In Ballack's case, "free" meant - before Chelski got involved - investing in him 30 mil on wages. Now that Roman is in the picture - and both sides have proclaimed their admiration of one another - that sum went up to more than 40 mil (45 mil I think) as Chelski are likely to make Ballack one of the highest paid players not only in England but in the world.
