During the TIM trophy today the Milan fans held a sign saying:

"Others reinforce and we watch."

Our next surprise

So, after three months of intense "negotiating", this is the squad our directors has given us. I have posted a couple of threads over the last month and a lot of people were arguing that Braida will bring us a surprise at the end of the transfer window. The team certainly surprised us, by getting rid of our best player alongside two good veterans and buying three guys who won't make a difference anytime soon. Now that we understood what the management means by surprises, it made predicting the future of this team a lot easier. And we can anticipate a few more surprises coming our way in the near future.
Before I go on to the future, we should look at the past for a while. For the past a few years, this team has spent very limited amount of money on the transfer market. Even though some players could have been signed at very fair prices. The board of directors overlooked the potential of the current squad and ignored the need for new blood and youth. The fact that we haven't won anything in two years is the result from a few reasons; our players are too old and doesn't have enough energy to go through the whole season at a high level; they already won everything there is and has little desire to play on; lack of transfer funding and new fresh blood; and at last, a bad coach who loses control of his team way too often. I don't suppose football experts in our management couldn't see those problems and hasn't figured out the solution to the problems, but they refused to make a move. In fact, we took that lack of spending even further this year when we sold our best player and brought no one in return.
For the future, I think things are pretty clear. First of all, Kaka will leave next summer. Before you start cursing out at my announcement, hear my reasons. Let's face it, if Shevchenko didn't leave this summer to cause such a huge impact on fans, Kaka would've been in Marid by now. He didn't particularly want to stay with us as he refused to commit to us during the world cup. On top of that, he wanted to win championships or at least be with a team with a desire to become good. While Real Marid have one of the best coaches in the world in Capello as well as a bunch of superstars; we kept a loser coach and gave up our best player with no replacement or significant additions to our squad. Just like what the management did with the Shevchenko replacement this summer. They will start going around telling everyone we will try to sign Ronaldinho to replace Kaka, and they will start negotiating for another three months and come up empty. They will probably sign some other 19 year old like Schneider of Ajax and say he has what it takes to be the next Kaka.
The only thing I don't understand is where all the money went. I mean, we went from the best team in Europe to a second rate contender in Italian league due to the lack of spending. Even though this team made a lot of money with their good record over the years. Are they trying to build a new stadium or something?
Anyway, for this new season, I suggest us all to lose our hopes. We still love this team and support them. Just don't get your hopes too high, because you will be disappointed big time. Just like what I did with our transfer market at the beginning of the summer. I am directing my attention to Inter now. I am really looking forward to see whether that team can really become one of the best teams in Italy and Europe with their success in transfer market. In the end, let me just say that if you know how disappointed this team has been for me over the last two years and this summer, you would know where all of this came from.

This season is very crucial for us.

We will be playing for our integrity -- not just moral but also mercato. Sort of like Italy at the World Cup.

That was a WC squad. What we have no is a borderline IC squad bar midfield.
Our only WC striker is 33 and injury prone. None of the other 3 have prove themselves on the very top level.

Comparing now & 1993 is ridiculous. We WERE the best team then. Now we are just holding onto a top 10 position IMO.
The relative merits of the team in place is an entirely different matter from the transfer season itself. Using your reasoning, you would have to figure Milan had a better transfer season this summer than West Ham because Milan already has better players, right? Tevez and Masherano are not going to make West Ham a better team than Milan, just as they would not have made this Milan team better than the 93-94 team. Yet, if Milan had acquired Tevez and Mascherano, most of you would be hailing this as a tremendously successful transfer season.

In 1993, Milan lost one of its greatest players ever (and I mean that in the true sense of the word) in Marco van Basten. They replaced him from within before buying George Weah two years later. That summer they brought in Desailly, as Jim pointed out, but Desailly was far from being the star he would become at Milan. He was a very good player, but was only then ready to make his international debut in that same year. He was no more established at that time than Oliveira is now and nobody could have been certain without a doubt that he would become the player he ultimately became. So judging the 1993 class from the perspective of 1993, it doesn't seem that transfer season was as good as this one as, at least, Milan found a very capable player to fill Sheva's spot and also acquired one of the most promising young talents in France.

Isn't that brilliant logic? Everyone lose hope so if we don't win anything we won't be upset! I am as optimistic as ever for the upcoming season, regardless of our transfers.

Stop looking at the papers people. All you want is stars. If a player is not a star, he sucks for a lot of people here. Bonera is a great defender and whoever says that he is not, knows nothing about football. Our midfield is pretty much set. We did not need anyone but a back up player. Yes, we didn't even get a back up player but hey, we'll live. We have great balance in our midfield with Pirlo(for me the best player in the world cup), Gattuso(another player that Italy had no chance without and the same goes for Milan) and Seedorf who really was one of the best and most consistand last season and looking at the game with Red Star in Belgrade I think he is ready to do it again. The only thing that we lost in was the attack. But we got Oliveira who was the top scorer in Spain. I wont doubt him at all if he shows no signs of the injury. Just because his name was not world wide doesn't mean he sucks or isn't good enough for Milan. Pirlo's name wasn't as well nor was Kaka's or Gattuso's. Have patience and lets see how he will fit in the team and work with his striking partners.

As for other teams having better teams??? I don't think so. They bought and spent a lot yes, but are they better then us????

Inter's midfield:Stankovic,Cambiasso,Vieira,Figo! Is it better then Pirlo, Seedorf,Gattuso and Kaka??? I really doubt it. Inter is the dumbest club in the world, PERIOD! They spend and rush into every available player on the market wether they need them or not. They signed Dacourt(DM) and Vieira(DM)! Why?? Why sign two defensive midfielders? To play boring football and not be able to attack? They don't have a playmaker. Something that is essential in the Italian football because the game is slow and tactical. That's when you need for someone to take and pull the ball forward. That's where they will be lacking AGAIN for the god knows what season in a row. And still, they spend on names rather then what they need to spend on. So please...stop praising their transfer campaign.

Our team is great and capable of challenging for every prize this year. Our defence finished the last 3-4 months of the season great. If I remember correctly we even had the best defence in the second part of the season this past year. Kaladze seemed to settle in with Nesta which worked great with Serginho and Cafu out wide. Now we got Bonera as well who is a great defender just couldn't really excell at Parma. Maldini will hopefully be healthy again and we also have Jankulovski who we didn't really see last year and Simic. Yes Gallas or Barzagli would have been great, but it is not bad now either.

All in all, I am not ecstatic with the transfers, but I am not dissapointed at all either. I will just be patient and wait for the new players to fit in and give their contribution to an already strong team. Let's hope that they will and then talk about the transfers and whether they were good or not. If Gourcuff can produce great cover for Kaka or even Seedorf then that would be a great transfer wouldnt it. If Oliveira can show what he did in Spain 2 years ago then I have no doubts that he will score 15+ goals in the league for us. As for Bonera, I have no doubts that he was a great signing. Trust me he'll prove it.
Let's just be patient.

btw, only Milan starters playing vs Inter are Kaka (pretty average) and Seedorf (great). Favalli and Boriello scored nice, nice goals after some great work from Seedorf ....
I guess when you say that kaka was average, you`re talking for the first game against Inter, couse in the second he was as great as Seedorf was.

yes, I was referring to the Milan-Inter game where Kaka looked a bit too casual ... kind of like he didn't care what was going on around him, unlike Seedorf who was great and making circles around Inter players.
In the second game, they both rocked

you know, nefremo, I would gladly name a street after you ... thanks for the refreshingly positive read

as for that banner "Others Reinforce, We watch" ... I am no fortuneteller but I am guessing that once the games started, the fans, who had put it up, quickly rolled it up and shoved in ... a shady place.
Just makes me wonder what Inter fans were thinking, while watching their team's perfomance after yet another promising transfer campaign filled with buying stars as soon as they became available without putting much thought into it. I am sure not one or two eyebrows were raised in Curva Nord.

I know, these games are - on paper - simply warm-up friendlies but let's not completely play down their importance to the morale of the team. Also, the start of the season is just 10 days away, so these games should give a decent indication who stands where and who doesn't and it's not like the prep season has just started ... actually, it's gonna end very, very soon.

It would also be refreshing if some people were able to look at the squad objectively and see the negative and positive things ... and also tell us things we don't already know.
