In EPL IMO the best midfield is Lampard now. 20 goal in all competation n the highest scorer midfield in EPL history..... Unluckly chelsea lose to Liverpool tonight n he din not score..

Gerard is still lot more behind Lampard his season.Gerard has been the best last season but not this season...

You're right Savage Mau that Lampard is the highest scoring premiership midfielder, but in all competitions i don't think Gerrard is too far behind him. I think some of Gerrard's performances have equalled Lampards easily enough. But lets look at it from another view, what if Lampard were at Liverpool and Gerrard at Chelsea, would Lampard still be as good ? I'm not so sure he would be. They're very even every season.

As a side note i don't see why Chelsea were unlucky, they were poor for 60 odd minutes due to an arrogant team selection, poor play and a good performance from Liverpool. After they brought all their wingers on they got back into the match and the inevitable siege occured. Liverpool deserved to go through, Chelsea didn't.

If you seriously think he's been missing for Liverpool this season then you are clearly mistaken and are talking complete and utter nonsense. I wonder how many games you have seen to think that and i wonder if you watch them objectively or are just there to criticise.

If one of our midfielders scored nearly 20 goals in a season and plays 50 odd games ... and in the majority of those games has been full of running, tackling, high energy and good vision ... i'd be extremely ecstatic. We should be so lucky.

I have seen Gerrard play many times this season but I feel he has not been able to influence the midfield as well as he did last year.

I think Gerrard is a good player but I don't think he is a great player.

But your view of him being totally overrated, has now dropped to him being just not as influential. But then you'll know, as you state you have seen him play alot this season, that he has played alot of games on the right of midfield with Alonso and Sissoko in the centre. I believe it's alot harder to influence a game from wide out than it is in the middle, wouldn't you agree ?

But anyway, maybe you are right, maybe he is over-rated and maybe i am wrong. Who knows. It's all about opinions and different viewpoints.

I still remember Gerrard's form for England in 2001...

He was brilliant then...I always feel Benitez is a little hesitant to use Gerrard in his correct position. The reason I said he was overrated was that all and sundry believe (Juve, Chelsea that if he was in their team he would bring so much to the midfield.

He would undoubtedly add value but how much is up for debate.

I don't think it is harder to influence from out wide than it is in the middle.

Figo, C. Ronaldo, Marc Overmars, beckham...more than influential.

Every player will have an off season every now and then. Besides, it might not be an off-season, but compared to another one from the past, that player might be playing on a lower level for on reason or another.
What I am trying to say is that if you compare Gerrard of this year and the Gerrard of last year then yes, he has had a little lower-then usual season. That doesn't mean however that he is overrated. So you are telling me that Pirlo is overrated just because he has had an unusual off-season? Same goes for Gerrard. He is a world class player. It is as simple as that. If Milan announced that he will be signed I will be ecstatic because he is one of the best out there.

Anyway, for the team of next year? I am hoping for one of Gallas and Barzagli, Oddo and Diarra. It is true that Diarra will cost but he will be of great great use. This year he has been arguably the best central/holding midfielder in Europe. Just imagine what our line up would look like week in week out with Pirlo, Seedorf, Gattuso and Diarra. So balanced and so strong both in the defence and in attack. I have watched Diarra play a lot of times this year and besides his strength and ability to mark and tackle, he is also a great passer of the ball. He can also play in any of our midfield positions(that is Pirlo's, Seedorf's and Gattuso's). Add to the mix Ambro or Vogel(i would expect one of the two to leave if Diarra comes), and you have the most balanced and scariest midfield line in the world. Now, I know that he will not come for less then 25mil Euros, but it is definetly worth it. He is only in his mid twenties, and if we are to spend some money this summer, then this guy is a real bargain. Just for fun, if I had to choose between Gerrard and Diarra....Diarra would be my choice.

I know that there have been buch of threads like this one, but I'll still put wish for next year.

Pirlo; Diarra; Gattuso; Seedorf; Vogel; Kaka; Rui Costa

Sheva; Gilardino; Inzaghi; Amoroso(or maybe recall a young player like Pozzi?)

I think that it is very possible to see this squad next year. Oddo wouldn't cost more then 4/4.5, while Gallas should be around the same price around 5/6mil. Diarra will cost about 25(I think), but we can definetly take that down or even offer someone in exchange. Maybe Vogel?

Does anyone know how much exactly we spent last summer? (in euros)

i have to admit... ill be more than happy if we got oddo, gallas and diarra
