Italian Giants to mark SoL Showpiece (http://www.safc.com/news/?page_id=12560)
Sunderland AFC today announced they will hold a showpiece game at the Stadium of Light in August to mark the stadium's tenth anniversary.
The club is celebrating 10 years at the 49,000-capacity stadium, still regarded today as one of the finest arenas in world football, this summer.
And as part of the celebrations, the club will entertain Juventus - the most successful team in the history of Italian football and one of Europe's so-called 'superpowers' - in a showpiece game on Saturday August 4, seven days before the start of the Premiership campaign.
Chairman Niall Quinn is delighted to have secured such high-profile opposition for what will be a historical game for the club and its fans.
"We're delighted with the news and I'm sure it will excite our supporters," he said. "Juve is one of the biggest clubs on the world stage, with countless European successes as well as a superb domestic record.
"There have been some legendary players to have represented the club over the years and it will be an honour to welcome some household names to the Stadium of Light when they come here.
"I'm sure most fans, like me, can't wait to see the likes of renowned stars Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved here at our stadium.
"To host a club with the stature of Juventus is both a privilege for Sunderland AFC and is fitting opposition for what is really a landmark game, so as a club we're naturally delighted and excited."
The Stadium of Light was opened with a pretigious curtain-raiser against Dutch giants Ajax on July 30, 1997 - a game which finished 0-0 - followed by its first league game against Manchester City, with current chairman Quinn scoring the first goal at the stadium in a 3-1 win.
Since then the stadium has seen many highs and lows - including three promotions, two relegations, a record-breaking points season when Sunderland won the old Division One with 105 points and Kevin Phillips' European Golden Boot season in the Premiership.
To mark the historical game at the Stadium of Light, which kicks off at 3pm, SAFC have issued reduced admission prices as a thank you to fans for their steadfast and loyal support over the last 10 years.
Tickets will be priced at £15 for adults and £5 juniors for 2007-08 season ticket holders, and prices for non-season ticket holders will be £20 all adults and £5 juniors. These prices will apply to all areas of the stadium.
Further details on how to apply for tickets will be announced in due course.
Sounds good, I'll have to try and see the game - will be tricky travelling from Oxford though. Maybe I'll take a Milan shirt/scarf ...
