Favalli is past his prime & he just wants 2 make money now. Wat better place than 2 do it a Milan. Hopefully we can trade him plus cash 4 Oddo.

Answer me a few little questions. Lets say we get Grosso, we spend quite a fair amount for him too, because he's of good quality (and not a player I'd reject).

Now where do we go from there, we've spent a fair amount on a transfer that wasn't too necessary, on a player who is similar to Serginho, in that he's attacking minded. So when we need a solid LB to fill that role once every often (for example when Cafu is out RB), who must we turn to? We know we can't rely solely on Maldini or Kaladze to do this regularly, both are technically CB now.

And what about the other transfers we must consider? Firstly, there's the possibility of Sheva leaving, and if he does, we'll need a fair few funds to try and replace him. Then we need to consider the strengthening of the midfield, which we will need some funds for, especially if we're looking to get someone fairly decent.

Then of course, there's the central defence and probably RB, where we need to get some new players to sure up the side/squad.

The LB problem isn't a great concern at this point, as we're adequately covered for a regular LB in Serginho (who has been outstanding there this past season) and possibly Janku (though Carlo clearly favours to play him in the midfield) if need be. Having a solid and experienced back-up isn't going to be bad for us, as once in a while, we need to defend and having a more defensive player will be better equipped to do that.

Also, consider Juve at this point. The chances of stars leaving them are VERY high, and a certain Zambrotta (who can play both wing backs and wings) seems a more tastier option than Grosso.

You made very reasonable remarks, 1983, but to follow your line of thinking, I can say that we have enough cover for the LB position even before the arrival of Favalli, because Maldini and Kaladze, despite their current status as CB's, can do well (specially Maldini, of course) as LB's. So in fact I really don't get the point of picking either Favalli or Grosso, but If I was to choose one of them, I'll certainly go for the later.

Regarding the other transfers, I agree with you: we need to strenghten our retaguard and midfield.

Well, I can understand why you would pick Grosso, and given the right circumstances, I think most people would. However, I don't think in this case it was as easy and cheap to pick up Grosso as it was Favalli, and to do so would probably have hampered our overall transfer market.

Bringing in Favalli wasn't costly and was very easy, simply done to strengthen the overall squad and ease the pressure on Maldini and Kaladze.

BTW: is Maldini fully recovered? To me that remains like a foggy story, perhaps I'm missing some late information.

Maldini needs a couple of months after his surgery. He should be back in time for when the players return to train for next season.

It's beyond me why we would fill in one team spot, and add to our sallary burden by getting a 34 yo player, who would hardly ever make it into the first team unless 3-4 other people (Maldini, Sergio, Kakha, Gallas) are unable to play.
The only reasonable explanation IMO is that we got him just until we make sure that we capture Gallas and after that we would offload Favali back to Lazio as part of a deal for Oddo ... the same could happen with other teams, not just Lazio.
Well as far as I know Favalli was a genuine CB and he has only started playing as a LB a year or so ago. I might be wrong but I think he went with Italy's squad for Euro 2004 as a CB

Favalli played left back at Lazio for years.
