Barcelona must learn to win without Ronaldinho - Txiki
tribalfooball.com - October 26, 2006

Barcelona must learn to win without Ronaldinho, admitted sports director Txiki Begiristain last night.

"Ronaldinho has had difficult moments throughout the last three years. Sometimes he has been better and other times worse," said Begiristain.

"In the first season we signed him we said that it would be good not to depend on a single player. We must think like this. The rest of the team can cover the poor form of Ronaldinho."

On the defeats to Real Madrid and Chelsea, Begiristain added: "Look, we've lost at two difficult grounds. That's all. It's history. The squad continues to believe they're the best in Europe."

Apparently, Nike have doubled their investment in Barca to help the club keep Ronaldinho.

From the Gazetta

Here is half of the story.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...388101&cc=5901

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Nike Inc. said Friday it has extended its sponsorship of the Barcelona soccer team another five years in a deal worth about $189 million.

The agreement with Futbol Club Barcelona includes a possible five-year renewal, which would further extend the relationship through 2018. Details were not disclosed.

The Beaverton-based athletic shoe and clothing giant has sponsored the Spanish soccer team -- nicknamed "Barca" -- since 1998. The team holds the UEFA Champions League title and has an estimated 70 million supporters worldwide.

One of the club's star players is two-time FIFA Player of the Year Ronaldinho, who is in his fourth season with the club.

"FC Barcelona is one of the game's best football clubs and one of the most exciting teams to watch," said Nike President and CEO Mark Parker.

FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta said the deal recognized both "our performance on the field and our social and community commitments."

Rijkaard blocks ‘Dinho

Frank Rijkaard believes Ronaldinho will not be leaving Barcelona, despite Milan’s attempts to sign him. “I am not worried by the Rossoneri’s interest,” stated the Coach.

The Brazilian was associated with a switch to the San Siro last summer and recent rumours suggested that they may make a firm offer at the end of this season, seeing as the player has not yet extended his Barca contract.

“I know champions and their priorities – if they feel at ease in a certain environment it is very difficult that they will change,” said Rijkaard.

“The relationship between Ronaldinho and the club – not to mention between the player and the city – is perfect, therefore I do not see any problems.

“Of course you can never be sure in football, but at the time being Milan’s interest does not worry me at all.”

The Rossoneri, however, have not given up on the dream of signing Ronaldinho and still believe that a transfer is possible.

This is mainly due to the excellent relationship between the Via Turati club and Roberto Assis – the player’s brother and agent, as well as the agent of summer signing Ricardo Oliveira.

Many believe that the £14m paid for the 26-year-old Brazilian hitman, who spent much of last season on loan at San Paolo while he recovered from November’s knee ligament injury, was to be considered a sort of down payment guaranteeing the arrival of Ronaldinho in the near future.

However, technical sponsors are now also involved after the Blaugrana received an additional £10m from Nike, as the American company hopes this will help to prevent Ronaldinho from signing for an Adidas team such as Milan.

I think the title of the article is very misleading ... once you read it, it sounds more like "R. hopes/thinks Dinho won't leave" rather than "R. blocks Dinho move".
And the more Barca fans don't wanna see him in the 1st 11 of Barca, the more likely he would be to decide that his love for Barca - club and city - is nearing it's end.

IMO, the most difficult thing preventing Ronaldinho from coming to Milan, apart from the overall cost (which Berlu seems willing to find) is the Adidas vs Nike thing...Kaka is an adidas player, and while Pirlo may wear Nike boots, I dont think he aspires to/wants/needs the high profile that Dinho enjoys with the US boot maker.

Remember, Pirlo comes from a very wealthy family.

So, Nike may decide to cut the $s Dinho receives from endorsements, and recall they have him with signature boots, etc...this for me is the big drawback...though I am sure Adidas would love to have him over for a cup o tea and some pastry...
