Ironically, among the first board of directors was Pierro Pirelli who was the grandson of Giovan Battista Pirelli, the founder of the famous tyre company in 1872.This is ironic because the Pirelli tyre company has been a big sponsor in recent years of the club's greatest rivals, Inter Milan. They now had a board and people willing to participate, the next thing on the agenda was to find somewhere to play. Not long after registering with the Italian Football Federation, they located a countryside field named Trotter.

After a brief time trying to promote cricket in the area, the founders realised that the locals were more interested in football than bats and wickets and this is why they decided to concentrate their efforts on this particular sport. Edwards, as the first president, set a fee of twenty lira for people wanting to join the club or twelve lira if you were a student. If anyone did not pay their fee then their punishment was the interdiction to train.

Now that they were going to be concentrating their efforts on football, Herbert decided that they needed a proper club strip. He decided on red and black stripes as many English football teams played in stripes and English football teams were the best around.As well as designing the club strip, Herbert also designed the club badge to go on the club strip. He incorporated the flag of St. George which is a red cross on a white background, the flag of England.Now, they were ready.

On the 11th March 1900, AC Milan managed and captained by Herbert Kilpin walked out on to the Trotter Field for their first recorded football match. It was played against a local team called Mediolanum and the team that day had a distinctly Anglo-Italian feel: Hoode, Cignaghi, Torretta, Lees, Kilpin, Valerio, Dubini, Davies, Neville, Allison and Formenti. Herbert, David and Samuel were instrumental in a resounding 3-0 victory. Although this was only a friendly, it was the beginning of the history of one of the world's great clubs. Herbert Kilpin had achieved his dream of achieving something really worthwhile. By the time of his death as a hero in World War One, he was a local legend who had started something that eventually gripped the entire community. He had introduced the sport of football.
