not sure what you mean ... maybe you just got their names reversed because if you interchange Ronie for Henry and vice versa, the above text would indeed make sense
it's Ronie who cost us 7.5-8 mil euros at 30 yo, unlike Henry, who at 30 yo, is expected to cost around 25 mil BP i.e. just short of 40 mil euros.

I saw an article on goal.com about Mascherano going to Liverpool and how they can switch to a 3-4-3 formation, it was an interesting read. This made me think that it could easily be transferred to our team, the main idea is that the third cb is actually the defensive midfielder, in the article's case Mascherano (who has played cb in Argentina) and in our case Gattuso.

This would be ideal for Gattuso, his main role would therefore just be staying back and covering the defence, plus he'd be more central in position rather than being chucked out on the right. I think it would be a greater use of his obvious talents, i.e. stamina & bullish tackling.

The full-backs play as wide men when going forward and move into a more midfield position, Pirlo would not need to have as many defensive duties, Kaka could come a bit deeper or stay in his natural position. I think it has many benefits.

So with a bit of fantasy thrown in, i think we could line up like this: Option 1.

--------------------Buffon----------------------
-------------Nesta---------Terry----------------
-------------------Gattuso----------------------
---Oddo----Lampard-------Pirlo--------Abidal----
---------------------Kaka-----------------------
-----------Ronaldo---------Ronaldinho-----------

Option 2.

--------------------Buffon----------------------
-------------Nesta---------Terry----------------
-------------------Gattuso----------------------
---Oddo------Kaka----------Pirlo--------Abidal---
---Rossina----------Ronaldo---------Ronaldinho---

So something like one of those two options. Naturally i'm not saying we'd buy all those players, but with the right choices we could have a much better platform when attacking. When defending the full-backs would obviously drop back to make a 4 at the back.

Not bad eh?

The only change you made in both your options is basically changed positions with Pirlo and Gattuso. Any fullbacks will still have to track back if needed and can attack if able, doesn't really matter where you put them in a arbitrary formation.

--------------------Dida------------------------
-------------Nesta---------Maldini--------------
-------------------Gattuso----------------------
---Oddo----Seedorf-------Pirlo------Jankulovski--
---------------------Kaka-----------------------
-----------Ronaldo---------Gilardino-------------

With todays players, as I said, just changed the roles of Pirlo and Gattuso.

I agree with Cris. We've employed this style of playing for some time now whenever we play attacking backs on both sides of the defence, like Cafu/Oddo and Janku/Sergio at RB and LB respectively.
Only dif is, as kris mentioned, the position of Pirlo and Gattuso.

Also, I am not sure that Gattuso is ideal for a position right in front of the CD as he tends to tackle a bit too recklessly/emotionally and this would lead to many dangerous freekicks against Milan. I think that a player like Diarra, who is still tough but more composed and restrained in his emotions, not to mention with better vision in play build-up, would be ideal for this role ... same goes for players like Makelele, Mascherano, Vieira, Emerson, etc.

One other thing, I don't think Abidal could be used as a Left wingback since he is pretty tall and muscular, heavy-set for a footballer. These are not characteristics that would allow him to constantly run up and down the whole left side from defense to attack. he is indeed pretty good going forward but at lyon or French NT he does that only occasionally as his role is that of a LB, whose primary role is defensive cover and attcks only the circumstances allow him to ... and even then, you will see him stop near the center line or a little farther than that but won't go as far as the PA territory of the opposing team.

For the role of a wingback, one needs slimmer and lighter players like Mancini, Cafu, Serginho, Cicinho, etc, etc.
It's basically the same reason why long-distance runners are slim, while short-distance sprinters are strong and muscular with the built of bodybuilders - muscles are the heaviest and most dense tissue in our body. At short distances being more muscular may benefit you as it gives more speed, more burts and reactivity, but over longer distances it will wear you down rather quickly.

Gattuso's natural position is DMC,but because we got pirlo who cant play another position gattuso is playing as RM.

Question:In that formations the 2 R+LB's are playing in midfielder's position? They are wingers?Or full backs?

they are wingbacks, neither pure wingers not pure backs ... it's basically how a 3-5-2 formation works

They're not wingers, they're full-backs, though you could have wing-backs there if you wanted.

In some respects it is, but not all. You have to remember that there are still 4 defenders at the back when defending, it's when attacking it goes to a 3-4-3. The third defensive spot is filled by a defensive midfielder and not another CB. In a 3-5-2 you would probably have 3 CBs and a defensive holding midfielder in the middle, though i guess equally that middle man could be pushed forward, but that's just splitting hairs. The point being by having a defensive midfielder instead of a third CB you free up a space in the team.

While the holding midfielder does need some ability, the fact is that he doesn't need a vast amount as that's not his job. He's not there to spray the ball around, just make short passes. The other midfielders and forwards are there to come deep if need be, it's not like there will be a huge 60 yard gap between Gattuso and the other players up the pitch meaning he'll have to play majestic long/through balls all the time.

I also disagree that Abidal couldn't cope there, i think he'd fit in fine. The times i've seen him for Lyon he's always motoring forward on overlapping runs with Malouda and alot of the time he can be found in the opposition's half. Plus i put him there for his physique, he needs to be powerful like a Zambrotta, Taiwo or Eboue. Those players are fine running up and down all day and you wouldn't say any of them are the 'thinner/slimline' type of wingback. All they need is good stamina and some ability to get forward, Abidal has both of these.

There's a difference between having attacking full-backs and how you play them. Just because we have them doesn't mean there always effective. I think this system would improve their effectiveness.

My favorite system is the 4-4-2 and i was thinking whow will this work...........

-------------------------Buffon-----------------------------

Alves-----------Nesta----------Albiol----------------Abidal--

Kaka--------------Gattuso-----Pirlo---------------Ronaldinho-

--------------------Villa--------Ronaldo---------------------

Well i like this system, and i know that kaka and ronaldinho will not help us in defence so i've got two strong full backs Alves and Abidal which they would run very much and help the team.
I also think that if kaka and ronaldinho as ML and MR doesn't works good then i can change it to 3-5-2 with alves and abidal as wing backs and Kaka and ronaldinho as AML and AMR.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I would love to see that team and one of this two systems but only if i've got two strong full backs like alves and abidal, otherwise no!With them i can feel very relax in every game for my defence.

But Pirlo will be there, he'll be in midfield. I don't really see the problem you're trying to highlight.

rosoneri_11 i think Albiol is a good defender also, in fact it was probably him i was thinking of and not Moretti. I know one of them got some really good reviews in the first half of the season, i just don't know for sure which one it was

The only thing with your formation (for me at least) is Kaka being stuck out on the right, naturally players can swap positions and drift around, but we all know Kaka himself likes having the freedom to move and likes running behind 2 forwards in a more central position. It's a good 11 though.

Albiol is a great player. He is 18-20 years old and he is parten with Ayala in center defence. He will learn a lot of things from Ayala + he has great abilities,he would be a great defender.I have watched him and i can say you that he is like Nesta,he is tall and very strong, and he is very very fast with great pace.I think the combination of great defender+he is very fast=The ideal defender.

As for the kaka's position i puted him there because he plays the same role at brazil team with ronaldinho at left.I know he can play better as an ACM(i think)but whoes gona play MR?Gattuso's natural position is DMC and not RM, on the other hand Pirlo can't play there,so whoes next?Only kaka(no comment for seedorf).
--------------------------------------------------------------------
And something else. When that kid gourcuff will start to earn, and play game with us and in few time to become a key player for us?Know he is playing becose we had seedorf(because carlo believe he is better),and if we sign ronaldinho when he will play?Only if we will use ronaldinho as a striker and gourcuff in seedorf's position.

The problem imho is that many clubs (Chelsea for example) buy players for the wrong reason and then are forced to change their formation to accomodate the additional players. Chelsea are doing ok with a 4-4-2 formation but were better with a 4-3-3 formation.

In theory a coach should choose his formation and buy players that suit the formation, not buy players and change the formation to suit them.

If Ronaldinho ever arrived then I wouldn't be surprised to see the 4-3-2-1 xmas tree being implemented, whether Kaka liked it or not.

I'm sure coach Dunga would love to have Kaka and Ronaldinho in the same team, but imho do we really need Kaka and Ronaldinho in the same team? (don't all jump down my throat at once)

Ronaldinho has the flair but Kaka is far more consistent imho

Personally, I think we lack width and real speed on the wings and I would prefer a 4-4-2 with Kaka higher up the field:

-------------------------Buffon-----------------------------

Cicinho-----------Nesta----------Cris--------------Zambrotta

C.Ronaldo--------------Gattuso-----Pirlo---------------Mancini?

------------------Kaka------------------------------------

----------------------------Ronaldo---------------------

Left side of midfield isn't all that clear for me.

Just my opinion
