Mario Yepes

After watching T. Silva as CDM, and Mario Yepes play at CB, I can't help but ask 2 questions:

1. How many players can be equally effective or even more effective in different positions?

2. How many career "average" players could have been excellent players if they played on a BIG team?

Yepes has really impressed me this year. He has not played much, and granted, not against Great competition, but I'm not hesitant in saying his performances have shown he could be considered one of the best Serie A defenders (5-8)...He's been that good. If there are 20 Serie A teams, then there are 40 starting CB's. I'd like for someone to offer their rankings of Serie A CB's, especially as we're looking for a future start to replace Milan Legend Alessandro Nesta.

Anyways, Just want to create this thread to discuss Yepes, who could prove to be a crucial player for us this year in our race to the Scudetto. He's done very good stepping in for Nesta or T. Silva...

Forza Milan

Well, we have had several players in that category. The first one that comes to my mind is Frank Rijkaard who is just as exceptional playing in DM as in CB. Then Desailly, who won UCL with Marseille as a CB but upon his arrival Capello made it clear right from the outset that his plan was to play him as a DM. Understandable decision since we had Baresi+Billy that time, but he effortlessly returned to his old position when those two were suspended in 1994 CL final against Barca, even scored one goal. The most recent one is Pirlo. He did play as a deep playmaker with Baggio acted as a treq in Brescia but never did he do it better than with Milan. The other example is Zambrotta. He played as a winger or RM with Bari and his first few years with Juve before moving to LB, and that's where he impressed me the most.

He just played in, what, 2-3 games, so it's kinda difficult to rank him amongst other CBs in seri A. But I agree that his performances so far have been positively surprising. His presence as a CB gives me much more assured calmness and confidence than say, Bonera. And for a player of his age, he looks very fit too.

Mario Yepes is a great player...I remember him playing for PSG.Dont forget that last year Chievo's defense was 3rd best in Serie A and Yepes was a key player in that team.
When he came to Milan i knew that we got an excellent back-up CB.....

Exactly, I thought that Yepes was a good, cheap and willing back-up compared to a dis-spirited Kaladze last season. At the rate that Nesta is getting injured , Yepes may play an incredibly important role for the season.

I would go as far as to say that the back-up position for Nesta is key requirement for every season.

The guy deserves a lot of credit this season as he's been reliable at the back for us and adds confidence to the side. Right now he's without a doubt our third best CB.

Although off topic I have to say I was surprised how well Legro fit into the side before he got injured against Lazio. He was solid and pretty assured.

I thought the same, he was pretty solid while on the pitch. i was impressed how he fit in so quickly in our scheme of defense.
