MILAN - Here are the declarations of coach Leonardo during the press conference ahead of the Luigi Berlusconi Trophy.
ON THE BERLUSCONI TROPHY - 'We are going to San Siro with most of the group for the first time in this pre-season. We'll finally have a high percentage of the team available. We are playing against a direct opponent, it's a match with great tradition, certainly an appointment we have to face with the right concentration and mentality.'
ON THE OPPORTUNITY OF BUYING MORE PLAYERS - 'The basis of the team has been there for a while, and it's a basis of extraordinary champions, who have won everything. The market will not determine what Milan will be like the coming season: if from now until 31 August there will be a new arrival, it will be minor. I think it's important we get a full back, but today I see those we have and who we have available, and I say that, if we put everything in order, we can have a great season.'
ON THE BALANCE OF THE PREPARATIONS - 'I don't want the absence of important players in this pre-season to be an excuse, but it's evident that it took its toll. During the preparation we never had certain fundamental players available, others started working with the group but were forced to stop, while others didn't train consistently. But we can't deny we also struggled a lot. However, I can't think that this preparation describes what Milan are and will be. It's true, we had difficult moments and there were defeats, but we also had many positive things, such as the lack of serious injuries: the result from a physical point of view was certainly a good aspect of these preparations.'
ON MILAN'S REAL POSSIBILITIES - 'Realistically what must change in this team is the attitude. The basis is formed by champions who have won everything, many of which have been here for almost ten years. It's clearly an extraordinary basis. Now we have to work on the motivation, the pride, it's about putting together the personal and team objectives and start from there. Milan have won everything but want to continue growing, compete again: to do that you need the right stimulation. Take Nesta: he not only recovered from his injury but also changed attitude: he is available to excess, he does anything we ask, sometimes we have to stop him. If everyone of us finds a personal motivation the way Nesta did, we'll have something more that can take us far. I don't want to be optimistic at all costs, but it's clear that Milan cannot be the team seen until now. The talent is undeniably there in this team. There's also spirit of sacrifice, order and discipline. The ingredients are all there to win. We cannot enter a tunnel of pessimism. The team must do better, but I am calm: now is the time to restart, I believe in it. If we give everything we have, we can have a good season. The basis is there, as is the playing idea. We just need to restart.'
ON RONALDINHO: "In the last three years he hasn't managed to express himself at the height of his talent; if we think of what he was three/four years ago, we are far from that Ronaldinho, but if we think of recent times he's been doing better, he has grown, he is trying to get back to his best. He is a healthy player, he's done the entire preparation, he's doing well and he's changed his position on the pitch a bit. He has to take his responsibilities, he has to increase in consistency, but he is putting in effort. His job is to perform on the pitch, be on time for the trainings and doing well. He is doing that sometimes, but he needs to find more consistency.'
ON HUNTELAAR: 'I already appreciated that he wanted to play the Tim Trophy after just one training with us. Obviously he has to enter our playing mechanisms, slowly he will do it.'
ON THE FORMATION: 'We started with an idea and then lately we have returned to our trademark system which is the 4-3-1-2. It's a system that requires effort and fatigue, it's obvious that we all have to be at our best even though we know it perfectly. The tactical aspect doesn't worry me because I know we only need to grow athletically. For the future we have other ideas, we'll see on each occasion also on the basis of the men we have available.'
