it's true that at the 2002 WC he hadn't reached his potential for that time as he was returning from injury and was just starting to click but let's not forget that his potential now, at age 30, is about 70% of his potential in 2002, when he was still officially just 25 yo.
So, even Milan Lab helps him achieve close to 100% of his current potential - the fitness level, reactivity, agility, etc his 30 yo body is capable of - he would be around the form he had in the 2002 WC and his first 1-2 years at Real M, which were easily his best in Madrid. That's my point - Milan Lab can help Ronaldo get to 90-100% of his capacity but it's namely that capacity that has decreased over the years since 2002/2003 as now his body would sustain and react differently to physical stress than it would have back then whenhe was still in his mid 20s, even after the injury.

Very well. Point well taken. I was trying to say something similar, but perhaps not quite as eloquently. My only point is this: if we can get him to play close to 100% of his potential at present (taking into account everything---his 30y/o body, knee injury, motivation level, appetite
) then we've got ourselves an excellent player. Because as I see it, he still has what it takes. It's just a question of pushing him to perform at a consistently high level---which is pretty obvious that Madrid failed to do, and is probably the reason why Capello decided to let him go. |

i agree with both of you with regards to Ronaldo. Should we get him in the best shape we can, we can't get back the pre 1998 WC Final Ronaldo, but we can get something along the lines of Ronaldo of 2002, which to be frank, is still going to by enlarge be the best forward in the world.
I honestly think that should we play our cards right, we can improve Ronaldo to play better than the 2002 WC. Physically we can look to get him at best fitness (which will be a slightly bigger and slower player, but a more powerful forward), but we also get a more experienced Ronaldo, which has learnt to play more efficiently (thanks to his desire not to run) |

Ronaldo will be a brazilian Weah, don't know about speed but as an overall player it will be something quite similar, I'm sure. Milan signed the lion at the same age. Forza 99!

As I mentioned about 2 posts earlier, we may never have that pre-injury Ronaldo but if we can get 90-100% of this 30 yo guy, with all that talant and ability he has, we've got ourselves a top-5 striker at a bargain price ...

why did he stop at 99?
with his girth he could have easily gone for a 3 figure number.

yeah, he was 29 at the moment of the transfer but became 30 several months later.

![]() tbh though, I did mean what I said in the statement. Seriously, in Milan we should at least be aiming for the Ronaldo of 2002, which at the time was the best forward in the world. Since then we have possibly players like Henry, Sheva and Etoo aiming for top spot, but I personally think should Ronaldo be at that level, he's still a better forward than these 3. |

Sorry for the off topic there. Anyways, was R99 set to make his debut against Ascoli on Sunday? Or was he deemed still unfit... |

He may have made his debut, though probably not as a starter (most likely by coming off the bench). It's thought that within a month, Ronaldo will have regained his fitness, though will probably need a little while before we really see what we can expect.
