View Full Version : Give me a book !
It's summer. No work, absolutly no obligations and a lot of free time. I have a small baby boy and it looks like i will miss on Antalya, the Greek coast or any other tourist destination this year.
The same baby boy has a nasty habbit to wake us up in 3 in the morning, the weather is hot and it's impossible to fall asleep after that.
So..... i decided to read as many books as i can.
What i want you to do is to tell me your favorite book or books. Possibly a word or two (or a link) if the book is not well known , and i'll find the book to read it.
Zlat, Dru, Warro, Hasan, Kastriot, Kui (not here lately), Debs are obligated to write here.
I'll appreciate it if the others also tell me their favorite book.
My favorite one is Death and the Dervish by Mesa Selimovic. It's been a favorite of mine since i read it 17 years ago and it still is after 6 more times reading it. I learned so much from this book
http://dannyreviews.com/h/Death_Dervish.html
Grazie ! :)
Take a look at http://www.milanmania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17585 too
I have been reading non-fiction almost exclusively in recent years like history books, Noam Chomsky books, etc.
A nice one is which is told like a story is A Death in Brazil: A Book of Omissions http://www.amazon.com/Death-Brazil-Omissions-MacRae-Books/dp/0805076417
How 'bout telling us what your favourite subjects are, Juventino? :zany:
Personally I like reading difficult books, it improves your way of thinking.
Something like The Brothers Kamarazov by Dostojevski or War and Peace by Tolstoy.
I also enjoyed reading A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, it really makes you think about our society.Another one of those is Animal Farm by George Orwell.
If you prefer a bit more "light" lecture try reading a Dan Brown(Da Vinci Code) or Stephen King. That is if you like "thrillers".
My sister likes reading books by Karin Slaughter, they're pretty good too and not that hard.
Grtz
Russian 19 century literature is my favorite but i've read all there is to read there.
History is my work and i want to take a break from it during this summer.
I'd like more difficult books but if there is an interesting "lighter" book, i won't object !
I've read Da Vinci's code and most of Stephen King. I'd like some relativly unknown author with a great book writen

I guess you could try Da Davinci Code or brothers Karamazov(i) as already suggested ... or the Devine Comedy by Aleghieri in case you haven't read it already.
History is my work and i want to take a break from it during this summer.
Can't suggest Durant's The Story of Civilization series then :D

I might know a few other books but do you like fantasy/science-fiction?
Also, I enjoy reading Herman Brusselmans, a Belgian writer.
But I doubt you will find his books outside Belgium?

I've read those Zlat, like i said.
I've read many many books and i'm having a hard time finding something new and interesting.
I need something nod widely known, but still good. F.e you can recomend some good Bulgarian writer and some of his books. ThrusT can give me a Belgian writer and Rezag an Iranian.
That's what i'm looking for :)
Can't suggest Durant's The Story of Civilization series then
Read it
Except for the Reformation and Voltaire. And i don't plan to read these :)
I suggest "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, and "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. Great literature.
There is a Trinidadian Nobel / Pulitzer (?) prize author named V.S. Naipaul....he wrote some great books like the house of Mr Biswas and other titles that a superficial moron like myself couldn't be bothered with :zany: His writing style is excellent and he's a descriptive genious but since my attention span is shorter than a Tic Tac :grinser: , you'd quicker see my eyes glued to the playstation :p017:
You should also read "An Inconvenient truth" by Al Gore :5ok:
Or if you think you are losing your Juventino touch there's always
"Match fixing/doping referee bribing for dummies" :rotfl:
Hope your kid gives you a wee bit of peace though....
best wishes,
dru
Tony, I'll give you a few more, I'll check my book-closet tomorrow as well.
"De ontdekking van de hemel"(don't know it in English) written by Harry Mulisch.
Few more good writers imo :
-Hugo Claus
-Raymond E. Feist
-Frank Herbert(Dune-series)
-Umberto Ecco(but I guess you've read most of his material as a historicus :grinser:)
-Terry Goodkind
-Haruki Murakami
-JRR Tolkien
To end it : La fascination du pire - Florian Zeller
Hope there are some writers in there you haven't heard of before. :grinser:

You are right, the title is De Kapellekensbaan. :)
I wonder how I could have forgotton that one, shame on me.
If you've read that, you should also consider Zomer te Ter-Muren(don't know the title in English) by Boon.

Just read the first 5 pages. This should do it.
There's something about the Islamic literature that i find hard to
resist, eventhough i'm a Christian born atheist :devf:
Thanx
And i'll certanly try to find the Belgian authors and the books RIO suggested.
P.S : Nice books Jeff. Read both of them though :)

Any AC Milan history books or player biographies
in English available???
Thanks. :5ok:
Coelho's The Alchemist is my favorite. Weeks ago a friend of mine lent me Stephen Hawking's Different Seasons which contains Shawshank Redemption, but The Body IMO is the best story about friendship. Next time I come over to his house I swear God I'll steal that book.

The same day we won the UCL I bought a book about MVB De jaren in Italië en Oranje written by Zeger van Herwaarden. Though I'm not sure if it's already available in English
"SVJETSKI ZAGOVOR"Lol , i'm holding the Macedonian version in my hand atm
I think you're talking about Ralph Epperson "The unseen hand" . We translated the title to "Svijetski zagovor" :)
Nice book, but Epperson is such a paranoic with his conspiracy theories. :grinser:
and i kinda knew where he was heading
What I'm currently reading, Children of the Arbat by Anatoli Rybakov. Its not Russian 19th century, its 20th century, but its an excellent book. It gives you a glimpse of life in Moscow in the 30's, in the Stalin era.
I'm guessing since you said Russian 19th century literature is your favorite there's no need to recommend anything by Pushkin, am I right? But in case you haven't be sure to read The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin. Also I'd recommend A Hero of our Time by Mikhail Lermontov.
And I now you said you don't want to read anything historical, but Boris Vasilyev wrote some excellent historical fiction on WWII.
You are right, the title is De Kapellekensbaan. :)
I wonder how I could have forgotton that one, shame on me.
If you've read that, you should also consider Zomer te Ter-Muren(don't know the title in English) by Boon.
The title in English is "Summer in Termuren", and I have a copy that I am planning on reading later this month. The one I really want to read is (I think this is how you spell it) "Mein klein oorlog", or somesuch, but it is not translated into English.
The Brotherhood of the Rose - David Morrel
An espionage/action packed book.

Right now i'm reading for the second time:
"If this is a man" by Primo Levi. The story is well know, and italian chemist who survived more than one year in the concentration camp of Buna- Monowitz.
Read the second installment, "The Truce", which reports his picaresque return to home in a devastated and unrecognisable Europe of 1945.
You might find these interesting ... but then again, maybe not
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman:
