Its almost official..im not sure about senderos' quality but i know he's 23 so we'll have to wait..he's on loan for 1 year with a buy out option..i think that this is the safiest way to buy a player you're not sure of his quality..

Although he made some bad perfoemances at the end of the season,i think he has some potential, especially learing from nesta and paolo..

d you think it is the right choise?
is he the man we were looking for?

I can't believe for a second he's the quality CB Ancelotti wanted when he was talking about bringing in someone who was better than what we had already. However, after spending money (or so it seems) on Shevchenko, all we were left with were loan deals, so in that respect he's ok.

His physical attributes are fantastic and what we need, but he is prone to losing his head like Kaladze. I also don't buy this theory that because he can train with Nesta & Maldini, this will suddenly smooth out all his faults and make him a much better player. I mean, has this happened with Kaladze? No. The Georgian still makes bad mistakes even though he's been with us/those players for many years.

The heart has ruled the head in the Shevchenko transfer and the knock on effect is that we've had to settle for possibly second best in the CB department. However, i remain hopeful that Senderos can prove his worth and become the defender his attributes & potential suggest he can be.

25-08-2008, 10:46
I think his physical presence in our back line in exactly what we needed after Stam left. He's only 23 and time is surely on his side.
I disagree with Jimbo;) that maldini and nesta will not help him to become a better defender. Jim, kaladze is a very good defender, maybe he wouldn't be one if he played in, let's say, inter without such great defenders on his side.

In his point in career he can only get better and maldini, nesta, kaladze and costacurta are the right people to help him, unlike EPL and wenger who was always attack-oriented coach.

For me, this is a great end of a great mercato.

Forza Milan

Cmon now Kui!!:D

He is an Arsenal player, or was up until today :D...plays (starts) for the Swiss national team.

He is young, only 23, but has tons of potential, but tends to make costly mistakes, and hence dropped down in the pecking order at Arsenal, worsened by the London club´s purchase of Silvestre from Man U (poor business from Arsenal/Wenger, but that is another story).

Dont know if he is the "quality" player that we need, but certainly is a bit better than Simic, if only in his youth. The loan option was the smart, and maybe only way to go for us, what with $heva´s aquisition.

Personally, I would have preferred a "Zapata" type purchase...ie young, with experience in the Serie A..but such is life...could have been worse, but could have been a lot better IMO.

Hes only 23 and for a defender thats young. He hasnt reached his peak and has potential. Physically hes great, hes got decent pace, strong, and commanding in the air.

But he is no leader in defence although he does make a good foil much better then bonera and khaladze.

We already have so many average defenders! Even it's loan, what we need a great CD not an average CD who is just like our Kala or Bonera (mistakes-prone).

Just like Sacchi said, really strange transfers made by Milan! :u31:

Is galliani in some kind of sick twisted twilight zone or is he just a damn inter fan!!

This frankenstein lookalike isnt good enough to sit on our bench. The only possible reason I can see Milan signing him is to make the average Kaladze and Bonera look like Gods!!

WTF????????????????? They said they were going to sign a first-choice CB, if not - they wouldn't sign any one at all. Senderos is in no way better than Kaladze. I'll keep hoping that this is not true, channel4 and goal.com say its official - acmilan.com and the biggest rumour mill calciomercato still haven't commented on the issue. Usually if a player joins a club the first to comment on whether its official or not is the club's official site. I'll pray that this is all a rumour.

Good choise(i will wait until is official) he is very young with experience at the best and most difficult league of the world, that makes him not only a good DC but also a known DC who can play in top leagues. He is young with future and can be a great DC.
The best is that we didn't sign an old or an uknown DC.Good choice. We get him on loan but at the end of the year we have an option to sign him 100%.

Are we writing this guy off already without even have the opporutnity to seeing him play once? I'm not ready to do it yet, but he is probably not the first rate defender we are looking for. That, we may have to wait until next season (when we are back into the CL).

Well actually I'm sure a lot of us HAVE seen him play quite often. I watch the EPL and have seen Senderos play for both Arsenal and Switzerland for at least 2-3 years and let's be honest he hasn't been a star CB.

But I'll agree with you that we should not be writing him off without seeing him perform in a Milan shirt. I made the same argument for our dear friend Andriy yesterday, so I would be a hypocrite to say otherwise.

Based on what I've seen of Sanderos...he is comparable to Kaladze which honestly should be a good addition to the squad. Plus he's younger so you never know he may surprise ppl with a run of consistent performances. The biggest thing he has going for him is nothing technical though....it's that Wenger hand-picked him several years ago and that usually is a good sign.

Anyway....welcome Philippe....wish you do well in a Milan shirt....hopefully it's another Philippe (Mexes) this time next year :)

hi MM fellow, even though i'm not a regular poster here, i'm actually a loyal reader of MM:v408:

about this news, not sure if it is really official, but if it is, i still think it's a good move. remember, senderos had actually played good football before especially in 2006 when Arsenal reached UCL for the 1st time. senderos mistake prone for the last 2 seasons may be due to other factors such as the team inconsistency (Arsenal players is too young to play consistent football, lack of team's experience, and no definite back four which i think always change (is it?)). beside, senderos is still young, only 23. he maybe slow but he can improve himself on positioning which maldini and nesta do best.

i had posted my opinion in goal.com also.

anyway, i wish him best of luck if he really is in milan next season.

Senderos was a talent only a couple of years back....and with players like Maldini,Nesta Ronaldinho, Kaka', Sheva......and Flamini (prev team-mates) he can do good......and maybe reach his potential. For me it's not about giving chance to Sanderos or not, but what boards think of our defence. Sanderos is no way better than our DC like Kaladze or Bonera (till-now-played performances). I thought, we were looking a WC DC or at least a better DC than we have right now (better than Kala for example, like more consistent even the new DC is not a WC defender). But we get 'only' a young and pretty-mistake-prone DC, just like Kala and Bonera.

So, the point is how our plan was : looking quality or quantitiy for the defence?

sendores is 23 and shown flashes of brilliance. and playedfor a big club in a big league. sure zapata has shown hes talented but at udinese. Bonera and kaladze may be better than senderos now (although i disagree) but in 5 years time when hes bonera's age.. he'l be better i think.

again i harp to fact we took loan w/ fix buy option. Minimal risk.

only young defenders who show world class ability r cheillini and pepe. granted id say santacroce, kompany, micah richards, breno all show as much if not more potential than senderos..... we shall see....i think he'll be useful, mark my words he'll surprise more than sissoko did at juve. italian style suits him more. onto kompany. 6mil!? now theres a potential steal

Yes, mate. I agree, he will be useful. For future (or in two or three years time) he is good option. My point is only, why we bought useful player? We really need a player to accompany Nesta.

Just let say we dont know who is better among Kala, Bonera or Sanderos. So, it means they will struggle for a single place to play with Nesta in heart of defence. This means, we got a DC which is clearly not better than Kala or Bonera.

My point is : Milan need better CD (either WC defender or consistent-performance CD).

In addition, we know Carlo. He won't use younger player if there is older player if their qualities are pretty similar (whhic is so logic for me). So, what our boards think actually?

Forget about Kompany, i saw him two years in the Bundesliga - and he was disappointing me. Of course, he was a solid player, but was injured very often and remained in his development. Hamburg did well to sell him to Manchester City.

Well, is Sanderous really an upgrade from Simic?

And at the end Sanderous will cost us 8M, which is about 4 more mil than Zapata at current market value.

I really think this Sanderous deal is for depth and Zapata will be coming next year.

Well I followed him for mor than 2 years and I don't think we should forget him at all. I agree his display at Hamburg was not what everybody had hoped for yet he didn't play bad. I allready said that he had a huge set back due to a series of injury's, when he got back on his feet his mother died suddenly in her early 50 and he didn't got along with Stevens either. As I recall it even VDV interfered and chose Kompany's side.
In the meanwhile after 1 single training with Manchester City Kompany was chosen man of the match in his first game. I hope he keeps up the good work.

Its a loan-- so its good business on milan's part. Would have liked to see Zapata or Filepe(both Udinese)....Vincent Kompany or Micha Richards....but we r short of cash it seems.

But what worries me the most is that I read smomewhere we paid 4 mil to loan senderos and if we want to make it permanent it would cost us another 10mil euros on top. Kompany was sold for a sum between 8-10 milion. So I don't think senderos is a good transfer money wise. Unless of course he proves me wrong on the field, and I hope he does.
So we can look back and laugh with the sum we paid for him...
But it's not milan couldn't afford to buy kompany since he cost only double of what we are paying to loan a player...

People the deal is like this: We loan a player that HAS quality ( is not Terry or Gallas ), but has qualiyt and has played in high tempo league for 5 years and trained with Wenger - for one year and Milan pays 2 mln! IF Milan likes the player he can be bought for 8mln, if not, we send him back. The deal is fair and Milan did a great job in there I have to damit. BRAVO TO GALLIANI!!

Chelsea didnt wanto to add an buying option for Ivanovic and NO toher CB's were available for such small ammount of money. Zapata is around 15mln, Corluka was about to be sold to Tottenham for 10-12, Thiago only in January and so on... In circumstances, this is a good solution. We still need to hope that Nesta ( hey, the best CB in the world!!! ) will be back is some reasonable time! Get well Sandro!

Some of my friends say Senderon is a disaster and he has nothing to do in MILAN ( they are not Milanisti and still think that way ), some say he can sometimes fing good form and paly extremly effective and sharp and precise... I have seen him play like 20-30 times: he looked shaky to me, but also had some great games. Maybe he'll find more confidence with NEsta-Zambro around him...

Forza Senderos!

P.S.

Maybe now some Swiss bank can be our sponsor for january mercato :)

Well, the thing is that both Laursen and Coloccini were rejects from Milan but if these two actually stays with Milan, we would not have CB problems.

THen again, maybe if they stayed, they would not reach their levels today(which is a level not at Nesta stage yet, but IMO higher than Bonera and Kaladaze.)

Jeff
27-08-2008, 02:54
I don't know; if sheva can fail so badly (and Oliveria in Italy) but did so well in Italy (and Spain), I do'nt know if the assumption is immediately right that if these two actually stays with Milan, we would not have CB problems. It's equally plausible to say that we might have even MORE CB problems...

i totally agree. i was very surpraised when i know that Phil will join us this season. what a deal ! hats of for Galliani and co. i dont know what make Arsenal loaned their best defender last season when they dont have any quality CB to cover up Gallas or Toure. i even like Phil more than Toure in Arsenal. others left to cover Gallas or Toure are Silvestre (i choose Phil millions time than him :tong: ) and Djourou i guess. the last name was often struggled with injured last season in Arsenal. i dont know that he still has chance to play. before Phil's departure i read that Djorou might be leaving on loan this season. but.. o well.. who cares.. we got Senderos :D

SENDEROS: OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION A.C. MILAN

8/27/2008

A.C. Milan officially communicate that an agreement has been reached with Arsenal for the temporary acquisition of the sporting performances of the player Philippe Senderos.

A DREAM COME TRUE

8/27/2008 10:21:00 PM

Today's declarations from Philippe Senderos. For the strong defender joining Milan is a dream come true. Now there is, most of all, a lot of desire to work.

MILANELLO - With already a good knowledge of the Italian language, Philippe Senderos today gave his first few declarations as a new Milan player before the afternoon training:

"I am very happy to be able to play for a team like Milan, for me it's like a dream come true, everything went very quickly, in a week. Here everything is incredible, the people are very simple and I can say they have made me feel right at home."

Philippe Senderos then talked about all his personal successes but for him the dream isn't over:

"In the past I have achieved some satisfactions, like winning the European Championship with the Under 17 team and then of course at 18 my passage to a great team like Arsenal. in London I learned a lot, it was a life school and Wenger helped me, but today I can certainly say I have reached a superior level after joining this club. I want to give one hundred percent and improve myself every day. This team wants to return to the Champions League and I will do my best to help. When you will see me on the pitch? We'll see how my condition improves, I still have to undergo some tests and then after the first league match there will be two weeks to work, we'll see."

Goodbye Philippe - Where did it all go wrong?

August 26th, 2008

Philippe Senderos will today sign for AC Milan on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent move. Whilst I’ll be interested to see if Arsenal.com mention the possibility of a permanent move, it’s clear this isn’t a Havard Nordveit-style loan move for development’s sake - Philippe is being allowed to move on because Arsene considers him dispensible.

That in itself is somewhat of a watershed. Senderos is rare in that he’s one of the first of Wenger’s ‘projects’ to be abandoned. After years of investing time and money in the Swiss defender’s potential, he has now decided to let him go, seemingly preferring to rely on new signing Mikael Silvestre. For the first time in years, Arsene has chosen a veteran over a youngster. And that might not be such a bad thing. Firstly because it might suggest he recognises that his youth experiment has its limits, but secondly because Senderos could never have become the player we needed him to be at a club as lacking in experienced defensive experts as Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger is many things, but he is not a defensive coach. His interest is primarily in attacking or creative players. The great centre-backs he’s had (Adams, Keown, Campbell) have all been either bought or inherited. Kolo Toure is an astonishing athlete and outstanding footballer, but not a born defender. Senderos is. Like John Terry or Nemanja Vidic, it’s inconcievable that Senderos could play in any other position on the field. Wenger does not understand these creatures. They are foreign to him and to his way of thinking. And one has the impression that most of the coaching staff feel the same.

Defending is seen as a secondary art at Arsenal. Arsene was lucky to inherit the world’s best back four, and then to have a defensive phenomenon like Sol Campbell to carry him through the early part of the decade. But since Sol’s departure, the deficiencies in our coaching have become clear - we don’t have a cohesive defensive unit, and are clueless when it comes to set pieces.

For a time, it seemed like Senderos would be the solution to that problem. When Campbell was out injured in both 2005 and 2006, he came in and was outstanding, particularly in our record-breaking run to the Champions League final. Toure and Senderos was a defensive partnership that had a towering stopper and a quick recovering defender - it is the formula that made Adams/Keown and Campbell/Toure such successful pairings. What’s more, the proof was there - it worked, keeping out the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid.

But then Arsene bought William Gallas. And more than the arrival of Silvestre, more than the Champions League exit at Anfield, more than his travails against Didier Drogba, that is what did for Senderos’ Arsenal career. It tells you something about the esteem in which he was held at that point that many assumed Gallas had been bought to play at left-back and replace Ashley Cole.

Gallas is a good defender, and one can understand why Arsene wanted to bring in what he considered proven quality, but he’s hardly been an unequivocal success, has he? One can’t help but wonder what might have happened if Arsene had stuck with Senderos and Toure - not only might we have had a central defensive pairing that functioned, but we might have had a leader and organiser to boot. As it was, Senderos’ confidence was shattered by Wenger’s continually wavering faith, and he became the nervous wreck fans grew to doubt.

But I can’t help but feel that Senderos did not fail us. We failed him, by failing to have a structure in place that was able to his exploit his undoubted potential - just think back to his remarkable European debut at home to Bayern Munich. He is right to move. I now firmly believe he’ll go on to have a good career, starting with an immediate improvement in the slower-paced, defensively astute Italian league. We at Arsenal won’t benefit from that - if he does well, he’ll be staying there permanently, and if he doesn’t then we’ll get back a faltering player who knows the manager no longer values him. Senderos’ Arsenal career is over, whatever the nature of today’s transfer.

The loan apparently brings with it a £1.5m fee. More money into the ‘Save Our Midfield’ fund. Less than a week now, Arsene. We’re waiting.

Galliani responded today to English critics of serie a: " Milan is the most titled club in Europe and in the world. Italians have won more then English." I thing that was quite adequate for even "Rooney is the best striker in the world" fans to understand.

Best back 4 I have seen: Cafu-Nesta-Stam-Maldini playing against united at San Siro (1:0). Sacchi Milan is even level above that with Tassoti and Franco.

Im happy with this signing as well. Young, tall, strong. I had a feeling about borriello being good before we sent him and brought him back, and i feel the same for this guy.

Even if he makes a mistake or 2 in the begining i really believe he should be considered a starter.

I only thought (when I posted it) that the view is pretty objective about Sanderos. ONLY that, NOTHING more.

I think sometime your hate for England/English people in particular is too deep, like Siregar clearly mentioned the above was taken from Gunnerblog - which is a well known blog for all Arsenal fans and it would be typical of a fan to say that.

That's the thing Italians HAVE won more than England but how much has the supreior Croatian team got over England?

Hitman dont really want to make this in to a racial issue but that Croatian understands what I said.

If you need explaining more clearly then make a topic in a more suitable forum and I will be happy to 'elaborate' or you need help reading between the lines?

I had to edit some of the above posts, to be honest I think the reasons are very obvious.

Ghost and everybody please do not bring non-footballing or insults into discussions.

I agree with rezag; any discussion on religion and politics may potentially result in immediate ban.

Ladies & Gentlemen - I am inviting you to fill out this less-than-5-minute survey (http://umich.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_6okqks73wReTK7i&SVID=Prod) for me. This is just a pilot study (i.e., not used for any commercial or publication purpose) that I am doing for my class.

If you are a student (and never have any work experiences), please do not fill this out! If you are a student but have some kinds of work experiences, please help! I truly appreciate your response.

Cheers,
J
