For me, I think this is the most team that is suited for Milan however we must remember than Milan's style has changed since Carlo left so it will be a different game.

I cant wait for this one!

I'm also pissed that Arsenal have got Porto, they never get tough draws, EVER.

Fiorentina x Bayern, I really hope Viola can beat them, we need them to..if Bayern beat Viola then that could be very bad for Italy at the end of the season.

Chelsea x Inter, damn that means another Italian team out. But I do like the idea of Ancelotti returning to play against his nemesis Inter and Mourinho back to Chelsea.

If we lose severely in this one, and our frailties are exposed, than I would like to see how Galliani gets Milan MGT out of this one....

But considering the injuries Man Unt. have, it should be an interesting affair!

man u lost 3-0 to fulham and milan lost 2-0 to palermo.....unfortunately many people are saying milan are going to easily beat manchester.....problem is, milan hasn't won at the san siro for the past 4 CL games (including arsenal 2 years ago)..and has been quite disappointing in the 2 games against zurich and marseille and they needed to win both.... an important fact is that we play at Old Trafford in the return leg, that's going to be a huge factor... i just hope we don't underestimate them and play to win... in the past decade, milan has lost most (like 90%) of the CL knock-out games where they play the 2nd leg away... I hope Milan become the underdogs come February, thats the only way our players will play their hearts out.

We are underdogs in February, everybody knows that, the thing is we have to remain positive, why are people suprised that the fans are optimistic of beating Manchester in CL?

They fear us,thats for one, they have negative eposides with us.And we have the right to be optimistic,we arent Sevilla or Bordeaux,we are MILAN and we can beat them.

If our first team stays fit and in decent shape, then i dont see why we couldnt knock out Manchester,we have talented players,Pato,Seedorf,Pirlo and especially Ronaldinho can decide a match in one moment of brilliance.

We are built for CL,we have proved that in 2007 and we can prove that now.

So we havent won in a long time at San Siro, big deal?We can draw 0-0 at home and draw 1-1 away and we are still through to the next round....!

Manchester has a better squad then us overall for sure, but thats the good thing,to win CL you dont need depth, you need eleven good players, and we have eleven good players.Manchester will be favourite, but we are good enough to match them. Also,i doubt they will be full strenght against us,they will miss players for sure, they are never injury free...

Only hope both teams can stay healthy and if thats the case, those two games will be great games

One thing for sure, it will be an interesting game over both legs.

Either side is more than capable of beating the other....and with both teams committed to attacking football (although Sir Alex might set up Man U to play on the counter) it should be end to end stuff.

Can't see Leo winning the tactical battle though, so I think we are out after these two games...which for me is huge, considering that I didn't see us getting out of the group.

Forza Miiiiilan, regardless.

Nowadays, when I see you so pessimistic about our chances, that makes me hope we will pass this turn ... the very otptimistic Warro from the last year became so pessimistic !! At the start of the season, you almost thought we would be in the bottom of the table if I'm not wrong, and we're almost at the top (so the contrary happened).

Now you say we will be eliminated by Manchester, let's hope that the contrary happens again !! :D

What can I say Geo Tav? I definitely want us to win, just think that all things being equal, ie both teams have their players fit and able, they have a deeper squad, and a more experienced manager, who knows how to adjust tactics + personnel to achieve victory...these are their advantages, that over 2 legs, I just don't see us being able to overcome...

That said, I do hope we win....just wouldn't bet on it...

Hey Warro I can't believe that you still have doubts of ACM beating Man Utd :wth: Our midfield will eat the skinny Giggs, Kido Fletcher and the Ginger head Scholes and its not even worth mentioning the useless Carrick (18 mil pounds ). Apart from the Humpty Dumpty Rooney and Vidic, I can't see a single world class player in that line up. And we all know that Wayne Rooney is a loser when it comes to the bigger stage and Vidic is not the same of 2006-2008. The way I see it, we will blow them away at the San Siro and the again beat them at Old Trafford. Its a very simple and straight forward match :u125:

I am thinking of starting a poll on the next most wanted opponents of ACM in the QFs. Don't forget, aside from Messi, I mean Barca, no team is better than ACM, whether you like it or not.

I concur. And though our game has changed, it is so fitting for Royalty to play against each other. Either way this match goes (hopefully ours) it is always an obligated honour for both teams to get the chance to challenge each other.

I'm also pissed that Arsenal have got Porto, they never get tough draws, EVER.

Well... the Gunners are squires. Though they did slay our noble heiny a few years ago. Porto are noble but they might get dismounted by the squires.

Fiorentina x Bayern, I really hope Viola can beat them, we need them to..if Bayern beat Viola then that could be very bad for Italy at the end of the season.

I noticed the pundits in the west have seemed to 'dis Italian Calcio of late. You and I know better and have always known what Calcio is all about.

I would be pleased if Carlo wins one with Chelsea if we dont.
Anyway hitman... I enjoyed this post and your thoughts about this Regal match.

I.M.O, it would be much better to play the likes of Antonini or Abate on Valencia.... Having Janko or Zambrotta, even worse, Oddo on this speedy winger could mean serious trouble. I know Abate is far from perfect, but he can tag his man, and has the pace to match.....

If both teams are 100% healthy and both managers can field their respective best 11. IT will come down Fergie and Leo's in game decisions. Quite frankly, I do agree with Warro, as the in game decision of Leo is really crap and how he prepares his team for battle is also crap. Just look at all the return leg in the CL. Despite their notable weakness-all attack and no defensive players, Milan did not win in the return leg. Marseille could have beat Milan in Milan if it was not for some poor finishing. Same goes for Zurich.
Thats something that Leo must improve on when it comes to playing in the CL. As you must work on tactics to shut the other team down while playing to your own strength.
Something that Milan is not capable of at the moment.

he did...but Dida was to thank for those goals more than Rooney should be credited! but mzk makes a very valid point, Rooney is not a world class striker, not yet at least, he is extremely over-rated.

the advantage we have over manchester, is that they lack players of the ultra world-class calibre, players that can potentially win the Golden Ball.. they don't have any player that can turn a game around single handedly... Milan has quite a few: Nesta, Pirlo, Seedorf, R80, Inzaghi. I wish to add Pato but I don't think he's at that level just yet. I still think he wastes too many chances 'cause of poor decisions.

the biggest worry for Milan is having to play at OT the second leg. that's going to be the only reason this is not going to be an easy game for Milan. I've watched Man U play 2 games in the last week and they won both games with a big margin, however I don't think they are a great team..they have way too many flaws (granted that they have alot of players injured).

2 games is not good enough... in the San Siro game against Real, he scored a wonderful goal however in the rest of the match he wasted so many chances he shouldnt have. (not necessarily infront of the goal, but promising build up play). Against Roma he had a good goal and an average performance, he was by no means "great". I agree with you that he was great at the Bernabeu but in other games where it mattered (Inter, Zurich, Marseille) he was just another player on the pitch...actually worse, he always disappointed.

The guys 20 and he's already scored against Inter, Roma, Juve, Real Madrid, basicly every big club he's ever played against, alot of the biggest players in the world can't say that. I think it's fair to say that he's a big game player.

I think its the opposite. Pato runs the show in important matches. But having said that, he should be sold to Chelsea rite now for 50 mil and the money should be used to bring in Dzeko and G.Rossi, because they seem to be ACM fans, and I have had enough of watching our star players leaving San Siro at their peak.

I just saw Manchester-Leeds today and suprise suprise Leeds won 0-1 at United!

It confirms everybody's thoughts that United are a whole different team without Ronaldo, everybody can beat them now.If you watch them it really confirms the things we said about them. They just miss somebody who really can make a difference, somebody who can win a game with one individual move,Ronaldo was that person and now they expect Rooney to do this, but he cant.

I am really confident if we play them, ofcourse i dont underestimate them, they are still 1 of the best in the world and much stronger then us.But we really have a chance against them, they dont have much dangerous players.

Meh, don't think Man Utd are all that bad despite that lose. They're still second in the league and won their group in the Champions League.

Still I love when they lose since I loath them. It's a pretty embaressing lose aswell, especially since Man Utd and Leeds apparently hate eachother.

Just want to say that beside having Rooney and Berba, ManU played with their B-squad. And ManU did not win the group with those players.

Anyhow, if everyone is healthy, ManU will be tough. But they do lack firepower upfront, something that Milan must take advantage of.

It's pretty much true. Rooney's been incredible for them this season and has pretty much carried the side. What will be important is to make sure there isn't a lot of space between the defence and midfield, as he will exploit it if there is.

The game is on Tuesday Feb 16th, only 11 days! Let the countdown begin.... (Bayern x Fiorentina Wed 17th, Inter x Chelsea Wed 24th)

as of today, I am not too confident of our chances.... I just hope we could keep a clean sheet...

The latest news is Nesta is ready to play this weekend against Bologna and that Pato is still doubtful. Mancini is cup-tied. If Nesta is back, you can bet your life that Rooney will be just another Gilardino (the Milan Gilardino that is).

If Pato doesn't make it, would we still play a 4-3-3 with Becks as a RW? I personally think the most important player in this game is Seedorf. I just hope he starts to improve cause he was awful in the last 2 games against Inter and Livorno. Ronaldinho also needs to be more decisive in big games like he was at Barca. Don't get me wrong, he is playing absolutely amazing, but I'm afraid when it counts, he (and the entire team in fact) completely fade to black.

Forza Milan, Can't wait!

I am not so sure this Milan can claim the DNA thing anymore. Once upon a time (pre-Leo) we would play crap in the league but atleast give big teams in europe and even the big ones in italy a run for their money, sometimes beatings. Now its the opposite. We got some hardcore whip-ass from Inter, and against Juve we only won cause they were much much worse. Albeit, we did decently versus Real in CL.
I honestly don't know what to expect.
But it sure would be funny to see Beckham score the only goal of the two legs on the last minute at the Old Trafford.

If ManU are in the form they were against Arsenal the midfield has to be reworked or we are risking Inter type of result, not just the score but the counterattacking problem.

we will need two defensive midfielders against ManUre, I wathced their game against arsenal and they pack numbers on the contertattack.

The goal by Park was very interesting, from his own half he made a short pass to Rooney, rooney held the ball for a short while(going in the opposite direction) while Park continued his run unmaked into the opposition half, then rooney chipped the ball for Park to run onto and he was clear on to goal.

The other goal, the made use of the wings to counterattack, I think it was Nani who received the ball on the right wing while Rooney made a late run unmarked down the center into the box and Nani teed him up for a clear shot on goal.

Rooney is their main threat, he doesn't play like a typical forward, he goes deep brings others into play, makes late runs down the centre into the oppositions box. He has improved a lot over the years, I think Capello played a part in that.

They put a lot of numbers on the counter attack but its more a decoy for the late arriver who finishes the job.

I am not sure how useful Pato will be, having been out with injury for so long.

Indeed. It might take him a while to get back in gear.

Don't know if it's a good example, but look at Seedorf. Since he's been back he hasn't performed up to his standards so far this season. Then again the whole team has been shaky. Guess the same will apply to Pato.

This team is good enough to beat any team on any given day, even Barca and Bayern. Having said that many of you are talking about Pato being the deciding factor, well I totally agree, but one thing that will be even bigger difference maker in this tie will be our FULLBACKS. I don't trust in Abate and Antonni playing together. Zambrotta must play, to control the wide players of Man Utd, similarly if Bonera is fit, he must play as well, specially in the second leg. Also, if Pato is missing then instead of being coward & playing with Beckham & 2 DM, Leo should play Borriello on right hand side & Huntelaar in the middle. No need to be afraid of playing with an attacking mentality. Seriously guys, why can't Borrie & Hunter play together? I bet they can form a lethal partnership in Pato's absence.

Prediction Time:
ACM 2 - 0 Man Utd
Man Utd 1 - 0 ACM

8 days left

as of today, our morale is dooooooown and their morale is up... but hey, that's how Milan has always preferred it to be in the CL ;)

The biggest questions: Will our 4 injured starters make it back in time? Zambrotta/Oddo/Nesta/Pato. Shame that Mancini is cup-tied I thought he was pretty solid against Bologna and offers us something else on the flanks and his one-touch football can be useful for players like Boriello, Pato, Seedorf.

Warro Bantan
09-02-2010, 04:29
I truly think that without Nesta, we will lose, (even if Bonera put in an excellent shift vs Bologna...but thats Bologna it must be said), and even with him, looking at the form that Man U are in, it will be a tough task to advance past them.

They will have a Vidic back (and anxious to impress his potential new employers, if rumors are to be believed that he is on his way out, and to Milan at that) + Ferdinand will also return....Rooney is in sparkling form....:sigh:

The only positive I see is that they will be attacking us, thus the game will be open, as long as we can get a couple of goals, we have a chance....yet we have failed to score more than 2 goals in our last 4 matches....:moan:

Who knows? The ball is round as they say...FORZA MIIILAN!! (regardless)

Considering that Leo will play with one striker, Borreillo, and that if Vidic and Rio are starting for ManU, how can that be good news for Milan? To me Vidic and Rio are tougher than Lucio and Samuel.

To me, the scary thing about playing ManU now is not Rooney in great form or Vidic and Rio coming back, it has more to do with guys like Fletcher, Park and Carrick picking up their forms. As these three are their engine in midfield, who might not be as tough as Gattuso but do runs a lot on the field, win balls and make the no nonsense passes. They might not be the Essien or Pirlo or Cesc in midfield but as a unit those three are really tough to play against as they all compliment each other games really well. Once they start pressing and pressing and pressing, guys like Seedorf or Pirlo won't stand a chance against them.

You know what, I believe that this ACM is good enough to beat Man Utd on any given day regardless of Rooney's form & Vidic etc coming back & the star of the show will be Pirlo & Seedorf. Mark my words :devs:

Pretty sure Seedorf will start. This is his kind of game and Leo knows it. While him holding the ball for ages might not be very good against the smaller sides, against Manchester I think it'll be an asset. My guess is that he'll start.

Don't know why people keep saying Seedorf is a big game player. Beside the first Real game, he has been below par in all of those so call big games this season.

Vidic has looked shakey since Torres ripped him apart at old trafford, i just hope Borri stops wasting our time and chances and starts scoring them again and Dinho can play like he did against Siena.

This is a classic post on MM ( that I love evendough people are not objective ). TORRES ripped Vidic, Borriello is 5 times less of a player then Torres. What are we gonna do, cross vs Ferdinand and Vidic? That would be hillarious...

Dinho played well vs 10 man Siena and later on went to walk for 4 games. Its great way of lifting the spitir of people that play and run for you!!

I reall, really hope Pato will play as we can once again just cross the ball 150 times into the box! Pato can play vertically and Dinho will have balanced marking coz of the space PAto can create on the other side. Also Evra will have to play differently for 90min.

Pato + Nest is our only hope that we can play for 180 min on pair with United. And if I see Dinho and Seedorf walking again, vs United, I think I'll have a stroke or something.

I agree with what you say. But I think that maybe your expectations of Pato are too high. Certainly he will make us much better than we have been recently. His speed/acceleration, vertical movement etc will not only give Man Utd problems when he has the ball but also when he is off the ball, he creates space for his teammates.

But I am not so sure that he is a matchwinner, at least not against the big teams. Against a small side he can provide the magic, but against United I dont think he has what it takes. While he does have the potential to be just this kind of player, I think that he has a long long way to go, and that he lacks the experience and maturity as of now.

Nesta on the other hand, well, he is godlike. Not only is he a monster in defense, but this season he has even proven that he can score vital goals on corners. It is truly great that he will make it.

He is the best U21 player in the world. Scored 2 vs Real away and made fun out of them. Then scored a "winnner" at S.S. but was called for non existing foul. Pato can play vs anyone.

also agree
i can understand that the way we are playing now, the 4-3-3, we probably don't have anyone better than him on the right wing. If Mancini can cut it there, then I would definitely prefer to see him as a striker. However, given Dinho's form of late, i would favor a more traditional approach with 2 striker: Hunter-Pato up front...and that is what i am hoping Leo will try in the Udinese match on Friday (albeit Pato won't probably start)

Filipéz 182

We talk about Borriello, who will just with Rio and Vidic, and Dinho etc. We should be talking about possibilities of Seedorf to maybe finnally plays good 90min, maybe Bonera as a RB and someone on the left ( Antonini if Zambro is not fit).

mrki, I think Vidic may miss the Milan game and I think Antonini isn't as bad as Abate, I wouldn't mind playing Luca for this one, I just don't want Abate to start, he is one of the dumbest players in Europe.

My formation:

-------------------------------- ABBIATI ---------------------------------

ODDO ------------- NESTA ------------------ SILVA --------- ANTONINI

-------------------- BECKHAM ------------ AMBROSINI -----------------

---------------------------------- PIRLO -----------------------------------

PATO ------------------------- SUPERPIPPO --------------- RONALDINHO

I know Seedorf is king in the big games, but I don't know, I just don't feel him anymore after he returned from his last injury. If Seedorf is fit and fine, then he should start ahead of Beckham. I dont want Zambro to play because he hasn't played in so long and he needs time to regain fitness. No Gattuso please! I also think Boriello should be ahead of Huntelaar in preference for strikers, regardless of KJH's 2 goals. However, I think Pippo is more important than those two players for this one.

Here some things about the way Manchester plays...

The main formation Ferguson uses this year is 4-4-2, with two all around midfielders (Carrick and Fletcher), two wide players (Nani, Valencia; Giggs sometimes) and two strikers (Rooney and Berbatov).

But, for all tougher games, especially away from home, Ferguson switches to his alternative formation, 4-3-3, and that will most probably be their formation against us.

Regarding the starting 11, Ferguson recently used these players:

Van Der Sar

Rafael
Brown, Ferdinand
Evans
Evra

Fletcher
Scholes
Carrick

Nani, Valencia
Rooney
Giggs, Park

The midfield three are starters for sure, Scholes is more in front of the other two, he presses the opposing team's play-maker all the time, which is Ferguson's great weapon, but bad for us.

In Attack, Giggs seems to be injured, Nani is in great form and will start ahead of Valencia, and Park will start for Giggs on the left side.

Defense is a big question. Evra is safe only. Ferdinand is back from the injury and Ferguson will start him most possibly, because he can't rely on Brown-Evans pair. Vidic didn't start in the last 6-7 games, though he's ready. Evans is a safer bet, and that's great for us. Right back is the biggest question. Rafael starts most games, Neville plays sometimes, but I think that Fergie could play Brown here because Ferdinand is back and Rafael is liability because Ronaldinho is on that side. Neville can start too, because he's capable in defense, but that's less probable.

It should be noted that Fergie's 4-3-3 is different from our in a way that wide attackers help side backs a MUCH, unlike ours, the only player that stays up is Rooney, all others are behind the ball.

To conclude here's there probable formation:

4-3-3: Van Der Sar - Brown (Rafael), Ferdinand, Evans (Vidic), Evra - Fletcher, Carrick - Scholes - Nani, Rooney, Park.

Well I did few days ago, since I am the best at what I do, i.e predictions :mex:

I hope that Silva will be fit for Tuesday's game because I don't think Nesta could handle the back all by himself. I agree with hitmann that Abate is a defensive liability but he's all we have at the moment so we need to make sure he isn't isolated in defense because I don't want us conceding any away goals. I also hope Antonini is back especially after watching the disaster of a game Favalli had yesterday.

We have only one spot for consideration in midfieild really because Ambro and Pirlo are sure starters (and rightly so). I would have played Flamini with them because he can both defend AND attack, which is something we would need on the counterattack but I'm not sure what his current fitness is like. In the end we'll probably end up playing Rino so I hope he's up for it and gives it his all.

In attack I'd play Dinho, Huntelaar and Pato because we need that little extra quality and movement up front. With Dinho on one side, and Pato on the other, there should be plenty space for Huntelaar to exploit as we stretch their defense. Beckham, if he has to play, should play in midfield because as an RW, he's lacking the 1 on 1 quality that will be necessary on Tuesday. Pato needs to take better care when the ball is in his possession because against Udinese, I think any time he wasn't fouled, he just randomly gave the ball away and we can't afford that against Man-U. This was true of the team on the whole and we really need to be at 100% concentration for this game.

FORZA MILAN PER SEMPRE!! I can't wait for this match.

Like I said earlier, the midfield of ManU will be tricky to play against as they are all very mobile, can run for the whole match and compliment each other very well. Individually they might not have the class of Pirlo, Beck and Company, but collectively they are a better unit.

Dinho will again be double team in this match. Pato will be the difference maker but I am concern about him, as he sometime tends to do too much.

Thiago will be fit for Manchester. But, what do you think about Bonera on the right? Bonera-Thiago-Nesta-Antonini?
I mean, Bonera is in form, he is intelligent defender, and he played in Parma right back. The offside trap would work better with these 4 behind. So, what is your opinion on this defense line?
For middfield Becks-Pirlo-Ambro. Becks will play with 200% of power against his former club.
Boriello seems injury, and he could start from the bank. The first option is Klaas, and what I saw against Udinese is: speed. He would help more against Manchester, because he can run with Pato, and create conffusion in the defence.
Abbiati is a must for MAnchester and for the whole season.

I wouldn't play Bonera at RB, and I think Leonardo won't too. Attacking full-backs are important for our system, especially on the right side, because when Pato gets in the middle we need RB to push up to keep width.
Becks in place of Seedorf is a big no, 2 weak midfielders out of 3, their midfield plays strong pressure, so we need Seedorf because he's strong and he can keep that ball under the pressure.

I agree, though, for Abbiati, he's a MUST.

Somehow my hate for Man Utd has not died even though CR9 left for Real.

I think Fergie will play Rooney as the lone striker and try to crowd the midfield. I don't see any of the teams sharing a lion's share of possessin. I don't like to say this but I hope Leo plays Flamini ahead of Ringhio.

Evra will have a tough time trying to contain Pato. He gotta mark Pato like the left-back in every Serie A team does. Fergie will also play Park and this guy runs all the time and could be found everywhere and that is just annoying. If they play Rafael as RB, it would be interesting to see his discipline against R80.

And lastly I think Ambrosini has been playing like a true Capatino this season.

Fergie say's its a great time to play Milan since Kaka left that our system has fallen apart lately and we rely on Pato too much and Pirlo , Rino , Seedorf are past their best. Okay Fergie , NOW Man Utd have lost Ronaldo , are playing well but not unbelievable football they attack down the wings alot have strong compact midfield but do not pass the ball very well , Ferdinand is a shadow of himself and Van Der Sar is very very slow to get down to shots from 20 yards , Rooney is playing great but is still a hot head that can be wound up and put off his game . And as for Milan needing Pato desperately well Alex Ferguson Man Utd need Rooney alot more because Hunter , Seedorf Dinho can all score goals aswell Utd have no one that scores regularly besides Rooney.

I don't believe in Abate too, in fact I don't believe in any of our full backs, except Zaborotta and Oddo. But, believe me, our left side is a bigger problem. You're not right for Rooney, he plays in the middle, Park is not the left. Park is not a player who's dangerous in attack, he runs much, he covers much, but he can't run at players and, most important, he can't exploit any positional mistakes by Abate. On the other hand, Nani is on the right and he's their most in from player beside Rooney. Antonini will have a hard time stopping him. In ideal situation I would play Zambrotta on the left and Oddo on the right, but I think we can play without Oddo, but Zambrotta's absence on the left side would be a huge blow.

about Ferguson, he can talk all he likes, but what he is saying means absolutely nothing...he said:
we lost Kaka?? well they lost CR9
we are Pato-dependent?? i'd say they are far more Rooney-dependent than we are on Pato.

so although what he is saying is pretty true, i still see it as mind games because he's considering that this is the "best time" to play us....implying that we are in a poor state....well i say let him do all the talking and let us do all the scoring

Regarding the formation, i think Bonera on the right is an intersting proposition which i think we better use in the return leg away while tomorrow we should stick with Abate because Pato will keep Evra busy so we need someone on that side who can benefit from the space created by Pato and based on this i would also love to see Flamini play in midfield as he can provide excellent cover for Abate and support the attack in so much better quality than Gattuso could ever do + Flamini is no stranger to playing ManU. Beckham can be used as a subsitute.

As for the left hand side, i sure hope Antonini will make it because it seems Zambrotta surely won't and i'd hate to see Favalli or Jankulovski defending againts Nani...that would be a massacre. However, whomever will play as LB, should be supported far better by Ambrosini than was the way against Udinese because that side looked like an open invitation for attack.

I'm confident our forward trio can cause all sorts of trouble for ManU like they did agaisnt Udinese especially that that was probably their first real match together...

Our main wish is to keep a clean sheet, so i am praying that Thiago will be back, and Dida's Mr. Hyde is out of Milano tomorrow :w221:

It seems that our biggest problem is the 3th midfield. Pirlo-Ambro and...
But why not try Becks? I mean, he is HOT on the match. And he still has the killer pass. So, we get the ball in our room, play it to Becks, and he can shoot a killer pass in front of Klaas or Pato run. Remembar Real? Pato is to fast for Mancho defence. So, this could lead us to drive Mancho defence to get a yellow for persistent fouling. Vidic is not there, that means Rio is the man, and he is not so fast. So after today news, I think that our best solution will be:
------Ambro-------
Becks-----Pirlo
So, in this case, you have an hard working capitano, and 2 players who needs just 3m of space to see the situation and make a long nice pass in the run of Klaas and Pato. Klaas will be a BIG + for us tomorow. He is faster then Marco, and that means that the Mancho defence must cope with 2 pacefull striker, and a dangerous genius on the left side.

edit: and Ronaldinho should be forbidden to drible so much. Ok a few times, but not allways the same tactic, give to Dinho, and let him drible. San Siro is not a Circus!

I would love to see Clarence on the field, but the genius Clarence, not the one who don't want to come bakc to defend, who don't want to run but walk the most of time. I would love to see the "old" Seedorf, because he could give us a big +. But, It is time and time gone, that I didn't saw this Seedorf. The last time it was against Real in Madrid, Because at San Siro against Real he was 0. Where was there the motivation?
For Becks, yes, I saw the passes too. That were killer passes for Udinese, and not for our striker. But, I don't know how it looks at Milanello now.
I can't edit nothing, so, I will just sit in the pub, take my beer, and watch Milan

Anyone else think Abbiati should get the nod ahead of Dida? I think he is back to full training. Dida makes me nervous especially after fumbling so many balls against Udinese. I really have this feeling that he'll pull a move like he did against Real and drop the ball on Rooney's feet. Hope not.

No to Beckham from me, I explained why, to be quick, out midfield becomes weak and will fail under pressure, and Manchester is a pressing team.

Bog NO to Ambro all alone behind 2 creators. Ambro doesn't has speed or lungs to cover so much space, even Gattuso lost his speed and stamina, so the only player who could cover so much space is Flamini, perhaps.

You say that their defense will not be able to catch Pato, just be aware that Pato is playing versus super-quick Evra.

And did I missed something about Huntelaar? It always seemed to me that he's slow, to compare not much faster than current Van Nistelrooy, how he became faster than Borriello, who's not a slow player by any means?

Midfield: flamini-Ambro-Pirlo?
Sounds good to me. But can he resist the pressure? My best would be Pirlo-Ambro and the "old" Seedorf, but Seedorf is not more old. It is time and time and time, that he didn't played a good game. We need runners, and not walking genius. Like I told in the earlyer post, I would love to see the Seedorf from Madrid, but in San Siro against Madrid, he was walking, not running. And we need 3 middfielder that run the whole time. Becks, I don't know. When I look at what he did against Udine, mamma mia. This is horrible. But, it seems that the starting 3 will be: Pirlo-Ambro-Seedorf, and in the second half Seedorf for Becks subtitute

Key players for me is our CB's , and the front 3. I think Pirlo or Seedorf will do there jobs. R80 better step up , and Pato should make runs when he has a nice opening but also look for the pass to H11.

If we also remember this other record: each time Milan and Madrid faced each other in CL, the winner won the CL ... we can say we are the winner of our both games against Real (3-2 in Real, 1-1 in Milan).

If you merge these two statistics: Milan is for sure the winner of the CL 2009-2010 !! :D

Rumours surfacing that Bonera may beat Abate to play as a RB. As much as I hate Abate playing as a RB, I think Bonera is worse... I wouldn't risk changing the lineup or the way we play.

I just am curious as who will be our third midfielder besides Ambro and Pirlo. Most sites report that Flamini will start, I just hope he manages to keep his cool. I was hoping to see Becks or Seedorf though because Man Utd will be very defensive today and I did not want to have 2 DMs. I think we should attack them while we can, even tho it is more important to keep a clean sheet.

I hope to see surprise changes before kick off: Seedorf & Inzaghi in the starting 11. These 2 guys are legends of the game and competition. Seedorf's got four CL's with 3 diff teams and Pippo is the highest scorer in UEFA's history. There's no way Huntelaar can offer what Pippo can offer in a game like tonights.

I agree with your choice and it will most probably be like that. I don't have a problem with Flamini starting either, but we need REAL Seedorf here, his form is crucial for our success in CL and he was a player who gave his best when it mattered most. But perhaps Seedorf is not 100% and Leonardo doesn't want to play not-100% players. Anyway, we will lose a lot without Seedorf.

Zambrotta's absence is a huge blow, too. But, there's a chance that Leo starts with Oddo, I mean why not, Leo is a coach who doesn't qualify player as "fit", and doesn't call him for matches, until he's 100% fit for 90 minutes, and as Oddo is called for this match - he's fully fit.

But overall, Manchester is hurt more in defense. Vidic's absence is huge, Ferdinand is a shadow of his former-self this season, some sources say he even lost it, Rafael is their first option at RB, and Evra is their best defender this season, which tells much. I just hope that Thiago Silva will start, because that will be crucial for us in this first match. Not because he's so good, which he is honestly, more because he adds a lot of pace and can cover Nesta when he's exposed for pace. It will need a lot of pace to deal with Rooney.

Finally, I'm not expecting great game for us - simply for a reason that we always gave our best in second leg. I would be very pleased with some minimum win say 1:0, or 3:1.

Apparently the San Siro has sold out 80,000 tickets (4,000 are Man Utd fans) and they have gotten an income of around 4million euros just from this game (I wonder who's pocket its going to go to).

Beckham is in the starting 11 (most likely) !!!!!! -Milannews.it

I don't know how I feel about this. This is maybe why we have Bonera at RB, Beckham will probably play right and deep, aiming to cross to Ronaldinho/Huntelaar or playing it short and fast to Pato. This might be a genius move by Leo. I hope so.... Better than Seedorf, I think. They can't stop Pirlo AND Beckham. LONG BALL MADNESS!

Means we're probably playing a flat 3 in the middle:

Beckham---Pirlo---Ambro

I think it's going to work. Bonera will hardly ever get past the halfway line, which is good, since Man Utd would rape us with counters.

Most of the overlapping on the right will be Beckham/Pato. On the left, Antonini/Ambro/Ronaldinho.

hmmm... a nice logical and tactical explanaition how to use space. Nice brk. I think it too, that this can work. Why Bonera? He is goood. He is a "old" right back, that doesn't let nobody coming from this side. HE is intelligent and can create the offside trap. He has pace, so that Antonini can stay more in front without fear that we will lose man behind, because Thiago can cover the left side, Bonera the right and Nesta the middle. And with 3 inteligent defender it is easyer to built the off-side trap. Of course, hope that the refree see all the offside trap.

Goal.com, just like milannews, also predicts that Wes Brown will be their RB. Now, that is a good news. Dinho will make him like a complete moron tonight.

About our own RB, I think it'll be safer to play Bonera than Abate. Defense-wise Bonera is better although Abate is slightly better at going forward. Leo said that we will try not to concede at home, and seeing MU's attack is mainly through their wide players, I think Bonera should get a nod instead of Abate.

i think the keys is keep a high tempo and get the ball out wide fast, we kill many of our own attacks by slowing down and then have to start passing the ball backwards or sideways allowing our opponents to set themselves and get organised, Evra will push foward and this will leave us lots of room for Pato to use in the space left behind, maybe even having Dinho and Pato swapping places every so often will keep the Man United defence working and guessing, either way no vidic means johnny evans or wes brown will come in to there defence, both can be reckless and not very sure.

Manure (as per Nalx :)) have 2 players who can make the difference: Rooney & Nani. We have to close them down. Thiago & Nesta can handle Rooney, I am sure.
As for Nani, i think he will be very tricky because he can play on either flank. So if we are playing Beckham-Pirlo-Ambro, Antonini & Ambro should be able to close him down on the right flank given Ambro/Pirlo are more attentive on the runs by the Manure midfielders behind Antonini (where we really suffered against Udine).
But if Nani attacks from the left, I will be more worried because Beckham does not offer the same defensively as Ambro & Nani will have the support of Evra who is way better than Wes Brown....
I hope that given this match is at San Siro we won't have to worry too much about their offence but let them worry about ours instead...Dinho-Klaas-Pato can totally destroy them at the back :)

What worries me though is how we're gonna play in the first few minutes. When we lost to Inter, we were completely outmuscled from the start. It was almost like we're surprised that they attacked straightly. Sneijder got his first chance around the 2th minute, then Milito scored in the 10th minute. We approached the match the way a small kid will act when he sees the bully walking towards him.

On the contrary, we seemed to have nothing to lose when we visited Bernabeu last year. There was a rumour that Leo would be shown the door if we failed to win. And right after the kick-off we played like hell. Dida made a howler alright, but we attacked and fought right until the end. This is the kind of spirit that I'd like to see from our team tonight.

No mate, that isn't good news. Wes Brown isn't the same idiot we all knew, he's grown into a good player. I'm afraid if he will be man-marking Ronaldinho, than Ron is out. Rafael was great for us at RB, but Fergie is not that dumb, unfortunately.

This flat 3 system provide us to deal with Nani no matter on which side he plays. I think with Beckam and Bonera on one side and Ambrosini and Antonini on the other, there's good balance between two sides, i.e. both sides are equally good at defending and going forward. But what side-effect that will produce for our play in the middle, that's what worries me...

Kaka1899
16-02-2010, 09:17
im sorry i might be tempting fate right now but Wes Brown is not a "Good" player, he is average and has been found out time and time again this season most noticeably by Jermain Beckford of Leeds United who are now in Coca-Cola League 1 the italian equivalent is Lega Calcio A/B,yes a league below Serie B, now unless you are saying our strikers are not as good as a League 1 striker i think we have a real good chance against him. this also means that Johnny Evans might be the replacement CB for Vidic, which again gives us a good chance, he was wreckless the other night pulling a player down in the box by the arm a certain penalty, the CL refs dont see it as Man United cant give a penalty against them, he will be German,French,Swiss,Portugese,Belgian,Dutch or Spanish etc he will give what he sees dont worry about that.

*EDIT*
Also i think Hunter should start get him playing well on a wave of confidence from his two goals vs Udinese he might be more of a handful than Borri who has not scored for a few weeks now, if it is not working throw on Borri or Pippo then.

Starting Wes Brown means Dinho will always have someone in front of him all the time and Park tracking back to double team.

I respectfully disagree, buddy. IMO Brown is oh-screw-it,better-than-play-with-10-men kind of player. His natural position is a CB. And even then, he's not impressive. He lacks the technic of Rio and the strength of Vidic. Even Johnny Evans is better than him.

SAF would rather play O'Shea if he was available. Rafael (or Fabio, I couldn't tell since their looks are so identical), from what I've seen, is an aggressive RB much like Gary Neville, only this kid seem to make too many fouls.

We have some very good free-kick takers: Beckham, Pirlo, and Dinho; as well as someone who can scores from header like Max, Hunter, even Dinho is quite good.

So it's almost like SAF needs to choose the lesser of the evil here

Mate, you've missed like last 3 years of Man Utd, it seems. :)

Brown was a CB, and he was horrible CB when he was young, so SAF transformed him into a RB and he was starting RB in Manchester which won CL title in 2008. O'Shea was their RB last season, because Brown was injured for whole season. This season, Brown played CB and not RB because both starting CBs (Ferdinand and Vidic) have been injured, and they have only Evans to replace them. Evans is better CB than Brown, I agree, but Brown is more than decent right back now. At least as good as O'Shea and overall MUCH better than Rafael.

People tends to rate FB only in attacks instead of defense.
Brown might not be the fastest FB around, but his positioning is not bad.
On top of that, Brown knows his role as a RB, which is to always stay in front of the opposing forwards instead of attacking.

The best RB to play against DInho is Rafael than Neville.

Official formations:

Milan (4-3-3): Dida - Bonera, Nesta, T. Silva, Antonini - Beckham, Pirlo, Ambrosini - Pato, Huntelaar, Ronaldinho.

Man Utd (4-3-2-1): Van Der Sar - Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra - Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes - Nani, Park - Rooney.

Everything as expected. Dida on goal unfortunately. It seems that the pitch is wet.

Fergie probably didn't want to risk Brown, because he's the only player he has on the bench capable to step in if one of CBs injures himself.

I dunno about Beckham...I hope Leo knows what he is doing and is not playing Becks just for the sentimental value. I would have played another DM in his place but Becks is hard working so I expect a good shift from him, both on defense and offense. His long balls to Pato and Dinho on the break could prove to be vital.

brk
16-02-2010, 14:17
Beckham ALWAYS steps up when the pressure is on, and especially when people doubt him (all of England now. They're all watching the game, and he wants to impress them all).

I have a good feeling about this line-up.

mrki
16-02-2010, 14:28
Im 1000% sure Seedorf is on the bench becouse he is not 100% fit. Also, I have to say we needed Beckham and not Flamini coz we needed another technical player.

Tonight, if we start running with them, we'll get raped. If we play smart and move a lot without the ball, we'll do fine.

IF we play a lot of long passes and loose our middle and Pirlo, Beckham cant run with their players, we are also in trouble.

All in all, I think United is a better team then us right now. But I also KNOW we have some gunpowder left! Milan with 4-3-3 in CL was never my option, but things are as they are now.

Have a good game and Forza Grande Milan!!

We are playing a good and a smart game. Limiting Manchester to scraps. We could have (should have) scored at least a couple more. When opportunities like those are presented to you in a game like this, you have to capitalize because almost always they come back and bite you. But we can't complain. We are playing a smart game and it is really unlucky that the score is 1-1 right now. We are handling the game much better then ManU right now.

As for their goal. It was a sequence of things that led to it. First, if Antonini didn't pull of injured on the same play....Manchester wasn't going to score, it's as simple as that. Antonini pulling off gave them the space on the left. That pulled Ambrosini out of position and Silva out of position......and that's why there was space in front of the goal. Very unfortunate for us...expecially when you put in persepctive that Scholes scored with the shin of the non-kicking foot. Perhaps Dida should have done much better with it. I feel like he had time to stop it.....but it is what it is and I don't totally blame him for it.

Also, Pato needs to step up. He is being shut down on the right side. He needs to pick it up a little bit.....as does Huntelaar.

Keep the faith brothers. We are playing good and smart. This Manchester team doesn't scare me at all after these first 45 minutes........even if at the end we have to go in England and win.

We scored the first goal thank to the "bicycle clear" of Evra.

Dida should do better at second goal, however, if one player miss the ball in his shoot, then the ball touch his pivot leg, change direction to the dead corner of the goal, every goalie will be supprised. Be tollerant.

I can, totally.
The moment we put Favalli on the pitch, I knew we'd probably have to settle for a draw at best.

We're heavily unbalanced right now with the fullbacks both not able to run up at all. The only players Man Utd have to worry about are the ones in the middle, since those will be the only ones able to support the attack. Bonera isn't match fit enough, and Favalli is just too old.

1-3..... I rest my case.

In my opinion, unless we get this match back up to a draw, theres no way we're going to progress at all.
We no longer have the player whos confident enough to inspire a victory like Kaka used to. Ronnie's not actually at his best just yet, and Pato hasn't matured just enough. A year on, maybe, but seriously not now.

I cannot fault our players tonight they played as best they could if this was 3 years ago we would of won that game easy , but the legs go around the 60 minute mark for two many key players in midfield if at least 5 players (10 was emotion speaking) don't arrive we won't even get this far next year.

I knew this evening would be bad when my the channel showing the match was unavailable on my TV, that Myp2p was down and my internet connection was bad ... the goal of ronaldinho (that I didn't see) gave me some hope that it wouldn't be that bad, but it was even worse !!

Nothing to say on the first half: we killed them, they scored a lucky goal, the only blame is about all these missed occasions !!

However, in second half ... we were worse than Portsmouth !! We totally slept for, well, 40 minutes ? MU didn't play better between the first and second half, we just stopped to play.

The only hope we can have (yes, I still see some light in the dark) is that when our guys scored the second goal, they showed that if we want, we can destroy them, clearly destroy them (not a chance to score for 40 minutes, a goal coming from nowhere, well, actually, coming from Favalli ... and then we managed to create 4-5 chances in a few seconds !!).

So, if we want to qualify, we'll need to play a complete game, reitarate this first half for 90 minutes, and play the 3 minutes of injury time in Old Trafford like we played the last 5 minutes in Milan !!

Forza Rossoneri !!

PS: This red card for Carrick is good news ...

seedorf should have come one earlier, he was full of confidence. This was Huntelaars chance to shine, he did ok but did not convince. We really desperately need a forward who is more than just a pure striker, we need someone like Rooney who can take initiative and do it all.

Revolver
16-02-2010, 16:51
For the first time this season, I think Ancelotti should stay. Leonardo's performance in this one was miserable. Ok, you can have one player staying up, you can even have two players on the occasion, but three, THREE players staying in front of the ball, how the hell Leonardo could let that happen against a team like Manchester is beyond me. :v46:

Also, we completely lost it in the second half. It's easiest to put all the blame on our side-backs, but they're not guilty at all. Our midfield lost energy, Seedorf should came on for Beckham before we conceded second, because that straight midfield 3 did not work, it should be switched to 2-1, with Seedorf pressing high up. Ambrosini's walking back is not the way that Milan's captain should play, ok I know he's tired, but it's not the way that Milan captain should play, again. Defense should not be blamed because they had no support. Huntelaar didn't have enough balls to score. But, it's clear that he is not the striker we need in this system. He can't do anything on his own, he can't hold the ball, co-commentator on my local station, coach of one team in our league, said that if Milan would have Dzeko, they'd be the best team in the world.

It will need a miracle to for us to qualify for quarters, but the first thing to do is to alter this system, so that our two wide strikers help in defending, a no more flat 3 in midfield, and please no more Dida.

This win of ManUtd was really something to celebrate for Alex. He saw that Antonini was injured, and we had to play Favalli. Immediately, Alex played Valencia and he tore our left flank. Two goals started there. If only we had Janku, it wouldn't have happened. I know many of you are not big fans of Kaladze, but even this guy could've done better. Well, we didn't really have options, really unfortunate.

We could have killed the game earlier if Antonini or Hunter didn't waste their respective chance. Then, ManUtd got the fluke goal, we lost the momentum built with the early goal scored by Ronaldinho, and they just made three goals, a humiliation for us.

We refused to give up. Seedorf scored a what I don't want to call a consolation, then Pippo almost got the job done if he'd finished Dinho's superb pass with an equalizer.

Now, we really need to think how we could do things differently in the Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford. I hope by that time, Leo would have Boriello available. Pacey full-backs like Zambro, Janku or Oddo would also be extra weapons.

A win in Manchester? We are Milan. Impossible is nothing.

The first was an absolutely 2 km/hr joke while the second was a cross that was in the air for about 10 minutes. Milan deserves better from their #1.

EDIT: The main reason we lost were those chances we missed after we went 1-0 up. Ronaldinho's shot, Antonini's shot as well as Huntelaar's break away chance. If one of those chances were taken then it would probably have been all over.

Antonini was injured in first half (40th) ... Valencia came in in second half, around the 55th. Immediately ?

How do you think I would have said it better? LONG AFTER THAT..?

Ferguson made a wise sub. When Valencia came, everything changed.

Exactly! I can't agree more.

Someone to complement Pato, someone who can act as a target man, hold the ball, who has physical presence, who is good with the ball at his feet and is aggressive and can take on players. If we had such a player we would be complete.

Guys don't be naive and put the blame on Favalli. I saw few posts ago that we conceded first goal because of Favalli, how the hell that could happen when the guy wasn't even on the pitch?! :v46:

The battle in second half was lost in midfield! Not at the sides but at the midfield! And it started about 40 minutes into the game. Our attacking trio is as passive in defense as it could get, so our midfield was put on the tremendous pressure, and when midfield was gone, we suffered, best shown on third goal. With no help from midfield defense can't do nothing.

This is a price we pay for not having proper fullbacks period. moan and complain as much as you want, beckham was useless all the game long, seedorf should be brought on half time to hold possession, seedorf was very hungry bring him in, dont wait untill u are 2 goals behind. beckham go back to L.A

I'm not blaming lady luck many times but the key word for this game is : UNLUCKY !!! what a sh*tty scholes goal, also antonini was out injured when they scored and from his side came that cross, silva had to cover the left side and was missed in the center.

Favalli was utter crap, valencia had so much time to cross. After the 1-2 the team looked knock out... thats why manU scored that 3th goal. luckely we recovered after that, and after seedorfs goal we couldve easely scored a 3th. pippo, max, silva/nesta...

It was a GREAT GAME, GREAT ATMOSPHERE, and I'm very proud off this team tonight, we deserved sooooooo much more!!!!

LMAO. Tell that coach he doesnt know sht (thats why he is coaching in that league)

Whats next man Dzeko walks on water, parts the sea, etc. We neeed mids and defense first. Now i really want this Dzeko guy to come so he can either shut my mouth or i can bash every last one of you that cant get off his nutz. We out played ManU most of the match. After Antonini got injured things started to tumble. I dont see what Dzeko was going to do diffrent.

Actually, I wanted to say something else but also wanted to write quickly ...

What I wanted to say was that there was no real relation between the injury of Antonini and the replacement of Nani by Valencia.

Even with Antonini in, Ferguson would have replaced Nani by Valencia because Nani just made a terrible show (the new C.Ronaldo ?! Ahah) and signs of anger appeared on Rooney after all the missing passes of Nani.

So this replacement was a "must be done" one, for 2 reasons:
- the bad performance of Nani
- the fact that Nani's performance pissed off Rooney who already had a yellow card

The first goal was a fluke. But the second and the third started on our left flank of defensive line. Actually, after Favalli was in for Antonini, Ambro even Dinho went down more often to help. But Valencia was just really having his night. Nothing to be blamed about but perhaps our luck! Antonini was playing very well before he got the injury.
