 days later and the CAF also refused to postpone the match, and Al Ahly played the game and won it and I felt really sad when I saw the players running on the pitch in fact I cried and felt its way too cruel to play a game and try to ( enjoy ) it while the is a player that has just been buried, just think about it nothing is going to happen if the match is played next week instead of next friday.

My worry is that Milan won't be serious in playing this game due to Puerta's loss.
In this case it could also be that Milan "give" the trophy to Sevilla for them "to enjoy" after losing their player in tragedy.

One thing that I love Milan more and more is the attitude of the club when they sent Galliani, Braida and one more staff to attend Puerta's funeral and got applause from the resident and Sevilla's fans.
This is the club with "heart" and "passion" who know how to respect their opponents. Would the Merda do the same as Milan???

Hope that Milan would win the Super Cup..and I "predict" that Maldini would be on the pitch if Milan are uphill..say 2-0 or 3-1 and only 5-10 minutes to go.....then we will again watch Maldini to lift up the Super Cup.

Emerson and Ronaldo will start form the bench, and if there is no reason I would also take care of them becouse we need them fit for the rest of the season. Fiorentina is only 3 days after Sevilla and we could use them both.

In my book, the Super Cup is now almost meaningless.
Back in the 70's and the 80's, even early 90's, when only one team from each league was playing in CL and when domestic Coppa was almost as important as the league, the European super cup was really THE match to decide who was the best team in Europe that year.
Now, when all the best teams are in CL and when mostly 2nd level teams play in UEFA Cup, it lost it's meaning.
Just imagine..... Inter, Manchester, Stuttgart, Real playing in CL while Milan, Chelsea, Bayern and Barcelona playing in Cup winners cup and Juve, Liverpool, Schalke and Valencia playing in UEFA Cup. The winners of both competitions (CL and Cup winners cup) would have played a real super cup final, not like it is today

blah blah should be postponed because we're all sorry... meaningless now but it wasnt before blah blah. Milan should win this one and this one is worth fighting for. One week after this all of it will be forgotten, like in case of Foe, the next day already was. Given the outcome of Emerson's last outing in goal, i don't think he should volunteer :D

I just don't see how getting rid of Storari was a good idea, we're now weaker in terms of numbers for goalkeepers, so how does that benefit us? Dida hurts a shoulder, so we may have to use the awful Kalac ... and what if he injures himself or plays as badly as only he can? We have the arthritic Fiori who'll probably dive once and then shatter his hip or something.

I don't see how anyone can be 100% happy with our GK situation.

I don't think letting storari go weakens us in any way as neither Kalac nor Fiori would preform worse than Marco would have had he stayed with us.

I also had high hopes for Storari but maybe in the end of the day he was as good as Milan thought he was - good enough for a solution in an emergency situation and not a tad more ... I guess, that's what 1-2 mil for a 29 yo keeper buys you these days.

That's not to say that I don't think we need another keeper as I personally would prefer to have Fiori retire and join the coaching staff or whatever, Kalac becomes the 3rd GK and we get a young (23-27), excelent prospect of a keeper to back up Dida at first and then once he gels into the squad, even become our first choice should he prove to have what it takes for the job ... storari for me didn't have it and was no better than Kalac and Fiori, so his departure didn't hurt us IMO.

I don't see how anyone can be 100% happy with our GK situation.
and what are we supposed to do about that ... pluck our hair for something we can't change no matter what? :D

"we're now weaker in terms of numbers for goalkeepers, so how does that benefit us?"

So if you can't see that having 3 keepers to choose from (no matter what their skill level) is a stronger position than having 2 keepers to choose from (as i'm completely disregarding Fiori from both totals), then i don't know what to say to you other than i think you may need to take Maths 101 again!

yes, I did Jim and that's why I mentioned Fiori for not being any worse than Storari in terms of quality because if you consider Fiori to be lacking security on goal, Storary was just as insecure when he was given the chance ... and let's not forget that the coaching staff had more than enough time to study Storari so I am sure that if they didn't think he was worth keeping, then he probably wasn't.

for a 3rd keeper, Fiori is perfectly fine, he may not be young anymore but qualitywise isn;t any worse than Storari and Firori is someone who actually doesn't mind being a 3rd keeper 'cause Storari obviously did after those words of his following his move to SPain "At Milan I didn't have enough space".

And we do have enough of GKers in terms of numbers ... if a fourth keeper is needed, that's what the youth team GKers are for, it's like that in all teams.

Keeping 4 senior keepers beacuase 1 or 2 of them of them might get injured is not much of a logic anyway 'cause by that same reasoning, even 5 keepers might not be enough as 4 of them might get injured ... does that warrant us stacking up a special team of keepers?
That's excatly what makes it an emergency situation and should it arise, a new keeper, a cheap temporary solution most likely, will be found or we'll just get one of the several keepers of Storari's and Coppola's quality that we have loaned out to other teams ... which is pretty much what we did last year with Storari.

math 101 taken in the 2-3 minutes it took me to write this post, you want me to do the same with Logic 101 or not :)

Zlat i'm talking about numbers not who's better than who, hence why i suggested you taking Math 101 as you didn't seem to think having 2 keepers was a weaker position than us having 3 keepers the season before.

I find it quite amazing that both you and Rico seem to think Fiori is a valid substitute when he's hardly ever played for us. So what are you basing his quality on when he's never been tested in real situations or for a long stretch of games?

Dida, Kalac, Storari, Fiori > Dida, Kalac, Fiori .... surely you can see that? That's all i'm saying.

My opinions on Kalac as a keeper are another discussion altogether.

but Jim, there is not enough space in the team for 4 senior keepers, that's what I've been trying to say.
From Storari's words I think it's pretty obvious that he wanted more than just be a 3rd choice, and if he was good enough to be 2nd shoice, chances he'd have gotten the spot but I think the coaching staff simply weren't impressed with him to be 2nd choice and that's what makes him not worth keeping:
1) a 3rd keeper is rarely used, and for that position Fiori is just fine
2) Storari didn't wanna be a 3rd keeper and that pretty much didn't leave Milan any choice other than let him go ... something I doubt they'd have done if he had impressed the coaches.

My point is that 3 senior keepers is what we need and that's been the practice at any club for a long time now ... if we lack something in the GK department it is not in numbers - no point in having 3 average keepers when 2 would be just as enough - but in quality, which could be fixed only if get a talanted understudy for Dida but he has to be someone who would potentially take over the first spot from the Brazilian in a 1-2 years ... what the coaching staff seems to have realized is that Storari is not someone who fits that profile.

If there is an emergency sitiation with injuries and such, then we just go out and buy another Storari-like GK for 1-2 mils as a temporary solution or we just get one of the many Gk we have loaned out to other teams but a 4th senior keeper is something we can have only in such emergencies, we can't afford to have senior kepers on stand by just in case as they would not agree to be such an emergency back up, something which Fiori doesn't mind being.

Rico

Dida, Kalac, Storari, Fiori > Dida, Kalac, Fiori .... surely you can see that? That's all i'm saying.
You want FOUR keepers?? Inter have 7 strikers. Is that really what we want?!?

Tony29.
31-08-2007, 09:07
Jaime, i agree here with Zlat. It sure is more secure to have 4 keepers but just look at the rosters of all the other teams and you'll see that none of them has 4 keepers and those who have are just adding some Primavera GK as 4th choice. Something Milan can also do if they want.

Abbiati thinks that he is good enough to be first choice keeper in a great/very good club, which he is, and it's understandable why he's loaned out. He will not accept to be a sub.

Storari.... Zlat says he would have been a 3rd keeper. I didn't follow the situation, but i think he would have been the 2nd keeper and he didn't want to accept even that position. He thinks he deserves to be a starter (dunno, maybe he had illusions that Dida will leave Milan and he'll get his spot).
Storari himself didn't want to accept the position of 3rd or maybe even 2nd keeper. That's why he left.

I know you're talking about numbers only but as Zlat told you, if you need a 4th keeper, you can easily get him from primavera.
After all, your primavera keeper is probably much better than some senior keeper who would have been willing to accept the position of 4th choice keeper.

Today, the good keepers don't want to accept the bench role. Even someone who is first choice keeper in Reggina or Empoli would rather stay there and play than go to Milan and warm the bench all the time (keepers are rarely rotated).

#2.- Although it's not yet discussed among mods (and Zlat, you're one of them) I think you can forget about the religion thread... if you like it so much, keep it at the other forums you're members of... not here.

We have enough trouble dealing with Zeekay's posts... we have been through enough with religious topics before... that's not going to happen.
Yes... Well, the whole purpose of the religion thread is socially an opportunity to grow. It is my opinion that juventuz.com is maybe a thousand times more volatile to end up getting the religion thread closed. Guess what? It went on for months and it wasn't closed.

@Tony29 - As charmed as I am of your liking of my tales of my numerous past lives I do not think the thread should consist of me telling about me only. The whole thread is also interesting because you hear opinions from people from a completely different location in the world telling you something you can benefit from hearing.

I have a feeling that things will go Sevilla's way tonight given their recent problems ...
And I don't get why we loaned out Abbiati again as he is quite a good keeper.

Tony75
31-08-2007, 12:11
Coz Abbiati believes he such be number one, and when played more often than not he doesn't hack it. Being 2nd choice is psychological, which Abbiati doesn't have the credentials.

zlatanov
31-08-2007, 14:04
Hey Zlat....... didn't you tell me there's not a chance Alves to play the Super Cup ? :D
no, I said that if they had an agreement or were close to one for the sale of Alves, then he will not play ... since he is playing, that means that he will almost certainly stay with Sevilla as it would be unlikely that they strike a deal from scratch with Real or Chelski in the remaining couple of hours around and after the game.

btw,
1-0 Sevilla by Renato after bad coverage by Milan - Oddo and Dida were caught in no mans land here - from a corner kick

zlatanov
31-08-2007, 14:07
Dida should have caught that ball as it bounced right next to him and if he hadn't lost his balance, he would have had no problem with it.

However, the defense should have covered Renato and one other Sevilla player who were left totally alone at the back post ... Oddo tried to cover but was too late and the ball actually took a deflection from his right leg.

guys, just a question ... are you even watching the game cuase Tony comes up with a mistake on Dida and all of you in one voice just do a follow up when Dida was anything but at fault here - he closed down kanoute very well and if it wasn't for that, it would have been a goal, most probably ... Dida was stretched like a buble gum thanks to the mistake of the defense in front of him.

If anyone messed up here it was Kaladze, not Dida
