baresi often played as a sweeper - a position we rarely, if ever, see in soccer today. i would bleed tears to see shevchenko and van basten play in the same team with Kaka or Savicevic behind them in the hole as a playmaker.

i agree with beckenbauer instead of mattheus, but i still think cryuff and pele edge out di stefano.

van basten would probably put pele to shame if they both played in the same era. imo, van basten was the most complete player ever. period. created goals, scored goals, headers, bicycle kicks, freekicks, penalties. he was kaka, shevchenko and pirlo rolled into one

But you had Platini and Blokhin and Best over Di Stefano?? Come on..... Di Stefano transformed a mediocre Real Madrid team who had not won a title in 20(?) years to powerhouse in Spain and 5 times consecutive European champions.

He was the 1st ever winner of the European Footballer of the Year and the old timers will agree that he was the BEST player on earth before Pele's era.

Don't think I recalled Marco hitting freekicks on a consistent basis, and he has missed several crucial penalties in his career.

And Pele scored thousands of goals despite being heavily marked, hacked, chopped, tripped, shirt-pulled, elbowed by defenders, who in the modern era, would have been red-carded for those professional fouls.

Van Basten is the best modern era striker, but Pele is the BEST ever! Period.

you're saying van basten wasn't hacked? hell, his ankle was cut off by pietro vierchowod. and van basten did miss some crucial penalties but hey, that's because he's not a machine. i never thought much of pele.

Nope. What I meant was that van Basten played in the modern era, where defenders are more likely to be booked or sent off for such hacking. During Pele's time, defenders were only booked after commiting their 9th or 10th foul on attackers, and Pele often had to endure games which he was constantly hacked, pulled down, kicked at before the offenders were booked for their offences. He was so sicked of all those brutal treatment that he even considered retiring from football when he was in his mid 20s.

Who knows? Had van Basten played during Pele's time he might even had to retire from injuries suffered in his mid 20s. For me, Pele will always be the greatest due to his achievements and goal scoring records having to endure some of the most brutal treatments a player can receive on the pitch.

I have got to say that Maradona was the best ever now maybe that's because I didn't get to see Pele but Soccer Players just like any other athlete have gotten better over time. Pele played in a time when I don't think the quality was as good as when Maradona played. Maradona was a class above everyone and he was great in Italy and Internationally (he did it all). It's a shame what heppened to him. Like I said I never really got to see Pele play so I may be way off here but when I look at some Pele highlights it just looks like he had no competition. Now you may say that he had no competition because he was just that good but I believe it was a combination of him being good and the others not having the quality that todays players have.

It's too hard to make the comparison because they played in 2 different eras but that's just my opinion.

i agree it's almostl ike comparing two styles of fighting - samurai and archery.
