Kaka got Italian:
http://www.channel4.com/sport/footba...ia/feb12o.html Milan star Kaka is officially an Italian citizen after a ceremony in the northern city this afternoon. “I’m honoured,” he said. The Brazilian international was rewarded with dual nationality today given his peninsula roots and he’s delighted with his new status. “I’m honoured and really am happy,” he underlined. “I’m now Italian and Brazilian. “This will help me in the future and I’m sure it can also be of some use to Milan. I really am Italian in all aspects now and an integral part of this Italian club.” Kaka’s fresh citizenship means that the Rossoneri can register him as an Italian and thus free-up a non-EU spot in their squad ahead of their summer transfer campaign. The 24-year-old, who obviously can’t play for Italy given his Brazilian career, joined the San Siro boys in 2003 from Sao Paulo. He was an instant hit with the fans and is now an integral part of boss Carlo Ancelotti’s plans at the Stadio Meazza. Kaka, a known transfer target for Real Madrid, signed a new Milan contract until June 2011 last summer. ![]()

I guess channel 4 got confused with the non-eu rules in Spain and most other european countries where the number of non-Eu players a team can own is fixed and when one of them becomes a eu citizen, he frees up a spot for another non-Eu player to be bought ... that's not the case with Italy, however.

hmm i thought it was every club is entitled to bring one additional EU player..so lets say Dida left, and we got another non-EU in his place, that means we did nothing..and we will still be allowed to bring in one more to the squad..
anyway even though that was the case im sure Galliani and co. will use their ways to bend the rules and let other teams like Atalanta, Brescia buy the players and loan them to us. |

unfortunately, that's not how the rules in Italy work - even if Milan were to sell all of our current non-EU players, next year we can still get only one non-EU player from outside of Italy. This is why Galliani has warned the Italian federation that if these rules aren't changed quickly, Italian teams would find themselves at an even bigger disadvantage compared to teams from other European leagues.
the reason is that the current rules do not allow Italian teams to be flexible in their transfer market because say, next year there are 4-5 great talents coming out of Brazil, Argentina or Ghana ... in this case Real M could weigh in their options and decide to sell all of their 5 current non-EU players and go for all those 4-5 new talents, while Milan, no matter how many non-EUs we sell, we can go for only one of them. As for bending the rules, Milan could still buy more than one non-EU player but we cannot register in the squad more than one of them ... the rest, however, we can loan, or whatever it is they do under the table, to another Itaian team and next year get them back as they will already be considered "local" players. it's an option but this will force Milan to invest in too many players who will not bring an immediate return of the investment, which would be possible if Milan had say 100-200 mil stashed away for rainy days and their transfer policy wasn't so heavily dependent on earnings from TVrights, tickets, CL ... money which are immediately used to pay salaries, stadium fees for the city of Milano, etc, etc.

Tru Zlat, but it also allows us to see the benefits of our investment, in teams where they would be guaranteed starters...as opposed to being squad players for us.
There is an upside to this, we (i.e. Management) just need to be creative. So, let me ask this...if we go for Robinho next year, does he take up a "non-EU" place, if (and I dont kno this) he has only a Brazilian passport, and has already a year or so in Spain, ie within the EU? I think the answer to this would be yes, he would take up the single non-EU spot...but I always like to defer to the rulemeister!

What you said is true for players like Grimi, who is a player who'd be better off playing regularly for Atalanta or Empoli for instance rather than polish the bench at the San Siro on a regular basis. Such players do not exact a big financial investment to begin with.
I however was referring to getting very prominent players who are already stars and subsequently be very expensive - players like Robinho, Gago, Pato, Marcelo, Diarra, etc, etc. Getting these players would be a considerable investment and a club cannot aford to stash them for a whole season away at Empoli, which would be more or less equal to you needing all the money you can get to cover your expenses ASAP, yet you decide to put 70-80 mil in a bank account without the right to withdraw the money for one whole year. Real bought Gago, Marcello, and Diarra within the span of one season, something that no Italian club could have possibly done because of the current non-EU rules in Italy ... I guess that clearly shows how big Milan's disadvantage is when it comes to attarcting some of the best players available. And, yes, Robinho is non-EU player, and so is Ronaldinho, so, unless one of them doesn't get a Spanish passport by the summer - I think Dinho should soon be getting his - we would have to choose who to go for as the rules won't allow us to get them both. Which is why I think Milan has singled out Robinho as a back up option in case we aren't able to get Ronaldinho.

Ronaldinho is about to get his Spanish passport... it was scheduled for last December, but guess it could now happen before the middle of this year...

let me clarify this for myself so if Dinho gets his spanish passport that would enable us to sign both Dinho and Robinho, Dinho as a Eu player and Robinho as a non-eu player? am i correct?
