I agree that CL eligibility would be a problem for getting most "stars" and "star-wannabes" but there will still be a number of good, cquality players available ... it's a dif question whether we'd go for them, though.

I think he is more of a Rui, Kaka, Gourcuff type of player and not exactly suitable for a holding mid.
But I think he signed for Samp, didn't he?

I disagree Zlatanov, i think most of the players we would like will have moved on. They won't be there waiting for us.

There are always players available if you know where to find them and you have the funds, be it South American players or players from clubs not competing in Europe. For instance, if Milan were looking for a holding midfielder in January, it might be possible to splash enough cash at Boca Juniors to get Fernando Gago, who is absolutely brilliant (he's constantly compared to Redondo, who was his hero growing up).

So why not get Gago now ? We have the money, why wait and risk losing him to another club ? We obviously don't have enough time to do things properly now, but we've had enough time after the CL qualifier to wrap up several deals.

Plus with Gago so young, it's not like he'd be straight into the first team is it. If you want real improvements you need to improve on what you have already, we'll be lucky if these kinds of players haven't moved on.

Boca isn't looking to move him right now. But the situation might change. Besides, I don't even know if Milan is interested in him at the moment (aside from the way all clubs are interested). I'm just using him as a ready example that there are players out there. I don't see any reason to panic. Milan needs to make sure they get the right players and the right deals. It's not as though the current squad isn't good enough to get through the CL group stage and move somewhere near the top of the league standings.

I was just thinking that another guy who might be more readily available in January could be Gallas. If Chelsea keeps him on the reserves and the situation doesn't change, they might be more willing to move him in January just to get something out of him rather than nothing. You never know.

I was well aware you were using Gago as an example Rick and maybe South American players are a bad example to use as their players are more likely to move in the January period after their season has finished.

But again it comes down to risk. Why wait ? The right players are there now and say we do lose out on them, who do we go for then ? It'll be players who are ok, but not our top targets. I'm not saying this is always the case but i don't see why we need to delay things. Everyone can see our weaknesses, so why not act on them now.

Gago is staying in Argentina until june 2007 and once that time comes, you can be sure he will either be gone to Corinthians (if MSI is still there) or Real Madrid.

Rick was only using him as an example. Plus even if milan wanted to go after Gago, if he's available we have just as much chance of getting him as anyone else. Unless of course he has a particular club he wants to play for.
