it looks like that Galliani and Mijatovic had struck a deal for emerson to come to Milan - 2 mil for a year loan + 5 mil for the buy-out clause, I believe - but Calderon interfered and broke off a done deal by setting emrson;s price at 11 mil and refusing to let him go out on loan.

This was in gazzetta, quoting emerson's words on the matter (from what things seem to be on the first page) and they even wrote an apology totheir readers for saying that emerson to Milan was a done deal 2 days ago, although they maintain that what they reported was indeed true.

Every man has a pride, even Calderon.
Being scared of Milan beating them in CL isn't the reason why Calderon won't let go Emerson for cheap. Chances are big that he won't even have to play vs Milan in CL.
Milan made him look like a fool in front of Real fans. He promised them Kaka and Milan didn't let him go.
Milan made him look like a fool with Ronaldo - twice. The first time when he sold him for peanuts and the second time when Milan proved that Ronnie isn't finished like Calderon and co. thought.

Calderon paid 20m euro for Canna and Emerson. It was never announced how much of these money went for Canna and how much for Emerson, but i guess at least 12m were for Emerson. He still has 1 rate to pay to Juve.
If he lets him go on loan for 2m and then Milan doesn't wanna buy him after 1 year, what is Calderon getting ? He still owes 4m to Juve for Emerson, he'll get 2m from Milan and he'll even have to add 2 more million from his pocket to pay Juve for a player who's not even playing for Real anymore.

He'll look like the ultimate fool. Stubborn and proud rich man like him won't allow that to happen. If it's needed he'll keep Emo on the bench and pay his wages rather then give him to Milan on one year loan.
If it was any other team i believe he wouldn't have blocked the loan deal and he would have given the green light. But it's Milan. He won't let Milan make a fool out of him for the third time.

Or at least i think he won't do such a thing.

what you say does make sense and gazzetta also thow in some other possible reasons for this here:
http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Calcio.../emerson.shtml

but if Calderon had pride, I would think he wouldn't go back on a done deal and make his right hand, Mijatovic, look like a muppet on strings.
Anyways, I think they are just buying time, both sides that is, and doing so in their own ways.

given the circumstances around Emerson - not any dif than those surrounding Ronaldo, I think even a man with a fake pride like Calderon's would acknowledge that Milan is their best bet, not to say the only one, of getting rid of a player not wanted by management, coach, and fans at Real M.

And I am sure even a manager as shrude as Calderon would acknowledge that it would be better to get 2 mils for sure for a 31-32 yo player, and save another 4.5 mil from paying his salary and keeping him on the bench or even out of the team (like Cassano), than get nothing at all for a player they will hardly use at all ... and the possibility of Milan agreeing to pay the extra 5 mil of the buy-out clause would be like a welcome bonus.

And let's not forget what Real tried to do in Ronaldo's case - Milan offered them 16 mil, they didn't wanna go below 24/25 mil ... in 4-5 months, they were selling Ronaldo for 7.5 mil. Given Emerson's situation in Real, the odds are overwhlemingly on that Real would have to swallow another bitter pill if they insist on trying to be smarter than they are as the next step in Emerson's future - if they fail to offload him this summer - would be a 32 yo unwanted Emerson, with questions surrounding his fitness, asking for his contract being annulled and Real agreeing to it only to save themselves the 4.5 mil/season from his salary ... money they pay to a player no one at Real wants or wants to use.

So, next time Mr. calderon wants to play proud, he might wanna think a little ahead in the game and finally realize that if you want to get some good return from what you've spent on a player, you shouldn't make him look like garbage, ostracize him and let potential buyers know that he is an unwanted man in your team i.e. make his market value go down faster than a Calderon election promise ... 'cause once that's done, no pride would help you look like a shrewd businessman afterwards, and that's what Calderon's main objective is - to look like a good manager because that's the only way for him to stay a Real M president ... doubt pride has anything to do with it (or more precisely it's a bit too late to play proud) as if it did, then Calderon wouldn't have said and done about 95% of what he has said and done

But Calderon is one of the stupidest men alive, so he will just keep doing such things. It is really despite his poor management that RM achieved anything at all last season. You know the definition of an idiot savant? A very, very wise man who gives everyone the impression of being really, really stupid. Calderon is a savant idiot.
That he actually won a contested election (albeit as the head of a sports franchise), gives hope to us all that we might achieve something we are not qualified for, too.

Can you tell that I think he's an idiot?

@Tony--the pride issue would be relevant if Emo was actually liked by the Real madrid fans. Pride is probably one of the reasons why Laporta doesnt want to sell R10 to us this year, but Emo? The Real fans hate him, they boo him at their home ground, they never wanted him in the first place and I dont think they would mind if he left, even for free....So if we rule out pride, then I guess for Calderon, we're only left with stupidity---stupidity over making unrealistic campaign promises (Perez actually had Figo signed before he began his campaign pledge), stupidity over trying to tap up the best player in the world from the best team in Europe (you cant argue with that--at least for this year ), stupidity over setting a price tag for Ronaldo, and now stupidity over keeping Emerson and paying his wages.....At this rate, I dont think he'll last long as Real president. After all, when they had a stable president---Lorenzo Sanz, they were changing coaches all the time, now they neither have a stable coach, nor a stable president/dynasty...

to be honest i can understand calderon. i don't like him at all but he has a point. emerson might not be the most popular player around but he is a champion and has proved how important he is at roma, juve and even in madrid where they didn't like him. in the last third of the season he played great for them (according to their fans).

so why should he ship him out for peanuts? he is not dealing with samp or some minor club but the champions of europe who may very well be a direct competitor for real in this years cl.

if galliani says it is emerson or none other because carlo only wants this player then we should spend some money. we all know how stubborn carlo is and when he dislikes a player he does not use him. get emerson here asap!

Unfortunately the poll didn't exactly have a option I liked so I couldn't vote. He is not ideal for us, but he is useful and most importantly wanted by Ancelotti. a manager should get players he want. emerson is well adjusted to Serie A and would help us quite a bit for the scudetto race and give players like Gattuso a rest.

Emerson: Please release me!
Saturday 18 August, 2007
After Real Madrid raised his price-tag to £8m, Emerson threatened the club if they don’t release him to join Milan.

The former Roma and Juventus midfielder was all ready to return to Serie A on loan when Real suddenly changed their minds, demanding a permanent move.

“I asked to be left behind when Real went to play the Carranza trophy. I knew Milan were about to come to Madrid for talks, so I preferred to stay here,” he confessed in the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport.’

“I thought everything was sorted out, but on Wednesday my agent called to say there were problems. He told me to stay calm and be patient, so I took his word for it. As I wait, I am back training with my teammates.”

Yet he is not a part of Coach Bernd Schuster’s plans and does not want to stay at the club that fired Fabio Capello.

“I have another two years on my contract with Real, but if I have the choice then I certainly want to leave. I have spoken of Milan many times, they are my objective.”

With the Rossoneri declaring this weekend they will not accept the new terms of this deal, ‘Puma’ is taking matters into his own hands.

“If Real do not lower their economic demands, they must be prepared to accept the responsibility and consequences of keeping me here.”

San Siro beckons either way, as Inter are also showing an interest in Emerson to reinforce their midfield.

“I know that Roberto Mancini spoke highly of me. I was told of this and obviously it is flattering, but I have not spoken to anyone.”

seems he is fighting real with their own weapons. madrid have a history of demanding such things as strike from players so they can get them. i think that we will get emerson before august 31st.

Emerson is a scum, he did the same to Roma and I wouldn't have been surprised if he said something similar to Juventus. Although I can understand him more in this case than the Roma one.

Looks like he is on his way to Milan, a very good buy
Emerson is just hours away from leaving Real Madrid for Milan after Rossoneri chief Adriano Galliani headed out to Spain for his services.

The Vice-President boarded a plane for the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening after further negotiations over the Brazilian’s future took place this lunchtime.

FIFA agent Ernesto Bronzetti is understood to have revived a transfer which looked to have collapsed just a week ago after Madrid unexpectedly increased their asking price.

However, Bronzetti has convinced Real chief Ramon Calderon to lower his £8m valuation of the midfielder which has re-ignited the move.

Galliani will now hold talks with sporting director Predrag Mijatovic to draw up all the relevant papers and the player is set to imminently become a Milanista.

Whispers in the peninsula this evening claim that the European champions will net the former Roma and Juventus Scudetto winner for just under £4m.

Emerson, who made his mark in the European game with Bayer Leverkusen, was keen for a move after his transfer from Calciopoli hit Juve a year ago didn’t quite go to plan.

However, Fabio Capello – sacked by Real for Bernd Schuster earlier this summer – is convinced ‘Il Puma’ will get back to his former brilliant ways.

“I’m convinced that Milan have got themselves a great buy,” noted the out of work tactician after rumours of the deal emerged.

“After a season of highs and lows, Emerson will have a great desire to prove himself again and he will be a very important part of the Rossoneri machine. My compliments go to Milan.”

This sucks man, we always get old player. Now I feel sorry for Gourcuff becauce he will play less. I know Emerson is a DM but still I cant see Gorki gettin much playing time this season. Ancelotti prefers old players.

It's now official Emerson has joined Milan for around 5 million euros & Galliani is on his way to Madrid to sign the contract and bring with him the player to Milanello.

Yay sign Brazillian and keep the fans happy. Dont think we need him, but if it helps to challenge on all fronts>> Great.

Personally, Id like to see reinforcements in defence.

I'd be pretty pleased with Emerson, very good backup for Rino, Ambro and to lesser degree Pirlo. His physical game is exactly what we needed in midfield (I remember complaining about that I think after the 1st leg Man U match last season).

I also doubt this will affect Gourcuff much, I don't think he would ever figure in the same role as what we've got Emerson for.
