But you cannot classify Gerrard as strictly a DM...he's a complete midfield player, good at his defensive duties and fantastic going forward...he is a born leader and drives his team forward. He is well worth a look in Euro 2004!

i'm not saying that gerrard is 3 times better than gattuso, nor gattuso is 3 times better than gerrard. i only said that gerrard is a liitle better than gattuso because he can pass the ball really good. also WE ALL KNOW THAT GATTUSO IS IMPROVING HIS SKILL!!!!
but to pass the ball is every midfielder's job! and gattuso cant do this as good as gerrard did. i also still remember the assist to sheva vs chievo in verona when sheva headed the ball in. but how many times gattuso made assists this season??? how many times gerrard made assists this season?? don't be blind! u are right about milan would look a lot weaker if gerrard play, but if only he play the role that gattuso have in milan. in other hand, liverpool also would look a lot weaker if gattuso play gerrard role. trust me man!! and nowdays u cant determine a player's position just like that. gerrard is a dm, even pirlo NOW is a dm (correct me if i'm wrong) but look what pirlo did in a match. anyway, u have right to speak out ur mind, i appreciate that. thanks.... ![]() |

Being a Liverpool supporter i should know a bit about how they play. The first thing is Gerrard is NOT a defensive midfielder. He can play there, but that's not what he's best at. They tried giving him the defensive duties when they played him alongside Smicer in the middle, this lasted only a few games as Smicer got injured and Haman returned to the defensive midfield slot. This was in September time i think. Since then Gerrard has played as the attacking central midfielder and is given a free licence to get forward whenever he can.
So in a way you're right Mohammad not to have him in your top 5 of defensive midfielders, because he's not that type of player. If you were to pick a Liverpool player to go in that list it would be Haman. But i think you're wrong about how Milan would be weaker and Liverpool stronger if we swapped the players. Milan would possibly be slightly weaker defensively, but only just. Have you seen Gerrard tackle, seen his work rate, seen his anger, frustration, emotion on the pitch ? If you have then you'd put your blindness to one side and see that these qualities are the exact qualities Gattuso has, so in essence Milan would not be that much weaker defensively. Attacking wise Milan would be stronger because Gerrard is capable of incredible passes and has tremendous vision. Liverpool would be weaker as Gattuso would then become the attacking midfielder and as much as he has improved, he can't do what Gerrard can do at the moment. When Gattuso can make passes like Gerrard did for Owen against Arsenal and Newcastle on a regular basis, then we can compare them. I love both of these players, both have their unique qualities and skills and bring different things to their teams. I'm not going to let my biased views stop me from appreciating the other players abilities. Both are amazing players in their own right. But i don't believe you can compare the two, Gattuso is good for the things he does and Gerrard is good for the things he does. I admire your spirit and emotion about Gattuso Mohammad, but after the season Gerrard has had, i don't think you can knock him like you have. Now if we had both playing for Milan ![]() |

knock him??? i dont hate gerard... ok i dislike, actually hate the english team, no offense... and i think theyre overrated like crap but, if its one player that i admire its gerard... ive seen his passes, i cant forget that goal when he flicked it to owen vs serbia and montenegro or macedonia dunno one of those crap team that england get all excited about when beating them at home by a narrow scoreline (sorry i hate the english)...
but man, u cant even compare gerards work rate with gattuso's ... and alot of it depends on how the season is going, milan are winning games after games (thank god), and he is still pumped up, liverpool are getting humiliated season long, and he is no where near gattuso's passion and excitment rate. sorry but its out of the question... tell me, where and when did the liverpool fans go nuts like the milan fans did when gattuso run the whole pitch tracking down the roma player with the ball after 3 minutes of added time??? did u see how he ran after the ball??? and when he near it he streched to kick it out and the fans went wild and what did he do??? he started to jump waving his arms telling them to get all excited... i never saw gerrard do something like that. when do u see gerard run juggling the ball in the middle of the field where its all packed with opposition get knocked around but still managing to keep the ball in control, can u do that??? ronaldinho cant, he runs with the ball as if its stuck to his head then he keeps knocking it forward with his thingh till a fcuker like materazzi takes him down. the way he lift the team spirit is what i call leadership. ok fine gerard has the captaincy charecteristics in him but gattuso is a born leader, he IMO is the footballing che guevara, passion is his middle name, id rather have one quater of gattuso than 250 gerards with milan. ad i wouldnt trade him for anything |

You're convincing me about Gattuso man. But just one thing, when you say about gattuso telling the fans to get excited and cheer, you're right when you say that gerrard hasnt done that...I wish someone would..but it's hard to get behind a team that doesnt attack. However, he doesnt do it not because he isnt passionate, he's a local liverpool boy after all, but because it isnt in his Character. He's very quiet, shy and researved. In his post match interviews it is always hard to get out of him what he really thinks, i suppose it's an english characteristic. Contrast this to an Italian interview, God I miss watching them now, but the players will almost say anything. Even if they arent strong personalities, usually they're more to the point and frank; an attribute i have myself, but in England I am often perceived as rude, but as a question and get an honest answer.
Where was I, who knows. On the pitch, Gattuso is a leader, without doubt and he is very vocal and can be a hot head at times, no? Gerrard would never be as vocal, but what he does do is he puts it all into his performance, he would lead by example. im not saying that Gattuso doesnt lead by example, he indeed does, but IMO, humble as it is, Gerrard is the better at it, only because Gattuso can inspire people with words, whereas it isnt in Gerrards nature to do so. I was just thinking, Sheva is quite quiet, no Moh? Off the pitch i mean. After scoring we all see the passion each player has whether it be Sheva, Gattuso, Gerrard or Phillip Neville...well maybe not the latter. Jim makes a good point too. Gerrard's work rate is outstanding, quite how it compares to that of Gattuso's, im not sure, but I think Gerrard works as hard as anyone in the world. He took it upon himself this year to make Liverpool win, to make that fourth position. if you forget Henry, maybe if you include him actually, Gerrard has made the biggest single difference to a team this season; along with Henry and Lampard. Gerrards tackle is amazing too. I know it may sound like Im anti-Gattuso, Im not, but i know if he (Gerrard) was in a successful team he would be thought of in such a higher light...I know he is already, but I mean on the world stage, he would be more reveared than an Henry or a Zidane, for example. This also ties in with his personality, he's introvert by nature, therefore isnt as flambouyant or as outgoing as Henry, and I think Henry's personality, the persona he has in public helps him alot, it wins him alot of friends, he is comfortable in from of cameras and talking to people; Im not sure this is totally the case with Gerrard. One quarter of Gattusso man over 250 Gerrards...a bit disengenuous dont you think. A midfield of four Gerrards would be incredible. Enjoy! |

in england u dont have the hard men to amrk like nedved, totti, fiore, or stankovic... where are the playmakers in england???
man utd, chelsea, newcastle, and arsenal all dont have one... so i guess it makes gerards job alot easier... and even if they did, theyre midfielders arent as big as those of the italian league, so thats a point to gattuso as well... gattuso would have a field day in england, no one to tackle relaly, no one to man mark... i think the battle goes to gattuso... the war still is undecided. |

I think we do have hardmen, though it is being phased out almost as a style that is a reminder of the old days of English and Scottish Football. Hamann, Viera, Makelele, Robbie Savage, Nicky butt and Roy Keane are examples of hardmen here. Dennis Wise and Vinny Jones are classics!
There are playmakers too in england...I think. Harry Kewell, Reyes, Pires, Damien Duff...there arent quite as obvious in england because the football is so quick here. In Spain and Italy we can tell that when Ronaldinho or Kaką pick up the ball, we know instantly their job...it's harder to define midfield players in england, I think. Especially English players, or people that have grown up learning their trade here. |

reyes is a supporting striker, duff is a LW, same with pires... kewell is the only close thing to a playmaker... and gerrard cant face him becuase hes on the same team.

I think that Duff's best position is mediapunta and is effective to from the left. Doesnt Nedved though start on the left for Juve? Reyes is also versatile, he can play as a supporting striker, mediapunta or as a winger.

hey guys, i think we should stop talking about this....it started going nowhere. jim was right, both have their unique qualities and skills and bring different things to their teams.
And in terms of milan, gattuso is OUR hero and he is playing for milan, which gerrard didnt. i also wouldnt want to exchange gattuso for gerrard, but if they can play together in milan...it would be very..very wonderful to see... this thread was suppose to be which player(s) milan should buy and why. everyboby made their point clear now...i guess... ciao ![]() |

No no Milano, I think that this discussion about the lack of a true play maker in England is fine! And it is true, in England, the role of an attacking midfielder causes midfielers to be either a really general midfielder or defensive midfield [hardmen] and this contributes to the lack of quality but not talent in England and Scottish football.
Joe Cole is the best example of this, while a superb player, he does not have a set role or a position that seems to be his own. England does accel in producing overly aggresive players [Keane, Butt, Celtic FC] that use sheer physicality rather then skill to make their presence known. If Gattusso went to England he would be the most dominant man on the field, no question, while Vieria's talent as a player is unquestioned [except in my mind] we have yet to see Vieria do well outside of his "defensive" role, something Makelele does much better then he. The best league in the world for the best players is the Serie A. Look at Henry at Juve, regardless of whether a winger or not, he simply was not good enough for Serie A. England is a very entertaining league, but not one of quality, definatley not. If Arsenal, a team that cannot progress past the quarter finals of the CL is an undefeated team, how good can the EPL really be? It also only seems that over-the-hill talents from Italy and Spain seem to go there. Think about it first before replying with me with rage about my outrageous opinions. |

Sam, first of all, what i mean is that we should stop comparing about gerrard and gattuso, not about lack of the play maker in england.
and now to the topic, u should understand that england teams were used to play kick and rush style of football, where players should do more runnings and chasing the long ball in the whole match. nowdays, even though the kick and rush style not so dominant anymore in the english football, it still the basic of their play. it has reduced the role of playmakers and increased the role of wingers. the midfielders are generally divided into attacking and defensive role, but no role like we've seen kaka or rui in milan. nowdays, all the teams that progress in the CL have to be really good for dividing their consentration between CL and their domestic title. look what happened with milan. last season we managed the consentration to win the CL but not the scudetto, but this season we failed the CL but managed the gain the scudetto. and for Porto, who is the new CL winner, will u say that portugal league better than italy or spain too, sam???? the competition in portugal were different with england, italy, spain, even france. how many teams from portugal did u well known?? (sorry for all the portugalese) with the quality in a team like porto, is not difficult to maintained their concentration in the CL (they also trashed deportivo, viva porto!!!) and also maintained their concentration in the domestic league, which we all know that the champions from the portugal's league will only came between porto, benfica and sporting lisbon, just like the dutch (the great three: ajax, psv, and feyenoord) so my point is that we sould see each competition differently, because they all have different attraction, and that is why i love soccer so much!!!
