This is a funny situation. Have we won the Champions League, Stam would be "one of the best defenders of the world"... Now is not good enough...
In my opinion Stam is still a player of the highest qualtity - please also remember he has had a lot of injuries this year + this is his first season in Milan, which always is difficult...

Agree with Hitman. IMO last season with Cafu-Nesta-Maldini-Kaladze we had a perfect defensive system and with Stam, Maldini moved to the left and he took time to settle in our system. Besides that Stam had injuries especially in the beginning, IMO he's still one of the best, however his place is on the bench a reserve of Nesta and Maldini because at 36 Maldini is a lot better as a CB than on the left.

Don't forget that Stam made some superb games likes vs Barcelona, Man U, Inter.

Stam hasn't been at his best in overall but he remains one of the best central defenders in the world . He was a little bit inconsistent and that was a major problem . I don't see Maldini under-performing at left-back on the contrary he has been excellent but the point is he couldn't be used at left-back for the whole season at 37 that is a huge burden especially that he has to run along the full-length of the pitch up and down many times during the match . It is harsh to blame Stam only for his mistakes as Nesta who is regarded as the world's best central defender also commited mistakes . Of course he shouldn't be sold .

Whatever we do, IMO we need to reinforce our aging backline...

Having watched several Madrid games this term, I feel that Samuel would be a good aquisition, as he is usually faultless in the air....not many headers score vs Madrid, they are usually shots that the midfield/defense fail to close down, and in these cases, Walter is not really to blame..

Truthfully, the market for good centre backs is not exactly overflowing with talent now, but hopefully, we can make a good aquisition, as one thing is for certain...

We wont have another winning season with the backline as is....

I said from the day Milan signed Stam; "I hope Ancelotti isn't stupid enough to break up the Nesta-Maldini partnership"...
well he was

let's hope he returns to the recipe for defensive stability, which worked so well the first two seasons Nesta was here.

that's just my opinion...
(not blaming anything on Stam in particular there... but why on earth brake up the winning formula? thanks Carletto )

I Must say that our defense looked a lot better with Maldini and Kala instead of Stam and Maldini.

IMO, Maldini and Nesta had a better chemistry, and as such, produced better results, the difference with Stam is that though he is better in the air, he isnt positionally sound, allowing way too much space for forwards in the box...this is the opposite for Maldini, who, though positionally sound, tends not to win important headers, eventhough closely marking his opponent.

This has been the dilemma facing Carlo...and has yet to be resolved...
