For those who are asking, Stam clearly fouled Rocchi in the area. It was a Lazio counterattack. Stam tackled Rocchi (not the ball) from behind in the area and planted his studs in Rocchi's side. It's about as clear a penalty as you can get. Then he got a yellow card for mouthing off, I think. He didn't seem to be protesting. I hope he was swearing at himself, because he had a rotten game.

as for the penalty, this is just my opinion: liverani launched the long ball and broke the defense immediately, stam was chasing, rocchi had better position, but it seemed that he was not going to get it either, or at least he won't get it comfortably. stam reached out his foot for the ball, and rocchi reached out his chest for stam's foot. and the call, or even the yellow card has no problem, i just can't believe an experienced defender as stam could be outsmarted in such an embarrassing way.

hats off to ancelotti when substituting cafu, keeping stam on pitch. that could be a disastrous blow for stam. liverani must feel a little pissed off after he was called upon cesar's injury, after he built up their goal, had to leave the pitch because of the coach.

and hats off to me suggesting to ancelotti using cafu-serginho-sheva. he must have checked MM before he makes all the moves.

one last note, i feel for tomasson. he looked very frustrated and helpless when he was substituted. i know that was almost the only right thing to do under that certain circumstance. and i certainly don't blame ancelotti for it, at least not this time. i just hope that the great happiness of winning this game will be more than enough to beat the disappointment for this loyal fighter of ours.

kaka' had some very nice assists and worked very well with shevchenko. i felt that the rest of the team was rather off today. couldn't really help eachother...they were misinturpreting passes-just didn't seem organized. but thankfully sheva stepped in and gave that amazing goal.

I wanted to add that Milan's first half was shameful. I know nine-man defenses are hard to break down, but the only ones who seemed to realize there was a scudetto on the line were Ancelotti and Nesta. "Lethargic" best describes the team, at least until Shevchenko came on.

Shevchenko or Nesta as the next captain of Milan! And those of you who still think Nesta is a laziale at heart didn't see him working his butt off intercepting balls, trying to kickstart a lackadaisical attack and yelling at nonchalant teammates.

This wasn't a case of Milan not being able to finish in spite of playing well. In the first half of this game, Milan had plenty of possession but never bothered to get out of low gear -- not a pretty sight.

Milan are lucky to have Shevchenko. Serginho and Cafu were great subs, although Kaladze didn't play badly. Stam sucked, as I said. Gattuso, Seedorf and Kaka' kept giving the ball away. Nobody could cross.

Well, given that Lazio's new coach, Papadopulu or whatever his name was, coached a team of the rank of Siena before coming to Rome could easily explain why a team, once considered one of the big teams in Serie A, came to SS only to defend. My point is that the team's play is a mirror image of their coach's mentality and provincial understanding of the game. Lazio may not have the outstanding squad from 3-4 years ago but they do have the players to perform at a much better level than they do now. The provincial mentality of a coach like Papadopulu, however, will force them to fight for avoiding relegation, in the end.

It is a great win indeed for us! The perfect getting out of jail act. Our performance was far from perfect especially in the first half. But Lazio for the second time this season paid a price for scoring first against Milan.

IMO, Ancelotti did the absolute correct thing in starting Cafu and Sheva from the bench:

1) Cafu is an extremely important player for us. One of the main offensive sparks in our team and he has been playing a hell of a lot of games at his age. With the Utd. game coming up he needed some rest and seeing this as a Milan HOME GAME against a weakened Lazio it was the perfect opportunity to rest him.

2) Sheva was returning from an ankle injury so you cannot start him from scratch. Sheva looked fit but you just cannot risk re-injuring the world's best striker when a much more important game is coming up in a fortnight.

A) The other players should've raised their game in the absence of our two stars. They were lazy, spraying wrong passes and not urgent enough especially in the first half.

B) It was correct to start Stam and play him at right back so that he plays together with Maldini and Nesta and co-ordinates more with them. The co-ordination is still lacking and Stam's drop-kick was blatant.

C) It was noticeble that Crespo and Tomasson didn't move their lazy butts at all when Milan had the possession and were attacking. They just made the run towards the box and stand there next to the Lazio defence. That is criminal. There were quite a few instances when Kaka + Stam could've well done with a forward running towards them and supporting them to make a TRIANGLE but no. Crespo and Tomasson didn't move. Off the ball running was terrible on their part. They pressed and made the effort in the box but when we were attacking both of them were predictable just making plain runs in the box but not helping out on the flanks. One of them had to provide support in a tight situation. They didn't. That needs to be worked on.

D) Passing was not good. Lots of inaccurate passes and loss of possession. It comes down to concentration. It wasn't ambitious passing ... just plain bad misdirect passing. Credit to Lazio for being well-organized as well.


Sheva's strike was stupendously unbelievable and delightfully classic! Cometh the hour, cometh the Bomber!

I liked our fluidity after Carlo shifted to the 3-4-1-2. We were all over Lazio and countered their 5 midfielders astutely! Kaka finally got some room to nail the shot and did so only for the post to deny him. Crespo got his studs to it and scored. Inches from a double miss but not to be! Crespo gets credit as he scored the most important winning goal for us this season in the Serie A at the time of this writing! Give him credit. Bad goal, good goal, iffy goal or whatever! It is the most important winner for us this season in the Serie A.

I am happy with the result. It is tough to score freely after scoring 4 in the previous game. We got out of jail but fortune favours the brave. We were brave, gritty and showed mental fortitude to savour the day!

These words come directly from our Giovanni who is ,i believe still ,near the scene of the event!His comment on Crespo`s last minute goal and i quote :

Milan left it very late indeed as Hernan Crespo scored against his former teammates to cut the gap to two points.

The Rossoneri would bring themselves within two points of leaders Juventus with a victory here and were boosted by their midweek 4-1 mauling of Messina. Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta and Hernan Crespo took on their former club, while Andriy Shevchenko was not risked from the start. The Ukrainian was originally ruled out for a fortnight with an ankle injury, but instead returned to the bench within seven days.

Lazio left Paolo Di Canio on the bench and surprisingly opted to place Giuliano Giannichedda at the centre of a three-man defence. They made it clear from the start that they were going to stay solid and pour forward on the counter-attack with Tommaso Rocchi and Goran Pandev.

Inter-owned Pandev took advantage of a defensive error and drilled wide from the edge of the box, then at the other end a Milan corner kick was cleared with some difficulty.

The first real chance came after 26 minutes as the Rossoneri passed the ball around and eventually cut back for a fierce Clarence Seedorf strike from the edge of the box that Angelo Peruzzi got his fists behind.

There was bad news for the Biancocelesti when Cesar limped off with a suspected thigh strain after just half an hour and made way for Fabio Liverani.

Lazio had another dangerous counter-attack when Antonio Filippini got to the byline and his low cross cut all the way across the face of goal without anyone able to get the final touch.

Jaap Stam nearly netted against his old club when he rose to make contact with Andrea Pirlo's corner kick, but it was deflected off target.

Lazio were causing real problems down the right flank and another dangerous cross, this time from Massimo Oddo, whistled just past Rocchi in the centre.

A desperate Giannichedda challenge prevented Crespo from tapping in Kakha Kaladze's pass from eight yards as the pressure increased. The former Chelsea star then failed to make the most of Pirlo's searching pass as his first touch let him down.

On the stroke of half-time, an acrobatic Jon Dahl Tomasson attempt on Crespo's headed assist was closed down by the ever-attentive Giannichedda.

Kaka scared the Lazio defence with a burst of pace and Tomasson was unable to make the most of it, while Antonio Filippini disposessed Pirlo and Fabio Liverani's shot was too central to really trouble Dida.

The breakthrough came when Rocchi sprinted into the box on Liverani's pass and Stam mistimed his challenge to bring down the striker. The referee pointed to the spot and Massimo Oddo fired in the penalty despite Dida getting a hand to it.

Carlo Ancelotti threw on Andriy Shevchenko, Serginho and Cafu in a desperate bid to get back on track with a three-man defence, while Antony Seric also came on for Liverani, as the substitute was suffering from a muscular problem.

Within a minute of coming on the Ukrainian had fired a long-range effort just wide of the target. Then his header was wayward from a Serginho cross as Lazio were pegged back into their own half.

The visitors were even more determined to play on the counter now and Nesta's crucial intervention stopped Pandev completing his move with Rocchi.

Crespo got on the end of Cafu's cross and Angelo Peruzzi was ready to smother it at the near post.

Moments later Gennaro Gattuso passed out to Shevchenko and his wayward half-volley saw Crespo come sliding in and miss the tap-in by inches.

Shevchenko certainly made his comeback with a bang, as he curled a simply stunning free kick into the top corner from 25 metres to give Milan a deserved equaliser.

Lazio needed a strong character and it came in the form of Paolo Di Canio, here facing his former club.

Shevchenko then turned provider for Cafu and his shot blazed just over the bar, while Crespo again just failed to get on the end of a Cafu headed assist.

Fernando Couto dived in to intercept Serginho's cutback for Pirlo inside the penalty area as it turned into a siege, then Stam blazed over the bar from distance.

Deep into stoppages the game was eventually turned in Milan's favour in chaotic fashion. Kaka's piledriver thumped the woodwork and came back out to an unmarked Hernan Crespo to tap into an empty net against his former club.
