At the beginning of the 1980's, there was a scandal similar to the Moggipoli: the Totonero, involving illegal bets.
Among the players involved, were Paolo Rossi, who would be top scorer in the 1982 WC in Spain, and Milan's GK Enrico Albertosi. In total, seven teams were involved: Lazio, Bologna, Avellino, Milan, Napoli, Perugia and Vicenza. As a consequence, two of these serie A teams were sent to serie B: Lazio and Milan. During the investigations, on March 23, 1980, after the sunday's games, the police went inside 6 stadiums to arrest some players, and club executives... among those arrested, was Milan's president Felice Colombo. Everybody was released after paying heavy bail bonds... but the legal relief didn't stop the sport sanction. Albertosi and Colombo were suspended from football for life. Milan stayed in Serie B only for the 1980-81 season, because it dominated the league with 50 points out of 76 possible (18 wins, 14 draws, 6 losses...consider 2 points only per victory)...Milan also had the top scorer, Antonelli, with 15 goals.... So the following season (1981-82), Milan was back in serie A. But things were not pretty, Milan watched Juventus win their second scudetto in a row under Trapattoni, and finished in 14th place with 24 points only... Along with Como and Bologna, Milan went back to serie B again... >>>>NOTE: During this period, despite being in serie B, Franco Baresi was a top CB, and many serie A teams offered good money to Milan for him, but he declined all offers to stay with Milan... he made the 1982 Italian team that won the WC in Spain. <<<< So in the 1982-83, in serie B, Milan had no problems to win the title, with 54 points... 4 more than the previous time in serie B... 77 goals in 38 games... But back in serie A, in the 1983-84 season, 32 points were just good for the 16th place. Again, Milan had to watch Juventus celebrate another scudetto, with Michele Platini and company... and in the 1984-85 season, it was turn for Verona to win the scudetto, with Milan finishing 7 points behind... so after these mediocre years, and financial problems during the 1985-86 season, a 50 year old investor, from Milano, acquired the team and transformed it into one of the greatest in the world: Silvio Berlusconi

Quote:
In the past, I was really upset when I made what I considered thought provoking threads, and got maybe 3 replies, and 10 views...but I have since changed my outlook, based on several factors: a) The average age of our membership b) What is interesting to me, may not be for other milanistas c) Does it really matter how many replies, views I get? The bottom line for me, is that I have posted some of my thoughts, that the ENTIRE WORLD can access...(more or less)...and if some do, fine, if not..just as well.. But if only one other person than I reads what I have typed, then I am ok with that..if none do, well I have stated my opinion, for the world to see, if they so choose... Be not offended, or discouraged my son, on the views and opinions of others...be yourself, do what you think is right, and you will be satisfied with yourself, one of the most, if not the most important feelings in the world. (You can use this quote if u wish....even if I own the copywright )

gettin' no replies shouldn't mean much... because if i read somethin' & someone else has made a similar message to what i would post... i would avoid postin'... because it is pointless to post another similar message if it has already been posted... likewise i wouldn't post "i feel that way too" type of messages... and don't think for once that the things brought up in this thread are not appreciated... because i do read them even if i don't make comments... and i don't post "thank you" type of messages too... because i as a reader would prefer readin' interestin' posts rather than "i agree with you" or "appreciate it" type of one-liner posts...

hehe, just wanted to spark it up a little bit... see, now more people will read it...
I am traveling this week (all business, little pleasure), but sometime during the weekend I will go into detail with the continuation after the dark years in the 1980's and the arrival of Berlusconi... a new coach in Sacchi... and the Dutchmen (Van Basten and Rijkaard from Ajax, and Gullit from PSV Eindhoven... and with them, a brilliant generation of Italian players to go with Baresi, like Costacurta, Maldini, Tassotti, F. Galli, G. Galli (GK), Virdis, Ancelotti, Donadoni, and others who followed like Eranio, Panucci, Albertini, Lentini (yes, he had a few good moments)... also, extraordinary foreigners like Jean Pierre Papin...

back to 60' .. information about
The period of Nereo Rocco / first CL trophy won by ACM AC Milan returned to win a football league in 1961/1962. Its manager was Nereo Rocco, an innovative football coach, known as inventor of the catenaccio tactic (It is a style of play designed to be Defensively orientated and attack on the counter). The team included a young Gianni Rivera and José Altafini. The following season, thanks also to Altafini's goals, Milan won their first Champions League by defeating Benfica 2-1. This was also the first time an Italian team won the Champions League. Despite that, during the 1960s Milan won less than they deserved, mainly as the Cbecause of the heavy concurrence of Helenio Herrera's Inter. Its next scudetto arrived only in 1967/1968, thanks to the goals of Pierino Prati, the Serie A topscorer in that season, as well up Winners' Cup, won against Hamburger SV thanks to two goals of Kurt Hamrin. The next season AC Milan won its second Champions League (4-1 to AFC Ajax), and in 1969 won its first Intercontinental Cup, after having defeated in two dramatic legs the Estudiantes de La Plata of Argentina (3-0, 1-2) Last edited by lked; 30-11-2006 at 19:02. |
