What do you intend to use the laptop for? The more memory you can afford to get the better.

I would get a Mac, but as you know they're expensive, especially the memory. But you can always buy RAM from another place where it's cheaper ( crucial.com is a good place ). That might save you a bit of money.

It's good to have one for cross-platform testing and they're less likely to go wrong. Macs are great, but in the end i guess it's all aesthetical.

If you can do all you need to on the Vaio then get that instead of a Mac.

Id say get the Vaio and get the sexbox360 :D as well that way you get more for ya money is it really going to enhance anything you do just beacause its a MAC? id say no i think imo that MACS are overpriced for what they do yeah they look good but i done see why there better than a good Sony or HP laptop.

even better get a PS3 so a can cream u online at pro evo 6 (if u have it?) :grinser:

Given what Graeme is studying, what he does for work and what he wants to do in the future i think a Mac is a truly valid option.

Macs aren't for everyone, but as they're used by a ridiculously high percentage of the design industry i think getting one is a serious choice for any designer.

Plus i think your comments show you know nothing about this topic.

thats the problem, they are used by a ridiculously high percentage of people in the web/graphic design field. But too be honest im not sure entirely why either, alot of the adobe software is available. But maybe its the whole reliablity, support and easy interface with them. i feel left out :grinser:

The new laptop is a replacement for my naff flimsy acer laptop which has got a battery life of all of 16 minutes. I will mainly use it for typing my up disertation so word documents, for work (flash + dreamweaver + photoshop + illustrator) for work. Plus maybe even a bit of 3d if i can. i would just like something fairly good, nice design with a good battery so i can go to a coffee shop for a couple of hours and not worry about it dying afte 10 minutes.

As much as i want a mac i dont know if i can really afford £800 atm. Maybe if i get some more money after xmas i will get one. But that is alot of money, like car money :grinser: lol

i asked my south african work mate what she would get if she was me, she said to get both :grinser:

Battery life that short means the battery is shot. Happened to our wireless cart at school--we had to replace all the batteries over the summer!

I'm not a Mac person, never was. I know the excuse is that oh you can do all this design stuff on Macs, but the playing field has been moe levelled as I understand. My suggestion is, can you find a less expensive brand that has the same functionality? And is easy to upgrade? to me it's like iPods vs MP3 players--you're paying for the name.

I have the same problems too when choosing a new labtop.
there are some things to consider like some of u have mention here.

I have been asking some friends who owned mac. They never regretted stepping to the other side. if you are into graphics sort of thing i will say yes, go get a mac.
I am a freelance photographer and owning a mac helps.
And another thing, mac is virus free :5ok:

Do ask around and test, it will be easier for u to make a decision. good luck!

As pretty much every piece of the major design software is owned by Adobe now, you can get it all easily on Macs. 3d software though is one of the few differences between Macs & Pcs. On a Mac the best software to get is Maya and it's pretty much used as the industry leader in 3d, however it does seem a bit more complex to get to grips with than say 3dsmax which is PC only. 3dsmax is also used heavily in special FX and is alot easier to use (that's what i think anyway).

When it comes down to it there isn't a great deal of difference really. Macs are more reliable, built better and don't crash as often. However you have to counter act that with the insane price you would have to pay to get one with a decent amount of RAM. Having said that though you can go on their site and get student discount, not sure how much that work out to though.

A PC laptop will obviously be cheaper and in terms of processors it should be the same as now Intel make the Mac processors. For what you want to do on it (dreamweaver, flash, illustrator, photoshop & writing documents) you might as well stay with a PC laptop for now.

Another thing is how badly you want that Xbox 360 :D

If I may offer another perspective, obviously only my (likely minority) opinion.

Macs are extremely over rated, I do not own one but other member of family does and for an operating system not as affected by virus/spyware the 'updates' are needed often, which I don't really get. Usability-wise MacOSX is not more reliable, this XP I am using to type this hasn't let me down once - gone are the days of Win98, ME although Vista by most accounts is not good - so even at zero issues (crashes, etc.), which is not true, the OS X is at best equal to XP in my experience.

Like its been mentioned only use Mac if its needed in your specialized field, otherwise its hype.

no for once Rezag i your not alone i dont really see what is so great about Macs, i think they dont live upto the hype or pricetag.

I got my vaio last friday and so far ive been pretty impressed with the laptop itself, Vista has been a bit of a b**ch really...

The laptop itself is great, the sony screens are wicked and the design of it looks just as good as a mac! however there is alot of rubbish pre- installed by sony and you have to turn all the vistas baby security off in order to do anything. Im tempted to do a format at some point and just put all the stuff i want back on there. Oh yeah connecting to my wireless for the first time was a pain, but its been ok since!

I would like to get some more memory at some point as i worry about having too much running at the same time. That isnt the vaio, its just vista. For the money its a thousand times better than my last laptop! if u can afford it, try and get a core duo 2 cpu!
