I have just finished watching barcelona winning the world cup, and decided to open this thread... what was the dominante club of the decade?
1. Barcelona. Well I'm sorry, but you simply have to hand it to them. They managed to put up 3 great squads in the last 10 years, and provide the most entertaining football. There was Louis van gaal Barcelona, a great team. With the likes of Rivaldo, Luis Enriqe, Overmars, Kluivert and others they provided some memorable displays. I remember them trashing arsenal and fiorentina in 2000 CL. But that team wasn't stable, they weren't great... they did win couple La liga titles, but couldn't do it in the CL, always failing to perform in the closing stages. also there was always some middle season crysis, or sudden drop form for that Barcelona.
Then came Rijkard and truely managed to build a great team, the team that won that double in 2006 producing maybe the most thrilling football of the decade... with players like Ronaldinho, Deco, Eto'o. Messi was discovered in that years, but wasn't the main axis like he is today. I personaly enjoyed more Ronaldinho's Barca than today Messi's.
and there is today barcelona of Guordiola's Barcelona, that is surely most succesfull of the decade if u look on the trophies... 6 in one year, what can u say? This team u may say is direct continuity of Rijkard's era, but there are a lot of new faces also, and Messi is their main leader and Ibra is a big addition.
2. Milan.
Milan dominated europe from 03 to 07. in 03 we came out of nowhere unexpected, won the CL. Shevchenko's ironicly worst season ever (well if u don't count sheva 76), he managed to score the crucial goal in the semis and the penalty in the final (well he also scored in the final, but it was wrongly dissalowed). The next year we discovered Kaka and our team became much more fun to watch, also our new midfielders (seedorf and pirlo) began to work together. The next 2 years we should have won the CL, as we were the dominante force in europe. Instead we shot ourself in the leg twice, giving away 3 goals advantage to Depor in 04 and Liverpool in 05. This is something that can't be understood, and never should ancheloti be forgiven for that. We also were by far the best team in italy, but somehow managed to win only one title... well there was in 99, but that is different story. Milan and Roma were the only teams that played real football, but somehow juve and inter had won every year. Our squad of 05 is classic, it's the best milan i have seen. Sheva-Crespo-Kaka- Pirlo- Seedorf-Gatusso- Cafu, Nesta, Stam, Maldini- Dida. It's perfect.
In 2006 we have to admit we were outplayed by Barca. The 07 win was similar somehow to the 2003, out of nothing. In differnce to other clubs, Milan had only one team this decade, and that is ancheloti's. Biggest problem of milan i think, that the process of changing eras is taking too long. It took like 4 years to build 2003 Milan, the milan of 99-02 was crap, poor sheva druged it on his shoulders. Now is the same with Pato. Come to think of that, we did't made any significal signings in the defencive midfield since 2003, 6 years is a lot of time.
3. Manchester United.
Lets just say there was Beckham era, and CR7 era in the last decade. Won a lot of premierships, twice the CL, lost one final. They played some spectacular football in the 99, and the beginings of 2000. Van Nisterlooj was also a massive force, there was a time he was considered as the best striker in the world. after Beck's departure they had some crapy years, until sir alex managed to build a new team that was built on ronaldo. Even though i didn't like this squad, they managed to win some gold medals in CL and england, so u have to acknowledge them.
4. Real Madrid.
well some may argue that real should be rated higher, and some may argue lower. Well u have to admite they influence last decade. i don't like when a club instead of building a team simply buys it like in pc game, and that's why they are rated 4th. They won CL in 98, (Figo) 00, (Zidane) 02, but where have they been last 7 years? in 2001-2002 they were the greatest team, Galacticos, but that project wasn't too succesful. Sometimes players didn't work well together, like Zidane- Figo or Ronaldo-Raul. Some were useless like Owen and Beckham... well Beck managed to make an impact only in his last year. Towards it's end, the project Galacticos was simply ridicilous.
after 2003 the project began to crumble, they didn't win anything for 3 years, and when they did win la liga in 07 it was more a loss of barca than real win, and they weren't Galacticos anymore. Last 5 years were beaten in 1/8 of CL, and failed to produce any good football.
This days it seems they are building new Galacticos project, lets see how they'll do.
Teams left out:
Chelsea- doesn't deserve to be in the list.
Bayern- were great between 99-01, but have reduced since. This year though it seems they re-establishing themself as european force, and i wish them luck.
So what do u think? Whom would u add to the list?
