Milan History - Things you should know

I think AC stands for "Associazione Calcio", which in English translates to "Football Club" i.e. the "FC" you see in the names of a lot of teams around.

And after all of the time, Milan still the best.. If u see, that just only Milan have a loyal player for the club, and if they move from Milan, they still love the club..

Actually, I think it originated as the "Athletic Club" of Milan, when we had a cricket team as well...then during the Mussolini years, when all clubs needed to tred/adpot the "nationalist" path/ideolgy, club names were "Italianized" so, hence the "Associazione Calcio" coming to the fore....could be wrong though...

Warro, you're partially right... you guys just need to read this thread from the start, where most of the info. is...

"Milan Cricket and Football Club" was the original name, from 1899...

"Associazione Calcio Milan" was the name since 1938 (here you were right about the Mussolini years, but remember Inter was the "official" government team...and the "Cricket" part was obsolete...

Legally, the name is Milan Associazione Calcio now... since about 3 years ago... I don't remember they had to change it... even though we're still A.C. Milan to everybody... not Milan A.C.

Inter has always tried to do the opposite... since we had Italian denomination and English name, they went the other way around Football Club Internazionale di Milano...

And it's formulated a bit akward too. Milan have won 17 scudetti since 1900 not 1952 as you might understand.

Anyway it's a great thread although wikipedia might even offer more it's always cooler to read this stuff from a fellow-fan.

and no, Wikipedia doesn't have details explained at the first pages of the thread, before people started just pasting stuff from wiki...

ELI-JAH, I think you missed the explanation on the name change... it was not because of Fascism or Mussolini Regime that it was changed... at least, not entirely.

before Berlusconi, Milan had terrible management... in the early 80's Felice Colombo was Milan's President, and he was involved in the Totonero scandal... you can read about this in previous pages of this thread...

then, Milan was close to bankrupcy, under president Giuseppe Farina, who fled to South Africa with a lot of money, apparently player's money, when Berlusconi acquired the team in 1986...

Gianni Rivera, as a Milan legend was part of Milan's management at some point...but he didn't do very well, and he had personal disputes with Berlusconi, so he was removed....
