Serie A Suspended!!
http://www.channel4.com/sport/footba...lia/feb2p.html
This is absolutely insane. I can't believe what happened tonight, and I actually support the FIGC's decision. |

For Italian calcio is one scandal after another...
people need to realize that this is not about LIFE or DEATH... but purely about enjoying life following your team... that is barbaric... check Gazzetta dello Sport for coverage... well, it's in Italian, but still... www.gazzetta.it

Violence in stadiums
This thread starts the day of the tragedy during the Catania vs. Palermo game, on 2/2/2007.
A 38 year old police man was killed while they were trying to control Catania's supporters... FIGC has suspended this weekend remaining matches... In several countries, violence in stadiums has increased... Argentina league had to stop during the last season because of this... Countries with tradition of being very safe and having relaxed crowds in stadiums like Mexico are now revising law to prevent violence growth... Rivalries shouldn't be like that... should be about chanting, singing, yelling, celebrating... maybe even rubbing one's victory in the face of the opponent... but not about hitting, shooting, bombing...

This is what you get when you mix football and politics, unfortunately. The whole situation is extremely sad.
But, the fact that the FIGC has made this move actually makes me believe that calcio can be cleaned up, much like what they did in England. With this and Calciopoli, the authorities are finally making the right moves. |

Well this will do wonders for the reputation of calcio, already at an all time low. Correct decision made by the FIGC. Don't really know what to else to say, but football should not be like this.

On the BBC World:
They say that 12 years ago when similar thing happened where one fan was killed due to the clashes between Milan and Genoa fans, all the matches were suspended for one day. However this incident is a lot bigger than the one happened 12 years ago so this time the suspension will be long, may be until all the investigations are carried out. The journo also said that there was some sort of explosion, in or around the stadium.

it will give us more time to get Kaladze and Ronaldo more match fit..
But its not good news, its bad for the already damaged image of Italian football, and is bad for the image of Sicily (who already has a mafia stereotype) My thoughts go to the family and friends of the policeman tonight!

Hooliganism is now the Italian Disease. Perhaps the IFFC ought to take a page from England's book and impose a multiyear Europe ban.
May the perpetrators of this disgusting incident burn in hell for eternity. Congratulations. |
