Do you want Emerson or not? this is a question tha bothers us a lot for a lot of time for that reason i open this thread :5ok: .

I express my opinion once more saying that Emerson is old enough. Moreover i have been watching him with Real Madrid and in a lot of games with Brazil the last years and i think that he is too slow in passing and in his game :5ok: . Post your justification apart from voting if you want....

obviously emerson is not in milan's long term plan, that is why we try to get him on loan not buy him outright. We do really need an extra midfielder, our midfield is seriously lacking in depth. our defence and strikers are well covered, our midfield needs one more reinforcement in my opinion.
why dont we go for quaresma?

I don't want Emerson because:
1) not very technical player...even for a DM (better then Gattuso though)
2) seems to be a crybaby
3) if signed, he presents a temptation for our management not to look for a real midfield solution
4) as Capello's chief in command his very presence is irritating
5) Over 32
6) his purchase takes away from the Quaresma/Aguero fund :D :D
7) slow....if we get a DM might as well be fast like Diarra/Vieira

Emerson to Milan tomorrow.
And Barcellona blocked Motta
"Will not leave FREE"

The last doubt is about the formula of transfer: Milan hope in the cancelation of PUMA's contract, while REAL prefers the loan deal with the right to buy clause in favour of Milan.
But the agreement between parties is near.

Milan has increased their offer for Motta to 4 mil (http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Calciomercato/Primo_Piano/2007/08_Agosto/12/mottaedmilson.shtml)

remember, I hadn't said "Emerson will be announced ... remember you heard it here first" ... see, you were a bit too quick, didn't wait for my heads-up and look what's happened now :diablo:

This being said, Tiago Motta will be announced within a couple of days ... Emerson was the back up plan due to fears of Milan management that he has developed pubalgia (chronic groin pain) and Milan needs their reinforcement to step in immediately.

No, I don't want him simply cuz we don't need him. We have 3 pretty good DM's like Gatusso, Ambrosini and Brocchi. :pp20: And as I know, all of them are still healthy :bri: If something happens, we can always buy someone in January. There are 3 Brasilian DM's available : Tiago Motta, Edmilson and Emerson. Emerson deffinately is the worst of them. All of them are injury prone :str: but one of them will/would be bought for the bench.
IMO Edmilson is the best of them. I still remember 2 seasons ago when we played vs Barca in the semis, Edmilson made Kaka's life very diffficult and that's why we were outplayed in the midfield. I know he's injured right now, but may be he'll recover 'til January...

Emerson is a Gattuso syle player and like him we got Rino, Ambrosini & Brocchi so IMO we don't need him that much. The problem with Emerson are his age (31) and phsical conditions but there problems we encountered them and solved them in recent past with Cafu in 2004 and Ronaldo few months ago.

If Gourcuff is really the petite Zizou then we don't need midfielders, or else let's loan Yoann for a year to see what he's capable of and bring Emerson, possibly for a 1 year loan deal.

Yesterday acmilan.com reported that the Emerson discussion is being kept on hold because there's a difference between Milan's offer and Real's demand.

This may be the result of the good performance shown by Gourcuff in the tim cup vs Inter where IMO he was our best player. Real are also afraid in giving us Emerson since they are our rivals in the Champions League. Milan want Emerson in the same way Sampdoria signed Cassano and to say the truth Milan where going to pay Emerson's full wage and 2 million for a 1 year deal. It is clear that Real are afraid of reinforcing a competitor.

Anyway with or without Emerson our squad is not going to chANGE that much

Our team is fine as it is, but we have many aged players. And aged players are more prone to injuries, so to have a player like Emerson on our bench is a good Bonus, especially if he comes cheap.

I have said it numerous times. I would definitely want Emerson in our squad. The only thing I'm surprised about Real Madrid is why are they being so difficult, or is it just second nature for the Calderon/Mijatovic delusional pair?

There is no room for Emerson in their squad for next year. He has a contract with them, they are paying him a pretty hefty salary. There is only ONE buyer interested in him, and we are willing to pay a transfer (though minimal) fee for him---i.e. take him on loan, pay his wages, and perhaps buy him outright next year. What seems to be the problem? Do they really think they can get top dollar for a 31 year old who had a so so year, and who is not really setting the market on fire?

The Ronaldo fiasco has convinced me more than ever of the ineptitude of the Real managment team. We offered good money for him last summer---they went on and asked for close to Sheva's transfer fee for him. And then what happens---they dont play him, and then land up selling him to us for a fraction of what we offered to pay just 4 months before....So I agree with our management completely. If Real want to play hard ball about Emo, then the hell with it---we should just stop negotiations and look elsewhere....let's hope the MOtta deal works out.

it looks like that Galliani and Mijatovic had struck a deal for emerson to come to Milan - 2 mil for a year loan + 5 mil for the buy-out clause, I believe - but Calderon interfered and broke off a done deal by setting emrson;s price at 11 mil and refusing to let him go out on loan.

This was in gazzetta, quoting emerson's words on the matter (from what things seem to be on the first page) and they even wrote an apology totheir readers for saying that emerson to Milan was a done deal 2 days ago, although they maintain that what they reported was indeed true.

Every man has a pride, even Calderon.
Being scared of Milan beating them in CL isn't the reason why Calderon won't let go Emerson for cheap. Chances are big that he won't even have to play vs Milan in CL.
Milan made him look like a fool in front of Real fans. He promised them Kaka and Milan didn't let him go.
Milan made him look like a fool with Ronaldo - twice. The first time when he sold him for peanuts and the second time when Milan proved that Ronnie isn't finished like Calderon and co. thought.

Calderon paid 20m euro for Canna and Emerson. It was never announced how much of these money went for Canna and how much for Emerson, but i guess at least 12m were for Emerson. He still has 1 rate to pay to Juve.
If he lets him go on loan for 2m and then Milan doesn't wanna buy him after 1 year, what is Calderon getting ? He still owes 4m to Juve for Emerson, he'll get 2m from Milan and he'll even have to add 2 more million from his pocket to pay Juve for a player who's not even playing for Real anymore.

He'll look like the ultimate fool. Stubborn and proud rich man like him won't allow that to happen. If it's needed he'll keep Emo on the bench and pay his wages rather then give him to Milan on one year loan.
If it was any other team i believe he wouldn't have blocked the loan deal and he would have given the green light. But it's Milan. He won't let Milan make a fool out of him for the third time.

Or at least i think he won't do such a thing. :grinser:

what you say does make sense and gazzetta also thow in some other possible reasons for this here:
http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Calciomercato/Primo_Piano/2007/08_Agosto/17/emerson.shtml

but if Calderon had pride, I would think he wouldn't go back on a done deal and make his right hand, Mijatovic, look like a muppet on strings.
Anyways, I think they are just buying time, both sides that is, and doing so in their own ways.

given the circumstances around Emerson - not any dif than those surrounding Ronaldo, I think even a man with a fake pride like Calderon's would acknowledge that Milan is their best bet, not to say the only one, of getting rid of a player not wanted by management, coach, and fans at Real M.

And I am sure even a manager as shrude as Calderon would acknowledge that it would be better to get 2 mils for sure for a 31-32 yo player, and save another 4.5 mil from paying his salary and keeping him on the bench or even out of the team (like Cassano), than get nothing at all for a player they will hardly use at all ... and the possibility of Milan agreeing to pay the extra 5 mil of the buy-out clause would be like a welcome bonus.

And let's not forget what Real tried to do in Ronaldo's case - Milan offered them 16 mil, they didn't wanna go below 24/25 mil ... in 4-5 months, they were selling Ronaldo for 7.5 mil. Given Emerson's situation in Real, the odds are overwhlemingly on that Real would have to swallow another bitter pill if they insist on trying to be smarter than they are as the next step in Emerson's future - if they fail to offload him this summer - would be a 32 yo unwanted Emerson, with questions surrounding his fitness, asking for his contract being annulled and Real agreeing to it only to save themselves the 4.5 mil/season from his salary ... money they pay to a player no one at Real wants or wants to use.

So, next time Mr. calderon wants to play proud, he might wanna think a little ahead in the game and finally realize that if you want to get some good return from what you've spent on a player, you shouldn't make him look like garbage, ostracize him and let potential buyers know that he is an unwanted man in your team i.e. make his market value go down faster than a Calderon election promise ... 'cause once that's done, no pride would help you look like a shrewd businessman afterwards, and that's what Calderon's main objective is - to look like a good manager because that's the only way for him to stay a Real M president ... doubt pride has anything to do with it (or more precisely it's a bit too late to play proud) as if it did, then Calderon wouldn't have said and done about 95% of what he has said and done :)

RIO
17-08-2007, 11:23
But Calderon is one of the stupidest men alive, so he will just keep doing such things. It is really despite his poor management that RM achieved anything at all last season. You know the definition of an idiot savant? A very, very wise man who gives everyone the impression of being really, really stupid. Calderon is a savant idiot. :)
That he actually won a contested election (albeit as the head of a sports franchise), gives hope to us all that we might achieve something we are not qualified for, too.

Can you tell that I think he's an idiot? :D

@Tony--the pride issue would be relevant if Emo was actually liked by the Real madrid fans. Pride is probably one of the reasons why Laporta doesnt want to sell R10 to us this year, but Emo? The Real fans hate him, they boo him at their home ground, they never wanted him in the first place and I dont think they would mind if he left, even for free....So if we rule out pride, then I guess for Calderon, we're only left with stupidity---stupidity over making unrealistic campaign promises (Perez actually had Figo signed before he began his campaign pledge), stupidity over trying to tap up the best player in the world from the best team in Europe (you cant argue with that--at least for this year :)), stupidity over setting a price tag for Ronaldo, and now stupidity over keeping Emerson and paying his wages.....At this rate, I dont think he'll last long as Real president. After all, when they had a stable president---Lorenzo Sanz, they were changing coaches all the time, now they neither have a stable coach, nor a stable president/dynasty...

to be honest i can understand calderon. i don't like him at all but he has a point. emerson might not be the most popular player around but he is a champion and has proved how important he is at roma, juve and even in madrid where they didn't like him. in the last third of the season he played great for them (according to their fans).

so why should he ship him out for peanuts? he is not dealing with samp or some minor club but the champions of europe who may very well be a direct competitor for real in this years cl.

if galliani says it is emerson or none other because carlo only wants this player then we should spend some money. we all know how stubborn carlo is and when he dislikes a player he does not use him. get emerson here asap!

Unfortunately the poll didn't exactly have a option I liked so I couldn't vote. He is not ideal for us, but he is useful and most importantly wanted by Ancelotti. a manager should get players he want. emerson is well adjusted to Serie A and would help us quite a bit for the scudetto race and give players like Gattuso a rest.

Emerson: Please release me!
Saturday 18 August, 2007
After Real Madrid raised his price-tag to £8m, Emerson threatened the club if they don’t release him to join Milan.

The former Roma and Juventus midfielder was all ready to return to Serie A on loan when Real suddenly changed their minds, demanding a permanent move.

“I asked to be left behind when Real went to play the Carranza trophy. I knew Milan were about to come to Madrid for talks, so I preferred to stay here,” he confessed in the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport.’

“I thought everything was sorted out, but on Wednesday my agent called to say there were problems. He told me to stay calm and be patient, so I took his word for it. As I wait, I am back training with my teammates.”

Yet he is not a part of Coach Bernd Schuster’s plans and does not want to stay at the club that fired Fabio Capello.

“I have another two years on my contract with Real, but if I have the choice then I certainly want to leave. I have spoken of Milan many times, they are my objective.”

With the Rossoneri declaring this weekend they will not accept the new terms of this deal, ‘Puma’ is taking matters into his own hands.

“If Real do not lower their economic demands, they must be prepared to accept the responsibility and consequences of keeping me here.”

San Siro beckons either way, as Inter are also showing an interest in Emerson to reinforce their midfield.

“I know that Roberto Mancini spoke highly of me. I was told of this and obviously it is flattering, but I have not spoken to anyone.”

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug18i.html

seems he is fighting real with their own weapons. madrid have a history of demanding such things as strike from players so they can get them. i think that we will get emerson before august 31st.

Looks like he is on his way to Milan, a very good buy
Emerson is just hours away from leaving Real Madrid for Milan after Rossoneri chief Adriano Galliani headed out to Spain for his services.

The Vice-President boarded a plane for the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening after further negotiations over the Brazilian’s future took place this lunchtime.

FIFA agent Ernesto Bronzetti is understood to have revived a transfer which looked to have collapsed just a week ago after Madrid unexpectedly increased their asking price.

However, Bronzetti has convinced Real chief Ramon Calderon to lower his £8m valuation of the midfielder which has re-ignited the move.

Galliani will now hold talks with sporting director Predrag Mijatovic to draw up all the relevant papers and the player is set to imminently become a Milanista.

Whispers in the peninsula this evening claim that the European champions will net the former Roma and Juventus Scudetto winner for just under £4m.

Emerson, who made his mark in the European game with Bayer Leverkusen, was keen for a move after his transfer from Calciopoli hit Juve a year ago didn’t quite go to plan.

However, Fabio Capello – sacked by Real for Bernd Schuster earlier this summer – is convinced ‘Il Puma’ will get back to his former brilliant ways.

“I’m convinced that Milan have got themselves a great buy,” noted the out of work tactician after rumours of the deal emerged.

“After a season of highs and lows, Emerson will have a great desire to prove himself again and he will be a very important part of the Rossoneri machine. My compliments go to Milan.”

I'd be pretty pleased with Emerson, very good backup for Rino, Ambro and to lesser degree Pirlo. His physical game is exactly what we needed in midfield (I remember complaining about that I think after the 1st leg Man U match last season).

I also doubt this will affect Gourcuff much, I don't think he would ever figure in the same role as what we've got Emerson for.

ahaha. Well, I don't dislike him that much, I just think we could have done a lot better on our last transfer, but I'll stay happy we made any last transfer at all.. He was one of the best a couple years back, hopefully he finds his form again in Milan, like Ronnie did etcetc, now with barely a week left of the transfer market could there still be our big name striker :O , also, I think Aubameyang is ready to give it a go! I mean he'd be ideal until pato can play, and plus we can see how he does, it works perfectly, I mean we haven't many options upfront as far as forwards go,and the only ones possibly capable of UCL being Ronnie and Inzaghi, possibly Gila, Aubameyang probably wouldn't do much better in UCL because of no experience in it what so ever, but hey, great strikers play good no matter what, so give him a go :5ok:

nahh.. they both play in a different role. Milan bought Emerson just so that Gattuso can have a rest once a while. it's a good purchase imo.

Solid move overall, his proven in seria A, he can help us a lot in the scudeto race
This year most probably we are playing with one striker and three midfield players, and Ambro gets injured a lot,so Puma can cover that.plus he can give a rest to Rino and Pirlo too when needed.

Great back-up plan.

I'd rather use Emerson than Brochi, and we can field Em-Brochi to rest Amb-Gattuso before important matches.

He is not the most ideal signing for Milan, but he is certainly adding significant depth to our squad with his style of play, and also with the fact that he is going to be able to cover for many key players, such as Rino, Pirlo and Ambro...
I would NOT consider him a long term investment by any means, but I believe that he is a reasonable choice for the season ahead of us...

I do agree about emerson being a horrible signing, and not the nig player the management PROMISED, but your totally wrong bout Dida.

Seeing how big expetation on him, I would say we have had worse transfer but considering how he fitted to our bench that make our team so balance and strong between the first and second team in that time, I wouldn't say that.

Welcome to the family, Emerson. I see this signing as a clever investment in a player who can play in both Pirlo, Gattuso and Seedorf's position. That means we now have another card on our hands during a long season where anything can happen.

I feel safer now with Emerson in the squad. I hope that Gourcuff will still get his chances to play though.

For me Emerson is still in the top 5 of defensive midfielders in the world. He is strong, clever, powerful and tackles an opponent like nobody else, except few other players like Gattuso.

I'm very pleased we've signed him.

Tony75

He doesn't deserve to wear Billy's number. Top 5 defensive midfielders? HAHAHA. He's never been a good defensive mid, never mind top 5. He only fouls in mid. Power is an indication of speed & strength. emerson has no pace at all.

We got Dida in 99-00 if i remember correctly. He played like crap in the UCL, making howlers against Leeds and was loaned back to Corinthians for a year before he came back and was abbiati's sub until he manage to grab the place.

And who was his coach most of that time - Capello. Capello can sing his praises all he wants, but I've seen enough of him over the years to realise he's not good enough for all his hype. Always fails in Europe, way too slow for covering, always gives away "tactical fouls", due to being not good enough to do the job properly. And now he plays for my team. Hope he breaks a leg in training, and doesn't play a single game for us. Harsh, but I don't like him at all.

zlatanov
23-08-2007, 13:14
I think Emerson is one of the best holding mids for the past 10 years.
yes, Capello may sing praises, but also Capello is one of the most successful coaches ever, not for the past 10 years, but ever so it must count for something if the first player Capello starts building his teams from is Emerson.

Slow, ugly, call him whatever you guys feel like but Emerson has always been the spine of the teams he has played for and if he hasn't had success in Europe it's not his fault as an individual player but more fault of the teams he has played for.
Capello is not a coach who likes to rotate his players much and once he find the winning formation, he sticks to it, that's probably his main fault and main reason why his teams have no success in EUrope - in modern football, it's no longer possible to win a domestic league and CL by using the same set of players on both fronts, rotation is needed and that was Juve's problem under capello - there was no one to replace Emerson so he could rest ... and by March/April when the most important CL games were being played, Emerson and some other key players had been so over-used by then that they simply had no freshness in their legs to compete with Europe's best teams.

And the slump in Juve's form when Emerson was tired wasn't only on show in CL but in Serie A too and in my mind it only goes on to show how important he was for his team ... unfotunately for him, his role on the field is that of someone who always does the dirty work and never get's noticed unless for negative reasons - like getting a YC for a rough foul.

Tony29.

Emerson is the one you hate with passion when he plays for your rivals but he's also the one you'll respect a lot when he'll play for your team and when you'll see how bulletproof your midfield and defense are.

Very good post Zlat, btw.
in 2005/06 Capello was playing with 13 players the whole season. In late March and April they were all exhausted and they lost in CL + they had 5 draws in a row in serie A. The moment Emerson and Vieira couldn't give 100% due tiredness, Juve started playing bad.
In the beggining of the season, until March, Emerson-Vieira was the best partnership i've seen in my life. In some matches the defense had no work at all because these two were doing all the job defensively in midfield.

I don't know if Emo can still play at the same level, now that he's 2 years older than in 2005/06, but considering he won't have to play every single match Sunday-Wednesday for 90 minutes, i think he'll do great in those matches when he'll be given playing time.

He was also very highly rated in Leverkusen (according to the official site, that's when we initially wanted him).

I was never that keen on how Emerson played, but there's no doubt of my mind he's one of the best DM's of his generation. As wrong as it sounds to say this, his "dirty" methods of stopping opponents from building momentum during matches will be ideal for us.

We got him in 1999, he spent 99-00 w/Corinthians, where he won the FIFA Club World Cup. Brought him back, then we benched him after Leeds and the whole passport thingy, loaned back to Corinthians for 01-02, then took Abbiati's place in August 02 and the rest is history.

Finally, we get our man. Emo would be a fantastic addition to the squad. He is not a true midfield destroyer like Rino or Ambro, but more of a holding mid who makes an impact through his positional sense and passing rather than speed or solid tackling. This is why he gets away with his pace, or the lack thereof :)

Either way, Im happy. He can play anywhere in the middle three and I would love to see Rino Pirlo EMo as our starting midfield trio..

In Italy the coach often doesn't have much say in which players are bought, and usually at most only make suggestions as to what players the club needs. Then the management (Galliani, Braida and Berlu in our case) decide which player is the best to go for.

A bit of both. Obviously as the manager, Carlo has a say in transfers, but the management will always have the final say, and sometimes that may not be in tune with what Carlo wants, who then has to work with what he's given. However, I think Carlo has the respect and will often have the type of player he requests (Emerson for example). On the other hand, there's always the possibility the higher management have their own choices, like R10, who I doubt Carlo requested, but someone Berlu seems to want desperately.

It's totally different to England, where the manager is usually given an allocated sum of money to spend on what they feel will improve the squad.

I suppose its the way to go because it's them throwing down the bills, but they should go with carlos word more often ;)

Carlo has a pretty strong say these days imo, I think this summer's transfer campaign has shown that (Ancelotti made it clear he specifically wanted Pato and Emerson).
