Wow this thread is really nice and informative. I learned so much more from reading some of the long posts. That was a neat story about the fog at Belgrade.

The return match was played on November 9th, in front of +90 000 in Marakana stadium in Belgrade. There was a fog but the match could have been played. Red Star had around 80% of the possesion, had all the chances, had everything.
Finally in 50th minute Savicevic scored a cracker. Brilliant shot under the crossbar.
Red Star took the lead and continued attacking all the time. Milan players were totally lost.
And then.......the fog
Even if there were conditions for the match to be played until 62nd minute, the fog that felt after that was unbelievable. You couldn't see a finger in front of you. Milan players started begging the official ref to stop and postpone the match and even Red Star players asked him to stop the match temporarly.
The fog got even more thick and there were absolutly no conditions for the match to continue. The other day, the ref said " I couldn't watch grown man crying and begging me on their knees to stop the match"

Right after the ref said the match is postponed for the next day Milan players and officials didn't go directly to the hotel but they went to the Belgrade catholic church !

The next day, on the same stadium the match started again, but not from where it stopped ( minute 62). It started from minute 1.
This match was more equal. Red Star wasn't so dominant as they were the day before.
The match ended 1:1 ( Van Basten 1:0 , Stojkovic 1:1) and Milan went through after penalty shots.

Sorry Toni....but you are wrong about Stella Rossa dominating the return game on 10/11/1988....

I have watched all 3 games.....and Milan dominated the game at the San Siro.Savicevic had just 1 shot....and overall....had a poor game.....probably because he was not match fit....he was doing his military service that season...but was given special dispensation to play in Stella Rossa's european games.Also Mussi ,Baresi and Rijkaard gave Savicevic no time on the ball.
Savicevic is then substituted by Merkela who sets up Stojkovic for one of the few chances that Stella Rossa have.Milan on the other hand have 4-5 clear chances in the 1st half...and at least 4 good chances in the 2nd.Donadoni hits the post,Ancelloti narrowly shoots wide in both halfs....Virdis misses an open goal ....Maldini has a header saved by Stojanovic....Gullit has a goal bound header deflected over the bar...and Van Basten has 3 shots at goal....one of which is saved by Stojanovic.....the other 2 fly over the bar...and a Van Basten header just misses in the dying minutes of the game.

Milan also dominate the game at the maracana on the 10/11/1988.....

Stella Rossa were very lucky to take Milan to a penalty shoot out.
If it had not been for goalkeeper Stojanovic....the score would have been at least Stella Rossa 1-4 Milan in that game.

The fog in Belgrade story is super cool. I wonder if they prayed to Saint Sebastian the patron saint of sports and soldiers.

Paolo Maldini, the legacy

This is his last season as a player... after 24 seasons with Milan (yes, that's right 24) he's saying goodbye.

We all remember him in that excellent defensive line with Baresi, Costacurta and Tassotti (you can add Galli) from the late 80's and early 90's... but you may not know how it all started.

He was born 5 years after his father Cesare had already lifted what we now know as the Champions League as Milan's captain in the 1963 final.

He played football in school, but not really with the intention of becoming a professional player... it was until he was a teenager that he was taken to the Milan youth sector managers... I can't remember the names, but one of the scouts took him to the Primavera manager and told him something like "the kid plays in defense... don't feel committed to give him a spot just because he's Cesare's son... if you think you can use him, keep him... if not, just let him go".... now we know they were able to use him... for 24 years, and more silverware than a catering supply company.

The strange thing is that he started playing in the RB position... actually in his Serie A debut, when he was 16, and because pretty much every other Milan defender was injured, he played RB. Keep in mind this is even before the 1986 WC in Mexico. Italy had won the WC in Spain 3 years before, with great defenders like Scirea, Collovati, Baresi, Bergomi, etc.

He's naturally right handed, but always had good control of the ball with both legs, so he was used also in the left side, and made a career out of that position, for him, and for many other players who started following him.

By 1988 he was already in the Italian NT that went to the Euro... in one of the most impressive matches ever for a defender, the 19 year old took care of Michel, the star of Real Madrid and the Spain NT, and pretty much didn't allow him to touch the ball in the entire game. From there, to the WC in Italy, were he was confirmed as a star.

By 1994, the same year he got married to Venezuelan model Adriana Fossa, at 26 years of age, and after a sad defeat in the WC final in USA, he received the captain's armband from Franco Baresi... one he wore from that day, and until the elimination of Italy in the Korea/Japan WC by Byron Moreno (ooops, sorry, I meant by the Korean NT)...

No one has ever played more games with Milan, or with the Italian NT... now Cannavaro is the only one who seems like he could reach that number, but let's remember Maldini could have played in the NT at least for 4 more years.

He forgot Dida too.

Dida and Barbosa are the only black GKs ever to start in the WC for Brazil.

I am sure most of you know of this trivia but the upcoming Derby makes me post this.

Giuseppe Baresi and Franco Baresi both appeared for trials at Inter when they were very young. That was after their parents expired. Only Giuseppe made it. Franco, then, appeared for trials at Milan and got selected.
Virtually, AC Milan and Inter were homes to Franco and Giuseppe.
