I really pray not to qualify for the next Champions League.
This is the only way for the big duo to understand that the way they think they will destroy Milan. I am tired of reading that Milan wants Toni, Zambrotta etc, players with no actual motivation to play the game. What will happen if we make the 4th spot is they will say 'another year of trophies and the chance to win the champions league', we will believe them and we will again try to reach the fourth spot. In the past we were fighting with Juventus. Now, with Fiorentina and Palermo. And we believe things like 'we were concetrated in the Club World Cup'. Its just TWO games! How can one season be based on two games? For just two games we may play in UEFA next year? And buy another 30 year old ex-superstar. Milan used to create their own stars. We loved Boban, Leonardo, Weah, Van Basten, Shevchenko, Kaka, Pirlo, Maldini etc because we witnessed their ascent in the Milan jersey. That;s missing in Milan right now. It only happened with Pato.
So please, an UEFA Cup spot next year! This is the only way. We deserve being out. It's like justice. We made crimes for our future, we shall pay. And btw, summer of 2001, when Milan would play for UEFA, was the most spending one, Rui Costa, Inzaghi, Contra etc. Since then, with an exception of the next one with Nesta and Rivaldo and Seedorf, the absolute nothing. One player at a time, and besides Kaka, Pato and Gourcuff, all above the age of 30. We even signed Cafu at 33 for 2 years and we still count him. Jesus!
Please Fiorentina, make us pay. We deserve it.

Bayern made their (and one of the biggest ever) spending summers with no CL. As long as Berlusconi and Galliani are willing to do it even the names mentioned in the fantasy thread are up for grabs.

of course. maybe CL is so important for a few players like Toni, who haven't played in it... it's more important for Berlusconi because he will have to spend more of his money and we know that he doesn't love that...

isnt Toni playing for Bayern for another 2/3 seasons atleast? :/

and we could any player if the management is willing to spend...

the only way milan will not sign players is to drop down to 12th place or lower..

If we show the money we can buy anyone (that "important players only go when you are playing CL football" argument has been proven wrong this season with Bayern).

And second, I would like us to try to win it. We have never won it, and I'm still bitter about the 2002 semifinal.

First of all I am still 99% sure that ACM will be in the CL final next season. I can even give the name of 2 finalists of 2009. It would be AC Milan vs Bayern Munich or AC Milan vs Lyon. But say some how we don't qualify, then I am 100% sure that ACM would win the Scudetto & the UEFA Cup & personally I prefare to see Paolo MAldini lifting 2 titles instead of 1 :p283: :510: :p283:

It is sad if we don't go in CL next year ... with that final game normally in Roma (not sure yet, Platini said that if there still were problems in Roma, for example against MU, they would look for another stadium for the 2009 CL final).

If Milan is in UEFA, it will personnally be less games to watch ... because UEFA Cup is so boring (I'm saying that now, but if we go for it, I'm pretty sure I will watch anyway lol).

Like I said another time, UEFA Cup is a lot of matches, more than CL, and you often play against East Europe clubs ... so with our current team, we would be eliminated quickly, and if we wouldn't be so, we would be bad in Serie A.

So CL or nothing please (just Serie A and no excuse to lose) !!

Can we choose not to play Uefa Cup and play only domestic matches?

GeoTav
02-04-2008, 10:27
Yes of course, actually, even when you qualify for the CL, you may refuse the qualification ... quite stupid in this case because CL allows the club to earn money, and players like this competition, so no club refuses that.

But for UEFA Cup, I don't remember any team refusing to play it directly, but I remember French teams who refused to play Intertoto (the first matches in summer) and so UEFA Cup ...

Anyway, even if for me, I'd rather a CL spot or nothing, I don't think that our management would refuse an UEFA Cup qualification: it's still an European cup (low level anyway until semi-finals/final) and as a consequence, that can attract some players ...

Guys, if we didn't play in the UEFA cup that would be a total insult to UEFA and to football; it is also a sure sign of major snobbery. Think about what you are saying-Milan should be so selfish that we chose to opt out of a european competition? All along, everyone says Milan is great, Milan is passion...well Milan is great and passion wherever we play. Are you going to opt out of Serie B because it's "beneath us?" Give me a break. All I know is if Milan don't play in the Uefa Cup, we will be looked at as sore losers and pathetic.

GeoTav
05-04-2008, 08:45
With some good signings, we could play all competitions ... but if the team is approximately the same that it is this year, so I'd rather insulting UEFA and football ... lol

=> All depends of your objectives and your players, if you have enough players to play all competitions, so do it, if you don't have enough players, you're suicidal to play them all.

Anyway, we will play UEFA Cup if we get qualified for this poor and boring competition instead of CL.

Fiorentina's hardest two games come against Palermo and Sampdoria which are both home, and they play Cagliari away in what could be a tough one..

We need Fiorentina to fail to win in 2 of the remaining 5, given the fact that we have won all our 5 games ofcourse.. Doesnt sound too hard right? No it doesnt, but when you take a look at our 5 games, then you will see that these 5 games could be even harder than the 5 games we won in last year's CL that gave us the trophy..

3 of the 5 games will be against Inter, who are superior to us and are fighting for the title... another game against Udinese who are trying to get into the CL and are no walk in the park... and then we have a game at one of the hardest stadiums in Serie A, we will be playing in the San Paolo against Napoli.

I am not too confident but will not give up hope just yet

Next season we can play for UEFA cup, Italian cup, serie a and the European supercup after we win UEFA... If we dont paly CL we need to go for all of these trophys. But Inter and Juve AND Roma will be stronger then this year, serie a in generall will be stronger, so Milan will not be good enough with just Dinho, old Sheva and Zambro...

We will see, but if some player doesnt want to play for Milan becouse of one season without CL, then he is not welcomed in any sence in the end. There are a lot of players who are ready for Milan: Barzagli, Mexes, Cigarini, Aquilani, Montolivo, Dossena...and are all great players.

When was the last time we failed to finish in the top four?
Season 2000/2001
Milan finished 6th back then. Bierhoff-Shevchenko played in attack,Leonardo, Albertini and Boban were still playing. Gattuso was very young and everyone though "WTF is this guy doing in football".
Comandini was considered a great talent but he failed. Jose Mari was a flop,Redondo came as a huge signing but he was injured before the start of the season. Chamot, Sala and Roque Junior were a real disaster in defense. Ibrahim Ba had a bad season, Serginho and Ambrosini were solid and i still don't know what were guys like Guglielminpietro and Giunti doing in a team like Milan.
I think the manager was Cesare Maldini, but i'm not sure, because it may have been a year with Zaccheroni at the helm.

yes - direct games. if that doesnt settle it then its goal difference, but we are covered.

Hey, you can be the new Bayern Munchen of the next season of the UEFA Cup :D

When you think about it, you have vaguely similar circumstances, both big teams, going into transition, the cathc i sthat Bayern have now completed their transition, you are beginnning, take from Bayern a lesson, no seriously take them as an example

That's of course if you don't finish in the top four, we gave you a chance, a lifeline, but if you don't manage at least to tie points with La Viola by the time the derby comes you could be in deep trouble because who knows what will happen in the derby.

frey(12m pounds) - pretty much a question of when. not if.

santacroce/zapata(8m) - no newsflash here

senderos(6m) - i think italian is the only language he doesnt know but the serie a is a much better match for his attributes, imo.

de silvestri(7m) - rb of the future and i think another case like frey.

flamini(free) - will be hard to get w/o champs league, to entice him, but milan should go all out to get him as he is currently a free agent. (if not then l.diarra(7m) from portsmouth.)

adriano(9m) - another one to add to the brazilian contingent and reminds me very much of serginho.

cigarini(10m) - another case like frey.

gomez(12m) - great poacher and excellent top speed.

---------------frey--------------
de silvestri-nesta-santacroce-adriano

We already threw away our advantage in our league position earlier this year when we were 4th.

Also, this year we've thrown away a lot of advantages in matches. Examples include Roma (1-0 up to lose 2-1), Inter (1-0 up to lose 2-1) and Juve (2-1 up to lose 3-2).

Ok, Siregar I know you won't like this but in these 2 games we paid the price because our COACH did make mistakes, first in Roma when he subbed Seedorf who was the best player in the game and was NOT injured with fatty Emerson and even when Emerson entered the pitch he should have told him to play as DM and give Pirlo more freedom to go forward but, he did not and he played infront of Pirlo which was really ununderstandble, and the second in Torino when he played with useless Simic, he could have played with Ambro in defence and poor Gorky in the midfiled

No, it's not Carlo's fault but it's Carlo who made Milan able to play well like in those two games. Plese remember that before Roma match we were in awful condition.

I, myself, still blame boards not giving Carlo enough fuel (players) to face Serie A, CL, World Club Cup and Coppa in this season! Again, I still say, it is stupid for people who just fill in a tank with 50 liter gasoline but he knows the distance they have to go is 100 km (boards knew that we would face tons of games and they 'didnt' do anything at the beginning of the season but they still moaned about tired players!). But it's idiot not to fill in the tank again in the middle of the journey when they are able to fill in the thank (winter transfer)!

defintly they are mistaken but he is more mistaken then them I mean in the begining of the season he should insisited than he needs new players, he shouldn't have said some thing like Milan and Inter will compete for Lo Scodettuo and Roma will be behined them while the entire world knows that Milan don't have a big and deep squad for such champioship, imagine if it was some one like Cappello who was in charge would he accept something like this? will any coach in the world plays against Parma, Torino, Genoa and a likes at home with a lone striker and 3 DM!

The management made a mistake by not bringing younger players to the team, that's for sure, but Carlo made a bigger mistake by not asking and insisting on that, that's why he must be blamed.

That's not Carlo's mistake IMO. We are not a club that let Coach moan like Maurinho did. I dont know maybe that's Carlo's type that accept the condition he has and utilizes the best he can what he has.

Actually Carlo did say things about players he wanted to but I dont know if he asked the boards to buy those players (Tony, Ribery for example). Some news said Tony was vetoed by Berlusconi.

About tactic using 3 DM, I think it's again because of lack of squad dept and decent players. We cant force Seedorf to play in his old position and we can't expect so highly from Gourcuff either. If Carlo has attacking player like old-Seedorf to play in midfield, I am sure Carlo will play him there. Remember, Carlo used Seedof and Pirlo plus ONLY 1 DM (Gattuso) for his tactic with 2 strikers for years and there was a time the fullbacks were Serginho and Cafu (I doubt other Coach would do that except Rijkaard). So, it's only matter of having players IMO.

^ I agree

for short term, yes it is bad to play in UEFA cup, but for long term I think It will do us good coz it will give us time to consolidate (with new players) without having too much pressure on the team.

just hope that the management sign good players as promised. 4 or 5 are fine, with atleast 1 or 2 good signings in the following seasons.

I like what you guys are thinking about.
We do not deserve the 4th spot, we do not deserve to compete in UCL next season.

Milan is bad this season, I can't find the differences between AC Milan, The 6times UCL winner, and Siena.

I wish next season, we will be an AC Milan again.

Ofcourse fiorentina deserve it more, they are in fourth spot and they dont have the finances we have nor do they have world-class players that we have.

Fio deserves the forth place because of finances and having-world-class point of view? Liverpool, Arsenal etc (lower/smaller club) will then tell Milan (CL's Winner 2007), Barca (CL's winner 2006) that they deserved the CL more because they didnt have money as much as Milan and Barca and they also had fewer world-class player.

I am still in my statement that if Milan and Fio get same points, the deserved team is the team who is better between them (goal difference and face-to-face result).

The team that has the most points at the end of the next match will deserve it. Fio may not have the financial power and resources we have, but in the end it’s the results that count.

I don't know what you guys think but, for me playing in Uefa Cup would be another experience on par with playing with Champions league.

As you may have noticed, Uefa cup has gotten very exiciting in the recent years. Some of the exciting matches that have taken place in the past:
-2008: Zenit vs Bayern & Rangers vs Fiorentina (at least or Rangers' fans)
-2007: Espanyol vs Sevilla (The final minutes were spectacular)
-2006 should be considered as an exception because Mcclaren the then manager of Middlesborough had signed for England as a result Middlesborough were disoriented against Sevilla.
-2005: Sporting vs CSKA (This was the best match in the last five years of UEFA cup history. Sporting (I think) were probably the first team in the history of the cup to play a final on their home turf. It was just a co-incidence. CSKA, in spite of being the only Russian team to have ever been in the final and playing it at the opponents home, beat Sporting 3-1. This was when talents like Vagner Love and Daniel Carvalho were first recognized.

These are just some matches on top of my head. There might be many more exciting matches.

Trust me guys, if we do end up qualifying for Uefa, we will have a great time watching matches because they are so unpredictable. Yes it will be humiliating but once you realize the magic of this great cup you will forget about everything.

Seeing that we will be adding a sizeable amount of new players, UEFA cup will serve as a stepping stone towards playing more important matches in UCL in the following years.

Also, some of the teams which have played in the UCL in recent years have had same opponents. For eg: Chelsea Barcelona, Milan Liverpool, Man U Roma, Chelsea Liverpool, etc.

Lets not be so pessimistic about this tournament. After all we create out destiny and we should accept the consequences of our actions.

So what do you guys think? :5ok:

The only thing we should do in the UEFA is win it, like we should have not so long ago if it wasn't for a collapse. It's not a glamorous tournament, and it obviously lacks the revenue of the CL but if we are made to play in it then we should target nothing but glory. If there are a few good matches on the way all the better.

It's the only trophy missing from our huge display cabinet and we'd be part of the Exclusive club that have won CL, UEFA and Cup Winners Cup. :)

Well UEFA Cup football next season is a reality. I must agree with Gianni. I'm rather looking forward to it. It means we can aim for the Scudetto without the CL to distract us. If we were to win the UEFA Cup next season we would also have a shot at another european supercup.

carletto called it a purgatory; for me that says it all. Ac milan will lose a lot of money by playing eufa cup,and alot of top quality players would not want to join a team that is playing in a mikey mouse cup,but that is our destiney for now,so let's make the best of it.The scudetto it is next season.

Ambrogirl dont worry about players, good players will come for sure, players which will not come are not a great players, (i mean Amauri) that kind of players are not great, they only want to be a name that someone will remeber (i dont think so).
So baby, dont worry, Ronaldinho will come for sure and other players, remeber my words.
After all, Uefa cup is not a such a little deal. Another trophy, easy trophy in very tough concuration it will be great.

I'm feeling like it will be a good adventure for us next year. Remember back in the 90's when there was a real mix of teams-we played Salzburg in 94 i think...it will give us humility and a fresh approach to the seriousness of the scudetto and reaching the CL. I watched the uefa cup all year, and i enjoyed seeing the different teams and teams really going for it without as much pressure; and i want to add it to our trophy cabinet too!

It's not so bad that we lost 4th place. It gives us breathing room and it will be easier for the younger players we will bring in. It's easier for, let's say, Paloschi to play in UEFA Cup than CL. There is less pressure.

And it allows the group to grow. :)

Yet they came pretty close, besides Zenith played on a champions leaugue level (they will play CL next season). We should learn from that, we can win it but we shouldn't underestimate any team in the knock out fase. Some people may call it the Micky Mouse cup but I certanly don't agree. Scudetto should be our main objective but winning this cup means we played wel and are still among Europes best. Especially if it means we can forget this lousy season.

What makes me worry is the fact that UEFA Cup match is scheduled to be played on Thursday. Given our current team, we will struggle to regain the fitness to play serie A games on Sunday. And with the slow start at the beginning season, at the second half of the season the pressure will become almost unbearable.

jtelly
22-05-2008, 11:52
I don't worry too much about that Nalx. I think we'll have a much more balanced team with rotations. Kaka' will not be playing every single UEFA cup game, like he had to in the CL. It will be a good chance to blood youngsters, and the psychological pressure is not as high. Plus, all signs I get are that the team next year has goal number 1 as the scudetto. Look at Bayern, they just seem to be the easiest template to compare with, as they reloaded their squad, enjoyed a good cup run, and bossed the league. My feeling from what I've read regarding their losing in the uefa cup is something along the lines of "oh well, we won the league and are back where we belong, it was fun, see ya in the real deal". Milan can cope with this, unless we get drawn a group that includes matches in Siberia, Finland, and some other horrible conditions to travel.
I have a feeling we are going to rampage at the beginning of the year, and like there might be a deal with Carlo such as "If you are not in the top 3 and more than 5 behind the leaders, you are gone". This will eliminate the horrible starts that we've suffered. Plus, there won't be CL qualifying, and we'll see how the players return from EURO 2008. We'll be better at the start or carlo is sacked this year i'm sure.

We wont focus in UEFA as we've done in 2001/02 with Carlo. Normally we concentrate more in CL (means we dont use important players in Leauge's games before CL's games if the recovery time is too short) then in UEFA is the opposite. We will save our stars' energy in UEFA matches for Serie A games (if the time between UEFA game and Serie A game is too short).

why cant we focus on both? i read everyone is saying we wont focus on uefa and only on the league but we cant we do both...that will really show our worth instead of concentrating on 1 single thing every eyar why not multiple like the coaches and mangament promise us every season? look at Man u...they win the league and the CL they also made it far in the FA cup...Carling cup...while we make up excuses and go for one single thing...when will we ever be like the old milan? where we could litterly challenge on all fronts....

they were unfortunetely met Zenit. who knows that they looked like a hurted lion when they played. well deserved, Zenit was awesome.

i wont say this UEFA Cup isn't the priority. well.. to cocky if you say that. because history tells many big teams failed to won that. lets just say we will meet different clubs and different styles of football. the one that has to stick in our head that higher probability that we will meet the club that we never see them playing before. that's the challenge. i think the key when Zenit won the cup before met Rangers and beat Bayern is also because of that. surely, Zenit players and coach often see Bayern plays in Bundesliga. but Bayern .. i dont think they will even think "wow.. today is Zenit's game, gotta get my TV and catch for it" that's why they never knew how Zenit plays. probably we will meet many strange club in this competition. lol.. those clubs names quite funny indeed: Metalist Kharkiv (their name remains me with the name like some magician or something ^^ ), Mlada Boleslav (i always think about prime minister whenever i hear this name ^^ ), Litex Lovech (sounds like toy company or something made from plastic :D ), Midtjylland (alot remains me with Disneyland :D ). but never underestimate them. who knows that our 1st squad with Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf, Pato, Pippo, Nesta (or even Flamini the new comer include them) will lose against the team from Disneyland like Midtjylland :tong: never say never.. the ball is round :guw:

Milan IS a big club, but to win serie A and UEFA you need more than just being a big club, you need a big quality squad. That's why Kaka said that to compete for scudetto, we need at least 17 good players. That means quality starters (which I believe we have) and subtitutions (which we clearly don't possess now).

For example look at Arsenal this season. They did well until the second half of the season before their brilliant performance rapidly declined. Some suggested it was due to immaturity. But Sir Alex Fegusson theorized that the injury of some key players cost them the EPL and UCL.

On the other side look at what SAF has done this year. He has Rooney, Giggs, Ronaldo, and Park on his disposal. If it were Milan, I'm sure that the board wouldn't bother to do some mercato. But SAF chose to buy Nani, Tevez and Anderson, and his decision paid off. Towards the end of the season while other teams began to lose their key players due to injuries or fatigues, MU maintained their pace both in EPL and UCL.

Galliani said after the win against Inter that Milan can beat any team if they have their complete squad. That's true. But we can't expect Kaka or Pirlo to be as creative as they can be after playing for 40 matches can we?
