Credit is given when its due, but im sorry, Rooney is not like Cassano.

Aldough I believe that , right now, Rooney is better than Cassano, I absolutly agree on the fact English press and fans intend to put themselves where they simply dont belong. Terry - THE BEST defender in the world, Premiership the best league, Gerrard the best CM, and so on......nothing of this is true.
Rooney is not close to Sheva, Henry, Eto'o, Pipo, and so on... Nesta and Cannavaro are the best CB in the world, and while Gerrard is one of the best, its clear that Kaka' and Ronaldinho are in front of him. England was self proclamed 2nd favorite for the WC??!! And I never realised WHY?? Brazil, Agrentina, Spain, Italy are all stronger teams. Still, they believe Beckham will win it for them. Never mind it, England will loose as always. And serie a is still the strongest league in the world. Sheva made his decision and now he can play against strong defences like Middlesbrough, Charlton, West Bromwich and so on......

some people in here are so anti-England it's bordering on the racial limit to be honest and quite frankly it makes them look completely idiotic and ignorant.

You compare Rooney's season to Cassano's and you tell me honestly which had the better ? No one in their right mind can say Cassano has been great for over a year now and yet Rooney has been doing all the same things Cassano did in his peak and yet he gets no credit from some people and you say i (because i'm english) have a problem ? What a joke.

As for Gerrard, i think his last season has proved he is one of the best central midfielders in the world. He does everything that a good central midfielder should do and more, yet again because he's English he gets no credit from certain bigoted people here.

I don't think the Premiership is the best league in the world, not in terms of technique that's for sure and i also don't buy into the English media hype. I do however back players who i've seen week in week out and deserve praise at the end of a long season.

You need to think about what you're saying here, who is comparing rooney to these strikers ? No one. In this argument it's Rooney v Cassano. Why also compare two completely different types of striker ? Would you compare Cassano with Inzaghi ? No, i bet you probably wouldn't. So why compare Rooney who is a second striker who likes to come deep to the cream of out and out strikers ? That Baffles me.

Again you are comparing two sets of players. Would you compare Gattuso to Kaka and Ronaldinho ? No, of course not. For me Gerrard is one of the best central midfielders in the world, not one of the best attacking midfielders. There is surely a big difference there in terms of what they offer to the team. You shouldn't compare these two sets of players.

Self Proclaimed ? I don't remember anyone from the England camp saying anything about being 2nd favourites to win. They may have said they can win the cup, but then pretty much every team says that when they are there and if you attack England about that then you should attack every other team who do the same. Their is a difference between the media and the team and although sometimes hard to distinguish, you need to be clear about which one you should attack first.

As I said, right now Rooney is better than Cassano. Please dont think im insulting England without reason, and certanly not to offend certain nation. That was never my intention. So i apologise if I sounded that way. But its clear England's behaviour like the are the kings of the universe makes people dislike tham. Especially constant self-favorising in the world cups.

although i agree with alot of what you said, but at this stage, and even when cassano is on form i think rooney is still a better player overall, but we wont buy him cause we wont buy him + hes very ugly! ...

mrki, read what zlatanov just said... for the record, in 323 minutes so far klose has scored 4 goals and set up 2 goals, torres has played 202 mins and scored 3 and set up none, tevez has scored 1 and assisted 1 in 168 mins of play, sheva on the other hand scored 2 (1 penalty) and set up one in 262 mins of action... meaning torres and tevez arent much better than klose and not even the guy we are replacing looks better than klose right now, and besides, klose is very very very consistent, i dont tihnk ive ever watched a game for him where he looked awful, and if i recall correctly he was 2nd place in the scoring charts in the last world cup... not bad

I think self-proclaimed is the right word. Before the wc started, England were 2nd favourites to win it in terms of odds in betting sites!!!!! (Brazil i think had 3.0 and england 4.0, then came argentina with a 7.5) The best player award odds was in this order: Beckham, Ronaldinho, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Kaka, Riquelme, Terry, Messi, Ronaldo and i forgot how it goes on. Just look at the number of english players, and notice that Terry is more likely to be player of the tournament thaN ronaldo and messi.. Italian players were not even mentioned in the odds for best player!

I dont mean to offend you English people, but its mainly the fans of the English teams that always seem to be like this. Fans that read the English press newspapers. Do u remember when Owen scored his first World Cup goal? Do u remember the comparisons? Owen the new Maradona/Baggio/Platini! Owen the next big thing in world football! Even Rooney after having a brilliant Euro campaign, every1 kept talking about him as if he is the worlds best player.

Even the commentators are terrible when you watch an English game. For example, when you see John Terry miscuing a shot and CLEARLY slipping, they commentator is like "SHEER CLASS by Terry, not many defenders in the world can trick opposition like that"..or for example, Henry, every touch he has for Arsenal the commentator expects it to end up in the net and he just keeps giving him praise over and over and over again saying that there is no striker in the world like Henry. Same thing with Rooney, even when he has a bad day, he makes it look as if it was nothing and he had the performance of his life.

My point being: Gerrard is certainly a great CM, one of the best around, but he is CERTAINLY not as good as how you say he is. And I dont think he deserved the player of the year award AT ALL this year when there were players like Henry and Lampard who had arguably better seasons. Rooney is also a good player, but he is no way as good as how u say he is. OFcourse Rooney had a better season than Cassano! In your logic then, Rooney even had a better season than Maradona this year, am i right? You were right to say it is unfair to compare Rooney to Sheva because they are in different positions, but you say its fair to compare Rooney to Cassano where Cassano has had problems with Roma for the first 4 months and they never played him.. and then he moved to Real where he hardly ever played and was settling in in a new country? and you say some people here are idiotic and ignorant.

Completely agree with you there hitman. It's sad, but true. But English players are overhyped, sometimes to such an extent that it is impossible to gauge how good they really are. I just wish more of them would make the move to European clubs so we can really see how they peform week in week out in agruably "tougher" leagues. I dont think the CL counts, as it is still an English team vs a European team. I would like to see how "top" English players fare playing for AC Milan, Juventus, Barca, etc.....Gerrard is a top player, but I still have some reservations due to how much he is hyped. If he can perform in the pressure cooker serie a environment with a top team, then I think the media is justified in singing his praises. Look at Beckham for instance. A big star at Man Utd, overhyped to the max. Moves to Real Madrid, aside from his set pieces, has not shown the sort of ability that justifies such hype.

I don´t want to start a keyboard war here but who are these players that are not overrated and from withch country do they belong to becaus they cant come from Italy, they have probblem stringing two pases together sometimes ( my father is from Italy and he sometimes during a game say things´s like that, and I aggre)
Fact is that all countries overrate their players, look at Totti´s rep like he´s some kind of savior, Italy overrate him to the max, even more than England does with their players

What the betting sites, the english press, media, reporters, commentators do is hardly basis for an opinion on the English team is it. So what if English commentators mess up and are bias, all country's have bias towards their own. You're a smart man, make you're own opinions on the team and don't let media hyperbole influence your judgement.

People in here seem to hate england because of the hooligan fans, because of the over hypying they get from the media, because of commentators. All of these are rubbish reasons to hate a team. According to that logic i should think all Italians are match fixing cheats because that's what their media say they are. That all goal scorers commentated on by south american commentators are the world's best and the next maradona or pele because they shout 'goooooooooooooool, gol gol gol gol gol, gooooooooooool' everytime the ball is in the net and that half the national teams in the world are thugs because they have hooligan fans i.e. Poland, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, half the African nations, Spain, Italy, etc, etc

Do you see how unjust these claims are now ? To hate a team based on resources outside of a National teams control is pointless.

The media in other countries over hype their own players aswell, how many new 'Maradona's' have their been and how many have truly been successful ? Again, how many new Pele's or Baggio's or Eusebio's or 'Golden Generations' have their been ? It's not just English media. I think you're talking about Owen's goal against Argentina, but that wasn't his first, his first was in the group stages. Either way i don't remember anyone comparing him to those great players you mentioned, i think they probably compared the impact of his goal to impact of the goals scored by those players. Those are two different things.

I always see the fact England are the bookies 2nd favourites being used to prove England are overrated so for those of you who dont understand gambling i'll explain that situation.

The reason England are always at low odds (6/7-1) is that English fans are so patriotic they will back the team heavily no matter what the odds are, just as hundreds of thousands follow the team throughout Europe, we have the most fans of any team except Germany at the world cup and could fill every ground we've played in three times over.

If you knew you will take £50m bets on England no matter what odds you set, would you set the odds at 6-1 or a more realistic 12-1?

Hitmann, yes im a Utd fan too, and i've seen every game Rooney has played for the club i've seen him drag us along for 2 years, a teenager constantly outshining the senior pro's so much so that his strike partner a 3 time CL top scorer is now considered surplus to requirements. In comparing him and Cassano i was looking beyond just the past 6 months of burger munching he's done on Real's bench

As Jim and Conti have said, all nations overrate their players. Totti is a perfect example, every Argentine that can do a stepover is proclaimed a new Maradona, in fact there are no less than 4 new Maradona's in the current Argentine squad! and yet only England (and to a lesser extent Spain) seem to get slammed for it..

haha I was saying that to my dad when they played holland. The whole teams full of New Maradona's and they didn't even take D'Alessandro.

to be honest though, I can't see why some people get on Jim_UK and Stezaguds back. For england fans they are more than forthcoming and genial.

I've noticed that there is a few Turkish people on here and all they do is rave about Emre, Nihat and that guy that was good in Football Manager and no one gets on at the as much.
