Agent’s Opening Gambit In Ferdinand Contract Negotiations
4/19/2005 10:18:00 AM
In the wake of the controversy of Rio Ferdinand's ‘chance’ meeting with his agent Pini Zahavi and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon in a London restaurant, Zahavi has taken the opportunity to warn Manchester United to offer his client a deal worthy of "the best defender in the world."
While that description might surprise one or two people in Italy if not elsewhere, it would appear that 26-year-old Ferdinand is stalling over a new Old Trafford contract - amid as yet unfounded allegations that he has been “tapped up” by Chelsea.

Zahavi has told the Sun newspaper: "He loves it in Manchester and wants to stay but it depends on United, not him if it happens.

"Rio is the best central defender in the world and deserves to earn at least the same, if not more than the others."

Ferdinand’s future at United has become somewhat uncertain after allegations of a second meeting between the player, Zahavi and Kenyon.

Chelsea have attempted to dismiss the speculation by issuing a statement saying they are not interested in Ferdinand, while Zahavi says the player will not be moving back to London to join the Blues.

The agent added: "Rio cannot see himself playing for another club and I can assure everyone that Chelsea is not on the agenda. They already have two fantastic central defenders( True, but then they also have a couple of decent left-backs).

"He is ready to go a long way to make sure he stays at United but everybody has to give a little. It’s called negotiation.

"We are focusing on staying at United and we hope very, very much to conclude an agreement in the next couple of weeks.

"But if we don’t, Rio will see out the two years of his contract, unless United choose to sell him."

Zahavi says he is amazed that his and Ferdinand’s restaurant meeting caused such a rumpus.

"There were hundreds of people around, we weren’t hiding anything. Rio was having photos with people and signing autographs for about 20 minutes," said Zahavi.

"We made an innocent mistake, there’s no doubt, but it has become crazy.

"It was nothing to do with football but if we had known the fuss it would cause we would not have bothered."

he'll probably be given parity with Keane, which he deserves imo. He is our future captain and one of the best defenders in the world, if we can give Phil Neville £50k a week then Rio is surely worth £90k

Sure we expect Milan to win, but there's no guarantees even if a weak liverpool (or chelsea) team made it to the final. Imagine this, Liverpool hit that deflected 30 yarder in the final, then hang on for dear life for the rest of the match.
Shev hits the post twice, Crespo once, Carragher brings down Kaka in the box, and the refree waves play on and before you know it, the scousers have stolen it! And there's no second leg!
No way. Chelsea must dump them out!

I don't know. 90k is pretty high and we haven't been doing too well financially lately.
And Phil Neville never used threatening tabloid talk as a bargaining chip for higher wages Also, how do you know that Phil is on 50k. I don't think that is true.

True, id certainly prefer Chelsea to bring the trophy back if it has to return to England, i just think that Chelsea are capable of troubling Milan as a gambler, if this was a 2 legged final, id be leaning towards Chelsea fortunately its a one off game and it seems that Chelsea take a little while to suss out there opponents, if Milan scored early that should do it

in our tiered wage system 90k is supposed to be reserved for the few key players, only Keane and maybe Ruud earn that at present and Rio is at least as important to us as they are.

hard to believe isnt it
Utd have a tiered wage system that was brought in a few years ago, though they are moving to replacing it partially with performance related pay.

90-100k is tier 1 for the captain and key players

60-70k is tier 2 for essential and long serving members. Rio, Giggsy, Ruud, Scholes maybe (though he might still be in 3)

50k is the 3rd tier wage, reserved for the players who are either new to the squad (Rooney) or long serving reliable squad members (Phil, Gary Neville). Phil and Gary Neville were both moved onto this tier a year or 2 ago.

As far as i remember Ronaldo is trying to move onto this tier as he is still payed squad member wages (15-20k) with Fortune, Brown etc

I didn't know about that tiered system.
But yesterday's performance wasn't even worthy of squad player wages.

F*ckin result. I guess, the play was f*ckin too. I wonder if it so difficult to score for our strikers or meidfielders. In 5 premier matches only one goal Rio - sh*te. And he even wants 120000£ per week . Ruud ~ 0. Ronnie instead striking - dives Only Roon... only Roon....

Sir Alex Ferguson accused Everton of intimidating a weak referee as nine-man ManYoo crashed to defeat at Goodison Park in disgrace.

Ah poor Fergie has the excuse all ready to roll out again. Notice how United never loose on merit, they is always an injustice involved. Everton intimidated the referee, they fouled too much.

News flash Fergie what goes around comes around. He didn't say that when Roy Keane and the boys chansed the ref half way around the pitch did he? Nor did he say anything about fouls when United kicked Arsenal off the pitch in both games last season...

As you can tell I'm not a united fan, i have great respect for Fergie and all he has achieved and you have to take your hat off to him. Now though he is passed his sell by date and he is just simply patethic.

You are a Mourinho "admirer" when he does something similar but knock Fergie for it. I'm not saying that you should respect Fergie or anything. I know he isn't well liked by people who are not United fans, but come on, don't say that you used to respect Fergie, we know you enjoy it when United lose. Classic ABU stuff.

True I enjoy watching united loose, i hate united through and through. But hate and respect are two entirely different things my friend...

I hate Fabio Capello for the way he turned on his words and became Juve coach but at the same time I do respect the man and everything he has done in the game.

Also I should say there is a world of difference between the way Fregie and Jose go about their respective business. What I like about Jose is his complete Psychological approach and words. He has taken it to a different level and makes the two others look very ordinary indeed in their 'mind games'.

He did the same thing in the treble season, its just his way. These excuses are for the public but in private the players will get an absolute bollocking for this, and Keane (whose public opinions are actually just Fergies private warnings) will no doubt threaten half the squad with being sold in the summer

He has a different style but i wouldnt say its better necesarily. As with Fergie and Wenger, the words are more effective when the team is winning on the pitch so its better to judge his style when (if?) they go through a rough patch. Right now Chelsea's dominance is such that if Mourinho said Chelsea's standard training methods were eating dog sh*t whilst watching Charles Bronson movies the press would still proclaim him a genius

As for yesterday, and the rest of our low scoring performances, the problem is tactical. Fergie does know this and told the press the situation last week. Its the very thing we've been discussing in this thread all season, that we are having to play 3 midfielders centrally to keep Keane fit and in the side.

Neville to escape further punishment

Gary Neville is set to escape extra punishment over his red-card shame at Goodison Park.

Gary Neville: Red-card shame. (TonyMarshall/Empics)

The Manchester United full-back was sent off for violent conduct by referee Phil Dowd during the second half of his side's 1-0 defeat at Everton after he kicked the ball into the crowd.

Sir Alex Ferguson condemned the behaviour, claiming the veteran England star 'should have known better'.

The incident immediately raised the prospect of intervention by Merseyside Police and the possibility of an FA charge in addition to an automatic three-match ban which will rule Neville out of the Premiership clashes with Newcastle, Charlton and West Brom.

However, those fears have are now receding, with Soho Square officials unlikely to investigate the incident further as Neville is already being punished for the offence.

Merseyside Police have so far received no public complaint over Neville's conduct and, because there was no incitement element to the defender's actions, are happy to leave the matter in the hands of the FA and Everton, who have privately declared their intention to let the matter drop.

Paul Scholes will serve a one-match ban after it was confirmed he was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
