What is so wrong about this?

--------------Dida-----------------
Oddo-----Nesta--Maldini-----Janku (KK)
---Gattuso----Pirlo-----Seedorf---
-------Kaka--------Ronaldinho------
------------Ronaldo----------------

That would be the team to beat in Europe...

What I am suggesting is to ADD to the current squad. What you are suggesting is the CHANGE the ENTIRE squad. Doing that once in five years is fine, but do that every year and you wont win a thing, go ask the clowns that run Real MAdrid. Now to your points:

1) Okay, the Dida issue is contentious. I happen to think he is fantastic, but fine, differences of opinion are welcome. Amelia would be a good heir.

2) Maldini's condition is not good? In what sense? Are you his personal physician? I can judge only what I see on the pitch and from what I saw last week, I wouldnt swap Paolo for any defender in the world, regardless of age. Simic is a backup, and a very high quality one too. Where else can you get a certain national team starter as a backup? You say Oddo and Nesta can play for another 2 or 3 years. SO good isnt it? Why buy replacements now? To rot on the bench for 3 years?

3) Where you going to play Sneijder and Van der Waart? We currently have Pirlo, Seedorf, Gourcuff, Gattuso, Ambro, Brocchi all vying for 3 midfield slots---and you want to buy 2 more players?

4) You say we dont need to buy any attackers if we buy 2 midfielders....hmmm, not makking much sense..

Defense: totally disagree with the idea our defence is good. Simic, Jankulovski is not our level. Bonera can progress, so we can keep him. Maldini's condition is not good, he is too old <sad to say this>. Oddo, Nesta can only play in 2 or 3 years more, next will be kaladze. But as for the next season, we don't have to buy to many defender. I think 2 will be enough <Alves and Kompany are my choice>

Midfield: sneijder will be a very good addition. And I think we can have Vaart too, because HSV can't play champion league next year. With these 2 I don't think we will need any midfielder in about 3 year or more.

Attacker: if we have sneijder and vaart, no need to have any more striker. Save the money for more defenders.

In the sense that Maldini can't play 2 games back to back at 100% at the moment. Is his condition likely to improve? It's possible i guess, but given that his injuries are becomming a little more frequent, it makes sense to look to the future and use Maldini sparingly. Simic has said he wants to leave and has criticised Ancelotti on several occassions. So unless he has 'another' change of heart, i expect him to go.

We need two new midfielders to freshen things up. Our midfield 3 has been the same for many years now. We've never had a true replacement for Pirlo, never any decent competition for Seedorf and now with Kaka performing heroics, we need another replacement for him. Or at least someone capable of filling multiple roles. Barusso would be a great purchase and along with Gourcuff play a good role in pressuring some of the midfielders.

We need new faces and if the likes of Seedorf have to fight harder for their place or spend more time on the bench, then so be it. They don't have any right to a starting position.

So i agree and disagree with you. We need to add, but it needs to be more than just 2 or 3 people.

I would take that "decent" side over any other in Europe, although you may beg to differ.

We certainly don't need maldini to play in every game, i would prefer giving Bonera more chances, this guy has been pretty good since playing at CB and has totally exceed even my very optimistic expectation of him. Bonera is now looking good enough to become a mainstay in our defence. Kaladze is pretty good too when he played so we are pretty covered in CB, if Simic left then we need 1 more CB. Janku and oddo are looking like the part now, we could probably do with more options but with Favailli playing so well when given the chance, i rather don't see how the LB could be improve without crowding our squad, having 1 more RB is necessary as Cafu is leaving.

I agree we do need more option in midfield, Gourcuff is showing his quality and is good enough to play in pirlo position or seedorf's position. Ambro and brocchi are adequate backup. Kaka need to have more rest, seedorf could be an option in playing in kaka's role. We do need 1-2 more midfielders to give the team an edge.

@Jim:

It's not a question of when, but a question of whether we need to make any wholesale changes at this point in time when the team is still highly competitive.

But even with Maldini at 50%, we still dont need any more central defenders. We still have Nesta, Kaladze, Simic, and Bonera. If Simic leaves then we ought to get a good backup. But to get a big, star name defender would mean one of Maldini or Nesta consistently being on the bench, or our new star defender sitting on the bench, or Bonera/Kaladze having fewer opportunities. I say go with what we've got---Bonera can definitely develop into a rock in our defense for years to come. Only players we need now are good wingbacks. A pacy left and right wingback would be great.

I agree with you, we do need a replacement for Pirlo, but aside from that why do we need anymore midfielders. Gattuso is adequately subbed by Ambro and Brocchi. Seedorf is getting competition from Gourcuff. The only one with no real sub is Pirlo. As for Kaka, yes we do need to get a good alternative to sub him, but if we buy Ronaldinho, then we dont need a sub anymore. They either play together behind one forward, or one gets a rest while the other plays behind two forwards.

So, according to my count, if we get Ronaldinho, we probably need around 1-2 additional players and we have a superb squad for next year.

It's no coincedence that one of our main transfer targets is a central defender, which is why we've been linked with Alex most recently and a host of other names from Alexsis to Barzagli. Of course it's likely this is just speculation and not true, however i think a central defender is one of our objectives.

I think Simic will more than likely leave this summer and Costacurta will finally hang up his boots. Maldini for me is a player who should only play when it's necessary, he's not going to play alot of consecutive games next season if indeed he does continue his career. The more often he plays the more likely he'll get injured again which will in turn leave him fewer opportunities of performing at his best. I don't see it as a problem having good players competing for limited amount of spaces, if they don't like it then they can leave.

You're right about the full-backs and with a Pirlo & Kaka alternative, add to this a possible and probable new striker (be it Pozzi returning or a new face), a probable replacement for Brocchi (Barusso) and maybe a new keeper (a distinct possibility) you end up with far more than just 1 or 2 additions.

Personally i think had it not been for the scandal last summer we'd should have and would have made significant changes to our team. We are competitive, but our squad doesn't necessarily have the quality in depth to successfully compete on 3 fronts for a whole season.

Anyway, back to Ronaldinho and apparently Berlusconi has said he's put aside 100 million for him!

and the Soap opera goes on:
http://www.calciomercato.com/index.php?c=23&a=40267

it says that Dinho is close to renewing with barca, something that could be taken care of at the end of the season as there is hardly any need to hurry.
Part of the renewal will consist of Barca taking part in Dinho's charity foundation in Brazil and also Porto Alegre (Dinho's first club, I think) would become a Barca satellite club.

Personally, I hope he stays where he is

I'm surprised no one mentioned Rino's recent comments about thinking it would be better if Milan used the money to buy a few players rather than just getting Dinho

when was that, Dev? Must have missed it.
I remember him saying something on the matter but it was more like a pro-dinho comment ... something like "4th place and CL is important for Milan in order to get important champions like Dinho, for instance"

This comment by Rino was more recent, and I think comes due to us reaching the semis of the UCL...he is riding a wave of confidence, and so is the team, so, I can fully understand his potential change of heart...

I however, remain hopeful that we will have the following partnership:

*******Ronaldo*******

**Ronaldinho*****Kaka**

Looks almost unstoppable.

He said what most of us have been saying for sometime now...why buy Ronnie when we can "pimp out my squad" for the same price

Milan doesnt need 5 new players, for example. Berlusconi could buy Ronaldinho and get 2 more pieces, if needed.
But overall we are a complete team, not full of holes.
