Adriano Galliani reveals why Milan decided to drop David Suazo and Thierry Henry, but confirms they’re seeking a new forward at Barcelona.

It has been an eventful week for the Rossoneri Vice-President. He struck a £10m deal with Cagliari for Suazo only to discover he had already signed for Inter and on Saturday officially relinquished their hold on the Honduran.

“I spoke with President Silvio Berlusconi and he completely agreed with our decision not to get into a bidding war. There was the real risk of a mess emerging. We all liked Suazo, but life goes on,” noted Galliani.

“I spoke to Massimo Moratti many times recently and right from the start I was pleased to see the Nerazzurri did not think we acted unfairly. Milan took the player’s wishes into account and released him without any nasty afters.

“There is too much talk in Italian football and we didn’t need another weight. As a former Lega Calcio President, I can say that a sense of responsibility played a huge part in my decision on Suazo. Can you imagine an appeal to FIFA with the Scudetto winners fighting against the European champions? No, thanks. Better to retire and look ahead.”

The Rossoneri are certainly doing that, with talk – now confirmed by Galliani – that they will pool all their resources into snatching either Eto’o or Ronaldinho from Barcelona.

“I tell the fans what I already reminded Berlusconi of. In 1986 we lost Gianluca Vialli because he refused the transfer. We didn’t get down in the dumps, instead going to sign Marco van Basten. Perhaps we would have won more with Vialli, but with Marco…

“At the moment Eto’o is not on the market and he says he wants to stay at Barcelona. Eto’o is at the top of our list and I have never hidden that.”

Galliani has often protested about the different tax breaks that football clubs receive in Italy and around Europe, so it seems once again this could prove decisive – as it already has this summer.

“The problem is the difference in the financial regime in Spain. We experienced the same problem with Henry,” revealed the transfer guru.

“We were very close to the Frenchman and Leonardo had worked hard on convincing him. We would not have had problems handing over £16m to Arsenal, but the £6.7m per season net wages are not sustainable for us. To be clear, Barcelona’s contract with Henry costs them less than £10m gross, but for us the same wages would cost £13.5m.

“Unfortunately, this is the truth now. We have to get used to it. Years back Ajax, Red Star Belgrade and Steaua Bucharest could challenge for the Champions League. Now they have vanished because they can’t sustain certain costs.

“It’ll get worse, as a new Government plan will take away resources from the big clubs to give to the smaller sides. We’ll get a more balanced Serie A, but the decline in Europe could follow.”

Henry, Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho, Kaka ..... they all costed as much or less than what Chelsea is offering for this underaged kid.

have Roma officially signed Barusso? I think Milan should just sign him. We've had the strongest links with the guy and it's obvious he'd be very keen to prove himself and i know there's this sudden doubt over his ability after his injury, but for such a small transfer fee i don't think it's that big a risk.

He and Ze Roberto (coming off the back of a great season in Brazil) would be fine additions to our central midfield. Get on it Galliani!

Milan left Suazo, looool!!!?

I really dont want to see PAto in Chelsky as this man-boy is really a masterpiece of a player. Maybe Leonardo can still snatch him, or we cant pay for him either? Maybe winning CL and having a lot of money like Berlusconi has isnt enough...

Mate, in this case i disagree with you.
He may become the greatest one of all time, but he's 17 Marko....who , apart from Abramovitch, will pay ~25m euro for a 17 years old ?

just wonder, how Inter would have acted if they found themselevs in this situation, somehow I find it dif to imagine Mancini and Moratti being gracious "losers" - only time will tell if anything was lost here at all - and move away without creating a media-shattering moaning noise about it

agree ... I also want Milan to secure Pato now and groom him for the future but let's be real here - we can't aford to put away this type of money in a bank acount, in a questionable institution, only because it might be useful in 5-6 years from now.
Milan needs this money for NOW, we can't just cut such a big chunk out of the club's budget for future luxuries.

We had reportedly offered 10-12 mil for him around the winter transfer period but 25mil and maybe even more, that's crazy talk IMO and a move only Chelski could come up with - even Real probably won't do it give their not so successful, at least for now, big money transfers for high profile youngsters like Gago, Higuain, and Marcelo barely half a year ago ... we could add to that Robinho too, I guess.

Just wondering though - the Internacional president reprotedly said, I think, that Pato was available for no less than his buy out clause of 15-16 mil euros, if I am not mistaken ... why are Chelski going 10 mil above that to sign him then?

Roma rage over Inter-Chivu talks Sunday 24 June, 2007

After the David Suazo chaos, Inter have again been accused of an illegal approach, this time to Roma’s Cristian Chivu.

It is well known that the Nerazzurri are interested in the defender, but Barcelona are close to a deal – according to Spanish newspaper ‘Marca’ with the official announcement coming on Monday – and a new saga could develop.


‘Marca’ insist that the Romanian will move to the Nou Camp in exchange for £8m plus Ludovic Giuly.


Today ‘Il Romanista’ alleges that Coach Roberto Mancini telephoned Chivu personally to convince him to choose Inter instead.


This infuriated the Giallorossi, who have already felt the burn of these unorthodox transfer techniques this season.


“Roma will never go behind another club’s back,” stated general manager Rosella Sensi.


“Roma have chosen a professional approach and will stick with it right to the end. Inter have chosen another and we respect their decision.”


It is claimed that if Chivu does turn down the move to Barcelona in order to join Inter, then Sensi will report them to the FIGC and FIFA for an illegal approach.


There was a hint of this problem earlier this weekend, when transfer guru Ernesto Bronzetti revealed the background to the negotiations with Barcelona.


“Roma thanked Barcelona for not going directly to the player first,” he told ‘Radio Radio.’


It would be the second time the Nerazzurri have been involved in controversy for contacting players under contract this summer.


Cagliari already revealed that Roma had asked after Suazo back in February, but had kept their promise to the club not to contact him directly until the campaign had concluded.


“Roma were the side who requested Suazo in February and I asked them not to contact the player, as I was afraid it would distract him,” revealed Cellino on ‘Radio Radio.’


“They waited until the end of the season and acted in a very professional manner, but Suazo already had a deal with Inter. Unfortunately, the respect Roma showed me could well have penalised them.”


That same technique created chaos after Milan agreed a £10m transfer with Cagliari for the player, only for them to back out several days later upon realising he had already signed for their San Siro rivals.


Inter are also in the headlines after an investigation was launched into their financial practices, alleging the club was not stable enough to qualify for the 2005-06 season.


Today financial newspaper ‘Il Sole 24 Ore’ claims that the Nerazzurri have the worst economic problems in Serie A, running at a loss of £122m this year.


The debt is covered by an increase in capital performed by oil baron Massimo Moratti and the shareholders.


Juventus ran at a loss of £24m following their demotion to Serie B and the consequent loss of several sponsorship contracts.


Of the ‘big’ clubs only Milan made a profit at £1.6m thanks to the £30m sale of Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea.


In Serie A the healthiest finances belonged to Udinese, who ended up with a profit of £4.4m.

Roughly translated it says, according to Capello it is a mission impossible to snatch Kaka away from Milan, especially from Berlusconi.
Berlu now considers Kaka THE man in Milan, where once that was Maldini.
Therefore he will never let him go now.
It also says something about the transfer of Ronaldo.

Fully agree... Pato simply KICKS ASS, man, mark my words... and he's not just an 'investment' for the future, he's ready to break really big NOW.
