Milan History - Things you should know

I was wondering, is there any political diference between Inter and Milan, maybe not now but in the past, regarding that one club is a working class club, and other of richer citizens of Milan? When i search for that information, i always come to contradictional facts... some say Milan was working class club, and some say its Inter...

Traditionally, Inter has been associated with the upper class... and it was pretty much the "official" club of the Mussolini era... still, more on the "right/conservative political wing"

Milan, on the other side, has been more related to the working class... to the "left"

However, in recent years this changed a bit since Silvio Berlusconi is Milan's owner, richest man in Italy, and head of a political party "Forza Italia" which is considered Conservative...

And Moratti, Inter's owner, and a rich oiler, is known to have more sympathy for the "left wing"

Wikipedia Inter article also gives a screwdriver/braggart figure/metaphore to the rivalry.

The rivalry is especially heated since Inter broke off from AC Milan. Inter was seen as the middle-class club (nicknamed baüscia, a Milanese term meaning "braggart"), whereas AC Milan was the working-class team (nicknamed casciavit, meaning in the Milanese dialect both "screwdriver", with reference to the operation of Milan's street cars and the working-class people who used them, and "awkward") and was, and still is, mostly supported by migrants from Southern Italy.

Great thread. I actually registered at the site because I enjoyed it so much, and learned some very intersting things about Milan I did not know. I grew up outside Milano during much of the glory years (1987-1994), and those Milan teams were my heros. I remember I once saw Rijkaard and van Basten at Linate airport and I was just in awe; it is one of those memories a seven year old never forgets. My question is: Are there any great books on the history of AC Milan? Or books on those Milan team from the late 80's and early 90's?

MarcoVB9, you can probably find books about the team in Milano area, like special editions from 1999 because of the centenary...

It was during the start of the Capello era... we went 52 games unbeaten...

We were unbeaten for 58 games in a row, more than a season (1991-1992) and a half (1992-1993). The game vs Parma at "San Siro" (0-1, Asprilla from a free kick) could be the 59th, if we haven't lost that game...

5. 19/04/89: Milan 5-0 Real Madrid, European Cup semi-final, second leg


Behind every great Milan side, it seems, is an era-defining victory over a Spanish superpower. Just as Fabio Capello's cosmopolitan mid-90s collective trounced Barcelona in the 1994 Champions League final, so Arrigo Sacchi's ancestors smashed Real Madrid 5-0 in the 1989 semi-final. This was a top-shelf Real side - in the middle of a run of five consecutive titles, and with a devastating attacking unit of Bernd Schuster, Martin Vazquez, Michel, Hugo Sanchez and Emilio Butragueno (the following season they would score a La Liga record 107 goals). Yet they were obliterated, five down inside an hour and lucky that Milan spent the last half hour savouring the moment.

Fittingly, given the English template that Sacchi had used to revolutionise Italian football, most of the goals had a strong English flavour, with three from crosses and another that was thrillingly route-one. Carlo Ancelotti scored the first, zig-zagging past two in midfield before lashing a 25-yarder through Paco Buyo's feeble flap, and seven minutes Frank Rijkaard rammed in a header from Mauro Tassotti's cross after Madrid were caught short at a short corner. Ruud Gullit made it three on half-time, leaping majestically to head in Roberto Donadoni's inviting cross, and just after the break he knocked down Rijkaard's long pass for Marco Van Basten to thrash in the fourth. Madrid's woe was complete when, from another short corner, Donadoni's near-post drive sneaked past the miserable Buyo. Milan added four more against Steaua Bucharest in an equally one-sided final, but it was here that they made their formal, undeniable application for greatness.
