Tribute to Billy Costacurta

I know its a very "Intentionally naive question" but I dont know why is billy called grandpa, is there a literal meaning to it or just simply...and I am not trying to be an "Attention Seeking Troll " as mentioned by the MM genious

we just call him "grandpa" because he's the oldest player in the team... not because he actually has grandchildren... actually him and Martina Colombari just had a baby less than a year ago...

I was looking for a Costacurta thread to post a question on, but I couldn't find one. So, here we go: now there's a Costacurta thread, because Milan's "other" faithful old defender most certainly deserves it.

Anyone know where he is lately? I know he's injured, but I never see much about it on acmilan.com, and he's been absent from our squad for longer than I expected. Does anyone know how bad his injury is, or when he's expected to return?

Oo there is a great thread created by one of our Mods -- SANT. I am not sure where it is now. Will have look at the MM archives.

Latest news is that he is surely going to retire at the end of the season and hopes to get an administrative job at the club.

How long ago did he announce that he's definitely going to retire? It's no surprise of course (though it will be a sad day when he plays his last game), but the last I heard, he wasn't 100% sure he was going to retire. I suspected his choice would probably have something to do with whether or not Maldini retires, and vice-versa.

What sort of administrative job is he going for now? I'd heard the rumor about him wanting to coach, and personally I think it would be fantastic, especially if he does it sooner rather than later: while it would be a gamble since he's never coached before, I can't think of anyone better to understand this weird slump our players are going through than someone who's played alongside them during that time.

San Ringhio, as you see above, Billy started the training course to become a coach... this is more like a certification... see other former players who are in the same "class"

This doesn't necesarily mean he will take over the first team, at least to start... he may eventually follow Baresi or Galli steps and start with one of the Youth teams, to get comfortable in that role after being a player for sooooo long...

Remember the Sacchi team... how many of them are coaches now? This is what I know, most of them successful:

I didn't find a thread for Billy Costacurta,and after his announcment that he will retire from football at the end of the season i thought to open a thread for a historical Milan player before he hang up his boots and become a legend like barezi,Weah,Van basten and the other big names.

Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The player, who will turn 41 in April, is in his 20th campaign with the club and has confirmed that he is preparing to say goodbye to the game and the club he loves.

“This will be my last year as a player, in five months I will definitely hang up my boots,” declared the stopper on Thursday.

The former Italian international had already been close to retiring two years ago, but Vice-President Adriano Galliani convinced him to extend his contract with the Via Turati outfit.

In his long career with Milan, Costacurta has won seven Scudetti and four Champions League titles in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003. He has also won one Coppa Italia and five Italian Super Cups.

In the AEK Athens game on November 21, he became the oldest man ever to play in the Champions League, breaking the record previously set by Belgian goalkeeper Danny Verlinden.

Costacurta was capped 59 times by the Nazionale between 1991 and 1998, appearing in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups – although he was forced to miss the Pasadena Final because of injury.

Paolo Maldini, the only other player remaining from the glorious Milan squad guided by Arrigo Sacchi at the end of the ‘80s, has also stated that he might retire in June.

Correction: Costacurta missed the 1994 WC Final against Brazil not because of injury, but because of accumulated yellow cards... same thing happened one month earlier for the UCL final against Barcelona in Athens.

He's been a great servant to the team and a great professional, i hope he gets a terrific send off deserving of his status at the club.

As for him coaching, i think it would be best for him to learn the ropes outside of Milan, somewhere where he won't be treated with kid gloves and favouritism. As much as i like the idea of old players coming back to us in one form or another, there is always the sense that the club and higher officials are too soft on them because of former glories.

This is something that is happening with some of the players in the current team right now, living off of reputation and not putting in the effort or performances. If after enough opportunities they can't deliver then they should be got rid of, wether it's Van Basten returning as a coach or one of the new recruits like Grimi.

Slightly off on a tangent, but forza billy anyway

A true legend, we will miss u It would have been great if he had played those finals. Probably never got the fame which he actually deserved because of the presence of the players like Maldini and Baresi but I would rate Billy a better defender than Bobby Charlton and many others.
