Who I would recommend (including some whose names I mention every year ). Before posting, I must admit I haven't read most of the above posts.

Marco Zoro (Messina). A real tough tackling right back who looks really good in Sicily, and could be a worthwhile replacement for Cafu. I don't rate Oddo too highly before anyone asks.

Juan (Bayer Leverkusen). I always liked his ball playing ability, and feel he could be an exceptionally useful central defender for us. In Brazil I heard they always used to see him as superior to Lucio, who always gets mentioned in "best defender" disputes. I like him quite a bit.

Daniele Bonera (Parma). The only one of the new generation of Italian defenders who impresses me at all. The rest look overhyped and a pale shadow of what went before. Plus, he wouldn't be cuptied for the Champions League, assuming of course we make it past the group stage. Something he shares with Zoro of course.

Aside from these, whom I believe to be obtainable, I'm open to suggestions.

It seems Sagnol to leave Bayern, he hope's to replace Cafu. It would be a great sign, Sagnol doing very well in Munich!

But lets stop dreaming now

Today we are being linked with Reveilliere from Lyon. I do not know how good he is but in fantasy football he always gets me points from assists and goals!

I am starting to believe more and more that Ballack will not be coming to Milan. Im convinced that Seedorf on form is much more useful to our system than Ballack. Also, we are not being linked with him anymore. I do not know if this is going to be a surprise move by Braida, but i really dont see any "NEED" in getting Ballack at all. Our midfield to me is perfect, and every replacement is even more perfect. Seedorf + Jankulovski for left midfield. Vogel + Pirlo for "pirlo's role", Gattuso + Ambro for right of midfield, and Kaka + Rui for tetraquartista. I really think there is no other midfield in the world with our depth.

Reveilliere is a class player. I've watched Lyon many times and he's always put in an impressive performance. He can beat players, is quite pacy and can run up and down all game, an ideal replacement for Cafu. Oh and he can defend and tackle, which are the important bits i guess for a defender

If we could find someone as good as Reveilliere, Sagnol or Oddo for the left-back position aswell, we'd be well set.

If i could pick and choose, i'd take Reveilliere, Alex, Chivu and Sorin. One player for each position. Let Stam go home, Simic can leave, Billy can retire with grace and Kaladze can either stay and fight or we can get a younger player to replace him.

I can't claim to have watched Lyon too often, but I'm willing to trust Jim's opinion on this. But wasn't he rejected by Valencia a couple of years back?

I don't actually rate Oddo too highly as a potential signing. He will be 30 by next July, at which point we are most likely to sign him. He isn't a definite Italy starter, with the distinctly average Christian Zaccardo ahead of him in the queue. Not, in my opinion, the kind of player we need. Too old to develop into a top class full back.

As for prifess suggestions, the Belgian league is simply sh!t. Kompany has been ridiculously overhyped IMO, as he has played consistently moderately in an Anderlecht side which has lost ten Champions League games in a row. I think his hyping is the result of a Belgian sports media desperate at the nation's footballing fortunes and looking to him as a saviour. I haven't seen anything about him which makes him worth the hype. As for the other guy you suggest, I haven't seen him play but I'm willing to guess he can't be too good if he's playing in belgium.

i will debate further options once they are suggested. I really love shooting down people's favourite players

I think you're right Rab, Reveilliere did go to Valencia for a bit but failed. However, i think that was a few years ago when he was still reasonably young (he's only 26 now). So i guess that might raise the question of adapting to Serie A life, no one knows that for sure, but of the times he plays in the Champion's League, he seems to do quite well. He certainly kept Roberto Carlos in his pocket and gave him some problems when Lyon stuffed Madrid a few weeks ago

He was only loaned to Valencia and its important to consider that Valencia arent in the CL, while Lyon are one of the better teams in the competition.
