What the CL is really worth

I was thinking about posting this in the Discussions thread, but then it is largely to do with the CL, so i posted it here.

Here is an interesting snippet of news i found:

A study for sponsors Mastercard, claims that whoever wins this season's Champions League competition will net up to £68million, a figure which excludes additional prize money from UEFA and gate receipts.

KRC Research also discovered that the winning team's home city also receives a large cash injection. It is claimed that the city of Liverpool benefited to the tune of £47m last year following their success in the competition.

I've highlighted the key areas as this is only a claim so far and not proof that the winners will win this amount. Also that the amount will be up to £68 million, so the final figure maybe short of that.

You can see the idea though of just how much progression into the group stages and possibly beyond means in financial terms. Even if we don't win it, a good run is worth millions for both the city and the club.

68 Mil Pound is around 75 Mil Euro isit? It doesnt sounds that farfetched considering every single team who's qualified for CL will get, what, 30 Mil Euro? And that's just for the initial participation. And UEFA will get us the Lion's share in TV rights as we go further.

I don't think the City of Liverpool received one lump sum from UEFA. I think it's more of a total money from taxes and visitors. Nevertheless, that's a LOT of monies.

Yes ct, you're right about the money going to the city of Liverpool isn't a lump sum from UEFA.

I think each qualified team for the CL group stages will get about £12 million, so that's nearer 20 million euros than 30 million euros. But it's still a hefty sum.

to be honest though, what difference does it make, we don't have the depth to even think about winning europe this season, Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea are way ahead of us. Inter have more of a shot so the money we save going for a fat striker instead of a good one will probably be lost due to an early exit.

well, if Milan saw things this way, what difference would it make whether we will spend 200 mil for new players or add no one at all and keep the current sqaud?
Either way, with this approach, we'll be doomed so, maybe we shouldn't bother competing at all.

the difference would be that if we spent 200 million on new players we'd have a much better squad and a much better chance of winning more competitions.
