Galliani tactiques.... Today i spoke with a friend of mine who is Greek-Italian (He is Juventus  and he grow up at Italy). He told me that Galliani said to Ultras of Milan that the team will no go for Serie A but for CL and Toyta cup which bring money to the team. As a responce the fans asked the prices of tickets in Serie A games to be reduced but they took a negative responce to their demand. So our board cares only for CL just why they didn't spend any money on transfers....

Do you reall think he said this to the ultras ?
I'm 100% sure he didn't say it.

If he did then it's immature, insulting the fans and he deserves to be fired right away.

I believe him because her mother is from Italy and he was working there for sports so he is in touch. That's one of the reason why the relationship between the board and the ultras is not good the last months and this is not a secret.

Although I am a major Galliani hater, I still doubt he actually said that. This is not the kind of stuff you say to fans period. You keep that crap between the chosen few and no more than that. I do think there is certain validity to CL and Toyota cup being our main target because of the money though. It should be pretty obvious that money is more important to this team nowadays than glory. Even though that money never got spent on the team.

It doesnt surprise me if he did say it. In not so many words, he's said in the past that Milans main objective is the Champs league.

The Ultras wouldnt be making a mountain out of a mole hill, and the story about free tickets is rubbish as alot of die hard Milan fans will pay anything to see Milan play every week. And to be honest, i would be very disapointed if i payed good money to see Milan play the last 5 games or so.

It doesnt take a genius to work out Milan dont fancy Seria A, its pretty Obvious by the way they did'nt reinforce the squad during the summer.

And yeah i dislike Galliani aswell, just because he is soo un-professional and makes promises that he cant deliver.

Where do you get the idea that money isnt spent on the team, when we have the highest wage bill (if not one of the highest) in the Serie A?

Thats money being spent amigo....we may not have splashed the cash in the transfer market as we would all have liked, but just how easy do you think it is for a club (not talking about Berlu´s money now) to spend major dollars on the transfer market, and meet wage bills, and other recurrent expenditure?

US$80M is the annual budget for some small countries, and we spend that on player salaries alone.

If/when Berlu decides to splash out some mediaset cash, that is his perogative...and if he wants Ronaldinho, and is saving his money for that...then, he is saving his money, and thats that. End of story.

Prestige is what Berlu´s club plays for...the money to be had from the UCL, and World Club Cup isnt to be scorned at, nor is it the be-all and end-all of our targets.

Winning the Serie A is important for the fans, the players, and the club, but I would give up the Serie A title every time for the Champion´s League...because the UCL is more prestigious, and there is the small, but important aspect of monetary returns...that the Serie A doesnt give, worse with the new TV money arrangements.

Its all well and good to sit in our armchairs and criticise Berlu, Galliani and Co...but I rather have a club that is fiscally solvent, and wins the UCL every 3 years or so, than a club that wins the Serie A with the same frequency, and does little or nothing in Europe....and is constantly in financial problems.

I respect your opinion just so you know that but just because we won the CL does´t mean it wont hurt losing to teams that has a 30% budget compared to us! I want the Seria A not the CL (If it not comes like a bonus) because soon other teams are going to say -yeah but you only go for one competition, its not good! If we cant compete with the best in Italy then it´s bad...Galliani go for the Serie A and stop this scared running away from Italy and hide some were in Europe stuff, take Inter and Roma by the horns and show them who´s the boss! And start today.

Giorgios, my friend from Greece, land of the culture,
do you want i believe in a fanciful greek-italian boy
which heart is beating for rubentus?
Really? :sweeteye:

So.... :1five: please, let your friend live his talk big.
Palermo is only a stage-race.
Sad, we lost.
And it's even more bitter when you deserve to win.
It's happened, maybe it will happen again in this season
but it doesn't mean that Milan won't fight for the title.
And i don't love Galliani, even if he gained some respect especially during the last 2 seasons (after Istambul, after Sheva's destabilizing transfer, after calciopoli..... )
sorry, by the way, maybe i'm wrong but if you want to go to CL you have to arrive at least at 4th place. Isn't it?
maybe your striped friend has forget this insignificant detail: why don't you try to ask him where Juve will arrive at the end of this season? :devf:

The fact that we have the highest salary bill in Serie A is exactly why this management should be retired by now. We have less world class talent and less depth overall to our squad and yet we have a higher salary bill than Inter. How the hell did that happened? Oh, I don't know, paying over the hill players such as Dida 4 million a year sure as hell isn't helping the matter.

Money being spent on market is not just something fans would have liked but a necessity. This team is one of the oldest team in soccer world today and maybe history. Certain positions lack the depth to play so many games a season. But while our main competitors spend on the market big every summer and reinforced their squad, we sit on our asses and talking about how great our 40 year olds used to be. The way to build a winning team is by having a great foundation and then add pieces to that foundation piece by piece. Even if your team is complete, you still should add more pieces to it just to add something new to your style of play. But look at us, this team has gone from the best team in Europe they were 6 years ago to a team who is now worse than Roma. What happened? Don't we have a good foundation? Of course we do. But this whole foundation doesn't have the necessary surrounding talent around it nowadays. Every time Nesta, Pirlo and Kaka goes to the bench, the whole team just tumbles down. No top team in the world should be relaying on their star players this much and this dependence is all because of a lack of depth and talent on the roster.

You want to talk about how our budget is a lot, but a lot is a very vague term. You have to compare our budget to those of our competitors to realize how big or small it truly is. While our main competitors in Europe and Italy such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Barcelona, Chelsea and Inter spend big on transfer market every year or at least bring in a few quality players every summer, what the hell did we do? Sure, we are still spending more money than Serie B teams, but that is not much of a damn standard. And that is the bottomline here. We are not improving but our competitors are and now we are behind them looking up and hoping we can get lucky and beat them once.

And who the hell told you that CL is more prestige than Serie A? Where the hell did you get that from? You look at Serie A winners and almost every year it is a top team worldwide winning it. And then you look at the CL. Teams like Porto and Liverpool can win the whole damn thing. How prestige is that?

The part that I hate about professional soccer had always been its involvement with money. Money destroyed the real soccer. Players are no longer in it for the love and passion any more but much rather the big paycheck. Owners aren't concerned about glory any more but much rather looking at the damn books all day long. A soccer team's priority is to win, but to make money. If you or Berlusconi is only concerned about making this team profitable, then the both of you should stay the hell away from this team. Because most Milan fans still wants to see more trophies coming our way instead of becoming a more profitable team.

I think there has been a misunderstanding here, and I will attempt to clear it up.

My point, in summary, is this:

In an age where finances can determine the very existence of a club, and keep it at the highest levels, it is important, no the single most important aspect of a clubs ultimate day to day targets...because, in this day and age, a club is a business...and has to be self-sustaining, if it is to exist in the long term.

I prefer a financially prudent team, to one that can disappear because, as in the Leeds story, owners were putting things like jacuzzi´s in their offices, instead of balancing the books.

And who the hell told you that CL is more prestige than Serie A? Where the hell did you get that from? You look at Serie A winners and almost every year it is a top team worldwide winning it. And then you look at the CL. Teams like Porto and Liverpool can win the whole damn thing. How prestige is that?

Sorry about the tone, buddy. I am just a little tired of hearing Galliani and Berlusconi using that CL vicotry to defend their cheapness every time and kind of lost control of my typing. Very sorry about that, that tone was not necessary.

The thing is, you are right about finance being a very important part of any soccer club nowadays. But when you compare our team to every other team our class worldwide, our budget seems to be a lot smaller for some reason. If every other team can get the money needed for new signings, why can't we? I mean, let's not compare ourselves to Real Madrid and Chelseas given that those two teams are just insane with money, but let's compare ourselves to teams like Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter. These teams don't exactly piss their money away for nothing but they still have more money than us to spend. Why is that? We have one of the best records in the CL over the last five years, which means we get a lot of extra cash from the CL comparing to the three teams I just mentioned. But where did all that money go? If teams like Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter can keep their book balanced enough to sign new players and not having to make it that far in the CL every year, then what happened to us? It just doesn't make any sense that even after winning the lost lucrative CL in history last year, we still end up spending 1/3 of what every other top team in Europe spend on the market. And that is all I am saying.

Let me state first that I'm in the camp that demands some degree of personnel changes in the team, especially in the rearguard, where the collective age is something ridiculous.

But with transfer fees and buyout clauses at the levels they are now due to egotistical and meddling oligarchs and businessmen, you can understand on one level our management's timidity in the market lately. Burlusconi and Co. want- no, demand-guaranteed and immediate success from new signees. This approach makes good business sense.

That being said, Milan needs to closely look at the Arsenal model. Hire people who have a great eye for young talent, sign them long-term and cheaply, and then season their raw skills playing open, entertaining football. Couple this policy with a brand spanking new stadium, and lo and behold people in the red section of North London are wiping their rear ends with newly minted cash.

This in my opinion is the one and only way of getting it done on the pitch and off.

Mystik

Buying youngsters doesn't give you short term success though and Milan fans as Galliani rightfully put it, are spoilt. The Arsenal model of playing nice football and 'almost winning' would never cut it for us. We need to find the balance somewhere in between keeping experience and youth that can give success in someway or other season after season.

Galliani has made comments suggesting that we will soon follow or are currently following an Arsenal model. A bunch of players under 19 were bought this past summer for the youth teams or to otherwise be loaned out. So I can assume that we won't be spending too much money on superstars in the future but rather try to create our own. How far down the line is that future? I'd guess we'll know if this venture has paid off in about 5 years time. Till then this current squad will probably be phased out with a few new faces coming in each year. Milan in 5 years will look drastically different from the Milan today. My take on things.

Interesting that the debate has evolved as per above, and in this interview with Wenger, some more interesting points:

It's not an accident that one of your former clubs, Nancy, is leading the French league, having the smallest turnover of players over the past three seasons.

[Visibly very interested] Well, that's a real lesson. There is such a thirst in this society for new things, that there is the tendency to throw things away because you want something else. You forget the magic of team sport stems also from the development of a group of players who come together for a certain length of time. For example, take this young Arsenal team... It has matured together. Which also means it has suffered together; it's important to share the pain. Think of the disappointments of last year and, in spite of all that, I felt they turned the corner. When we've been knocked back - walked into a head-wind, so to speak - we've never given up, we've always fought on. And I told myself, hang on, there is something growing here, a mental force that will astonish everyone even more when things are going well.

What I find of note, is that Wenger (and importantly the hierachy of the club) has the bravery to stick with a plan, that though in 10 years, has only led to 2 EPL titles, has produced a wonderful brand of football, and one of the best teams in European football today.

The question we have to ask ourselves, is: Are we willing to make this sort of sacrifice, or do we want success every single year?

The question we have to ask ourselves, is: Are we willing to make this sort of sacrifice, or do we want success every single year?

Define success. One piece of silverware a year? One every other year? Finanacial solvency? High visibiity from aggressive marketing?

You can't win it all, all of the time. What I do love, and let's get into this ladies and gentlemen, is entertaining, dazzling, and inspiratonal football. To me the performance counts above all other things. The trophies, cash, adoration around the globe, in turn will take care themselves.

So Warro, I'm willing to make this sort of sacrifice. Yeah. Hell yeah.

Isn't that what life is about? You build and build and build and then eventually the buildup (hopefully for not too long a period of time) explodes into something undescribably delicious. Besides, like I said before you can't win it all, all of the time. If that happened football would be boring.

It is because, to me, this phrase sumarizes how most of the members are posting in recent times that I don't feel like writing anymore... :d55:

You have to see the big picture of Milan... not the start of the season...

I fully support our management... I believe in their transfer policy for this summer... in signing Pato even if he can play just after January... in continue to play Gila upfront...

I do think we will need new blood next summer... maybe one reinforcement in the winter... but Milan is not just a trend... is not just 6 games, or even just a season... I wouldn't make a big deal if we had a "bad season" meaning "maybe winning Intercontinental Cup, or not, and no Scudetto, no Coppa Italia" just hopefully going to UCL next year...

Even great clubs need to breathe... a year to clear off their thoughts, and regain real ambition... even fans need it, to remember winning is sweet, not just an obligation...

Still, I believe we will recover and pursue the Scudetto and do well in UCL even if we don't win it... but we just might...

Last year, and even much further down the road -after January- people were bashing everybody from Ancelotti, to Galliani, to the players... and we won UCL and everybody was saying - I always believed -

Except 2 or 3 people, like Kui who always said we would still win the UCL...

See you in May... we'll talk then and compare.

lol actually Warro its 3 PL titles 1998, 2002, 2004, ask any Arsenal fan out there and they will tell you that its been like hell being trophy less for many years not winning the league since 2004 and the last major silverwear being won was in 2005. Wenger has had a lot of stick and its always been the fans – the boardroom never interfered as they knew he would be too hard to replace (he has had a much bigger role than your average Manager from controlling the diets of the players to designing the changing rooms and dugouts at the Emirates stadium). He has changed everything at the club and the youth team that he has set up has taken many years. I remember when Roman bought Chelsea he was looking at buying Arsenal first but the club told him that they didn’t want his money and he started looking elsewhere. Hes probably the only manager I know who makes a profit rather than loss every summer and his youth policy I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Fair enough its not been good years over the last few years and alot of pundits doubted Arsenal would even make the top 4 (including me), but so far it looks like it paid off.

I remember last year when Henry, Persie were injured he gave the young players a chance to prove that they could handle the pressure and they did ok. They played good against the top teams but struggled against the smallers ones. Wenger hardly ever lets first teamers in the carling cup and its always the reserves with the average age of 21, could Milan do this? Possibly but Ancelotti needs to bring a lot of changes and give them more assistance. Over the last few years ive watched some of the first team players play in the reserves and develop e.g when Cesc, Persie first arrived. That is the way Wenger has worked with the youngsters and given them a chance. Both clubs are different, Arsenal are in massive debt but should be free in 2/3 years and they required methods of making money/buying cheap players and this was the easiest way out by buying young and keeping the best, Milan don’t require money they have Berlusconi however its always good to have a young team, Milan should give the young team a chance and it will pay them back but can they wait? They are a big club, much bigger than Arsenal and are expected to win every season whilst at Arsenal the developing period could be seen, and Wenger forgiven for the lack of trophies. The track record of Arsenal in Europe has not been great but its always difficult to win in Europe, Ferguson respectively has had 15/16 seasons in Europe and only ever walked away with 1 CL.

You don't lose prestige, you add to it over time and using your logic, Milan must be a second rate club too as we've only won the league twice in the past 10 years, that's hardly anything to rave about.

Warro, you said would we be willing to sacrifice annual success for entertaining football, but where is the sacrifice? When was the last time we were seriously challenging on all fronts? We dismiss the Coppa Italia before it starts, our league challenge has been growing weaker since our last success in 03-04 and all we're left with is the Russian roulette gamble that is the CL.

We're not winning year in year out, so it's not much of a sacrifice to me. Milan is a club frightened of change, we'll never know how successfull we might be until we take the plunge and invest strongly in younger players. If we had a go and failed, then fair enough, at least we had the courage to change things as competing on 3 fronts is beyond this squad at the moment.
